    I live in the northern part of Italy, were the outbreak first started here, and I've left the house 2 or 3 times in the last month to only buy food due to the forced lockdown and it looks like it will be another three weeks before anything can start to move.
    Thank God I discovered this channel, it's honestly one of the best ones I've ever seen, great explanations and even better shirts. I've also just realized that it also talks about non-space stuff!
    EDIT: Didn’t expect this much support, thank you so much! We survived worse and we will survive this one as well, we underestimated the virus back in early February and we are paying for that mistake, but please LEARN from us instead of ignoring it. If things are done correctly and early enough, heavy measures like ours won’t be needed. Unfortunately on the news I see that more and more countries are ignoring the problem until it’s too late...

    "RUclipsrs are doing a better job explaining this pandemic than the news media." wrote Lamin Touray. I have exactly the same feeling and I live in Barcelona, nowadays a ghost town. The authorities are a joke. We see cabinet ministers disobeying their own quarantine orders and measures, mayors partying in the streets while the majority of us are locked in our houses and actually observing the restrictions.

      You are talking about it as if all this is an easy task for any authority to handle, we are talking about shutting down city populations to the millions and then get everyone to follow. This is not an easy task. And it doesnt make it any easier since in the west there is a culture of not believing in doctors,scientists or governments. So instead of calling them a joke you might wanna help them keep friends, family, or
      colleges informed and actually tell them and advice them not to go out.. So my point is stop acting like our authorities is ''your'' parents that needs to hold your hand and guide ''you'' to simple tasks, try and help them instead and lessen the burden that some people put on them right now for not following simple instructions.

      This is also the difference between cartoon, or maybe also real villains, and professionals.
      A villain will kill you for failing, whether success is possible or not.
      The army, if you fail by following your training and orders, will reward you for trying anyway, though it might be posthumously.
      So there are two right ways. One where you succeed by blind luck or godlike knowledge, or one where you do things by the book.
      Since blind luck is rarely distributed to all, and godlike knowledge is even more rare, professionals empathise the following of orders.

Influenza's 0.2% mortality rate is for all infected. I've heard numbers as high as a 10% mortality rate for people in intensive care due to the flu. Jon Its not a face. Do the math....0.2% to 3.6% is 18 times greater mortality. The influenza mortality has also been reported as 0.1% so that would make this 20-40 times greater depending on the death rate that is being examined. This is not misinformation AT ALL. It has been a concern within the US because our middle aged Americans typically have comorbities such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, obesity, etc. ALL of those increase the mortality rate of middle aged Americans without even discussing our elderly. This is some of the most accurate information that I’ve seen put out by anyone.

She stayed at home and was a 16 yr old nurses assistant “candy striper” fighting the Spanish flu. All the sick people and the deaths. How horrible it was and all her relatives and friends who died. She never became sick and wondered why. Grandfather caught it in France but only mild case. I always wished I had recorded our conversation. And fill bad because I really only really wanted to hear about grandfathers War experience so most of my questions was about him. I really only now know how Brave she truly was. And would love to have heard more about it. Rest In Peace Grandma I might see you soon

      Sadly, his research is lazy on this one. We don’t know the CFR for Spanish Flu (which BTW is NOT the last global pandemic - that would be HIV/AIDS, then Hong Kong Flu, then Asian Flu, and THEN Spanish Flu). We don’t even really know how many people died (the range in estimates from historical sources is laughably wide). We also don’t yet know enough about the denominator to estimate the true CFR for COVID-19. We will never be able to truly compare them in the manner in which he thought he could, because we’ll never be able to make confident statements to that level if detail with Spanish Influenza.
      Oh, and for the love of God, the common cold isn’t a freaking coronavirus. That’s a very small list of things he got wrong. I’m very annoyed by this, because there are worthwhile lessons from Spanish Influenza, but they’re buried by lazy crap like this.

    I'm a math guy (take that as you will). Tonight, I dug up an old assignment from a differential equations course and briefly considered making a video about it. It was a basic population model dealing with the spread of disease. And even though I've been struggling to make any regular content recently, I held off. The reason is that it would be far too easy for the numbers that I post to be misinterpreted.
    What worries me now is that there are plenty of people (many who can't even solve a basic quadratic) who have more of a forum than I ever will. And many are far less discerning about pumping self serving or miss-leading information. I guess I'm preaching to the choir here. Because if you watch this show, then you appreciate hard data.

      As a (poorly) recovering math head married to a retired nurse and the father of another nurse, I can say math is only awkwardly suited to modeling the path of the disease. There are too many poorly understood and documented variables. For example, in China the disease appeared as a very serious condition with a Case Fatality Rate of more than 20%. Recent hot spots in China display CFRs under 1%. A couple of the factors are severity on presentation (early ones got really bad before they sought or found treatment), awareness of contagion, and aging; delayed deaths from organ damage is only noted after time goes by. Finally, we don't even know _all_ the variables. Certainly human behavior, which will almost certainly shift with location, information, and aging, and government actions (and the landscape on which those decisions act) will carry the weight.

    • @JOBoarder27
      @JOBoarder27 4 года назад

      @Mycel They're not closely related at all. The closest relation rhinovirus and coronavirus have are in the Phylum. That's pretty high on the classification, meaning they're very different. I don't know how closely norovirus is related, though i'd have no imagine not very close at all.

    • @puirYorick
      @puirYorick 4 года назад

      @@JOBoarder27 The term "coronavirus" will likely turn out to be like "fish" in that it's more of a colloquial handle than a precise clade identifier. A virus that resembles a corona outwardly is essentially a coronavirus in the vernacular.
      That's how I'm taking it anyway. Many of the earliest germs to be identified were named after their appearance under the microscope when we couldn't possibly know the first thing about precise genomic relatedness.

    • @puirYorick
      @puirYorick 4 года назад

      @Mycel I'm not sure it's useful to expect precise figures on any of this to be honest. It's useful to make relatively honest comparisons because all historical data being compared will likely contain similarly imprecise data points which may have taken on the appearance of being hard facts once committed to the record.
      In the ongoing dynamic situation, we can't really trust the data from most sources to be *precisely* true because there will be differing interpretations and counting rules for what constitutes a case and how thoroughly a population was scraped for the sample data. Then there are the issues of outright lies and covering up of some facts and the lack of reasonable testing programs. Don't test - don't tell is rampant.
      Actual deaths and numbers of hospitalized patients are at least pretty hard to fake outright because there are actual bodies and patient records.
      I worry more about false comparisons between numbers that do not represent the same meaning being tossed around. When one event is at least an order or two of magnitude more deadly than another yet people misrepresent this truth in the reverse because the wrong columns of data are being charted for comparison then I take exception.
      Whether (for example) the true R0 is 6.7 or 7.1 (or 20) is less important now than comprehending that the other virus' R0 was only in the range of 0.1 (or 0.01 by some charts) to 0.2 or even say 2.0 for argument sake. The *precise* values are less critical for now than the "truth" *accuracy* in portraying the relative scale of the danger.

      Not really.
      The technology we now have, and our ability, to help keep people from dying, is orders of magnitude better than it was with the (American) Spanish flu.
      Imagine what the death rate could have been with literally 100 year old technology.
      25 year old medical technology sucks pretty bad compared to today TBH, I'd rather not face a pandemic with what they had a century ago.
      Look at tetanus. While few get it now thanks to vaccines, right before the tetanus vaccine, an average of 580 people got tetanus and an average of 472 died.
      That's a nasty death rate.
      Today, we average 33 cases a year, but only 2 deaths.

      Oh yeah, a lot of modern techniques about handling a pandemic, were figured out during the 1918 flu.

      And thanks to not also packing millions of people inside factories, and millions more inside military bases, like they did because of WW1 going on at the same time, those lessons learned are helping slow the spread of covid-19.
      Which kept our hospitals from running out of beds and equipment, so all those meds and equipment we now have could be used on everyone that needed it.

    Great presentation but there’s a minor error in terminology.
    Technically speaking, the virus is called SARS-COV-2 and not COVID-19.
    Many people mix up the terminology but the actual virus is SARS-COV-2, which stands for “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome COronaVirus 2” and the name of the disease that it causes is called COVID-19, which stands for “COronaVIrus Disease 2019”
    So SARS-COV-2 is the virus that causes the human disease, COVID-19.

      another one is the fibers in masks, why are they just plain dry, why is there nothing to bond the virus and anything else we want to filter out, so they dont just bounce around between them until they get inhaled or exhaled from the mask considering how much smaller the virus we are talking about now, is compared to the gaps, and while we are at it include something that will destroy their cellular walls in that oil or other sticky substance to coat the fibers with, (also liking the salt added to allow it to dissolve in small droplets and such, then when the moisture is evaporated at the high speed it does, you get sharp crystaline shapes that the cells get cut up on, theoretically according to the canadian researchers reporting on that research they are apparently doing. )

    I don't see the sensible reasons why people always comment on "How bad could Covid 19 be compared to Spanish flu?" "We are making big fuss about it". The scariest part of it is that most people have shown mild to no symptoms and didn't realise that they are carrier until it was too late to be saved. And once again, please appreciate on the strict measures putting into place compared to the days of spanish flu, when the human kind have limited knowledge and harsher conditions to deal with it.

      -The common cold is not a coronavirus.
      -Spanish flu is NOT the last global pandemic. Asian Flu and Hong Kong Flu would like a word. As would HIV/AIDS.
      -We have nowhere near enough data to estimate the denominator in COVID-19’s case fatality rate.

      Confused, I looked back and realised I wrote flu by mistake. My bad, hitting 3am here.
      My point was that it's hard to consider this COVID-19 as much of a threat when in 1 year it killed barely 2.5m and without vaccine, worldwide it is likely to not ever reach even double that, ever.
      It has killed barely 0.03% of the world population and likely would never reach 0.05%, without outside intervention.
      For comparison, heart disease kills almost 8 times this number, yearly, and is climbing rapidly.
      Cancer yearly takes around 10 million and this is also on the increase.
      As for how many died of the flu, hard to say. The figures are jacked all around.
      Based on your attitude, I have the opinoion that it's unfortunate that you weren't among them.

  • @DonLee1980
    @DonLee1980 4 года назад +8

    When (and I hope not) infection rates go through the roof, it could easily kill more people than the Spanish Flu. Once hospitals are overwhelmed and just giving up on the old so that someone younger could take the hospital bed the death rates could climb from 1% all the way to 5%. This of course thanks to modern medicine, hygiene, knowledge etc, makes it probably much less than the Spanish Flu death rate. But in terms of lethalness, I seriously think it's right up there. If we don't really really take this serious, this could be absolutely horrible.

    • @DonLee1980

    The answer is that it doesn't compare at all other than, the world's response was identical. The Spanish flu killed at least 50 million people and had some very painful symptoms.
    Most victims’ bodies turned blue-black as they died. Healthcare workers reported appalling scenes, with delirious patients suffering horrific nosebleeds. “Sometimes the blood would just shoot across the room,” a navy nurse recalled. If their lungs punctured, the patients’ bodies would fill with air. “You would feel somebody and he would be bubbles… When their lungs collapsed, air was trapped beneath their skin. As we rolled the dead in winding sheets, their bodies crackled - an awful crackling noise which sounded like Rice Krispies when you pour milk over them.”

    One more thing to note: only the severe cases of covid19 are getting tested now. One with minor symptoms won't get a test.
    Which means, the mortality rates from this pandemic is grossly exaggerated.
    One of the few nations that tested everyone heavily was South Korea, and there it's less than 1% mortality.. seems like a more reliable piece of data than all the hype in the media.
