Yeah, they added more scenes with body expressions compared to the 2011 one where it’s just a dull face when he pulling off a wig.
@@sodalite5294 This is why some liberties need to be taken with manga. Faithfulness to the source isn't always a great thing. 99's anime talent added so much to what is basically a blank canvas. (the manga art is pretty bare bones, even when he was trying)

The 99 version is so much better. Dramatic atmospheric lighting and dynamic close up shots ad to the intensity of the scene vs the dull static shots of the 2011 version. There's really no contest
2011 version intentionally put less effort into what the 99 version already covered. Any shared scene is going to be better in 99.

The two versions actually have massive differences when you think about it.
-In the 2011 version, Kurapika is just using a wig, and whether anyone thinks he is a woman is irrelevant. He doesn’t care, that’s on them. He’s just getting a job done. Its more logical.
-in the 1999 version. It is more passionate and out of control, almost insane.
Imagine Kurapika putting on the lipstick. Its something he believes he HAS to do.
He wanted The Troupe to think he was a woman. There are heavy queer undertones.

It is. If you haven't watched it, I really recommend to give it a try, but stop at Greed Island arc because they didn't do a good job with that arc. The prior arcs however are even better than the 2011 one.
@@astorlefflinker8417 I didn't like the first arc adaptation, not only it heavily toned down the shock violence too much (2011 also did but less and in a better way) But also 99 added a lot of filler episodes that felt like going forever.
But from the tower arc up to the end of York Shin 99 is way better. Specially Gon vs Hisoka fight.

Kurapika's character design has more elegance to it in 99. Especially in later arc. Earlier in the show he's just some unassuming badass.

Both characters with and without disguise are still so hot.
In the 99 version, Kurapika is calmer and doesn't get carried away by emotions, the 2011 version basically went crazy for nothing.
Not to mention that the one from 99 was smarter when he said that appearances don't say anything about someone, nor their gender, the one from 2011 just wanted to beat him to death in the car.
(the english voice of the 2011 dub sounds very masculine compared to the Japanese)

isnt the 2011 version supposed to be more faithful to the manga? regardless of what you like/dislike about either version, 2011 is the one you should consider cannon in all its aspects, as 1999 added a bunch of fluff and filler

This scene showcases why I prefer the 99 version. There was a visceral attention to detail that added to the power of most scenes. Slowed the pace, but worth it
