- The Etsumi-Hoku Line (越美北線, Etsumi-hoku-sen) is a railway line operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The line extends 52.5 km (32.6 mi) from Echizen-Hanandō Station in Fukui to Kuzuryūko Station in Ōno with a total of 22 stations. It is also referred to as the Kuzuryū Line (九頭竜線, Kuzuryū-sen).
The line was originally planned to connect to what is now the Nagaragawa Railway, but the last 24.0 km (14.9 mi) section that would have involved extensive tunneling was never commenced. A bus service provided a connection between the two lines until it ceased in 2002.

The effort involved with digging so many long tunnels and erecting bridges on a regional line is astonishing.
I love these smaller lines. They show that not everything in Japan is manicured and polished, though neat and clean. This adds a relaxing atmosphere to the trip. Greetings from Australia.
The lack of rubbish and graffiti along the line is apparent.
There is a car journey from Tokyo around Mt Fujiama and the lakes. When you get near to the mountain you get onto country roads more like your roads at home. Including potholes.

@@geoffreymartin2764 Love to slowly explore the back roads. So much local flavour to enjoy.

Thank you for this beautiful ride! I enjoyed it very much! I want to pay my respect to the people who build those bridges! They did a great job!! Greetings from Apeldoorn (The Netherlands).
I didn't realize until I was about an hour into this video...there's no graffiti anywhere! All the walls, buildings, bridge abutments...clean! As an American, this delights and astonishes me!
Same here! It's absolutely a gorgeous thing and a nice change of pace!
I love exploring Japan with you. Greetings from Poland.
There's something so soothing about train rides.

What a beautiful landscape and a peaceful journey! Thanks for sharing it.
I want to thank you very much for the very scenic ride! This is my only form of travel now and seeing all the beautiful countries. Everyone have a blessed safe month of October 2023.
Fantastic way of seeing the world! Really great. I enjoyed every second of this immensely! Thanks so much!
What an utterly charming, little line.
But it must have cost a LOT to construct - considering how small it is.
Especially the early part.
Thank you for recording/posting this.

It was projects like these that basically bankrupted JNR (predecessor to the current Japan Rail companies) and forced them to be privatized. I really did wish that they had finished the route to Hokunō Station as that would have made it more profitable.
Love the mirror on the platform, you can see what the train looks like, and of course, the driver can watch passengers exit and board the train. Wonderful, thanks for the ride.
Thank you for this beautiful ride... from CANADA
Now if only us Canadians could finally join the world to the 21st century with our transportation systems! Our trains and tracks are still quite antique!
Sooo relaxing, I fell asleep. Even my trains in the city nearly lulled me to sleep. It’s nice to see greenery in the country though.
WAT AN AMAZING🚉 RIDE. THOROUGHLY ENJOYED🥰.
A very enjoyable journey through some magnificent countryside. Thankyou for the upoad.
nippon beautiful country. I like this. 🇧🇩🇧🇩🎌🎌🎌🎌

Piękna linia.
A real country interurban line! The US,had in New England and the MidWest,a whole series of lines, that interconnected, and you could at one time, literally ride from New York to Boston,on all the trolley lines! It took a while, but you saw the real countryside, not from 5000 feet! All gone, due to the greed of the Bankers, oil companies, and GM! Karma is coming back to haunt, and maybe[soon],the US,will get like Switzerland, and Japan, where everything is connected, and no one is left hanging! Thanks for an outstanding video, and scenery was spectacular 👌!! The engineering of that right of way,was awesome 👌! Thanks again!⛩️⛩️⛩️⛩️⛩️🚂🚂🚂

Is Etsumi-Hoku Line connected to Etsumi-Nan Line?
If so how long is the distance of those lines together?
What is length of largest tunnel on this line?
Anyone knows this train's manufacturer ? Also it seems to me that is mechanicly driven, thru a manual gearbox. Is this correct? Thanks
Wow !! how long is the first tunnel?
I think about 400m ! 🤔
Mi je zelo všeč. Bolj kot Šinkansen.
Majhni kraji, majhne vasi, majhne postaje, veliko zelenja.
Must be very few trains each day. Very few passing tracks on this one track line, and by the middle of the video didn't see any other trains going the other way in a passing siding.

Was this some kind of special trip with all the people taking photographs? Also, the automated announcements on Japanese trains always seem to go on for about five minutes. Whatever do they find to say?
A printed transcription of the announcements into the video description would be enlightening. We could use Google translate into the language of our choice. 🤔
I am wondering if the photographers are the Japanese equivalent of train spotters.
It's mostly done for people with sight disabilities. A brief summary of what is usually announced (might have missed some since it's hard to hear): Thank you for using this train, destination of this train, the doors are opening/closing, turn your mobile phone to silent mode and refrain from talking on the phone, pick up a ticket when you board, pay the fare by the driver/let the driver know if you are getting off since he/she is the only person operating the train, this train has priority seats so give up your seat if you sit on it for someone that may need it, if you see any dangerous or suspicious objects then let the driver know, press the emergency button if there is an emergency, the train will depart soon. Also, everything is said in formal Japanese so it sounds longer than it really is.
@@joeswanderings The photographers are indeed train spotters. In Japanese, they're called "tetsudo otaku" or "railway enthusiasts". Rural trains have wrappings that are unique to the line and so are popular with train spotters.
@@khamronsingame Ah, like the much-loved "see it, say it, sorted!" in the UK
@@AndreiTupolev Honestly I wish Australian trains had an automated announcement system similar to Japan. Our trains, at least in Melbourne, are announced by the driver with a thick accent through horrible speakers so half the time you don't even know what they're saying.
Japan - i love you.🥹
All these tunnels were giving me anxiety 😅
Goooood

1:12. Are those rice paddies?
Maybe It's a meadow
I thought they were; rice needs so much water to grow and those fields, and many more as we rode along, were FULL of water.
Why does the engineer blow the train horn and they don't blow it at the road crossings?
a girls voice keeps saying something like tete batsu tete, what is she actually saying and what does it mean?
I'm taking a wild (likely wrong) guess here - I heard that "tete (or diddit) batsu" at times when the train stopped, while other times, it was instead "tete (or diddit) eek."
I thought maybe the recording was telling passengers to debark on platform left or right...? Maybe?
