I appreciate jamie bringing the common people's food from india onto this food channel. There isn't a point in complaining about the authenticity of it because this meal he created was beautiful.I'm in love.
+you etch Thank you for your kind comment
For anyone wondering, this is a really lovely dish. I've just made it today and am currently eating it with some rice. The amount that is made from the given quantities of ingredients means that you get 4 generous portions worth of food, so for me this will be good for my main meal today and the rest will be frozen and eaten for a healthy lunch at work, however I can imagine that this would easily feed a family. I also want to mention that whilst this meal takes a long time to cook, it really isn't all that labor intensive and is
well worth the invested time, thanks for the recipe!
+Scott Guest You're a lovely, lovely man, Scott! Thanks so much for the great feedback!
Just made the whole dish tonight for dinner and for guests. I am really proud , it looks just like Jamie's!!
Thanks for this fabulous recipe Jamie! I tried it today and my family loved it! I tweaked it a bit by adding butter chicken paste instead of the rogan josh, which I didn't have and also added a bit of coconut milk and it turned out great! Please keep more of your exciting veg recipes coming our way! 😃
So much flavors in one dish , all done from scratch with a quick and easy touch, you're like a magician in the kitchen, seriously!
+heghineh Tah daaaah!
Love it so healthy 😍 thanks oliver
This is arguably the best daal recipe I have ever tasted. I mean literally couldn't put tasting spoon down. I was eating it straight from the pot. You eat it without the chapatti and rice. But its delicious either way. I have made this 2 weeks in a roll. Trust me I have tried quite a few daal recipes (including Vegan versions) but this will always be my fave.
I think I might have to try this one pretty soon. I love that as a recipe, its been made easy to follow and put together. One thing I would love to see from the food tube channel would be a healthier take on Dahl Makhani. It's by far my favorite lentil based dish, but the amount of fat required to get the desired result means its something you should only really have on occasion. Its also hard to come by where I live, the closest I have found is a microwavable version in a pouch and its just not the same.
Thumbs up for more vegan recipes!! 👏🏻
Thankfully there are so many Indian recipes that are vegan!
Hesitant Poison
And thankfully some Indians like me hate vegetarian hindu food.
Hesitant Poison
I would love to try some vegan Indian dishes!
Laurence Devlin
Don't you just hate it when people ignore you? It's annoying right?
+Laurence Devlin A lot of Indian recipes are vegan. If you are vegetarian, the choice is endless. There are good channels on RUclips. Search and you shall find.
Thank you for this! I have a date today and she's vegan while I am not. I decided to cook for her (supersmart decision, I know), and wasn't sure what to make. This is perfect! I think you just saved my life! :)
+incompetentLP You charmer, you! Nice touch for date night.
Looks great!
wow! This is so amazing..you completely changed boring daal into very tasty looking dish.
Looks amazing, thank you for incouraging people to eat more veggies and a little less meat. Yum :)

+Luveena Lee Wohoo! Let us know how it turns out!
Yes please!
Made this tonight, though just the dhal by itself. The temper curry leaves added such a nice touch, first time ever cooking with them. Definitely going to have fun playing around with this recipe in the future.
+cohex6 Amazing! We'd love to hear all about your experimenting!
+Jamie Oliver Just remade it but instead of eggplant I roasted potato and carrots instead! Turned out just as good! This method of making a dhal is awesome and is turning out way better than my previous attempts. Thanks so much!
Thank you now im hungry again xD
like everytime i see your videos :D
+Ace Wayne Wohoo! Mission accomplished

+cupcake jasmine AMAZING! Thrilled to hear that you enjoy this BEAUTY. x
I didn't have Any mustard seeds so I used aniseed and it worked pretty Delicious 😋
Question about nutritional value: after all that boiling and oven time, is there any vitamins left from the Aubergine?
Dear Jamie and team,
So many great videos. So much inspiration. Thank you!
But if there's one thing, it's that the fast edits and background music of recent videos make it difficult to focus on what is actually going on. There was such a beauty to the simplicity of the Jamie does... and Jamie at Home series. No background music or fast cuts necessary. This content is really good. Trust in it, and leave out the flash!
Don't often have a meal with no meat, but this is tasty easy to make and quite cheap, amazing video Jamie and thanks for the help :)
+CappieTiN It's a real mid-week meal GAME CHANGER.
this was amazingly delicious. and easy! Made it twice in 1 week. lol
this is super cute.. it's not authentic Indian but still lovely! thank you Jamie :)

For tempering I use clarified butter, smells and taste awsome :)

-A,x
+Mandeville Sisters :D
Do the tempering with ghee it tastes really good
Awesome!! I am always looking for delicious vegetarian meals for our meatless days! Thanks Jamie!
Most Indian recipes are vegetarian and can easily be made vegan by omitting ghee or substituting milk with coconut milk! :-)
+Cooking with Julia We LOVE meat free Mondays!
Mmmm looks DELICIOUS!!!
Thanks for a delicious veggie recipe :D
+thebirdisblue You're so very welcome!
yummy
muito phoda!
Traditionally tempering is mixed with the dal to boost the flavor but I love the idea of how it is added like a garnish to each serving. Split chickpeas dal tastes much better personally and has a stronger texture compared to the popularly used Toor dal( Do not know the English nomenclature). It`s so appetizing to watch regular Indian food made in such a twisted way ! Baking the aubergine and adding to the Dal was some gold standard innovation. BTW I am a non vegetarian but this dish got me commenting on RUclips for the first time :) Jamie knows his spices well. I think he was trying a quick fix recipe, hence the curry paste. But fresh powder/paste always best !
This recipe makes me cry. If you’re going to promote or cook anything related to the Indian subcontinent, make it properly with authenticity. Dont white wash it, kmt.
Could not agree more.
That’s not „white washing“ it’s being creative with Recipes . You should be proud, that People like the Indian Kitchen an include it to their Meals in their Way. Nothing bad doing this.
And here I am like: "MOM! Get in the car. We're going shopping for Aubergine Daal ingredients!"
+Mudzi Mansour YAYAYAY! Go, Mum, Go!
It looks sooo delicious!!!! I don't know what that mixture was that you put with the aubergine and the onions. Can anyone help me? Thanks
Looks delicious :)
yayy! you made Indian food 😀 please make some more
+Aliza Naqvi We'll see what we can do!
yum!
Tempa? I thought it was tarka.
+Fahad Baig Tadka/Tarka is the Hindi word for it. In English it's called tempering (temper) the oil. Also they are not exactly the same process.
In gujarati, my mum calls it "vaghaar"
In telugu we call it Thalimpu.
it is called tempering a curry. subtitles are dumb, it is temper not tempeh lol.
Hell yeah! No animal death at all makes me very happy.
I'll be making this very soon.
Looks delish Xx I dont know if every indian house hold does this but once you roast the chapatis on the pan, my mom puts the chapati over medium flame so that it puffs up like a foot ball and then she serves up. :) Im totally gonna try that aubergine though :)
+Tania Smith We'd love to know what you think once you've tried it!
dude you are so awesome
This recipe is gorgeous ! But what can I replace split peas with ? :)))
This looks fantastic and easy, plus best part it's vegan!
+red77tube Wohoo!
Thanks so much for all the vegan recipes!
+lailaylen :D
I wish to invite Jamie for some authentic aubergine masala and daltadka aka tempered dal and some soft chapatis in the side
it makes me happy when you make Indian dishes :)
+Sailee B Glad we could make you smile!
It looks delicius!!! I❤Curry
But i have a question, it is posible to use ordinary curry if i dont have curry paste? i love your channel!! 😄helloo!! from Mallorca!
+JuNkY LaCoUr Do you mean, as in a pre-made curry? You need a paste as the dhal will dilute it.
omg YUM!!
Great recipe! Question: do you need to salt the aubergine (and rinse off) before cooking to get rid of the bitterness? I usually do this, just wondering if you think it's necessary here?
+Tami Rhodes Completely up to you, Tami! Go with whatever you prefer.
I think it's possible to adjust how some of the ingredients are prepared and this actually could be a great camp dish. Thanks for the idea.
+Alan Shore Absolutely! Let us know how you get on with it.
mouth watering mmmmmmmmmm
onr Question jamie--- i brought the set of pans you where using in the clip .....you used a metal spoon ???? are they that strong or are you just a bad boy lol
thanks for the inspitation
Lovely food chef, excellent recipe. For vegan person.
+rona rona home cooking channel Lovely comment!
OMG I'm hungry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More vegan recipes!!! :))
+Charles V Keep your eyes peeled for more vegan goodness coming your way!
umm😋
superbbbbbbbbbbbb🤗
Yuuummm!
jamie 💖💖💖💖👌
I liked that you cooked the eggplant in the oven. Never tried that and will try it. But what I did not like was you added curry paste. You should make your own paste. it gives a much fresher and better flavor. Also you cooked daal with split peas. It is usually cooked with toor daal. Never tried that and will try it. But what I did not like was you sprinkled the tempa/tempering/tadka on top of it like it was cilantro. You are supposed to mix the whole tempering with the daal. It adds a whole new flavor to it.
+A girl In World Thanks for the tips! Always great to broaden our knowledge.
Impossible to find Rogan Josh paste where I am. Is there any alternative which would work well ?
Tomorrow night's dinner - sorted. Thanks!
+Nick Leonard WOOHOO!
Big up joliver, another for the VGANG.
I would imagine using that temper/tampa(?) when cooking the rice would make for a nice yellow-ish flavoured rice :D
I'm soooo hungry! :p
What would a good alternative for this currypaste be? Can’t buy it over here :)
omggg 😍😍😍😍
you just killed me here and now... I love aubergines and Basmati rice is my absolute favourite!!!! I'm gonna try it this week
For good Indian recipes I recommend to watch Indian cooking channels than Jamie's or Gordon's
Hey Jamie or anyone else.. How much oil do you use for the chapati? Mine are always too dry and not floppy/foldable 😗 help!
the spices + oil thing is called Talimpu in telugu, which we add in all our daals after they're prepared for that beautiful flavour.
Holy yum batman!
+Ti Co Where's Robin when you need him?
those hyacinths over there 😍
