I'll tell you my friend I served my apprenticeship as a tool and die maker some 30 yrs ago and if you give me a drafting table a t square and some templates I can draw just about anything but these CAD programs are tough to learn at least for me like I said thanks for getting me moving in the right direction I was really stuck
thank you so much this design has been killing me I agree magnets on there own can't run on there own but I'm looking to combine it with a small volatge pulse motor it's an interest of mine and I think a fun exercise thank you so much for the help with the design
Very nice. Thank you. I'm more a Fusion 360 guy and have to learn how to do things with Mechanical. So you taught me how to do circular patterns and how to select midplanes. Pretty cool feature that selecting a plane within a body automatically shows you a cut-through. One question though from someone who is more used to parametrical design: is there a way in your example to shorten the cylindrical cuts when you realize they are too long? Or do you have to ctrl-Z everything and restart from scratch? After all that's where parametric design shines and I wonder if I can do similar things here in Mechanical. (I have to admin though that I have hit the borders of parametrical design so often that I had to redo many things due to wrong order of dependencies or lost objects.)
No; just select one end of the slot and either drag it to where you want it, type in a value of how far you want to move it or move it Upto ( a DSM tool ) to exactly match the positon of some other feature.
Hey jim i have a small request....Are you able to make a tutorial on importing and converting SLDPRT/ SLDASM/ STEP/ IGS file formats for use in Design Spark Mechanical? it seems as though Design Spark Mechanical RSDOC file format isn't used anywhere else and i want to be able to download and use files from grabcad.
Hi Jim, did you ever manage to resolve the backup file issue, I am about to start a new project for a 16mm/ft live steam loco I am now reasonably comfortable using DSM but I do not want to find out like you did further down the line that my hard work is vulnerable, I appreciate your thoughts.
The backup system in DSM is wrongly named; it should more accurately be named as a crash recovery system. Evey new file that you create in a session is placed in the backup file folder (setup in Options/Support files). If the program crashes, these files remain in the 'backup' folder and can be recovered. However, if you quit the program in the normal way these files are erased. To properly backup your project you should manually, at reasonable time intervals, copy your project onto another disc or memory stick - which is what I am doing now for important projects.
I'm afraid not. The only Mirror tool is in the 2D sketch mode. There is no 3D mirror tool. Please see my video: ruclips.net/video/FMxsD-68muM/видео.html The mirror tool pt1 - 3
...i liked the demo but the sound of key clicking and mouse pointer (with whatever tool selected) movement, was as if you are moving your hands all about whilst explaining what you are doing, becomes a bit confusing after a while; especially while trying to follow along trying to recreate what you are doing on screen... i'm finding the learning curve for dsm is a bit challenging and frustrating... ...anyway, thanks for taking the time to create the video... i'll keep at it and try to memorize the shortcut keys to move around the screen during the design creation... cheers... :-)
The clicks are simply the keyboard keys being pressed and their sound being picked up by the mic. If these sounds were absent you might not realise what is happening.
Jim Taylor ...thanks for reply, jim... yes, i understand about your mic picking up the key clicks; didn’t mean it as a criticism, just that it’s distracting... 🤓

thanks a lot, 7 thumbs up to you for your tutorials!

great demo again ! thanks
Excellent. Thank you.

@@JimTaylor42 Thank you for the prompt reply, that all makes sense and I do already have a data backup protocol in place so I am good to go.
With your obvious knowledge, hopefully, you can help. I have s'rched everywhere .... CANNOT find MIRROR. Does it Exist? Thanks!

And here's me thinking that the key clicks are helpful - it's a funny old world, isn't it?
@@JimTaylor42 ...aye that it 'tis...
