My background is a bit different as I have stayed here in Singapore most of my life and I don’t have to serve national service. I salute you Asao-Kun for serving the nation and it must be a hard decision to renounce your Singapore Nationality. Same half jipun-nan & half Singaporean here! This is an interesting clip that reminded me of my post-NS days and going through a similar 究極の二択 as a part of my life. I'm a totally opposite case of Asao-san as my mind was already fixed to take up Singapore citizenship after completing my NS as I felt the culture and overall vibes in Singapore suits my character better. @Kenichi Nakashima If you are referring to your race and nationality you do not identify as half each. You hyphen or group them together. "Japanese Singaporean" would be a proper term in English. Just like Black people in the US don't say that they are "Half Black Half American" or Chinese in Malaysia don't say "Half Chinese Half Malaysian".

I think the main point is that he already chose to renounce his SG citizenship yet he went into NS with a positive mindset and attitude, thinking that it will be a good experience, rather than thinking it’s a waste of time. NS may be an obligation but it’s up to you what you make out of the situation, and learn to enjoy it & make the best out of it. Always hear people complain about the younger generation being strawberry generation so it’s great to see them with this attitude. His parents must be proud!
this is cause got family support. imagine someone who has to work to pay rent on an apartment. two years in army with shit pay means like spending two years in jail, you exit with literally no belongings. eg: imagine some guy whose family met with disaster and no insurance payout . so he's now an orphan with minimal or no assets. the ability to serve ns without distraction is literally privilege. there are many local guys who awol cos they need to feed their family.
I think it’s for the video. He don’t have a choice. It’s mandatory to serve NS. His parents had registered him as Singaporean before/after he was born. If he didn’t serve, he will be considered as a defaulter. Since he still have family in Singapore from one of his parents, I don’t think they wish for him to not being able to enter Singapore forever.
@@fez877 Yea think Singapore's government has previously resisted against people renouncing their citizenship before conscription age as they claim its a ruse to evade it, probably as our birth rate drops & we would thus have even fewer citizens for the country's defence. Each of them might have to defend more people too than before as with immigration, the proportion of citizens in the population is dropping while the overall population is increasing (@ least before the pandemic)

he came here for the experience. it's like signing up for a 2 year outdoor adventure. he's the odd one that wanted to try it. we singaporeans don't have the choice.
Having a positive attitude will be something that will carry you through anything and even NS without much problem and even doing it well. He's even a 3rd SGT in NS which means he has to go to the extra mile of training too.

Amazing, only 80 years ago around this very time was the fall of Singapore and now within a lifetime we have Japanese coming to Singapore for military training.. hopefully this is a sign this part of the world is progressing towards peaceful times indeed
In all fairness it was ONE power crazy Japanese emperor who started a shit storm. If not for Hirohito so many lives would not have been lost on all sides. Its not like Japan as a nation decided to go ape shit & invade everyone.

And America is every ready to get involved in a military quagmire far away that does not concern her...not to mention those idiots in Pyongyang. I had a half-Japanese platoon mate who made similar decisions as Asao-san as well. If I recalled he actually grew up in Sg till the age of 7 then moved to Japan. He also came to Sg at 18 to serve and when I heard his story I was incredibly impressed by his courage to come to another country to serve. He also renounced his SG citizenship but said one of the reasons he wanted to serve was cos not serving meant he could not enter Sg in the future which is not ideal for him since he has relatives from his mother’s side, who is a Singaporean. One memorable incident I remembered about him was when we were all playing street soccer or basketball in camp, he was the only practising baseball moves or stance. I know now that baseball is more popular in Japan but a rarity here in sg so it was interesting to see someone so into it, since he also plays in high school I think. I’m not going to pretend like we were super close but we were platoon mates so we weren’t strangers. But my current self would’ve slapped my NS self so hard for not trying to learn about him and Japan more cos during NS was before I got into anime and eventually just got interested in Japan in general. I probably would bother and pester him so much if my present self were to go back to NS. But since he renounced his citizenship he doesn’t have to go to reservist. So I’ll probably never see him again. I mean I could probably get his contact from his section mates who are probably a lot closer to him but it’d probably be awkward if I randomly wanted to talk to him again. Oh another amusing thing he told me was one of the first things he did when he came here before enlisting was just going from one end of the MRT line to the other just cause lol

Both countries do not allow dual citizenship and its sad that he has to choose one over the other. Hopefully the government will give some sort of recognition to those who chose to serve.
As what someone else mentioned, he was born as Singaporean so NS is a must. If he leaves without serving, Singapore considers him a defaulter even if he has taken up another nationality. And defaulters face a jail term. So whether he chose to do NS for reasons stated or whether he “had no choice” as he didn’t want to be considered a fugitive in Singapore’s books we will not know. Nevertheless it is 2 years of his life which is not a short period.
@@P53eud0nym05 I believe his family did have a choice to get a deferment for him before the age of 12 so that he can renounce his citizenship at 21 without going to NS.

Depends on your definition of lucky. There are ladies who volunteer to serve in the SAFVC & many ladies join the military as a career. And unlike old days where some may have signed on due to “no choice”, many ladies today are well educated & can easily find higher paying jobs in private sector or civil service. Yet they choose to sign on in the military, police, SCDF, etc.

Are you aware of the difference between conscription and enlistment? Do you know the meaning of freedom to choose? the issue is not the army. the issue is the freedom to choose whether you want to or not. boys are unlucky because they cant choose. girls are lucky because they can.

Was a bit concerned if Japan might not be so happy with him having worked in a foreign military possibly due to loyalty/patriotic implications (e.g. heard that Indonesia will cancel citizenship for Indonesians who've served in a foreign military, including those who hold Singaporean PR & might thus be called up for NS)

I agree. Regardless his citizenship, he's a brother in arms. Some people have dual citizenship to make use of economic benefits different places offer but for him having done NS, there's no reason why our government has to make him choose between his home country and country he spent 2 years defending when citizenship and PR seems easily given to FTs who seemingly make no effort to assimilate.
Can't. Most people have dual to benefit and received GST refund which isn't fair for the less fortunate and poor in Singapore. Such $ should be given to elderly or pioneer who helped build Singapore and can't work anymore due to age and having to keep up with Singapore cost of living. That's why the age of retirement have extended. Due to the past only needed one breadwinner to get by now even two breadwinner in the Household is even hard to maintain the living expenses of a family what more an elderly who help build the nation. No to dual citizenship.
I had a German, a Canadian, a Brit, an Australian and a Canadian when I was in NS. So far, I only know my Canadian mate renounced his citizenship. The rest are still in and out of Singapore using the SG passport.

My cousin had two sons who live in Japan and they are half Singaporean too. No doubt, they are so happy that they are able to join National Service which their japanese friends never had a chance to experience. They never regret with their decision. NS have make them a tougher and mature as a person.

I admire his boldness and courage to come singapore to do the NS though he can reject it but like wat asao san said the experience provides him previous lessons & making many friends cross borders etc...which will be good memories for him when going back to Japan (at least a small part of singapore is planted in his heart) ...
Think a bigger & more justifiable concern is whether employers might favour hiring locals less compared to foreigners as with the ICTs that locals have to go as NSmen after NS, they might be seen as being less flexibly deployed than foreigners
I am one who dun think NS is a waste of time. I am one who think NS is a DAMN waste of time. If I were in his shoes, if given a choice, I would have used those 2 very precious prime years to do something more productive for myself. But to each his own, he chose to do it despite not needing to, despite not even going to live long term in Singapore. And not having any regrets after having do it. His positivity is really amazing. For that he has my respect and admiration.
His buddies during BMT, Specialist school and of cause his men as a section commander will definitely miss him. Pity that he will be renouncing his citizenship as he won't be going through 10 years of reservists together with his men and platoon mates. NS is not just serving full time for 2yrs but also after we ORDed coming back together yearly for our ICT to train together as platoon mates, sections mates and catching up with what we do as civilians and also MR together after the 10 cycle of reservists. Anyway all the best for his future endeavour...😁
Cant blame him, he never considered Singapore as his true homeland and he only did it out of sheer legal obligation, he spent most of his life in Japan. And being Japan is so steeped in culture and how proud the Japanese of theirs, it is certainly an easy decision for him to make. But the fact he still did it anyway deserves respect and in more ways than one, he certainly learned of valuable lessons he would never learn in his entire life as a civilian in Japan. And I'm sure a part of him will always be proud that he was once a trained soldier, even if it was in the service of a now foreign nation.

Having a positive attitude will be something that will carry you through anything and even NS without much problem and even doing it well. He's even a 3rd SGT in NS which means he has to go to the extra mile of training too.

Amazing, only 80 years ago around this very time was the fall of Singapore and now within a lifetime we have Japanese coming to Singapore for military training.. hopefully this is a sign this part of the world is progressing towards peaceful times indeed

I had a half-Japanese platoon mate who made similar decisions as Asao-san as well. If I recalled he actually grew up in Sg till the age of 7 then moved to Japan. He also came to Sg at 18 to serve and when I heard his story I was incredibly impressed by his courage to come to another country to serve. He also renounced his SG citizenship but said one of the reasons he wanted to serve was cos not serving meant he could not enter Sg in the future which is not ideal for him since he has relatives from his mother’s side, who is a Singaporean. One memorable incident I remembered about him was when we were all playing street soccer or basketball in camp, he was the only practising baseball moves or stance. I know now that baseball is more popular in Japan but a rarity here in sg so it was interesting to see someone so into it, since he also plays in high school I think.
I’m not going to pretend like we were super close but we were platoon mates so we weren’t strangers. But my current self would’ve slapped my NS self so hard for not trying to learn about him and Japan more cos during NS was before I got into anime and eventually just got interested in Japan in general. I probably would bother and pester him so much if my present self were to go back to NS. But since he renounced his citizenship he doesn’t have to go to reservist. So I’ll probably never see him again. I mean I could probably get his contact from his section mates who are probably a lot closer to him but it’d probably be awkward if I randomly wanted to talk to him again.
Oh another amusing thing he told me was one of the first things he did when he came here before enlisting was just going from one end of the MRT line to the other just cause lol
If you want to talk to him then why not. If you go to Japan for holidays, maybe you could reconnect with him as friends?

Great video. He will always be welcome in Singapore. Not many foreign-passport holders can boast of having done national service in Singapore. All the best, Asao-san!
Both countries do not allow dual citizenship and its sad that he has to choose one over the other. Hopefully the government will give some sort of recognition to those who chose to serve.
As what someone else mentioned, he was born as Singaporean so NS is a must. If he leaves without serving, Singapore considers him a defaulter even if he has taken up another nationality. And defaulters face a jail term.
So whether he chose to do NS for reasons stated or whether he “had no choice” as he didn’t want to be considered a fugitive in Singapore’s books we will not know.
Nevertheless it is 2 years of his life which is not a short period.
@@P53eud0nym05 I believe his family did have a choice to get a deferment for him before the age of 12 so that he can renounce his citizenship at 21 without going to NS.

Depends on your definition of lucky. There are ladies who volunteer to serve in the SAFVC & many ladies join the military as a career.
And unlike old days where some may have signed on due to “no choice”, many ladies today are well educated & can easily find higher paying jobs in private sector or civil service. Yet they choose to sign on in the military, police, SCDF, etc.

Was a bit concerned if Japan might not be so happy with him having worked in a foreign military possibly due to loyalty/patriotic implications (e.g. heard that Indonesia will cancel citizenship for Indonesians who've served in a foreign military, including those who hold Singaporean PR & might thus be called up for NS)

I agree. Regardless his citizenship, he's a brother in arms. Some people have dual citizenship to make use of economic benefits different places offer but for him having done NS, there's no reason why our government has to make him choose between his home country and country he spent 2 years defending when citizenship and PR seems easily given to FTs who seemingly make no effort to assimilate.
Can't. Most people have dual to benefit and received GST refund which isn't fair for the less fortunate and poor in Singapore. Such $ should be given to elderly or pioneer who helped build Singapore and can't work anymore due to age and having to keep up with Singapore cost of living. That's why the age of retirement have extended. Due to the past only needed one breadwinner to get by now even two breadwinner in the Household is even hard to maintain the living expenses of a family what more an elderly who help build the nation.
No to dual citizenship.
I had a German, a Canadian, a Brit, an Australian and a Canadian when I was in NS. So far, I only know my Canadian mate renounced his citizenship. The rest are still in and out of Singapore using the SG passport.

My cousin had two sons who live in Japan and they are half Singaporean too. No doubt, they are so happy that they are able to join National Service which their japanese friends never had a chance to experience. They never regret with their decision. NS have make them a tougher and mature as a person.

Think a bigger & more justifiable concern is whether employers might favour hiring locals less compared to foreigners as with the ICTs that locals have to go as NSmen after NS, they might be seen as being less flexibly deployed than foreigners

I am one who dun think NS is a waste of time. I am one who think NS is a DAMN waste of time.
If I were in his shoes, if given a choice, I would have used those 2 very precious prime years to do something more productive for myself.
But to each his own, he chose to do it despite not needing to, despite not even going to live long term in Singapore. And not having any regrets after having do it. His positivity is really amazing.
For that he has my respect and admiration.
His buddies during BMT, Specialist school and of cause his men as a section commander will definitely miss him. Pity that he will be renouncing his citizenship as he won't be going through 10 years of reservists together with his men and platoon mates. NS is not just serving full time for 2yrs but also after we ORDed coming back together yearly for our ICT to train together as platoon mates, sections mates and catching up with what we do as civilians and also MR together after the 10 cycle of reservists. Anyway all the best for his future endeavour...😁
Cant blame him, he never considered Singapore as his true homeland and he only did it out of sheer legal obligation, he spent most of his life in Japan.
And being Japan is so steeped in culture and how proud the Japanese of theirs, it is certainly an easy decision for him to make.
But the fact he still did it anyway deserves respect and in more ways than one, he certainly learned of valuable lessons he would never learn in his entire life as a civilian in Japan.
And I'm sure a part of him will always be proud that he was once a trained soldier, even if it was in the service of a now foreign nation.
