  • This video will explain how to raise or lower the sls system on a w140 s500 and other models equiped with rear self leveling shocks.
    Here is link
    www.peachparts....
    Here is info from link
    The SLS Valve controls the height at which the rear of the car sits. The lever arm position tells the valve to raise or lower the rear. The lever arm is moved by way of the sway bar. Which get rotated when the rear of the height of the rear end it changed. With the car running and unloaded the lever arm should be in the neutral position, which is parallel to the ground.
    Before you get started be aware that moving the lever arm of the valve with the car running will raise and lower the rear end. If it's not lifted and securely supported by the wheels with ample working room you could squish yourself under the car. Now that I've scared you away, lets get to it.
    It is a simple job, only a couple tools are required. You'll want two 10mm end wrenches, a 4mm diameter locking rod to lock the valve in it's neutral position, which is now available as part of my SLS Valve O-ring kits. This is best done with wheel ramps. The weight of the car needs to be sitting on the rear wheels as if it were on the ground.
    1. With the engine off, remove the adjusting rod from the lever arm. You'll need two 10mm end wrenches. Don't just twist the nut off, you need to hold the other side or you'll break the ball joint.
    2. Once the adjusting rod is off. Move the lever arm into the neutral position and insert the locking rod through the lever arm and and into the hole in the valve (As seen in the pic). You've now locked the the car into the proper neutral unloaded height.
    3. Start the car and let the SLS system adjust itself to the height.
    4. Then adjust the length of the adjustment rod if needed, then reattach. Remove the locking rod, and you're done.
    There are a couple reasons your ride height when set to the proper height could still be too low or too high. If your springs are tired they aren't doing their job to the fullest and will allow the rear to sag a little lower than it should despite the valve being set at the proper height. Or if the valve has been rebuilt and the lever arm wasn't put back on in the proper orientation you could have the rear sitting too high or too low, depending on how the lever arm was put on. Stay tune for the proper alignment of the lever arm and rod.

    I have a 2002 e320/w210 4matic, with the SLS. I bought the car about 4 years ago, but lately my ride has been a bunch "clunky". Nothing major, but noticeable. Recently I replaced the front struts (or should i say, had them done). When I had them done, I noticed my PS reservoir was low, so I asked about it. The guy said my rear accumulators were fine.
    I didn't believe him, so I replaced them myself. The strut (or Shock absorber, whatever) in the back looked fine, and the drivers side accumulator had a lot of fluid in it when I opened it (though the bladder itself didn't seem to be bad).
    Once I finished replacing the accumulator, the ride was smoother and no heavy clunk in the back. I filled the reservoir, and went about my day.
    This was the case for about 2 weeks, and now the clunk is back. The level in the reservoir hasn't changed, so I wondered if maybe I introduced air into the system (makes sense to me).
    I looked for burping/bleed the system, and thankfully came across your video.
    Stupid question: How many times should I raise and lower the car to properly bleed the system?
    Thanks in advance to anyone who offers up help. :)

      @@hajileserpud9539 eventually (as in earlier this month, Dec 22), I had the subframe bushings and the rear shock mounts were bad. Once those were replaced, it was much better. I also think that the car itself will always have a clunk, just the nature of the beast.
      Not sure sure the PS fluid reservoir shows signs of being low once in a while, it makes no sense. Sorry if that doesn't help you much.

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  2 года назад

      Yea sounds like you have rear sls. So one easy way to bleed the system of air is to hold your brake and gas down at same time while in drive. It’s called power braking. Just be very careful to hold brake so car doesn’t take off. This will self bleed the system. If this doesn’t work you need to check your level bar shown in video. You may have a broken rubber mount and that would cause it to go way up. Replace this and should give you better level

    Weird issue. I did this about 2 weeks ago and it improved the ride quality immensely, but it's slowly gotten worse again. Now it's crashing and banging over bumps just like it used to. What's odd is the level in the reservoir is even higher than it was initially after I bled it and topped it off - almost like it's pushing the fluid back into the res from the shocks/lines. Any experience with that?

      There's a few things that can cause this. First and easiest is check hydraulic fluid levels. Next adjust the hydraulic ride height. And last you could have bad hydraulic accumulators. These are the tops of the shocks that hold hydraulic fluid. Now there could be other things like hydraulic leaks or bad parts in system but if car is riding nice it most likely needs adjustment.

    • @petescarport

    Hey Pete. My 1992 500SEL I bought last year has had both accumulators replaced with Corteco units, but the ride is still very harsh. I finally got around to thinking about it and I know the tech who installed them didn't do the most thorough job. I assumed they just hadn't been bled. But when I got underneath it and loosened the nut and attempted to raise and lower the car with the adjuster, it did absolutely nothing. Any ideas? I might have heard something when I was at max travel but I don't know for sure.

  • @garrettdodson6110
    @garrettdodson6110 5 лет назад

    If you’re getting a hard ride or bouncy ride it’s usually not the shocks. The rear of the s class that has self leveling Does not use shocks it uses hydraulic rams to level the car. The comfort and control of the ride comes from the rear accumulators. Over time these fails and they fill with the leveling fluid which eventually causes a completely hard ride in the rear. You should really do some research and learn the components that make up this system, how they work and what they are called. But you’re on the right track! These cars are pretty solid machines when all the bus are sorted through that previous owners neglected.

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  5 лет назад +1

      Garrett Dodson you are absolutely right in most cases it’s the accumulators that go bad. This video is actually after completely changing the rear hydraulic shock (ram). Originally I removed them to change the accumulators but found the bottom strut bushing was bad and decided to change entire assembly. Once you do this, in many cases, you will get a ruff bouncy ride if air bubbles are in the lines. Many people are then told by bad mechanics that the new shocks are bad. I found someone who did a write up on how to bleed the system but there was no video. This video shows how to do the process they put. But thank you so much for filling me in and I always love to learn

    Hey Peter, Thanks for this. My car is a W140 V12 Coupe. I have a feeling my accumulators are bad. Have you got any idea where I can get instructions on how do I change them? Hydraulic system flush and bleed? Many Thanks

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  6 лет назад

      Bobby Valchev according to Mercedes and pretty much everyone I have talked to about bleeding say that it is a self bleeding system and basically any trapped air will come out by raising and lowering the system. This can also be done by adding at least 200lbs into trunk and reving engine.
      Accumulators are very common to go and the only way to know is by removing them and doing a test.
      My favorite videos and someone who is extremely knowledgeable on this is victor from restoreyourmercedes.com
      He also has a ton of helpful videos. Also please feel free to reach out as I have learned a lot myself just from doing it and researching. Good luck and remember if you do decide to change the sls completely out you will have a car that once again rides like a dream

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  6 лет назад

      Adam Hadad sounds like you have air in line. It’s a self bleeding system. Some claim that Mercedes techs even sit in trunk with at least 300lbs (2 adults) and rev engine. This will force car to run fluid to level out and get air out.

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  6 лет назад

      Joohan Kim i did change the entire shocks out after attempting to just change accumulators and save money. I wasn't happy with the condition of the shock specifically the bottom rubber bushing. My car had a loud thump and a major bouncy feel so I decided to change out the entire shock. The first few days I was extremely disappointed because the ride was very rough and bouncy. After doing research I realize I needed to bleed the system and even after putting some weight in the trunk it did not make the ride much better. After doing this video and adjusting the ride height I am blown away by how amazing the ride is. Yesterday i took it down a dirt road that I go down with my Lincoln Navigator and I didn't even feel a single bump and normally in the Lincoln Navigator it feels like you're driving a school bus. With this said I highly suggest swapping out the entire shocks if you plan on keeping the vehicle for any extended time. This is a car I plan on having for many many years.

I was just wondering if there is a way to adjust the height or did I install the wrong struts? I know there's a button in the car to rasise/lower the vehicle but that's not what I was looking for. There are videos on RUclips showing how to fix the problem on previous S class models but nothing on W220. Sigh...

    Check Kent Bergsma’s channel mercedes source. He is brilliant when it comes to repair and maintenance on mercedes Benz vehicles. From the oldies from the 60’s to present modern Mercedes. He also has a great website where you can buy parts and tools and all kinds of things. When you know where to get good quality oem parts without the dealer markup and a good Indy these owning a Mercedes isn’t any more
    Difficult or costly to repair and own than a modern Chevy or ford product.

    I think you are one of those engineers that got fired in 90' From Daimler group for designing this BEAST....and 1 billion dollars didn't go to waste....its the greatest Mercedes Benz technology ...way ahead of its time....now days The Mercedes Benz is like Toyota ( pardon me , Toyota makes great cars) Honda and all others ...Technology makes everyone equal these days...and thats the saddest part of it :(( No more PRESTIGE..No more Classe...its all the same :(
