Elvar - The Chase and The Troll

This is another installment of my series dedicated to John Gwynne's "The Shadow of the Gods" book. This piece follows the character Elvar in her pursuit of a tainted man up a mountain and the ensuing battle with a troll involving her and the Battle-Grim.
The piece starts out very rhythmic, portraying Elvar running up the mountain after the tainted man. The horns carry a version of the Battle-Grim theme. The music builds to a climax when Elvar reaches a cliff on the mountain and sees a troll.
The Battle-Grim assume their positions, and a fight ensues. The thick lower horns and dissonance from the high strings add intensity to the music. The oboes and bassoons introduce the theme of Lik’Rifa, hinting at the evil to come later in the book. The battle section climaxes with a frenzy of string trills and runs, and the horns reach higher and higher. The ending brings back the Battle-Grim theme in its entirety, signifying their victory in the battle.
