    I'd like game devs to stop asking "how big can we make this" and start judging their game's readiness in terms of "how long does this game stay fun?"

    Super Mario Bros. Wonder has 7 worlds, less levels than most other 2D Mario games, simple bosses and passable multiplayer. Yet, it is my favourite video game of all time because of the Wonder Flower effects that are unique to every level and how freeing the gameplay is (there's no time limit, so you can spend as much time as you want and look around as much as possible).
    I don't play games just because they have lots to do, I play them because of what they have to offer that makes them stand out. Is what I'm saying making sense? Probably not. Am I just commenting to boost this gem of a video in the algorithm? Yes, yes I am.

      I 100% agree. Some of my favorite games are $20 and only gave me 15-20 hours. As much as I like a game like Cyberpunk: 2077, if I had the option to replay a game for the first time between cyberpunk 2077 and Outer Wilds, I’d pick outer wilds in a heart beat.
      Also thank you for leaving the comment 😄

    *I love that were at the point where most AAA developers are going tits up 👌 it leaves room for the small developers with innovative ideas to shine and give us great games* 👍

    Speaking of short games that are engaging and very fun to play, there is this game called Pseudoregalia. A little metroidvania, 3D platformer with a N64 aesthetic, with stunning music and amazing environments for such a simple style. It's a stunning piece of work and cheaper than most games of it's caliber. If any of that piqued your interest, maybe consider giving it a go!

    I love really big games and I don't "complete" them most of the time. Makes it more real to me to have the freedom to do everything but knowing that there is alway stuff I haven't seen. I don't even start linear games nowadays. I wan't to create my own story - if I wanted to experience the ones of other people, I'd rather watch a movie.

    My favorite games in recent years have been Titanfall 2 and Halo: Reach. Neither have a very long story but I have replayed them countless times and will continue to do so in the future because they were created with quality in mind.

    The only game I enjoyed playing for "hundreds of hours" was Levelhead because user-generated content sidesteps the problem. It's not too hard to find good levels with the tools available.
    I think CrossCode is the best example of being long, complex AND chock full of quality content. One sidequest is the best example of worldbuilding I've ever seen. It's still only around 60 hours without the DLC.

      I played Hitman for hundreds of hours, but the game doesn't take hundreds of hours to play through once if you don't want to explore every little thing in every map.

    Thank you for saying this. I feel like there’s this notion, particularly among AAA devs, that every game has to have a huge open world and take 200 hours to finish, and that games that don’t follow that design philosophy are inherently lesser. There are plenty of massive games that I love, but if every game is like that it gets boring, and we miss out on a variety of experiences, some of which smaller-scale/more focused games are better at delivering.

    I judge everything I play now against RDR2. It's the only game I feel like has all the content and it's actually worth it to me. I know other people will disagree but I don't want to play a massive game unless it can compare. Been gaming thirty years and most games just aren't worth the time I wasted playing them.

    morrowind did not have as large map as new games but the map was packed with actual content and it felt as detailed as say the map in vice city or san andreas, there was hardly any area that did not have unique characters and quests. Morrowind had more actual content than starfield and it was made by 1/4 of the people. You had completely optional and missable side missions and entire factions that are hidden and require you to have specific statistics to advance through their ranks and do their quests. You can even kill a character and be unable to finish the faction quest of the main quest. For example if you are a member of the warriors guild you gonna have to kill members of the thieves guild at some point, which means they wont let you join. If you join the mages guild you have to be good at magic in order to advance through the ranks and in order to become the archmage you have to kill the telvani who are anarchist mages living in mushroom towers in a different region of the map and you have to travel there by foot. The telvani is one of the great houses which you have to join and do their quest to finish the game, but you can only join one of the 3 great houses. So much content that can be missed but it doesnt matter because you dont get xp for doing those quests, you level up by doing stuff, you cast spells you level that skill you pick locks, you level up that skill. So you could do a quest and be given a magical axe which is useless to you if you are not skilled in axes.
    For example you could for example become a monk and join the imperial cult and the tribunal temple. Their quests evolved doing things like taking a vow of silence and going on a pilgrimage, learning about the religion and reading books. Collecting ingredients for healing potions, collecting money for the poor, preforming an exorcism by going to a haunted basement and killing a ghost. You know, things that monks do. The reward for that is a skill book or a amulet with magical effects, if you are not a monk, its not that useful. So you essentially play as your character and only do the stuff that fits your role while ignoring the rest of the content, if you cant sneak, why join the thieves guild and do quests about stealing stuff? There are very few powerful weapons and armors that are very well hidden in the game. Replaying the game by visiting different areas and doing different quests or hunting down those items now that you know where they are. No need to do everything in one playthrough, unlike ubisoft games that are not repayable at all. Then there are the dungeons, copy pasted boring repettive dungeons that thankfully are short but they dont feel like they add much to the game, id rather they have less than half the dungeons and make them better and different and have their own stories.
    As you see the industry has chosen to go with copy pasted dungeons and tons of collectable that are visible in the map at all times so you MUST collect them, you HAVE TO COLLECT THEM. Meanwhile in morrowind its more natural. This industry has gotten so lazy that now with starfield they dont even make maps, they generate copy pasted maps with THE EXACT SAME DUNEGONS even in layout and loot, its absolutely pathetic. I will never forgive bethesda for ruining fallout, classic fallout was short were the majority of the content was in towns and had tons of choices for multiple playthroughs. Modern fallout has crap story because thats not the point of the game, instead of most of the content taking place in towns, modern fallout barely has any towns at all and most of the content is copy pasted repetitive dungeons and grinding for hundreds of hours and since the story doesnt matter the choices are kept to the bare minimum which means not much replay value. Bethedsa ruined fallout and rpgs and ubisoft ruined open world games, in the past open world games could be anything but the success of assasin creed and far cry has resulted into every open world game being a repetitive ubi clone. Honestly if you cut the number of side content in half, nothing of value will be lost ,case and point far cry 3 had the most towers and outposts while later games had less, but they had other side content to replace that, Ubisoft thinks 40 hours is the optimal playtime for their games apart from assasin creed that is double that for some reason. In my opinion every game gets boring after 30 hours, that doenst mean that no game should be over 30 hours, but that instead of making a 70 hour game with copy pated crap, cut that number by half and make the content that is there actually good. However the reason they make games like this is because its easier to copy paste than make good content and if a game is quality over quantity people complain its too short compared to other games, so i guess the only solution is to destroy open world games and say they are bad and we need smaller games with smaller worlds that are worth exploring and the missions are worth playing.

    As a teenager (I was around 14 years old) I already realized that I prefer short, memorable games that have a lot of replay value more than long and repetitive games that feel like a chore.
    Now I'm 26 years old and very rarely touch any game that requires more than 20h to beat. And even when I do (because the game is actually good), most of the time I beat it only once and never come back to it.

    As far as Cyberpunk 2077 goes I don't mind that the world is big with really not much to do in most places outside of a few gigs, kind of a wasteful mindset in a way but I feel it just makes the world feel more "real" in a sense. Like LA Noire that's technically an open world game but most of the map is just set dressing for where you drive to the place you actually go to. Provides atmosphere I suppose. I also don't think the map is too big, IMO it's right at the sweet spot where it feels like a real city and that you can buy that there are serial killers hiding in the wasteland without being so big that it literally feels like set dressing (which LA Noire definitely also does).
    As for the gigs and side content like the crime in progress events, I think that's more if you enjoy the raw gameplay, which I do. Just an opportunity to use your abilities and weapons in a fun way. Personally, I loved every second I spent in Night City.

      It also helps that you are getting around by a vehicle in cyberpunk. The map is genuinely a perfect size to ignore fast travel and actually drive everywhere. Honestly the only thing i wish night city had more of was small vendors like food and clothes

    A decent amount of the side content in Cyberpunk seems like it’s there if you need more money, not as something meant to be fully completed

    • @StrictlyMediocre
      @StrictlyMediocre  3 месяца назад

      I get that. But it’s not the most effective way of earning money.
      (This is more geared towards the gigs offered by fixers)
      The game is pretty big on looting. Finishing a gig (and getting the bonus) usually earns you about 5-7.5k credits a gig. If I were to fight a group of four or five thugs, I could take the loot they drop (usually rated uncommon or higher with at least one legendary rarity) I could sell the loot and usually get double the amount I would’ve earned doing a gig.
      I’ve done three playthroughs of the game and I don’t think I ever really considered doing gigs for money. That may just be me though.

    • @seth2451
      @seth2451 3 месяца назад

      @@StrictlyMediocre When you talked about the repetitive content my first thought was the NCPD alert combat encounters dotted around the map. Those are really good for making money. The gigs can be somewhat repetitive but I felt that they differentiated themselves enough by the location/objective even though I was able to stick to my playstyle for all of them. Trying to stealth through the nightclub in order to talk to/take out the prosecutor was a pretty unique scenario. Obviously they weren’t all perfect, and the Phantom Liberty gigs were definitely a step up.

    The dollar to hour ratio doesn't make sense to me tbh. When's the last time you've bought a movie? It's usually like 20 or so bucks to buy new. That movie is normally 2 hours long. So your ratio there is 1:10. But somehow people are upset about spending 60 bucks for a 20-30 hour cinematic game?
