Searching for collectable Case knives produces treasures and disappointment and brings out my inner child. I filmed case knife displays at multiple Ace hardware stores and show you the results along with my new Case XX Sodbuster Hunter Green Bone Deep Canyon Jig Bone Sodbuster

    Growing up in the 60s, the local hardware store is where we got all our sporting goods, bicycles, hunting supplies and pocket knives. It was better than going to Walmart today. I miss those days, especially at Christmas time.

    • @JohnKlahr
      @JohnKlahr  9 месяцев назад +2

      Ours sold everything from ammo to puppies and fishing worms

    • @UltraMagaFan
      @UltraMagaFan 9 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I bet it was better. Walmart is the worst. They have this policy where they won’t sell ammo to you until you’re 21, even though the legal age limit is only 18. I went in there to buy a box of shotgun shells and they refused to sell it to me (I’m 20).
      I no longer buy my knives and hunting supplies from that store because of their woke liberal bullshit. And the fact that the guy at the counter had the audacity to lie straight to my face and say it was a new state law.

      We still have 1 hardware store that carries everything. Guns, knives, electric, plumbing, etc etc. if they don't have it they'll get it for you within 2 days. Dunno how long it'll last cause that guy has to be a vampire with how old he is.

      Same Here ! Old Timer & Uncle Henry is now made in China and no longer in Hardware stores because of them getting involved with Wal Mart. No telling how many American companies was forced to go abroad because of them!

    I don't think I've ever seen a knife case in an Ace Hardware in these parts (western WA) in this century. I do recall seeing knife display cases in the 1980's (and earlier) in every hardware and department store sporting goods section. Lord only knows how much time I spent looking longingly into those cases trying to decide which was my favorite and how many papers I'd need to deliver or lawns I'd need to mow to afford it. We didn't see many Case knife displays. Western, Schrade/Uncle Henry and Buck were common. Case was a "Big City" knife store. Thanks for the trip back in time.

    You’re a great story teller. My family has that curse as well. I grew up in your era and hardware stores were the best place for boys like us in the 60’s and 70’s. Always shopping never able to afford anything on our our allowance. But someday, someday, that knife will be mine. A paper route and shoveling snow, mowing lawns in summer, we had enough and got that beautiful Case!
    We worked for our knives. The Case knife I bought was a Bowie knife, totally illegal in the city but it had the embossed Daniel Boone on the blade. I didn’t even know what I had. Not a replica, the real thing. Worth a fortune now, I figured they’d improve on this knife over time but they never did. That was it. I had the best Bowie knife Case ever made. I was young, stupidly traded it for a Kawasaki 125 enduro motorcycle with a cracked crank case and left it leaking oil on the dirt track. Bad idea but young boys are full of bad ideas. Case knives are the classic American knives.

    Just got this as a suggestion, great video! That's an old Crosman pellet revolver on your thumbnail picture, isn't it? I want to say it was called the Model T38. I remember my dad had one of those in .22 caliber when I was like 4 or 5. We used to shoot gallon milk jugs full of water in the back yard. In my experience, Case knives come pretty sharp from the factory. My issue has been rough and uneven grinds, like they used a 60 grit wheel and one side of the bevel is at 30 degrees and the other at 15 degrees.

I've been to stores from Upstate New York (where I live) to North Port Florida. I now do most of my shopping online since they typically carry a big inventory. My favorite knife store is Knife Center but if you're looking for Case then Smoky Mountain Knife Works is your store. Their Case selection is incredible.

    I bought 2 knives from Ace Hardware in the past month: Canoe in CV, and a Sod Buster Jr in black delarin handles. Both knives were sent for warranty: Canoe had terrible blade wobble so I tried to fix it and hit it with a hammer lightly, I fixed the main blade but the pen blade I hit too hard and the action was very stiff. Both bolster pins were proud after this and I decided instead of messing it up more I would send it in. The Sod buster was so off center it hit the liner and had some deformations on the apex of the blade and it had cracks on the handles by the pivot. I hope they fix them up good just got the confirmation email that they got them in today… wish me luck hahaha

    I used to have a fake katana that was maybe a foot long for cutting pizza. All of our local Ace hardware stores don't have any decent Case knives. Only stuff like cheapo Kershaw's not the nice stuff.

    Very enjoyable video. Knives and I have a checkered history...too many scars as a result of not using them properly as a kid.
    Growing up, hardware stores were the only stores I was ever interested in. I would have loved the ACE stores.
    I just have one negative comment....please pronounce Gerber properly. It is a name with German origins. The G is hard, therfore a G not a J.

      Thanks,
      I am German and know all about pronunciation. We call them "Jerber" because they remind us of Gerbils!!!

    Is the Buck knife still made in USA? I thought that since Walmart was carrying them that Buck went to China same way Old Timer and Uncle Henry did. If they’re still Hold Outs making them in the USA like Case is Then my hat’s off to them ! I own a Buck 110 I’ve had it for 4+ Decades skinned a ton of deer with it. But I’ve broke the tip off the blade & when I bought it that long ago it said lifetime guarantee. I’ve had people tell me that I could send it back to Buck and they’d replace the blade and send it back to me. But if they’ve moved to China then Fat Chance of me ever getting that done. Do you know if they’re still USA? If so do they stand behind fixing knives? If so do you know the Phone number to Buck knives Warranty Dept ?
    I’d love to ship it back and have them replace the blade if so.

      Some models are USA and some are overseas. When in doubt, check Bucks website. Or the box for made in USA

      @@JohnKlahr ..... hello John. RUclips seems to be flagging my responses as spam because I mentioned where.
      I only go through Canadian retailers as our border service have some over the top rules , so I just avoid them completely.
      The cases are comparable to your prices, but we pay much more for something like a benchmade or spyderco.
      The problems arise with seizures of folders that can be easily opened and deployed with one hand. I'm even talking knives that have no mechanical assist.
      So forget a Kershaw flipper , forget a Benchmade Crooked River, forget a Spyderco para. All fully legal to own but prohibited to import.
      No problem with slip joints and fixed blades but why risk it.
      All this grief started about the time Trudeau got into power here.
      It doesn't make sense as we have a huge rural population who use these as tools.
