Sarunas Jasikevicius addresses a question in a press conference about the absence of Augusto Lima, who wasn't present due to the birth of his child. Video: LKL
Do you know why? His mother gave up her position to play in the Olympics to give birth to him and care for him. Mad respect to his family. It's these things in life that last forever...
@MoralSingularity just a reminder that America is an immigrant nation. You love to beat your chest at how "GREAT AMERICA IS" without recognizing who makes up America. Want a specific sports example? You shoot down the value of an athlete because they train in America. Let's look at Gymnastics. Béla Károlyi (Hungarian: [ˈbeːlɒ ˈkaːroji]; born September 13, 1942) is a Romanian-American gymnastics coach. Early in his coaching career he developed the Romanian centralised training system for gymnastics. One of his earliest protégés was Nadia Comăneci, the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score. Living under the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu, Károlyi frequently clashed with Romanian officials. He and his wife defected to the United States in 1981. Since their arrival in the United States, Béla and his wife Márta Károlyi have been credited with transforming the coaching of gymnastics in the US and bringing major international success. They have both been head coach of the United States women's national gymnastics team, as well as national team coordinator for United States gymnastics at the Olympic Games. In total, Károlyi has coached nine Olympic champions, fifteen world champions, sixteen European medalists, and six U.S. national champions. Béla Károlyi was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997. Béla and Márta Károlyi as a coaching team were inducted into the US Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2000.
I'm really glad the reporter asked this question because people tend to forget the important things in life. I saw this video in late 2017 for the first time but didn't understand it well. But I must tell you, yesterday my first baby girl was born and its exactly the way the coach explains it, you forget for a while about everything else as its the most beautiful moment in your life. The only thing you can do from then onward is to live up to it because sacrifice your wife is doing is something you can never pay up.
@@DerekReznik there is one person in this conversation that clearly has no idea - but it's not me, sorry youngster. I don't even want to talk about time, amount of pension, career opportunities and the like - just the physical integrity, which is never the same again after a child, is a huge sacrifice. Or do you think it's just "nine months" and that's it? Let's either talk again when you have kids or have ever talked to a woman. I have to bring my son to kindergarten again tomorrow, I don't need kindergarten in RUclips-comments. :)
All Lithuanians should be proud of this man and his accomplishments, both as a coach, player, and a human-being. As a Terp, I will always appreciate him.
Standing here with tears in my eyes... This. Was. Amazing. The birth of one's children is... undescribable. One has to experience it to fully understand. He hit the biggest nail on the head. Respect!!!
Joshua X He played for the terps in the 90's but only played a couple seasons in the NBA at the end of his career because of a good showing for his country in the olympics
It's Šarūnas 'Šaras' Jasikevičius, currently the head coach of BC Žalgiris, a Lithuanian and Euroleague basketball club. As a player, played in the NBA, 4-time Euroleague champion, 1-time Eurobasket gold medalist and 1-time Olympic bronze medalist with Lithuania, among other things. One of the best European point guards ever to play the game. And an extremely emotional, caring man, with a huge heart. He has made huge amounts of fans everywhere he played: Athens, Tel Aviv, Barcelona, his native Lithuania. Now he's started doing the same as a head coach and, apparently, as a human being too. :D
zybergis I loved his game, so calm and collected, just like his answer here. There are some maryland highlights on here, but more international highlights
The look he gives the reporter is gold, you can literally see his brain asking "is this guy seriously asking if it is normal for someone to drop everything in their life for the birth of their child?!?"
Coach, TRUE RESPECT. Nothing more beautiful then the sight of you kids being bron, healthy, and your familly being happy. Nothing in the world more important than that. Fuck all the death glorification that surrounds the world. Alle the best and God bless you.
Reporter: Coach, what do you think about Augusto Lima going away in the midst of a series to attend the birth of his child? Coach: What do I think about it? I allowed him to go. Reporter: But is it normal for a player to leave the team during the semifinals? Coach: Do you have kids? When you have kids, youngster, you'll understand. Because that's the height of human experience. Wow, that's a good question really. Do you think basketball is the most important thing in life? Reporter: No, but a semifinal is important... Coach: semifinal? To whom is it important? Reporter: The team... Coach: Which one? Reporter: Zalgiris Coach: Did you see the number of fans at the game? Important? When you see your first child, you will understand what the most important thing in life is. Come and have a chat with me then. Because nothing can be more majestic in the world than the birth of a child. Believe me, not titles, not anything else. Augusto Lima is now in heaven emotionally. I'm really happy for him. for the english speakers

you can just see his face go from "ugh press conference" to "holy shit did that guy just say what the fuck i think he said?!?!"
priceless lol

When he said "wow, that's a good question, really", his face was like "Now let me teach you something, you lil' turd"
I wonder about that. It wouldn't be the first time a reporter set up a coach to knock down a rumor rather than just to respond to it.
