Andy & Alex a man I’ll never be is one of my favorite songs, I personally think it’s on of Boston’s best, ask feeling satisfied and party are also great on this album
Also*
Andy & Alex AWESOME!!
Your comments are really spot-on! Don't Look Back IS a GREAT album and has stood the test of time!! It's controversial rep is due mainly to being rushed to market in the wake of THE MOST GROUNDBREAKING album ever. Big shoes to fill 😎👍🏼
Standouts from DLB:
The Journey/It's Easy👍🏼
A Man I'll Never Be👍🏼
Feelin' Satisfied
Used To Bad News👍🏼
Don't Be Afraid👍🏼
The Boston 'Don't Look Back' album came out in late Summer of 1978. Of course it was greatly anticipated, however the critics ripped it, and Tom Sholz to threads over it. The criticism was that the album sounded just like the first album, it was too short, etc. My favorite from 'Don't Look Back' is 'Feeling Satisfied'. Another great track from the album is 'A Man I''ll Never Be' but it's not a "banger" so you guys wouldn't like it. Great video guys.
Andy & Alex I paused the video before you both gave your opinion on this song so it didn’t influence mine!! Too easy to be swayed by you lads.! I’ll be honest... I got a little bored in parts. It’s still a good song but it’s so easy to compare it to the first album, probably unfairly. This album should have came first and it definitely would have been thought of better. I’m terrible at explaining shit but I hope you get what I mean. Hope you’re both well lads 🤘🏼🔥🇺🇸🏴💚
Young dudes..EVERY Boston album is good. NOTHING compares to the debut..period.
rocksonline2 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
You're damn right! You want guitars? You want melodies? You want Boston!
@TheSnoop2222 awesome, banger. Gotta be in the mood for a banger though
TheSnoop2222 Cool the engines is a bright spot on a very uninteresting album
@@demonhoopa Man I love Third Stage. Honestly I love all of Boston's albums, even Corporate America which I believe is their weakest. Third Stage is a mellow album, but it has a lot of great songs.
This album is amazing! The reason people complain about this album is simple: It didn't carry the same shock value as the first. People were introduced to the Boston sound...this carried that sound and quality, fans were "used" to it so it didn't STUN them with all the new tones and and depth.
Truly, and amazing album.
The song "Don't Look Back" is my favorite Boston song . Boston was so good, they named a city after them.
Mine too!
The song Dont Look Back is extremely underrated, its a perfect balance of ascending vocals and instrumental harmonies, with an overture that kicks into high gear all carried with progressive lyrics.
For years I've always loved this song but got an even more appreciation for it when I actually looked at all the lyrics and seen that it's an anthem to self improvement, seeing things I couldn't see before but now I'm awakened and can see clearly now, the clouds are breaking, the sun is shining
Every time I hear this song it takes me back to a concert I attended oh so long ago. I've been to many many concerts including McCartney. Boston was the best concert I've ever experienced. I have never seen a band feed off of an audience and then return the favor. The crowd was frequently louder than the band. You could tell the band members were ecstatic at the reaction. When they got to this song, they brought the house down.
Now you guys know how I felt back in 1978 with Boston Rocking the House! Some of the Best Rock Music You'll Ever Hear.
I heard Boston so much on the radio growing up that I can't stand it anymore... until now seeing you guys vibe off it. THANKS FOR LETTING ME LIKE BOSTON AGAIN!
A little Don't lock back history. The second album did come out 2 years after the debit. During those 2 years the band toured non stop. The album is again recorded in Tom's basement with Tom again playing 90% of the music tracks. All songs written by Tom. To show what a perfectionist Tom is, there are 200 drum edits on just the drum track on the song ' don't look back" keep in mind, he's splicing tape witch is tedious. Tom himself was disappointed with side 2 of the record. He felt he didn't have enough time to produce it to Boston standards ( their was huge pressure by the label to get the album out. This would eventually lead to a lawsuit filed by the label) Overall the album is very good but doesn't match the power of the debut ( no album can) A man I'll never be is the highlight of the album. It's phenomenal and pure Boston.
John S - I would also like to add re: Brad Delp and the critique of his vocals; touring and singing live like those bands did (no pre recorded vocal tracks to lip sync to in those days) can MASSACRE your vocal cords. If you listen to Robert Plant sing live from 1970 and then contrast it with him live from The Song Remains the same where he had to pull so many punches to get through a performance, you can hear the toll it takes. This was a juggernaut that took everyone by surprise, and if Brad worked with a coach and babied his cords a bit by singing in his head voice more to alleviate the strain, I can’t fault him for it. To the best of my knowledge he was able to maintain his voice and deliver until his untimely death. “Don’t Look Back” both the song and album may be B-List to some, but it still towers over so many other bands A List material both then and now
@@johntaylor-jp3jy Very A List, John. ;)
I loved this album and thought it was one of their best. Their worst...their latest...Love, Life and Hope.
@@johntaylor-jp3jy I think your comments are very well said both in terms of the uniqueness of Boston and the vocal strain of rock singers back then.
Rockman, here is one note/correction: Brad Delp wrote "Used to Bad News" (not Tom). You are correct about the unfinished state of the 2nd album. The band's manager caved in and provided the tapes "as is" to CBS... before Tom was ready to hand them over.
You finally did my favorite Boston song. The reason I love it is that I was a depressed teen, and this is such an optimistic song that it helped me. It literally got me out of bed in the morning to go to school. I'm sure my mom got sick of hearing it, but I needed to hear it before I tackled that long bus ride. I didn't learn until many years later that the lead singer Brad Delp was also depressed and suicidal at times.
And yes, his voice did fade over the years and also become more monitored and toned down (edited) which is a shame.
Good word! ❤️
Hell yea..this song is so inspiring. The lyrics are what make it so special. The feelings that the lyrics and melody meld to create are very moving if you are in a dark place or feeling unhappy with your current situation.
If Don't Look Back picked you up, then The Journey and It's Easy would have you soaring! But if depressed, I guess, don't continue with "A Man I'll Never Be"... the album should be flipped to side B then.
I agree the first album is the best, can't be topped in it's entirety. But no side A of any album was ever played more by me than Don't Look Back. Must listens: The Journey/Its Easy and A Man I'll Never Be (Brad's vocals shine here).
Dude, me too. Thank you for saying that.
Thanks for playing Boston The Man I'll Never Be is MUST!!
To me, nothing in their catalog touches their '76 debut, but, '78's "Don't Look Back' LP is the perfect succession from the first release. The guitar tone & melody plus the vocal harmonies are the touchstones of the classic Boston sound. Absolutely love it!
It really sucks they were looked over yet again for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
They lack longevity...
They should just call it the music hall of fame. Too many non rock acts are in it
joedirt racing I totally agree with you on that
@@joedirtracing1462 Like Donna Summers.
Who cares. it's all bullshit anyway. Anyone with a brain and ears that work know this band is off the charts and iconic.
Don't Look Back is an excellent album. The only issue is that their debut album set the bar so high for the band, there was no way they were going to repeat that type of success...
I consider this my favorite song of all time. The uplifting lyrics, the guitar work, the soaring vocals, the pacing, drumming, everything! Ok now I will watch your video...
Don't Look Back is musically better than More than a Feeling. That is a FACT!!!!
Layers and layers of guitars! Bliss! Then that big solo with the final layer of guitar awesomeness! Turn it up!
My suggestions from this album would be; "A man I'll never be" "Feeling Satisfied" or "Party"
Oh my god. A man I’ll never be! I forgot about that song. I loved it!
@@randogirl-3 Such a great song!
@Robert G .....Best songs on the record. Kudos!!!
Cool the Engines. This is a hidden gem that you must listen to.
Ive been saying this one since day 1. But add The Launch
Wrong album, but yeah, Cool the Engines is an awesome tune. :)
I saw them tour Third Stage release... not good (imo). everything sounded so forced and unrehearsed or something,
Hollyann is a hidden gem too from that album.
Yetti Man ...Definitely! Use “Launch” to go into “Cool The Engines”. Goes together for sure. I personally love Third Stage front to back. One of those albums I’ve revisited several times since it’s release. It seems sadly ignored even though it produced 4-5 top 40 singles including a #1.
When Boston came, it was one hit after another for two years! Everyone loved Boston, they were huge!
Especially fans from Beantown!
I get mad when ppl gripe about every album after the first...I mean really, how do you follow up something that was such an EPIC debut?? The hardest thing in the world is Boston doing better than Boston...
From that same second album “Feelin’ Satisfied” is an incredible Rock’N’Roll tune!
YES!!! This tune is amazing! The whole album is crazy good!
The guitar tone sounded EXACTLY like this would've been on the first album. I think this is the only song off their 2nd album that received (and still today receives) any significant airplay on the radio.
I'd go to their next big hit, which was off their third album "Third Stage" - Amanda. It's a slow power ballad, but it earned Boston their first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 2 consecutive weeks in 1986. So that should be the next Boston track.
A man I'll never be is an awesome 6 minute ballad
Feelin' Satisfied is actually my favorite song on the 2nd album.
Great one
Agreed. Feelin' Satisfied
I gotta tell ya , it was pure torture to wait two plus years for this one back in the 70's, but TOTALLY worth the wait! I was an impatient youth. The percussion was impeccable, including hand claps...
"A Man I'll Never Be" is the best song on the 2nd album. Would easily fit in with the great songs on the 1st album.
Yes!
Yes
Yes
Excellent point what a great song
Yes is a great band too!
I had the privilege to see them in concert. It was one of the most memorable I’ve been to ❤️. At that time their song Amanda was popular.
I saw them at Red Rocks and they were incredible!!
I saw them multiple times in concert. They are/were the best. RIP Brad.
I LOVE this song! One of my favorites. I guess everyone likes what they like, but I think it's awesome. This song reminds me of a wonderful time when you met complete strangers at the 7-11, invited them to the keg party (in the middle of a field on SOMEBODY'S land), and became instant friends. Piling up in the car to party. I'm going to have to disagree with you guys. This song is perfect for me. The drums are totally on point also.
You captured the era. That is totally what it was like.
@@dragonfly1153 yep!
The song says it all. Don't look back. I don't care about comparisons to the first album or other Boston songs. This song is amazing. Boston is one of very, very few bands that are instantly recognizable. That is the holy grail of music.
You guys reacting to Boston, and it is my birthday. Life can't be be better at the moment!
Happy Birthday!! Have a wonderful day! :))
I remember my brother would play the Boston albums none stop when they came out.....walk in the house and you'd hear this song (his favorite) I didn't need to buy the LP.... I heard it every day!
This album is EXCELLENT!! One of my all-time favorites!!
Mine 2. Best voice in ROCK. EVER. PERIOD.
First two album were great, every song. After that, it did slide a little. Don't look back is one of my favorites of all music ever. Listen to it every time I am leaving on a airplane to go somewhere.
The very first Boston song I ever heard ,My sister's boyfriend brought the record over and I haven't been the same since, This song made me learn to play the guitar
Feeling Satisfied was the reason I bought this my first LP ever! Power guitar!!
Oh finally you reacted to this song i was hoping you guys would
My favorite Boston song. If the lyrics and performance of this song doesn't inspire you, I don't know what will.
Had it all...vocals,Harmony,Words,guitars,drums,bass,etc.
"A Man I'll Never Be" is the best song on the album and should be your next song listened to from this album.
Great album ! ... but doesn’t hold a candle to the first album. I believe “Don’t Look Back” is the best song from this album. 9.2
*I remember reading how Tom Sholtz felt tremendous pressure by the record company to complete this album. Tom has said that he felt that it was never finished.
Don't look back destroys More than a Feeling to me :D but that's just because I LOVE LOVE LOVE the guitar solo in Don't look back. The song is just so damn amazing and UNDERPLAYED which makes it that much better.
This is one of the songs that could hang with the 1st album. All the parts that you didn't like are my favorite parts, I love that little bridge in the middle. I think it's neat
when i played high school football i would listen to this song before the game
I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard this album, my first introduction to Boston. I had just arrived in Zaïre (Congo, 1978), and was skateboarding outside my house. My mother had arranged with some kid’s mother for him to come home over and meet me. Neither of us were too enthused with the idea, but he brought over the cassette and his own skateboard. Little did I know he would become a lifelong friend and I was beginning my journey with the greatest rock & roll band ever! Music was so extraordinary at that point in time.
2nd album was just as, almost as, excellent as the first. To me it feels like it accommodates the band more than the first album. More backup built in to the songs.
As for Don’t look back, I was really surprised with such a low rating you gave A&A. That song is just simply a 10.
Sees title, clicks link.
My fave Boston song.
Feeling Satisfied would be my pick. Could you Guys do There's Something about you? From the last Boston Album you guys reviewed. You won't be disappointed.. Enjoy your day and the music.😊🎵🎶
You are absolutely gorgeous. No disrespect.
@@joegonzalez7483 That's very nice of you to say Joe Gonzalez. Thank you.. Have a great day today.🙂
Feeling Satisfied is my favorite from this album
A man I'll never be is an all time favorite of mine. They mix the rock ballad with the hard guitar riffs perfectly
@@nefertitiscott1934 have you ever heard "Don't be late" by SAGA? I recommend you give it a try. Tell me what you think.
Watch the videos to these songs makes you appreciate it more..wish I had a time machine to take you boys back in the mid 70's and watch all the greatest music of the time..it was and still is the best ever
Listen to Satisfied and It’s a party!! A man I’ll never be is a beautiful song !!! Love Boston!!
This is a great song from them. I wish you guys would react to their official video of this song; it will give you an idea of what they were like in concert, especially how they created that unique two guitarist sound, where Barry and Tom would play in unison and then split into harmony.
You guys are such great friends. I know all these old songs. You're both so genuine. I really tune in to enjoy your friendship.
Great album no question for all real Boston fans
A man I’ll never be and feeling satisfied are my favorites from the second album
I love this album think it's just as good as the debut, keep on going my friends.....BANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT choice! Both those 2 first BOSTON albums are phenomenal! Equally great, however when the first album came out, the impact on the rock world was incredible, given that the first record is considered one of the best rock debuts ever! And unlike anything anyone had ever heard! There are some great songs on the 2nd one too. Cheers!
Dudes! I'm so glad you finally made it to Boston's second album! Like a lot of other people said, it's not as good as their debut but it's still really good. Thank you for the first review (title track) but please consider doing A Man I'll Never Be, the best ballad Boston ever did, and it's absolutely incredible.
Don't Look Back was released two years after their debut, in 1978, but was recorded mostly in 1977 just a year after their debut release. Scholz was such a perfectionist that it delayed the album's release by nearly a year. Their next album would take 8 years.
So glad you went back to Boston! Second is good but the first one is BEST!
Best Boston song!
YEP !!!PLAYED ALL THE TIME ON THE RADIO BACK IN THE DAY!!! WE LOVED IT 🥰
This is definitely the best song on the album, but A Man I'll Never Be is good too.
Totally agree A MAN I'LL NEVER BE. Is the best song on the album.
Stay lucky stay safe Mike UK.
@TheSnoop2222 might be the best song on their third album. I also like We're Ready
IMHO this is the best song on the album, not a bad album, just not as good as their first. Their debut is a classic, basically every song was played on the radio, unheard of now. As you sajd, first one couldn't be topped.
One of my favorite Boston songs!!!! Love that you reacted to this one! I would have given this song a 9.8. The whole second album, maybe an 8.9. Not as perfect as the 1st album, but still a great album. Thanks, guys! :-)
I was 13 when I bought the first Boston Album in 1978. The album was 2 years old but I knew ALL the songs from the radio. All of them.
I’m now 55 and Don’t look back is still the only song I’ve heard from the second album. It was universally considered a sophomore jinx at the time and they were completely out of fashion by 1980. However I still haven’t heard the album so I can’t say for sure how good it is or isn’t. I remember the clerk at “Music Plus” when I asked him how good the new Boston is replied “it sounds like the first album backwards”
I've mentioned before guys, this album is very good. Yes it's hard to compare to the success of the first album. This song in my humble opinion, although good, is not their best on the album. The next track leading into "It's Easy" is my favorite. "Feeling Satisfied" is a banger ! " Man I'll never be" is a classic. A few more are top notch. Just listen and enjoy the talent that made them the favorites of millions.
It's so amazing how the younger Generation are getting into listening and Loving hearing and Love Classic Rock Bands! Theses Classic Rock Bands from the 1970's including the the 80's Keep listening to many many more Great Classic Rock Bands and Jam On and Rock On!!!! 🤘🤟✊🤙👊 These Bands are from my youth! Rock On! If you two have noticed, that the shapes of the Space Ship's are shaped like Rock Guitars!
The 2nd and 3rd albums have to be discussed in the vein of the lawsuits with the record company. It affected Sholz with the immense delays, sucking the life out of the music. Music was changing then too with all the passing years between records. Read about it, Alex. Watch out when you get that contract offer! 🤣
Politics with the record company .that's why Third Stage took so long to drop
@@FernandoRiley Lawsuits.
12/3/19 I don't know how long it's been since I've really listened to this song. When this came out, I was a teen and sooo jaded by Boston's debut, I think I had a closed mind about it! Sitting here now at 5:30am, this music helped CHANGE my outlook on the day ahead! I have that grin on my face - you know the one - John Sebastian wrote about it in "Do You Believe in Magic?" : Just go and listen it'll start with a smile
/It won't wipe off your face no matter how hard you try!! So, yeah, nothing compares to the debut album, (even at the time, I felt nervous for Boston, knowing what record labels would demand,) but this stands up to the test of time quite well. Thank you Andy & Alex!
I can't say I agree with you guys this time, but I still appreciate the reaction. Bytor and the Snowdog still waiting..:)
Don't judge an album by one song . . . . The song Don't Look back flows into a great tume . . . there are amazing songs here . . . . and he never left his basement. Don't be Afraid is a total guitar tune.
Ugh, really glad you're hearing more BOSTON however, I was really hoping you would finally hear SOMETHING ABOUT YOU. Sigh, someday. ☹️
I agree. I think Something About You is the hidden gem of the first album.
Oh wow, surprised they missed that one.
Something About You or Let Me Take You Home Tonight are both great songs that they missed from the first album.
@John S #same
Yeah, they jumped ahead to the second album too quick. They're not done with the first. Something About You is a must listen.
Don't be afraid and A man I'll never be are 2 of my very favorite songs by Boston both on this album.
Love the guitar on this - give some old UFO a shot
OH HELL YEAH! Lights Out!
always thought so too
Too bad you missed them in concert...I seen them in Worcester Mass. they were so great...they played and people wanted more...they already played 8 concerts for their goodbye show...they added one more...I was there and they played every song that night they ever made...man...we rocked...
A Man I'll Never Be... great song , great album! This album is A+, debut is A ++ and Third Stage is an A...
Debut is S-tier, Mt Rushmore of debuts.
This hangs all day with the tracks from their debut album. Those moments get fewer and farther between as you go deeper in this and into their third album.
Damn good song, very surprised u guys didnt love it
So glad you covered this song. I use to rock it in my 66 Mustang GT Fastback 4 speed with my girlfriend back when it came out.
Please check out some early Journey: “Feeling That Way/Anytime”. Great 70s banger! - Minneapolis/Saint Paul, MN
Steve Manhart Yes...everybody does the later Journey (after Rolie's departure). These two tunes are awesome together!
Look Into The Future
Indeed, backed with Of A Lifetime, Kohoutek, Topaz and about another half a dozen from the first three albums.
@@charliemac64 Agreed... Journey's harmonies were just better with Rolie!
My favourite Boston track , so inspiring .. always lifts me up when I’m down. … appreciate you playing this classic guys!
Would like to see you react to A Man I'll Never Be, think you would appreciate it, for sure - definitely my fav off this album.
Greatest song ever
After the long wait between the first and second Boston albums, when I dropped the needle on this song for the first time, I knew it would be worth the wait, and it was.
try Feelin' Satisfied from this album
You both do a great job giving your perspective of how music is made, arraigned, songwriting, and other aspects. Would like to hear your reaction to Kansas' Carry on Wayward Son.
The second and third albums were good just not great like the first one. Don't Look Back is by far the best song on the album.
remohio I think A Man I’ll Never Be is also a really great song.
@@bennettgreg YES! Fantastic song!
Fellin' Satisfied to me is the best. But to each his own. :)
Feeling Satisfied is a great song
I put Third Stage just a teensy bit below the debut album not only because I love the music, but the concert blew me away! Peace!
"Used to Bad News" is awesome too guys.....Great vocals and soloing dual guitars. "Dont Look Back" Boston
You need to listen to A Man I’ll Never Be. The best song off of Don’t Look Back
Im at work but just saw this notification...been waiting forever for you guys to do this one. Will watch when i get home.
A Man I'll Never Be from this album was never a hit, but it's a beautiful song. Check that one when you're in a more mellow, deep cut mood.
2nd album not as good as first. But has a few standout tracks. This being one of them.
This song has always been a great feel-good song - very upbeat song with great harmonizing vocals and guitars. Loved listening to it at age 14 going to a tough junior high (as middle school was called back then), coming home to do homework and listening to the radio. This song was one that just helped de-stress. :)
I hear what you're saying and partially agree, but this song has a very 80's vibe that is nostalgic for some of us older folks.
You should try Amanda, We're Ready, and The Star Spangled Banner. They're not on this album, but definitely worth checking out.
Love it!! Back in my time! Thanks guys!
You guys should check out Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell. Ronnie James Dio is the singer. You won't be disappointed...
They have... ruclips.net/video/wZmZcKHpNfE/видео.html
Ronnie James Dio never could disappoint w/ his thunderous voice.
I heard this album for the first time the night before it was released. I was at the marshfield mass fair. and I knew WBCN was gonna broadcast it . so I went back to the car and left everyone else to the tilt a whirl or whatever, and sat in the car listening. that''s how important this record was to me. and I was blown away . just like the first one....
this album is awesome I thought I'd said that before.
I can't believe anyone would say that any Boston album isn't any good! All three Boston albums were amazing! Fantastic! Fabulous! Marvelous! Yes, the debut album was the best! It was unbeatable! Just Scholz and Delp! Two guys making magic! Yet, "Don't Look Back" is a fantastic song! One of my favorites! Amazing! Up there with the best songs! "A Man I'll Never Be as well!" In fact, you need to do that one. "A Man I'll Never Be" is fantastic musically and the lyrics are deep, introspective, feeling! Wow! Besides, there are only two reactions to it so far! Need more reactions to that song. I absolutely love this album. I love every song of every Boston album.
Brad Delp's voice is definitely there in "A Man I'll Never Be."
A Man I'll Never Be was a different take on the "Boston sound", a ballad with more emotion in the vocals and guitar. Feeling Satisfied is solid, but I think could have fit on the first album as well. Speaking of the first album, please listen to Something About You, and review even if you don't want to go backward to do another full reaction from the debut. It's worth the listen.
Please keep in mind younger folks. Those of us, 10-14 years old at time of 1st Boston LP
Had never, never ever heard anything like this. 🤩
It blew our minds. 8 tracks were still in lots of our parents cars. Cassettes were the new big thing. No MTV yet. Or cell phones, internet 🤣.
Here on west coast. KGON ROCKS FM. Was where we heard it all happen.
First album is a classic and will be 500 years from now.
Side note, after break up years later. Brad Delp (RIP 😞) formed a band called Orion The Hunter. Check out “So You Ran” you will immediately hear influence from his days with Schultz.
Enjoy the awesome old rock !!!
1st is better but this song is great
Glad you got to hear the longer album/concert version, as I hate the shorter broadcast version. My favorite concert ever was Boston in San Diego in 79. Nothing better - ever.
Let's hear some BTO Let It Ride some good ol Blue Collar rock and roll
This was my First band to see In Concert in April of 1979. And it blew my fuckin mind. We sat on the end of the row and joints, one after another, was going back and forth. Dude behind me taped on my shoulder, and I saw a joint as big as my thumb. Also the Microdot Acid made it even better.
