Still remember burning through this series for the first time. One of the greatest adventures I’ve ever been on and I re-read it like once a year. No one has ever made the heart yearn for a place that doesn’t exist like Tolkien. Great video
Converting to Catholicism estranging Tolkien and his mother from their family has to do with the conflict between Anglicanism and Catholicism since the 16th century when the King broke from off from the Pope. It was punishable by death for a good while, but even by the time of the 20th century when penalties were relaxing, Catholics were still seen as outcasts and met by hostility from the culture at large.
That is very important context that we should have added. Lots of thing got left unsaid in this video, so I (Richard) am glad the comment section is adding well to the discussion of this great man.
It is really appealing to watch and listen to you guys, even though I myself had long time ago known all things you two have discussed in the podcast, to just sit and watch this podcast of other Tolkien's fans was undeniable joyful
When you read more about Èowyn you’ll find that just like all of her ancestors they openly embraced the gift of Eru Illuvatar! They aren’t afraid of death at all so they are the men least swayed by evil due to this long tradition since the days of Eorl The EverYoung, which he and his ancestors took part in the war that lead to the men that were blessed with Numenor etc they either denied the blessing or simply was already heading back elsewhere so they didn’t receive that but yeah. Rohan wouldn’t have existed into its founding without a HUGE set of actions by Galadriel too
There were several letters he had with a particular man and I think even his bestie CS Lewis and another special author about these men in black who came to him I recall three times to recruit him for something and the way in which the letter spoke of them in Tolkiens own words was that he spoke of them as little boys and he wasn’t afraid of them whatsoever and sent them along on their way each and every time. There are many amazing letters shared in another rare book talked about on a very cool channel called high elven wisdom. She too was born and lived in South Africa as well as Tolkien and may not look it but she’s also pretty old too. She is full of wisdom even when she’s doing studies on several of his books. Her studies on several topics are expansive and o found useful several years ago in my life.
Oh and a very nice video to watch on Galadriel is by the channel named Nazgol. She’s a very cool lady with a similar name to Nazgûl literally which is interesting. I believe it’s her actual name too. Dino if it’s a surname or not though. I could be wrong. It’s what’s coming to me now
Epic guys I love to see your passion and talking about this. Keep up the great work I know it's probably a struggle you're doing great love it love it love it love it.
superb RE: green screen and CGI in movies - a Star Wars actor had the same reaction as Ian Mclellan to working with fake sets and fake other actors. very, very unpleasant. That may be part of why CGI movies come across as lifeless.
Even Richard looks down on Faramir By calling him Boromirs brother lol
The research must've taken a lot of time. Good stuff here gentlemen
Thank you for the compliment. It was a lot of fun.
