That's the LRM variant, which has two LRM-10's (although in this case it looks like it has SRM-6's), to deliver the same 20 damage potential but at long range. I tend to use that variant in Battletech to keep up its ranged potential until it can close with that axe.
Sadly, this was during Tyco's decline before being bought by Mattel, and not to mention these came out during the whole FASA/Harmony Gold lawsuit over mech design rights (which I've heard that both these and Exo Squad's Robotech toys got caught up in that, if not the cause of it).
I wish I would have had these BattleTech toys back in the day as a kid. I enjoyed the PC games and even the cartoon these toys are from (even if the show is a bit cringe worthy now). I'd especially would have liked the Axman since it is a mech that doesn't make it into any of the games. Luckily it's close cousin the Hatchetman will be in the new BattleTech game Flashpoint expansion. Still though, no Axman...yet.
It's quite obvious that the BT toys had to sacrifice accuracy and finer details for playability, very doubtful six years old kids back in '95 were playing the table-top miniatures game and getting fully immersed in the story universe so these had to have a bit broader appeal. The whole thing, in my opinion, was a big wet fart, the animation in the cartoon was awful and amateurish, the story was weak and the toys were clunky and Tyco Toys soon went belly-up before the 90s ended but if it helped introduce BT to newer fans then it helped in some way. Although the computer games did a better job at that.
I don't get why you are upset about the figures (other than they're too big, and it'd lose all articulation if you made it smaller. I don't remember Dino Riders having knee articulation...at all.

Had had the entire collection. Loved it and wish they made more.
