Cecil and Kain leaving the castle at the beginning is still one of the most epic moments in Final fantasy. You knew you were in for one hell of a adventure.
I know what I'm about to say is kinda cliché, but honestly, I've played FF4, start to finish, about a dozen times, and I still get chills during that sequence. "Thus..."
This was my very first Final Fantasy game, back when it was called Final Fantasy II in the early 90s for the SNES. This is also one of the first video games I ever played when I started playing when I was 6 years old. This holds a special place in my heart and will always be one of, if not my favorite in the series. I would not be the gamer, nor the person, I am today if not for this game.
I was 10 when it came out and to me at the time it was the greatest thing ever. It's still my favorite rpg and only slightly behind Super Metroid for favorite game of all time.
I was around 6 almost 7when I got this game when i got a SNES for Xmas in 1991. I played it so many times. I loved this game and played the NA version like 16 times. So, I know exactly what you mean.
It was also My First Final Fantasy Game back when It was Final Fantasy II on SNES... Still ranks as one of My All Time Favorites too... I have the Complete Collection on PSP and really enjoyed both the Original and The After Years... It's just a Solid Game and has stood the Test of Time... 👍🏼
Thank you for this. FF4 was my first rpg, and the game that taught me video games could be more than points, platformers, and shooters. Where it isn't my favorite final fantasy. It will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart ❤️.
I think a lot of people the world over feel the same way about IV: it may not be the most popular game in the series, but nearly everyone agrees that it is one of the most important ones for the impact it had on the industry and especially overseas.
I can still hear the Red Wings theme song in my head any time I see this opening sequence... it was so EPIC playing it for the first time on my SNES...
This was my first "real" RPG. I think I was 7 at the time. For some reason, I distinctly remember that blurb on the front of the box saying that you could have four saved games, and I interpreted that to mean you could only save four times EVER. Naturally, that meant I just tried to marathon it for as long as I could to preserve those precious saves, until I eventually just died (which was to, of all the things, the sahagin in the Anna/Edward battle cutscene. I have NO idea how I pulled that off). Thankfully, my (much older) sister pointed out that I was an idiot, and I played it through normally after that.
I know these probably take a hillgigas-ian amount of work to make, huge props. I ran into the channel through the history of 1, 2, and 3 and it made me want to play them on original NES (so thankful for bugfix-only romhacks!). It was so awesome to experience all the details on these videos on the actual games as they were originally, while also knowing who did what and recognizing the vast majority of the names on the credits! This inspired me to play/replay the whole series in order, regardless of whether i had or hadn't played it yet. I'm a couple of hours into 6 (also SNES version, as i did with 4 and 5, using fan translations of even 4 and 6 to keep close to original experience). Thanks for all the work! I discovered this channel while being sad about the end of DFFOO and this inspired a more in depth way of engaging with the series that was my introduction to RPGs back when FF7 blew my mind as a preteen. Can't wait to see more episodes as we get through the 16bit era and into 3D and the magical PS1 trilogy!
took me three months to find time to sit down and watch it all but worth it. thanks for your hard work in putting forward this fantastic high quality video. wish you well. take care.
I have been playing Final Fantasy sine the first game and FFIV has always been my favorite. I have fond memories of renting it with my best friend at the time and playing through it over a summer break (renting it multiple times in a row to do so) and though she is no longer with us I know she would appreciate this coverage of a game we both held dear. I have always felt that FFIV is often overshadowed by other games in the series. Even though they weren't used often, it blew my mind that the town guard, White, Black and Red Mage sprites were reused and seeing them in full 16 bit glory was amazing. Thank you for covering my favorite game and shedding more light on it.
This game was my introduction to the FF series so many years ago on the SNES and has a special place in my heart as a gamer (if you couldn't tell). It was the first game that truly captivated me. I remember so clearly watching my friends play this new game and that first scene I saw of Rydia summoning Titan. Thanks for this trip down memory lane.
An absolute masterpiece! Love the characters and story! Cecil becoming a paladin and learning Golbez is his brother was such an awesome plot twist. I still love this one more than III/VI. This game was a BIG part of my childhood. The music always takes me back. I play this at least once a year. It is a staple in RPG’s for me.
I feel like when we talk about our first final fantasy game, it could bounce between 1, 7 and maybe even 14 or one of the more recent releases. For myself, it was FF2 (which was FF4). My cousin had all these SNES games that he would let me play and he had FF2 that he had filled out with so many of his endgame saves. He let me take one slot for myself and from there, I just fell in love with the game, the story, the music and just about everything with it. I like to think I jumped into Final Fantasy with the best possible title to choose from.
wow, big difference when you bring up how many projects overlapped with III, V, Secret of Mana AND Chrono Trigger. Also I gotta hear Celtic Moon and the piano arrangements!
Funny that this video came out right when I was planning to replay Final Fantasy IV DS. That was the game that really sparked my interest in other FF games.
Another well-crafted video, it's being able to re-live past games that we fans/viewers can wait as long as we do for your hard work to pay off in videos like this. Thank you.
Like many here, my first rpg experience and favorite game of all time. What they managed to pack into that old SNES cartridge, optional dungeons and bosses, all the characters, the music, the story, GOING TO THE FRICCIN MOON! Blew my mind as a kid A true testament to the power of video games as an artistic and storytelling media that has always stuck with me.
These history deep dives are, by far, my favorite content that you create. I really appreciate the hard work you put into these deep dives. It would be interesting to see what the original Final Fantasy IV would have looked like. I understand why they canceled it, but I'll always wonder.
This was my first final fantasy game when i was a kid. Absolutely love seeing this. Ff2/4 was my gateway into jrpgs and i cant say that is a bad thing. This is one of my favorite games of all time.
Thanks for this one! 33 years after I first played it, I still consider this to be my favorite entry in the series. As a general rule I only buy/keep one version of games; I own at least five versions of FF4.
I got "Final Fantasy II" because it was on the cover on Nintendo Power, so that print media blitz paid off in my case. The artwork and coverage were so interesting. I rented it a couple of times, but I could only get to the underworld before I had to return it. Once I owned it, I played it constantly. I ended up making a big Excel workbook with info about characters, items, weapons, armor, magic, and a complete bestiary. I can still recite the white & black magic spells in the order the SNES manual printed them. I was fascinated. Thank you for making another fantastic video, and about the game that made me a Final Fantasy fan! In an attempt to make this comment relevant: something to keep in mind when talking about sales of Final Fantasy Chronicles compared to other releases is that it was the first time the original game, rather than just the dummied-up Easy Type, was available in the US. Also, it included Chrono Trigger with new cutscenes, which was a pretty big boost to sales.
When I was 10, I rented this game along with FF6 (3 at the time) and absolutely fell in love with this game. I rented it so many times that when the video store closed the owner gave me the game. Even though I know the game is flawed, I love the world and the characters. And it wasn't until I got to highschool and joined the band that I realized just how much I fell in love with the music too. This game will always hold a special place in my heart, and I'll always buy every new release of it to show my support for this gem of a game. I have the same kind of feelings for this game that a lot of people have for FF6, and that'll never change.
This was an awesome video! I have played 4 many times. I've owned it no less than 3 times and have never actually completed it. Hoping to change that with the pixel remaster and this video is inspiring me to do that sooner than later.
It's past 3 am but I was enthralled by this video I couldn't stop watching. I thank everyone who contributed to making and narrating it. A product that is precious memories for many people was a nightmare to make for the creators. Too bad FF4 was made before I've been to this world so I wouldn't know how it felt when it's first released. I liked the bit about children being scared of Amano's work. Me who experienced final fantasy as an adult it never occurred to me how the experience is for the younger generation
What an amazing deep dive, there's so much to it that I just wasn't aware of. I came to this game late, and remember using your guide on what the best version to play was, but didn't realise just how many times it had been released, and the challenges that came with each one. It's gone on to be one of my favourite in the series!
Final Fantasy IV is my favorite game in the franchise, I'm glad to see such a thorough video on it. I personally was not a fan of The After Years though. Anyways, one thing I had a problem with: how you pronounced Ys 😅 It's pronounced "eese." Basically, take the word "geese" and remove the G. You get eese and that's how you say Ys. 😊 Great video!
The best experience was getting this when it released.....I remember how it just blew everyone away because there really wasnt anything else like it, or even remotely as good. Because of that, its always stayed my favorite in the series.
There's a lot of work over Final Fantasy IV versions, but once again i'm glad to see your granular style over these games. I love FF4 & FF4:TAY. FF4:TAY is one i like a lot more than another FF sequel, FFX-2.
I am recently experiencing the original 6 games for the first time thanks to the pixel remasters coming to xbox. I was pleasantly surprised with FF4. I do remember playing a little bit of the SNES version around the time of 7 coming out at my brother in laws advice. Wish i had played through it then.
Well done! I did always wonder about the reasoning behind the US FF releases on Super Nintendo. I think I heard "You spoony bard!" a long time ago. Now I know where it came from. ❤
This is a long video, I'll watch the whole thing when I get to it, but I just want to say that FF4 was the first Final Fantasy game I ever played (as FF2 on SNES), and it's great. The difficulty seems to ramp way up when you get to the moon, but I probably just don't know the advanced strats to breeze through it.
I've always wondered about the reasoning behind the chibi box art of IV and V, and who did them... I don't know why it never occurred to me it was Shibuya; I mean, they look like the in-game sprites! 🤦♂️ I recently acquired a vintage magazine ad for FFIV Easy-Type, it's got that box art blown up to a full two-page spread. 😌👌
Knowing Mr Uematsu didn't take a day off for 14 months and even slept in the work place simply to not miss when the inspiration comes to him makes me appreciate his efforts and admire him and the team during 4 development even more
This was the first game I ever played to completion back in the 4th grade. It was called Final Fantasy 2 on my SNES. Took me over 70 hours to beat that bad boy!
Wow, I didn't think that Chrono Trigger had started that far back. I really would've loved to see how the Final Fantasy comic would've turned out. Excellent retrospective.
The absolute beginning for me! What an epic story and world! This game shaped how I look at games forever! I'll be here for the whole thing Darrel! Spin me a tale, thankyou for the work you do!
FFIV is my favorite game of all time! I'm 38 I've been with the series since the beginning. The overworld theme of FFIV makes me think of my father often who introduced me to games and Final Fantasy. I love Kain, Rydia, and Edge. I'm one of the few I know who really appreciated After Years, not so much for the story, just for the call back and "one more time" with the guys. Much like how time flows in the Fechmarch, I feel like I grew up with Rydia.
I was thinking about how moving to doing gameplay design and story simultaneously really shows in FFIV. The most obvious would be Cecil becoming a Paladin, his mechanics we're synergistic with his character arc. There's also stuff like Tellah having Meteor but not the MP to cast it until that important story moment, Palom and Porom having the Twincast to give them a mechanic tied to their unique relationship, or the way Rydia aged up from her child to her teenage self which came with some shift in what equipment she wear and becoming a full-fledge Summoner. Coming from the NES-era where abilities were more-or-less unrelated to what was going on in the game's narrative, the shift in design philosophy definitely made FFIV more memorable as a game.
Aside from Mystic Quest, FFIIa was my first Final Fantasy. I still think changing the Package to "Bomb Ring" or "Carnelian Signet" was a poor idea, since just calling it a Package was more obfuscating.
This is the first one i ever beat. My step brothers wouldnt let me play 1 on our nes because they were scared id screw up their save file since i was very young. But when 4 came out i rented it multiple times till i beat it. They didnt beleive me even after telling them how it ended. Untill one of them beat it about a year later lol
When we got our SNES, we got 3 games initially with it: Super Mario World, Final Fantasy II (US), and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Final Fantasy II US ended up being the first RPG I ever played, and it is still my #2 favorite Final Fantasy. Characters, storylines, artwork, and design have stuck with me and have been one of the bigger influences in any of my hobbyist creative activities (e.g. writing, game design prototyping, music). An absolutely timeless masterpiece.
My first RPG ever, back in 1992. I love this game so much, so many memories... The Four Fiends OST, Into the Giant OST, Cecil and Kain leaving Baron Castle, the Battle with Valvalis ("must stop her spin! Kain, Jump!), The Big Whale, the Credits Roll OST, Rydia returning to the party as adult, the Frying Pan dealing 9999 damage, etc etc etc... Thank you/Muito obrigado!
Right? How would final fantasy be today if Sakaguchi stuck with mindset to focus solely on gameplay and ignore the plot/characterization. Would ff4 still be received positively, or would it flop? Maybe it would've turned out to be like Zelda, chrono trigger or the first ff, good visuals and battle system but the party memebers are blank slates Reading how ff9 was the picture perfect of how a ff game should be in Sakaguchi's opinion it's fascinating discovering his earlier vision of how a game should look like
Final Fantasy IV had one of the most enjoyable stories for its time. It was the first game in the series I played shortly after it's release in the U.S. on SNES as II. It's my favorite game in the series. From there, I got every single game for the series, including re-releases and remasters.
Wonderful video as always, thanks so much for this. I finally finished FFIV last year for the first time after having started it on numerous consoles ;). I still probably have the Nintendo Power article for FF2 lying around somewhere, with the cover art of Cecil riding a Black Chocobo.
Rubicante remains to this day one of THE BEST bosses in FF because even while he was an antagonist, he was still honourable and wanted a fair fight with us at full health. He could easily have flicked his wrist and left Cecil and crew dead on the floor after that trek up the tower, but he decided to fight us fairly. Left a lasting impression on me
Final Fantasy VI was my first FF game. It holds such a special place in my heart and I'm pretty sure I own too many copies of it xD Thanks for shing this wonderful game some love, mates.
These videos have greatly influenced my admiration to SE, I had no idea they truly came from the bottom of the industry into a powerhouse and I just love how rich their universe of characters and stories are
if i were child have famicom at 90s this is will be my first Final Fantasy , although this is my 4th Final fantasy ... i was played this on Playstation 1 at 2000, even i wish they make it full 3d remake like FF 7 right now
It's so cool to see behind the scenes stuff when it comes to classic games. As a huge SaGa fan (and FF of course) it always makes me super happy when it's mention how well SaGa 1 for Square at the time. Seeing as how we're in a very long coming worldwide golden age for the series it's easy to forget how aside from the Gameboy games the series never took off outside Japan, hell I'm still a bit scarred by the gaming magazine reviews of the PSone titles.
1:26:12 "Máire" (anglicized as "Moira") is not an easy name for foreigners to pronounce, but I'll never understand why so many non-hibernophones (in both the UK and Japan) pronounce "uilleann" as though it had three syllables.😅
I'm currently playing the 3d remake of IV, and I'm absolutely enjoying this game so,much. There are some parts in the game that honestly pulled at my heart strings especially Porom and Palom's sacrifice. Rydia has become my favorite in the game along with Cecil. Edit: the music and the opening theme are my favorite
The PSP version of Final Fantasy IV is my single most favorite videogame of all time (tho I've mostly played the 1.1 ROM with the free enterprise randomizer most). I'm glad this series got here and will continue.
Oh how i love the ritual of receiving the notification of the upload of another making of video, pour myself a glass of wine, cast the video to the TV and enjoy the Final Fantasy Goodness. While I was aware of the initial intention of developing IV for the Famicom, I didn´t knew anything about the details and how convoluted was that of marketing V before IV prior to the cancellation of famicom version. Quite an interesting part of the video for me.
"Thus..."
Couldn't agree more. I would extend that to all of gaming when you consider the stakes of the scene and the epic music.

GAME CHANGER
Same. And still my favorite game of all time.

Rydia returning during the battle with Golbez in the dwarf crystal room was epic.. jaw dropped, hyped, and just overjoyed she came back as an adult
As soon as the music changed to the super boss theme my adrenaline went thru the roof!
That was one of the greatest boss fights of all time. The scripting of it was perfect
FINALLY!!! One of my favorite FF games is getting a Complete History episode!
>See FFUnion posted on my favorite final fantasy
Lets go
>Sees it's almost 2 hours long
LETS GO

FF 4 will always be my favorite in the series. Thanks for a great video!

Everyone grind out their 99+ alarms, we're in the long haul for Pink Tails with this gem of a movie.
Wish that was in the NA game back when i grinded out 2 of the damn things on SNES
This game was my introduction to the FF series so many years ago on the SNES and has a special place in my heart as a gamer (if you couldn't tell). It was the first game that truly captivated me. Another fantastic deep-dive, and on one of my top childhood nostalgia trips! Your dedication is truly incredible

I prefer the excellent psp 2d version
“You spoony bard!”

These history deep dives are, by far, my favorite content that you create. I really appreciate the hard work you put into these deep dives.
It would be interesting to see what the original Final Fantasy IV would have looked like. I understand why they canceled it, but I'll always wonder.
I’m relatively new to Final Fantasy, but I love the history behind these. Keep them coming!
This was my first final fantasy game when i was a kid. Absolutely love seeing this. Ff2/4 was my gateway into jrpgs and i cant say that is a bad thing.
This is one of my favorite games of all time.
Great research and video. Let's see if we get that 7th revision of the story someday.
Thanks for this one!
33 years after I first played it, I still consider this to be my favorite entry in the series. As a general rule I only buy/keep one version of games; I own at least five versions of FF4.

Another brilliant episode. I've always loved FF4 but I'm so excited for some later games. You guys are amazing
This was an awesome video! I have played 4 many times. I've owned it no less than 3 times and have never actually completed it. Hoping to change that with the pixel remaster and this video is inspiring me to do that sooner than later.
I really appreciate how in depth some of your videos are when it comes to final fantasys development, definitely a relaxing watch

*Final Fantasy IV:* One of THE Best Epic *FF* Games there is!
This was my first FF on the SNES and a legendary game. Thanks for covering this.
Absurdly impressive video. There was so much I didn't know about this game.
Well done! I did always wonder about the reasoning behind the US FF releases on Super Nintendo. I think I heard "You spoony bard!" a long time ago. Now I know where it came from. ❤

I don't know why it never occurred to me it was Shibuya; I mean, they look like the in-game sprites! 🤦♂️ I recently acquired a vintage magazine ad for FFIV Easy-Type, it's got that box art blown up to a full two-page spread. 😌👌
Thank you so much for this! Your hard work is appreciated!
This was a fantastic video, I learned quite a lot actually. Now please, make one for Final Fantasy IX.
Don't worry, I'll get there eventually. At the moment we're working on Mystic Quest and Final Fantasy V :) ~Darryl
This is still the best final fantasy game in my opinion. I love the difficulty and the complex characters. The monsters are also the coolest looking
Nice a new vid. Thumbs up now and I will watch when I'm off work. I'm excited for my drive home now.
Going from FFI to FFIV (II in the US) was a crazy leap for me.
I liked After Years too. Mostly just cause it was quite fun :)
This came out at the perfect time, I just beat FF4 for the first time the other day.
While not my first Final Fantasy game(first was FFX), FFIV is still dear to me as being not only my 2nd FF but also the first one I ever beat
I still think changing the Package to "Bomb Ring" or "Carnelian Signet" was a poor idea, since just calling it a Package was more obfuscating.
only my 2nd/3rd most fave FF but Cecil is my most liked Protagonist of all!
Loved this so much. Best vid in the series so far. Super excited for future entries!
This is absolutely incredible. Thank you for all your hard work to make this happen
Lowkey FF fans owe a massive debt to Torishima.
That conversation changed everything.
Right? How would final fantasy be today if Sakaguchi stuck with mindset to focus solely on gameplay and ignore the plot/characterization. Would ff4 still be received positively, or would it flop? Maybe it would've turned out to be like Zelda, chrono trigger or the first ff, good visuals and battle system but the party memebers are blank slates
Reading how ff9 was the picture perfect of how a ff game should be in Sakaguchi's opinion it's fascinating discovering his earlier vision of how a game should look like
Final Fantasy IV had one of the most enjoyable stories for its time. It was the first game in the series I played shortly after it's release in the U.S. on SNES as II. It's my favorite game in the series. From there, I got every single game for the series, including re-releases and remasters.
Lots of inspiration from star wars
Amazing game, amazing video! Thank you so much!
I’d love to see a video about Edge. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a video dedicated to him.
Wonderful video as always, thanks so much for this. I finally finished FFIV last year for the first time after having started it on numerous consoles ;). I still probably have the Nintendo Power article for FF2 lying around somewhere, with the cover art of Cecil riding a Black Chocobo.
YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST
Fantastic video as always! Im curious if the cancelled FF4 had parts that were used in future projects?
Come, i shall heal your wounds. Face me at full strength!
Left a lasting impression on me
I named so many video game characters “Cecil” when I was growing up because of this game.
almost named my kid Cecil... ended up going with Fenris though, with his moms last name his name translates to Wolf of the Oaks.
I remember the hype for the comic, was disappointed it never appeared
Ok now we need a Crono trigger video. I didn’t know the goats worked on that too 😭
Final Fantasy VI was my first FF game. It holds such a special place in my heart and I'm pretty sure I own too many copies of it xD
Thanks for shing this wonderful game some love, mates.
Ooh I've been waiting for this one!
Thanks for the upload!
I was so distraught when the twins saved the party by effectively sacrificing themself. You even get the prompt to try to help in fain
These videos have greatly influenced my admiration to SE, I had no idea they truly came from the bottom of the industry into a powerhouse and I just love how rich their universe of characters and stories are
if i were child have famicom at 90s this is will be my first Final Fantasy , although this is my 4th Final fantasy ... i was played this on Playstation 1 at 2000, even i wish they make it full 3d remake like FF 7 right now
One of the first final fantasy games I've played on the 3ds, good stuff
Lol ostrich filming 😂 that was especially an idea😊
I finished final fantasy IV so many times
Sweet! Same day they announced Pixel Remaster retail release for oct 8
Just watched the I-III video before this one. Well done and I hope I get to watch the V video soon
Enjoyed the content! Great job!
The PSP version of Final Fantasy IV is my single most favorite videogame of all time (tho I've mostly played the 1.1 ROM with the free enterprise randomizer most). I'm glad this series got here and will continue.
When Rydia returns as an adult, that was the most defining moment in this game! 💚💚💚💚💙
Woot I was looking forward to this video from you guys. Love this game and I beat the pixel remaster on my Switch not that long ago. 😊
