  • Though not everyone agrees on exactly how iconic architecture should be preserved, there are those who take a real shot at it, with a goal of resurfacing the original vision.

Thanks for the nod on my naming of the Rainbow House. As an associate with Bob Crane & Associates in Hollywood, I sold this John Lautner creation twice. I commissioned Julius Shulman to photograph the home. The interior shot you include in this video showcases the interior design of one owner, interior designer Tim Cotterell. Tim designed a neutral gray palette taken from the home's stonework and strategically placed splashes of rainbow color against it, most notably in the neon rainbow sculpture, the custom carpet, and sofa pillows. I'll never forget the day Tim stepped out on Mulholland Drive and cut the exterior growth. He pulled a large tree-like cutting into the house "to connect the exterior again to the interior," he said. Divisions are an integral theme of this architecture. Tim used the tree to divide the living and dining areas as the photos show. I hope you have photos of the master bedroom from this period. Tim designed a platform bed to float on an acrylic base above the floor. Embedded in the carpet were tube lights that extended forward from the interior at an angle reflecting and connecting with the angle of the Hollywood street lights in the distance below. The drama at night was stunning. Academy Award-winning songwriters Alan & Marilyn Bergman almost got a divorce over this house. Marilyn wanted to buy the home, badly. Allen didn't. They wouldn't stop arguing. I suggested they go home and write a song about the house. Maybe that would resolve their conflict. They fought emotionally and endlessly over the house until another buyer stepped in and bought it. The Rainbow House didn't get their music. The home originally was commissioned from John Lautner by a pianist and symphony conductor, whose name escapes me now. I may have the name in my files. Near the fireplace originally stood his composing piano, looking out over Nichols Canyon. Tim wanted to pay homage to this history by installing a custom acrylic piano in the same spot, but the design budget ran dry. The pool is a striking addition to the home since. It's perfection. Having built a similar concrete footed pool next to a waterfall at another house on Jalmia Drive in Nichols Canyon, I know the astronomical cost, requiring decades to recapture. Owners become possessive over John Lautner's architecture. I tried tirelessly to get Lautner's Chemosphere House nearby but never succeeded.

Fabulous house but a shame the music is mixed too loud and I can't hear what the guy is saying!

Thanks for this wonderful vid. It really brought the extraordinary house to life! Given all the glass, I do wonder if it’s especially costly to cool during peak summer? In any event, congrats to the owners! :)

Most people would have cut the tre's down to byuild the house, that's a stupid comment. They look like they are thriving still.
