What do you have the RF gain set to on the 891 to get any kind of reliable S-reading? My gain is usually all the way up, so the needle doesn't generally move for me.
Yaesu says the “all the way up” setting is the right one. When you pull it back that change in S-units is compensating for the reduction. The 991A does the same thing. BTW…if the RF seems too high you can use IPO or ATT or even mess with the AGC settings. The 891 seems very sensitive to me.
RF Gain is all the way up. It will decrease the signal level otherwise. Ain't nobody got time for that. If yours is all the way up (clockwise) and your needle isn't moving I would wonder if something is wrong with it.
That's my deal, Mike. Mobile mobile mobile. I love it. Using a SharkHF mini right now but I'm about to grab a yaesu atas 120a for the mobile. I love going to a park and just getting at it. First, props for singing Davey Crockett. Second, Stanley Cup makes the best mirror decoration (Let's Go Red Wings) Third, Holllllllly cow that's a lot! I have to get my stuff to get mobile, and get activating some parks. I've got about 10 within an hour of me. I just need a battery, and a more portable antenna. I'm having trouble figuring out what size battery to get though. Running a 991a, would a 15 ah battery be enough to operate for at least an hour running 80 watts?
You're not going to go to Davy Crockett Nat'l Forest and not sing Davy Crockett. That Stanley Cup has been on my mirror for about 20 years. One of my old band mates is a machinist and he made it. It's solid aluminum I think??? The 15 amp would be plenty enough for an hours use, absolutely. I'll usually use about ~5-7 amps on an outing depending on how hard its hitting. I don't know how much I used on this outing but I would guess about 10 amp hours. Depends on how much you're transmitting. Activations like these are pretty much a 50% duty cycle.
HA HA . I missed myself on the first go of this video. KD2UBJ two parks for you. You type fast enough. BTW I was 10w into EFHW sloper for that QSO from WNY.
Mike....you re really a lucky guy !!! OMG, what a pile up !!! 309 contacts, because you are a really very talkative guy !! ha ha ha ha !! you should have make many more contacts !!!...... hope to be in one of your videos one day, activating french parks !! awesome...Pascal f5pnp
You know Pascal, the more of you over in Europe that are getting out doing POTA, the more awareness people will have about the program and the bigger the pileups will become. Trust me, it didn't start out like this I assure you. But over the years, the popularity of POTA has taken off in the US. It's up to you guys over there to make it popular by getting out and doing it. Maybe do some videos to share on RUclips? I would absolutely love to get you in the log! I rarely hear France from Texas. That would be great! 73
Hi Mike, would a Wolf River Coil and whip screwed into a car mount work similarly to your Tarheel set up here? Would you need to put out counterpoise wires like you do when using the WRC out on the ground? Thanks so much for any thoughts/advice here.
It most certainly will. Works great in fact. No counterpoise needed. The only drawback is when you want to change bands you have to adjust the antenna manually which takes a few minutes.
I got a big tarheel amd cant get it to hold tune. Im not sure if propogation is affecting my swr. I would think that it would not, as the swr depends on the impedance of the radiating element. But Figured id give you a shot amd see if youve had any similar experience. My antennea is mounted on a truck, and it does see alot of abuse(live in rural area). It has held up extroardinarily well. It gets the snot beat out of her and she keeps tickin.
Propagation has nothing to do with SWR. How well do you have it connected to the truck? Is any of the ground side connected to the body at all? I don't have anything other than the mount digging into the metal of the trunk. Never had a problem holding tune. Sure I could ground it better and get a wider bandwidth but I've not had any issues so far. Been on for about 3 years now I think.
POTA and SOTAs are my coolest part of the HAM radio hobby. Outside of the city noise and interference, breathing fresh oxygen and playing radio. Priceless! BTW, what apps are you using for logging your POTA contacts ?
Ah thanks for reminding me about that. I'm 99% sure it's this MFJ Whip. Also is a link to the quick disconnect I use. MFJ Antenna Whip: mfjenterprises.com/products/mfj-1964?_pos=23&_sid=c371cf9ad&_ss=r Antenna Quick Disconnect: amzn.to/3tSlX9l
It is easy. Just call cq. You say their callsign, they say yours, repeat. Don't over think it. I don't get the lobe part though. I don't know where you are but you got a 5 call. If you're ever in the area hit me up. I'd be happy to pota with you.
No way. I don't want anything with adhesive. They tend to melt in the sun. Happened before and I don't want to have to clean that mess again. The screws are holding tight and I have no reason to change it.
Hi. That external speaker sounds kind of awful? Like from a cheapo speaker, and it's MFJ!! Well, I guess the speaker is the same one for various brands. But I thought it would sound better. Nethertheless thumbs up as always, you're doing a great job!
Well.....how well could you do if you didn't tell the world via the Internet when and what frequency you'd be at??? Could you have achieved zenith master sucess if you just picked a open frequency and just started calling?
Little salty are ya?? Uh, yes I can. If you'd pay attention you would notice that the first contact I got was before my spot even showed up on the website. After what? One CQ I think?? For the longest time I got on the air without spotting and had the same results by just calling CQ. Then, as the channel started to grow, people kept asking if I would please spot myself. They wanted to know when I was on the air so they could work me. Sounds silly, I know. But, since then I have made more of an effort to spot myself. Watch some of my earlier videos if you don't believe me. Not that I care one way or another of course.
@@hamradiotube salty, na......the sarcasm you didnt get. I guess since you don't know me, and my sence of humor your not used to.....the joke just went unnoticed....
So, are you logging with a smartphone app of some kind? I'm not liking the idea of having to haul a laptop with me. Maaaybe an iPad . . . Nevertheless, one of your best videos EVER!
Well thank you very much. I’m using an app called hamrs.app for logging. There’s also a new app called POLO that I really like too. apps.apple.com/us/app/ham2k-portable-logger/id6478713938 but it’s only on iOS right now and it’s still in development so you’ll need to download Test Flight from the App Store too.
Really? I thought I could expect more from you. You've been around the channel longer than that to know that for the longest time I never spotted myself. That's a low blow.
@@hamradiotube Not you, the hundreds that follow. It’s perfectly acceptable for POTA but a huge factor. The internet is a major component whether the activator knows it’s happening or not. Your “just calling CQ” but hunters are spotlighting your activation online.

I need to build a power box so I can start doing POTA, I'm blown away by how great your mobile rig does
Just connect the reds to the reds and the blacks to the blacks. Easy. I'm blown away by how well it works too.
I would have been SO disappointed if you hadn't sung the song.
Hahaha! It was stuck in my head all day.
Maybe…”🎶King of the POTA frontier 🎶“
Great video Mike
Thanks.
What app are you using on your phone to assist logging your contacts?
good morning Jaison you numero uno 73
I'll send him over 😆
@@hamradiotube good 👍 Job Mike jaison
I got a big tarheel amd cant get it to hold tune.
Im not sure if propogation is affecting my swr. I would think that it would not, as the swr depends on the impedance of the radiating element. But
Figured id give you a shot amd see if youve had any similar experience.
@@hamradiotube it is grounded to my receiver hitch. So the entire frame system is the ground.
Wow 311. Congratulations on the pile up.
That was quite the pile up, too! although, Mike gets 12db of gain for being a RUclipsr. 😀
It's not 12 dB. It's only like 6.
Thanks Andrew. It was a blast!
Fon video Mike and I think that new mount is legit, I may look into one for the SOTA Scion. 😎👍
It is super solid
Very cool pota video, thanks for sharing
Thanks for visiting
POTA and SOTAs are my coolest part of the HAM radio hobby. Outside of the city noise and interference, breathing fresh oxygen and playing radio. Priceless!
BTW, what apps are you using for logging your POTA contacts ?
hamrs.app
Mike, I have a Little Tarheel II also. What was the whip extension that you added?
Ah thanks for reminding me about that. I'm 99% sure it's this MFJ Whip. Also is a link to the quick disconnect I use. MFJ Antenna Whip: mfjenterprises.com/products/mfj-1964?_pos=23&_sid=c371cf9ad&_ss=r

@@hamradiotube thanks man, I appreciate it
For some reason my screwdriver antenna isn't loading up. But when it did, just driving in, parking and switching to the passenger seat was so easy.
Connection to ground?? That'd be the first place I would look.
Hey Mike! You should have stopped by the house on your way to Ratcliff! Anyway, nice video.
73, Calvin KI5OUP, Lovelady Texas
I did. I was pounding on the door and nobody came :). I really had to pee too.
@@hamradiotube great comeback!
Mike were you using an antenna tuner with the 891 on this activation?
No way. The Tarheel adjusts up and down to make it resonant. Kinda like a Wolf River Coils antenna but with a motor.
@@hamradiotube ok cool I will check out that antenna. Thanks.
Great video!!!! what logging app do you use?
www.hamrs.app
I need to finally order a LIDO mount! Great video, I always enjoy watching you setup and make contacts. What power were using?
Yes you do. I was running 90 watts.
Hey mike, ki5sxe, you make this look easy fun, love the videos! I'd lobe to hit a POTA with ya sometime. Get it? Lobe, whaka whaka. lol
It is easy. Just call cq. You say their callsign, they say yours, repeat. Don't over think it. I don't get the lobe part though. I don't know where you are but you got a 5 call. If you're ever in the area hit me up. I'd be happy to pota with you.
Pappa Pota strikes again
👍👍👍
Haha!
Did it split the 311 over two dates?
Yea unfortunately it did. That’s ok.
Man what a pile up!
It never stopped. I had to just leave.
Maybe all the ham pipes lead back to Davy Crockett St Park.

Nice video. Whats the app that you ussed?
www.hamrs.app
Damn, and I missed a late shift contact, but I'm in the log!
Thats all that matters
Hi Mike, are you still using HAMRs software for logging?
Yep
Mike, have you not considered industrial strength Velcro for attaching stuff to stuff instead of screws, nuts , and bolts.. .. KISS PRINCIPAL.. ..
No way. I've used velcro in the past and it melts in the heat. I don't want any adhesive at all.
I wish I could have nice things in my car. Up here in Portland that setup would be gone in five minutes.
I’m fixing to hit that thumbs up button..
Outstanding Mike! Envious. Enjoyed watching your reaction to Alaska contact. 73 NM5SP
I'm always amazed to get them. It never stops being exciting.
Awesome accomplishment! Loved the video, Hope to contact you on the air someday!
I hope so too!
Wow, nice mobile setup Mike! K5TGS
I have to thank Lido Radio for that.
hey Mike, I hope to get you as my first Park to park at one of the parks near me - K0018. I hope it will be this summer?
Oh you'll have to let me know when you go out. We can try to plan it.
You seem to be in a better mood. Care to elaborate?
I wish you watched the channel more, I would be in an even better mood haha. I talk about that here: ruclips.net/video/JT8yBROGlDA/видео.html
Hey Aligator Mikey (Crocodile Dundee)...how are things with ya?
Hey hey, things are good. How bout you?
@@hamradiotube All good here Mikey, HAM Life is just beautiful on every single day. Happy weekend buddy 💯🙋♂
Nice.............
Yessir
Get double stick squares from the hardware store to paste the spkr on top of controller. Easier and better than screws.....trust me
No way. I don't want anything with adhesive. They tend to melt in the sun. Happened before and I don't want to have to clean that mess again. The screws are holding tight and I have no reason to change it.
Like a boss!
That's how I roll.
That was awesome! I'm so glad Eric, KJ4YZI, turned me on to your channel oh so long ago. Kudos, brother!
Awesome! Thank you!
What is "spotting"
This: pota.app/#/
Hey Mike, I need get out and do some pota ans sota. N5WMS
I think that is the smartest thing you've said so far:)
Good lord!
Nice baritone voice, brother!
Well I sang bass in choir. This was an easy range.
@@hamradiotube same here
Hi. That external speaker sounds kind of awful? Like from a cheapo speaker, and it's MFJ!! Well, I guess the speaker is the same one for various brands. But I thought it would sound better. Nethertheless thumbs up as always, you're doing a great job!
Yes it does. It's not very good at all but its better than what I had.
Its not just calling CQ. Its mostly internet spotting.
