    Cannot thank you enough for this video, helped me to separate truck from trailer, not take to shop and fixed it myself!
    Once I found out trailer was ok by jumping connections, figured it was the truck, found out it was just the trailer 25 amp fuse that had blown.
    Should have just started at fuse box in engine bay instead of replacing 7 prong plugs on truck and trailer. But needed to be replaced anway.
    Once again, great instruction and saved me a lot of money!!

    This helped, thanks. As a tip to newby's not used to electrical stuff... I ran a standard car jumper cable from the 12v battery black (negative) pole to a ground point on my trailer (I used the ground wire from the breakaway battery). Then, I ran a wire (with a 15v volt fuse in the middle) from the red (positive) pole of the battery to the black (power) terminal on the 7-way plug. Then, I used a wire (no fuse necessary) from that power terminal to each of the other terminals to see what was lighting up on the trailer. In this way, I found that my trailer had the right, left, reverse, and marker wires mixed up. Thanks Guy.

    I love it. This was exactly the same question I had. Where does the power from the battery get connected into the trailer when it's outside of the 7 blade socket?

    Thank you very much for a good explanation. I have been chasing down a trailer brake bug, and couldn't figure out if it was the truck side, or the trailer side. This helped me test the trailer in isolation, and I was able to find a bad power connection going to one of the trailer brakes. Fixed up, thank you so much.

    Thank you again, very easy to understand a direct to the point. I ate it that the battery that is hooked to the trailer has electric brakes which is the same battery that applies the brakes in case of the break way is activated. That is the only thing you should clarify. Art

    @Viol3ntSolution .. Usually the power pin of the plug (the thin black wire) goes straight to the thick black wire at the battery and acts as a trickle charger wire when on the road and plugged into the tow vehicle. So yes, the thick black wire on the trailer and the thin black wire of the plug are connected together. That is where the power comes from. Does this answer your question????

    Thank you very much. you got me out of trouble! my step father accused me of not wiring his cargo trailer correctly. (He was mad) Right side would not blink or brake. Had running light on that side. I told him I wanted to test his truck connection and he told me he just had it tested and it was good. He got offended when I told him I wanted to test it before condemning my trailer wiring. Upon testing it, the green wire connection failed the test. Test light with him watching. (right blinker and brake) He proceeded to eat crow. 😉
    All this after I had him cancel his appt. with a company to wire it. I told him I would save him a few hundred.

      There's nothing like a little technical know-how to solve a minor electrical problem. That your father in law saw his error, and admitted to it, to his son in law of all persons, makes him a very, very smart man. That's right, being able to see your own mistakes and learn from them is sign of much intelligence. Looks good on you for having spotted the error in the wiring. Cheers!

    This advice was awesome. So I have a unique case. First, I got a 7-pin tester for my pick-up and it clearly shows my trailer brakes don't work (or are intermittent). Great, I'll have the dealership fix that. But when trying to confirm the brakes worked on my 5th wheel I had an odd situation. While I was able to confirm that the turn signals and trim lights work using the wire but when I tried to do the brake the 15-amp fuse on my wire blew. I swapped it out and tried again and that blew as well. I happened to check my pickup (2017 2500 Deisel) and the fuse for the brakes are 30-amp. I swapped the fuse for a 30-amp and tried and I don't see anything. I see a spark occasionally but the brake lights don't come on.
    What could cause this? Is it possible that not only is my trailer brake system on the truck needs service but the camper itself may have a short of some sort with the brakes?

    I have two fully charged 6 volt batteries on my travel trailer. The Red wire from the trailer is attached to the Positive terminal on battery #1. The White ground wire is attached to the trailer frame and to the negative terminal on battery #2. I have a wire attached to the Negative on battery #1, and attached to the Positive on battery #2. They both have a full charge. I am trying to match the wiring on the truck side of a 7 way connector to the travel trailer. After watching your video a couple of times, I believe you are showing how to test the trailer side. I have a testing light and a piece of wire with a 15 amp fuse. Both ends of the wire have been stripped. If I follow your video, I attach the test light to a clean (unpainted) area on the trailer. I take the pointed end of the test light, and slide it into the trailer side plug. I am getting nothing. No light, nothing. I took the wire and slide it into the top left pin hole and inserted the other end into each of the other pins (avoiding the ground slot). Nothing, no power no lights on the trailer. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you for sharing this information.

    Great video, one quick question. On my 2013 RAM 1500 I'm using my 7 pin plug to power (2) 37 watt aux led lights. I have it hooked up to the reverse pin & neutral and when I put the truck into reverse the lights come on, however, my factory backup camera display now has vertical lines. Ralph Webber Webber Some new vehicles need a special booster pack in order to not confuse the cars onboard computer when connecting to a trailer. I'm guessing if the wires are there, it's ready to be used. You'll have to disconnect when parked for the night otherwise it will drain your truck battery.

    I don't see why not. You'll want to positively identify what each wire is for before you begin, but I don't see a problem there. Make sure you know which one is the ground wire, if there is a hot going to the battery, which one does the electric brakes etc. Good luck my friend.

  • @kylelassiter1044
    @kylelassiter1044 10 лет назад

    Thank you. But one thing you don't explain, unless I missed it, is how do you hook the battery up to the trailer. Also, how come you can't use the 12 volt tester to test the light to see if they are on? thanks and thanks for the video.

    • @GuyPresse
      @GuyPresse  10 лет назад

      Kyle Lassiter There is usually a black (positive) and white (negative) or red (positive) and black (negative) coming from the trailer that you attach to the battery. Your second question, if I understand correctly, a twelve volt tester to test would make a series circuit with the lights and the lights wouldn't come because the tester has high resistance and so would cause a high voltage drop. Try it! The fused wired sends power to the lights from the hot wire and lights them, the tester won't because it has too high a resistance, like someone kinking a water hose and not letting the water out.

    • @GuyPresse
      @GuyPresse  9 лет назад

      m00nchildblues If the seven pin works properly, then I suspect the 4 pin is not connected properly, poor connections really. Fuse would have nothing to do with your problem unless it is burnt out of course. Let me know what you find and how you resolve this problem. Cheers and good luck.

    Thanks for video Guy, but how do you hook up the battery to the piece of wire with the fuse? Could you explain how to do this please? Thank you.

    • @GuyPresse
      @GuyPresse  9 лет назад +1

      Kevin Colson Hi Kevin. No need to connect anything to that piece of wire. That piece of wire is fused as a protective mechanism in case you accidentally short it out. The video assumes that you have a properly connected battery on your travel trailer. If your battery is properly connected then the power side of the plug (top left) is hot with 12 volts, and using the wire, you then send power and activate marker lights, or brakes, or signal lights etc. Good luck with that. Be sure to let me know how it all works out for you. Cheers!

    Just bought a trailer and it has a 7 pin blade connector as does my truck. The turn lights, brake lights work but when I turn on my truck lights only one running light on the trailer works. Went to change out the plug and noticed the trailer wire only has 6 actual wires, the seventh wire is white and is stamped as a "filler" wire, so not actually a wire. The plug only had 5 of the 6 available wires hooked up so trying to use any standard diagrams is a little confusing. The wire has a blue, black, brown, red, yellow and green. I'm not even sure where to start, any suggestions, thanks

    • @GuyPresse
      @GuyPresse  7 лет назад

      Good news if you have one running light working, means the running pin on the truck is good. Make sure the pins have a good contact. Sounds to me like you have a wired severed on the running light circuit. On the running light that is good, that is likely the first one in the circuit, there is a wire connected to it that goes to the second light and so on. I'm guessing the wire going to the second light is faulty, so pull out that first running light and check them wires. Good luck and let me know how you make out.
      The color of the wires, other that white (ground) and black (hot) doesn't mean too much. It is the location of the wire on the plug that matters and follows a sort of universal trailer wiring convention.

      You would need a battery on your trailer if you have electric brakes for the safety switch that would activate your brakes if your trailer broke loose from your tow vehicle. I just installed electric brakes on my boat trailer but I haven't tested them yet. Hopefully it will make a noticeable difference in braking.

  • @DazSpaz47

    Hi. Just wondering what the trailer has to have a battery? I understand for teating purposes but I always thought that the TOW vehicle supplied power to the trailer for lights, brakes and charging the trailers Rv house batteries. Theoretically you should be able to TOW with full trailer function with no Rv trailer batteries on board no?Thank you ahead. Daz

    • @GuyPresse
      @GuyPresse  8 лет назад

      +private You're quite right, the battery in this video is just for testing purposes. I think the cut-away switch and emergency electric brakes on travel trailers (in case the trailer comes unhitched on the road) are connected to the battery on board, but you may want to double check on this. Let me know what you find out, I just forget for sure. I've seen trailers with smaller batteries for this purpose, and I think it was on the utility trailers. Cheers bro!

      +Guy Presse thanks for the quick reply. That makes sense for sure. I was just wondering because in a comment with another fellow you guys discussed the Rv (trailer) battery being low and causing problems. I have a 2000 avion Fifth triple slide and the last time i moved it the tow vehicle reverse lights would come on and the brakes on the fifth who'd lock up. I ended up having to tow the last 5km via hitch only and no trailer brakes which made for a very cautious and slow trek. I'm pretty sure the issue is due the tow vehicle wiring and not my trailer as the wiring in my trailer has not been altered since the last time it was towed, and this tow vehicle is new to me. All that blathering being said, any chance you could shed some light possibly on that particular problem? Thanks again. Good video and an awesome DIY to test your trailer wiring. Clever.

      +private I have another video on how to test the tow vehicle 7 pin plug (ruclips.net/video/D7uw1Jv1stc/видео.html), that might help you pinpoint the problem. It is common enough that the wiring sometimes shorts and causes issues. Let me know how it turns out for you.

      I think his diagram has neutral and break reversed...so that would explain why it blew. But I am not an expert just basing off of my research of other diagrams

    why are the two diagrams for the 7 pin different. the power,break, neutral, and marker are in different locations.

      Gary P If you cut something in half and look at each half, one is the mirror image of the other. Ans so it is with the truck and trailer ends of the plug. I think that is your question?

    You'd have to install a seven pin plug on vehicle and trailer and bring a fused wire from the battery of the tow vehicle to the 7 pin plug. The corresponding battery wire on the trailer goes straight to the battery or preferably attaches to the positive cable going to the battery (sometimes in junction box under the trailer), that way it gets power from the converter also to charge the battery. Cheers, have fun, and good luck with that.

    I dont see how this wold work. Are you running the power and ground from female plug to the male plug THEN using a jumper wire? How can you run 1 jumper if its not plugged in, how can you run a jumper if it is plugged in. Looks good on paper, show real word live example.

    • @charlesbentley2934
      @charlesbentley2934 4 года назад

      The trailer is unhooked but has a battery installed! Battery is used for the emergency brake in case the trailer detaches when traveling. All do not have a battery. He says must have a battery. Another way is to ground the trailer to the vehicle then make a jump from the vehicle plug (power feed) to the different ports he showed. Still, do not jump to the ground or the vehicle fuse will blow.

    Ok. You are testing the plug of the trailer, not the receptacle of the towing vehicle. I wish you could show that too.

  • @rayfox5040

    Most trailer manufacturers use whatever scraps of wire they have in the smallest gauge possible and no specific colors to cut costs. It makes following wires from the front to the rear almost impossible. I'm sure everyone would pay an extra $50 to have a better wiring job done before the trailer is sold new. Mine is 6 wire from the front to the brake area, where it goes into a household junction box haha. From there it goes to 4 wire to the back where it is connected directly to the lights. The power wire for each used a marette with many connecting wires and the grounds were each screwed to the frame and most of them rusted off within 5 years. The places the lights were installed held water and there was much corrosion in all of them. And we put up with this why?

    How are you going to test a plug with no power in it. It's just a dead plug. The power to the plug comes from the truck not the battery in the camper.

      Guy, Your video is excellent. I am going to replace my battery on the trailer as I now know it is weak, so I am guessing the testing I did on the trailer plug failed because of the weak battery. Is this a fair assumption?

      Next question... The 10 Amp fuse for the trailer wiring on my RAV4 blows every now and then when I attach the trailer (not always). Could having a weak battery be a reason to cause the short? Clearly I am replacing the battery on the trailer and will conduct the trailer test again to see if there is a circuit issue but I am concerned why only sometimes does the fuse blow when I connect the trailer. Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

    • @GuyPresse
      @GuyPresse  9 лет назад

      Rod Pennington Yes, I think a bad battery on the trailer could cause that, but most likely an intermittent short on the trailer wiring is the culprit. Intermittent problems are a real pain to find and fix. Best of luck with that. Be sure to let me know what you discover and how you fixed the prob. Cheers!
