I started play pickle ball 15 year ago ,there is so much different in the game right now as it progressed , much faster than tennis ,the new and younger totally change the game
@Pickleball Playbook, at 00:52 in your referral video, it’s not from Japan. It’s a game that took place in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The two guys on the near side are Vietnamese.
I'm impressed you said mental is 80% of the game. So true, I feel like I'm losing to players I'm technically better because of the mental aspect. Freezing up, going down that worry spiral.
I have a few friends who played pickleball for a few years now. I don’t play myself but from what I gather from talking with them is that pickleball went from “well it’s not like tennis at all where you hit the ball hard” to “I now have a great fast topspin serve and it feels great”. As an outsider it looks like pickleball inevitably will become a form of mini Tennis depending on how far the regulations will allow the paddles to be upgraded. Modern tennis became modern tennis with the advent of carbon fibre racquets and synthetic strings to improve the spin you can get onto the ball
It’s headed in the direction of tennis but with much more finesse and touch. Being able to take a hard ball and drop it into the kitchen easily, being able to drop a ball from the baseline into a precise spot into the kitchen every point.
The game is literally changing by the month ,three months ago I was winning most of my games dropping, reset, dinks, now I'm being overpowered with these new paddles
Agree 100%! With power and accuracy, shots like drips and baseline/mid court attacking shots will increase. Shaped attacking dinks will also take over, especially with newer tech. Thus the need for 2 handed backhands and the ability to use different grips. More extreme grips will increase, which brings more spin, power, accuracy.
You referenced Japanese PB being influenced by table tennis paddle skills - could you do a deeper dive on this. Also, badminton players and strategy seem to be influencing PB. I am always look for more on strategy and point construction.
As a badminton player and now pickleball player I would say that there are a definitely skills from badminton that transfer and are very useful in pickleball. Hand battle speed and generally playing shots around the kitchen from slightly odd positions around your body are definitely something that you do all the time in badminton but which the tennis players are very much less used to. The only shot I think the badminton players truly have a big advantage with is the overheads. The amount of smashing in badminton means that they should be very good at getting on any even slightly loose lifts or lobs and they are likely hitting it back down very effectively.
I played a fair amount of table tennis in high school and (like any person with racquet or paddle experience) tried to translate some of those skills to pickleball. My experiences have resulted in sharing the following tips: 1. Good table tennis players know how to and will utilize the split step. It keeps you balanced and in control when placing shots. 2. Hand-eye coordination is key. It develops an instinct to react to the moving ball. If you don’t, practice these types of drills to help develop your reflexes an touch sensitivity. 3. As with table tennis, the wrist is NOT the key to make you a potent shot maker. It "window dressing". Work on the fundamentals first. It is way more beneficial to learn how to execute technique with a locked/fixed wrist and THEN add wrist (to your liking) after you've developed that skill rather than experiment with wristy shots at the onset. Developing confidence with control, touch and shot accuracy is easier and more useful than adding the variability with a moving wrist. Fact: the slightest change in wrist motion introduces more inaccuracies than any other join in the arm. 4. Go for pace over spin. Spin can be hard to decipher and return. So, it important good to have it in your toolkit ... but if you ever watch good players, they win more points off pace, compared to spin. 5. If you introduce spin on your serves or returns, make top and side spin a priority. They are less costly than slice/backspin. 6. Drill.
The video you showed at 1:00, I believe is in Vietnam, not Japan. I haven't seen any pickleball craze or growth in Japan but the opposite in Vietnam. OB Pickleball. Quang Duong was just there
On a somewhat related note, are there Pickleball places in Japan? I was there last month and was hoping to find at least one place but I could not find a single store or place related to Pickleball. Also its awesome that its picking up so much worldwide. Id love to play when we travel abroad in the future.
It might be like the UK, there may not be many specific pickleball facilities, but badminton is definitely a popular sport there, so all the many many sports halls that have badminton courts marked will be suitable for pickleball (which is essentially played on a badminton court).
Been playing doubles tennis competitively for decades. This is old stuff to tennis players. Power and finesse have been part of tennis for a very long time. Technique will also evolve from a pickleball perspective. Such as more kinds of “flicking” the paddle. I even think the stacking thing will move to a majority simply doing hand signals. Along with forehands to the middle. That will evolve. I’m a lefty and don’t care if I play the right or left of the court. My backhand should be near or equally as deadly as my forehand. That’s just doubles.
Recreational pickleball is more fun to play and watch. It is not the constant dink around at the net but with more full court play . The serve is competitive and strategic. This is how the majority of recreational players play as it is more fun.
The game footage of Willy was in Vietnam. If the tournament in Japan is PJF tournament (where Ignatowitch showed up) then Willy wasn’t there, so he isn’t the Taiwan player mentioned. Either that or the ref confused Japan and Vietnam.
With the increase in offensive firepower, I think that resetting balls into the kitchen (when back in the transition zone) and reset dinking will be even more important (to avoid giving the opponents put away opportunites.
Asian and South American countries like. Peru, China, India, Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia etc. just like their domination in the small court games ( cricket, table tennis, badminton, squash). Pickleball and Paddleball are sports that suit their size. Watch this, it will happen.
“The game has changed” I guess, but it’s more like old players hit bad dinks that other old players didn’t punish Pickleball players weren’t good before and now they are The game has improved
The funnest part of pickleball for me is to have long drawn out points with women, but but not obviously looking like you're playing down. The positive feedback I get from that is quiet nice.
BECAUSE the game has changed to a much faster pace & more aggressive, it is no longer fun playing. Ive always enjoyed the long rallies, but when the point is over after 2-3 shots, repeatedly, its just frustrating, not fun. I'm losing my passion for the game. Im an older player & have such a difficult time with all the spins
Yeah very similar. I felt that my last one didn’t dive deep enough into all the things that need to be focused on. The last one was more about the shift of fast passed pickleball, this one was more about the actionable steps each of us need to take in order to win this upcoming year. I hope you enjoyed it 😊
This is a great video and has some truth to it. But it’s mostly just copium coming from an inexperienced perspective. I noticed you referenced how pickleball has changed but you only went back a couple of years at most. This change is nothing new. When I started, ALW and her mom were making their way up the ladder and killing everyone by powering through them. Players had to adjust and we began to see a lot more “stand your ground” firefights at the pro level. But players eventually adjusted to that and became more precise; they were able to dodge more out balls. Now, “stand your ground” firefights are an intermediate skill. Just a few years ago, there was a growing trend of “Hammering” at the kitchen line that we still see in the higher intermediate levels. Now, firefights have become more precise and strategic at the pro level. Looking for the tiniest opening to speed up, and attacking the counter. Like MMA mixed with chess and it looks amazing in person. But it’s still just a growing trend of what came before. Speedups are still just fast dinks and can easily be reset once you know your opponent’s tendencies. Eventually the game will slow down again as defensive players become more precise and adjust their timing accordingly.
You make some good points. This video was meant to highlight a few key areas where the game is evolving, but the history of pickleball is definitely a lot more dynamic than I covered.
As a rec player I used to never dink but now I'm at the level where I can't overpower my opponents anymore. Their reaction speed and ability to reset made me understand the importance of drinks and resets. Against less experienced players I can constantly drive and speed up to win but now picking and choosing when to speed up has provided me with better results.
I agree. I think some folks think that because there has been a big increase on offensively attacking the thirds, so it creates a different dynamic on what one will do on the fourth and fifth.
Why nobody talk about singles games? Almost no one wants to play pickleball singles since its exhausting also watching is not enjoyable. there are just 3-4 shots even in PPA. Skinny singles is not solution because it feels like an one person doubles game. Both badminton and tennis play doubles and singles in different sizes. if game has changed so we need a new singles dimensions. I feel like only solution for this is downsizing the dimensions for pickleball singles to badminton court size. I would love to see singles game in 17 feet court. or 16 feet like Touch Tennis has. What do you think about this?

Wow, its cool to see it from someone who has been around for so long! thanks for the testimony

There’s no footage from the JPF Japan tournament. This is another tournament in Vietnam 👍
Best PB channel, good job.
Hey I appreciate that! Thanks Larry :)
I'm impressed you said mental is 80% of the game. So true, I feel like I'm losing to players I'm technically better because of the mental aspect. Freezing up, going down that worry spiral.
It’s crazy that some people don’t think this. If you have a bad mental game, you can’t possibly win
I have a few friends who played pickleball for a few years now. I don’t play myself but from what I gather from talking with them is that pickleball went from “well it’s not like tennis at all where you hit the ball hard” to “I now have a great fast topspin serve and it feels great”.

@ agree! You definetly need more touch in pickleball
The game is literally changing by the month ,three months ago I was winning most of my games dropping, reset, dinks, now I'm being overpowered with these new paddles
I'm sure they'll sell you one too 😂
Yeah it’s so true! Always new exciting ways to improve
This is such awesome info! Thanks 👍🏼👍🏼
Glad you liked it! Let me know what you want to see next! 👍🏼
I just ordered the book. Hope you get a %. Thanks.
Excellent video. 👍👍
Appreciate the support! Hopefully, the book helps you smash some aces!
Excellent, as usual.
Gotta practice.
Dang straight!!

Exactly! I didn’t touch on grips, but you bring up a great point. Will definitely be interesting 🎉
Have you released a video on how to execute #8 - countering with a 2-hand backhand?
I haven’t, but this is a good idea for future videos 🔥
Once the serves becomes a “weapon,” a rule change will come to slow down the serve…as it has many times already.
Good points. We will have to see what happens!
You got it! I really want to improve on my Pickleball game. Thanks for sharing!
You can do it!
Great content! 100% correct.

They don’t have film from the Japan tournament my friend. I was just showing pro Willy Chung who’s a top player in Asia. Hope that helps!

All that tournaments were held in Vietnam recently. Not Japan.
Quang Duong and his father and PPA crew also came there.
No the JPF tournament was the 12th through the 15th. There’s no footage of it though 👍
Dinking is practicing weakness. Bang, spin and win!
True! Offensive dinking is great though

PB is mini tennis.
Similar!
No more tennis. No more drinking.
Love it!
1:00 Vietnam not Japan

Asian and South American countries like. Peru, China, India, Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia etc. just like their domination in the small court games ( cricket, table tennis, badminton, squash). Pickleball and Paddleball are sports that suit their size. Watch this, it will happen.
Exactly! It’s going to be a crazy year from all around the world. Pickleball like we have never seen before
Don’t forget about Europe a lot of people going from paddle to pickleball now
The only reason they are dominant in those sports is because in the USA there isn't much interest in them. Just like Soccer. No one really cares.
Great point! So much going on there too
Pickleball is the mma of racket sport.
Heck yeah!
Like the hat
Thank you!

It can be tough to adapt to the faster pace. Focusing on following through your shots and not pushing is essential

I've been playing pb for 1.5 years. I see zero dinking. Literally, nobody in rec games dink.
Def not playing at a high enough level then lol. Anyone 3.5 and above should be dinking if even a little
As a rec player I used to never dink but now I'm at the level where I can't overpower my opponents anymore. That means the people you play with suck
Yeah level is everything. Dinking doesn’t start until 4.0 ish and usually doesn’t become very good until 5.0
Higher levels dink because they know how to defend drives and don’t pop up very often
I don't think dinking is dead. I think it is just turning into a more offensive strategy or a last resort.
Exactly! Dead dinking is close to dead, but not offensive and neutral dinking. You’re exactly right
I agree. I think some folks think that because there has been a big increase on offensively attacking the thirds, so it creates a different dynamic on what one will do on the fourth and fifth.
You dont have to beat Ben cuz your never gonna play em. Dream on. I always shutter when I see a backyard court, not in my neighborhood.
I bet you have a lot of fun playing in your neighborhood!
Imagine living next to u...that pickleball noise!!! Yikes!!!
did you really comment on an informative pickleball video to just say something as useless as that?
😂 glad you don’t live by me
Vietnam is not Japan!
😂 of course not. These are just clips of a player named Willy Chung. There aren’t any clips from the Japan tournament
Boring. Nobody is gonna watch such a lame game (the new style).
I think it’s way more fun to watch personally!
Nothing new.
I love your profile picture 😂

I feel like only solution for this is downsizing the dimensions for pickleball singles to badminton court size.
I would love to see singles game in 17 feet court. or 16 feet like Touch Tennis has.
What do you think about this?
Yeah that’s exactly why. It’s much harder for everyone to play. Singles isn’t as popular so it’s not talked about as much…yet!
@ thats why we need a change!
if we play singles on skinner court like 16feet
what would it look like?
