I remember my grandma talking about sneaking out of her house to Snow White at the cinema. She really loved that movie because it was the first one she ever saw at a movie theater.
That was my dad's first movie as well. He was six so didn't have to sneak out. But he had to wear a suit that he was not thrilled about! We still have the souvenir puzzle he got.
The first Snow White doll is made of composition, which is a mixture of sawdust and glue mainly. Her hair isn't plastic; that kind of plastic didn't really exist in toys, yet at that time. It's just sculpted as part of her head from the composition material and painted. I like her face and I find it indicative of the kind of stylized cartoon and doll faces of the era which had a certain babiness to them even in older characters, think Betty Boop, which I find cute.
The first Snow White doll looks like they also wanted to copy a popular line of dolls called Fairytale dolls the difference is Snow White has molded hair and the Fairytale dolls have mo hair wigs. But the face paint on both dolls is very similar.
(Copying this from another reply I made): I like it because it actually looks like a child (and she’s literally 14). Despite Beauty Inside A Box disliking it for that reason, that’s honestly why I prefer it so much and why I feel so disconnected from the later iterations of her. The face is very accurate in my opinion, though her body does look a bit like a toddler’s (which is explained in the video).

Actually interestingly enough she used to be part of the Disney Princess line. In 2004 she was cut from it since her merchandise sales were too low. Disney also decided she was a little too much of a mature contect character for the line.
I don't know about the other "artistic liberties", but Snow White wore brown/orange and yellow in the first products released because that was the original color of her dress. Disney decided to change everything at the last minute. The head bow that was blue became red and the bodice that was orange became blue with red accents! Much better I have to say.
When it comes to sleeping beauty, I believe that blue color of her dress is caused by the thing that pink became "women" colour around fifties. Before the blue one was more commonly described as a "girly" colour, was considered as delicate and symbolised purity, while pink was considered as different tone of red, so power, "menly" stuffs etc. c;
Not quite. There really wasn't a codified gender + color association until the mid-20th century, in either direction. you see some earlier sources making recommendations (some for girls in pink and boys in blue; some vice versa as you suggest), but generally speaking, there wasn't a set idea of Boy Colors and Girl Colors the way there is today. Then advertisers started jumping into the fray, hoping to sell parents more clothing by making it impossible for different-gendered siblings to share, and the current pattern is just what came out on top. There's no real reason why, as far as I can tell from reliable extant sources.
I love that in recent years they've started making the dolls genuinely look like the characters rather than just dressing a very Barbie like character up as the princesses
god that mattel rapunzel with the hair extensions is GORGEOUS! i still think companies struggle to produce a movie-accurate face mold without her looking like this 😳 in the eyes lol, but wow i love that they made it almost more barbie like! its so cute
I think it's a little unfair to complain that the Madame Alexander dolls don't look like the princesses. If I remember correctly, Madame Alexander had a certain number of face molds and would always use the descriptor "as" rather than naming the doll directly. For example, you would have Madame Alexander as "Cinderella" or Madame Alexander as "Dorothy" (Wizard of Oz) so it was more that they were dressing a doll up like another character rather than that doll actually "being" the character. I never collected Madame Alexander though, so I could be wrong.
@@DylanRomanov I had SO many wicked witches and basic Dorothys! I wanted to collect them all, and it took me so long to get the Dorothy with the super sparkly shoes. I believe it also had a yellow apron or something as well. I can't seem to find it when I look them up, so it must be rare.
@@DylanRomanov Yes!! Out of that set I only had Glinda, but I also had a Cruella, 2 Princess Jasmines and a lot of non-character MA dolls. My sweet grandma would give them to me and my sisters.
Embroider Art, you are absolutely right about this. Throughout Madame Alexander Doll Co.'s long history, they only had a small number of face molds at any given time and each face mold had a name. like Maggie, Cissy, Cisette, Mary Ann, etc. New face molds were created over the years to keep up with current doll trends and certain face molds were then retired. They frequently made dolls from popular fairy tales & movies as well as historic figures but they were made with the same limited set of face molds. For instance the later (60s & beyond) their little 8" dolls usually had the Wendy or Maggie face mold.
I adore the older Disney dolls and I love the Madame Alexander Cinderella and I think that the prince looks very sweet. . My late Grandad actually saw Snow White in the Cinema as a young child. I adore the history of dolls in general.
I always loved the original Disney Store Anna and Elsa dolls, mainly because their eyes were painted so that they are looking at each other when together.
1:10 This doll is so cute though! They don't make her chubby anymore now :/ 5:22 This doll doesn't look like Aurora _at all_ but I think she's absolutely stunning. Beautiful dress.
The reason the original Tyco Ariel doll had strawberry blonde hair was because at the time of its release, Disney was told that children don’t like red headed dolls and they wouldn’t sell. It was soon changed to Ariel’s signature bright red hair.
I still have that Belle doll. Yours is in much better condition, but agree completely with her design. Always loved the little sparkle they put in their eyes.
I have the Jasmine second hand out of box. I absolutely love the fabric of her outfits, so soft. What’s fun is the “beach” version of her has Purple earring instead of gold!
It’s very interesting to see how the dolls have changed over time! I wonder if Disney will ever remake the older dolls (such as the ones from the 1950’s-1960’s) and sell them as collectors items! Similar to how Barbie would remake older dolls as collector items.
In case some of you are wondering why Snow whites dresses are different colors than the film it’s because before the movie was released they repainted her dress out of preference even though merchandise for the film was already set.
The first Snow White doll is so cute, in a classic sort of way! Cinderella too, her dress is beautiful. I wish we could still get antique dolls of the Disney Princesses, maybe as high quality collector’s items?
Honestly I rarely like dolls that aren't Disney store made... I bought the hasbro Moana at some point just because I couldn't afford the Disney store one at the time and repainted her face, it turned out ok, but the outfit and lack of articulation just kept bothering me until I bought the Disney store one.
I simply loved the dolls of the classic movies!! Snow White's dress is not that bizarre, it actually looks like the first dress she wears on the movie.
This is so nostalgic, my fav doll as a kid was the Hercules Megara doll in a short blue/green dress. She was everything I wanted to be growing up and so different to other Disney females. Pocahontas was also a fav. I remember my Ariel doll, was so sad when the Sebastian and flounder print on her tail started to peel. I loved changing her into her pink dress. I believe there was an Esmeralda doll also, absolutely stunning.
now that the rights return to Mattel I don't expect so much from the play line editions but I do expect a lot from the collector's editions, I just hope they don't disappoint me 🤨
Fascinating seeing how much better the Disney Store dolls are compared to the other versions. Aww you didn't include some of my favs Jane, Esmeralda and Megara. I guess your video would have been ridiculously long though.
Oh wow, those Tyco Ariel dolls are giving me so much nostalgia! I was born in 1989 and The Little Mermaid was my favourite film for a long time, so I had a load of Ariel dolls with different outfits and tail patterns and things, including the giant one that sang. I loved them! I had Pocahontas too. I swear, if I had the space and money for a proper doll collection, I'd buy so many of those Disney Store ones. I love the Merida.
Such a cool idea for the video! Also, Sleeping Beauty does have a cape for the portion of the movie when the faries are leading her to the palace. Different colour than the one on a doll and with a hood. Mattel Jasmine and Pocahontas are stunning!
I had the Jasmine doll when I was really little, it was one of my favorite toys until her head came off due to a factory defect. When I was a teen I discovered that my dad still had the head and put it on the end of a pencil, and had been using it for years as a decoration on his office desk.
I had the Pocahontas doll, and absolutely LOVED her hair. Most of the time playing with that doll was just making her flip her hair in other doll's faces.
I never knew the difference between Disney store dolls and regular shop dolls because I didn’t go to a Disney store until 2010 when one opened in Dublin. Unfortunately by that point I didn’t have any dolls anymore and wasn’t really interested. One of my first Disney dolls would have been mulan, and I would have gotten it around the late 90s. I don’t think it was the same as the one shown in this video, but it was similar.
My sister (funnily enough you two are the same age) and I had those Pocahontas and Mulan matchmaker dolls-we adored them! This was a really informative video. Have you considered doing a similar video for non-Princess Disney heroines: Wendy, Alice, Megara, etc?
I also think that Pocahontas (Mattel) is the most beautiful one. High quality and gorgeous face. Esmeralda from Mattel (no princess) is gorgeous as well, probably my second favorite
Sleeping beauty was originally marketed in blue because before they started mass producing dolls Cinderella was marketed as wearing a silvery white dress. However when they started mass making dolls later on they changed Cinderella's marketing to a blue dress so as to not make it resemble a wedding dress. Due to this change they ended up changing Sleeping Beauty's dress to pink to distinguish her from Cinderella
I think the reason that tyco's ariel was the last childlike doll was because of the wedding sets. Tyco's eric was ken sized and they packaged them together in their wedding clothes. Looks like ariel is a child bride to a grown man and it is suuuuuuuper creepy
Back in the 90's when MATTEL was still producing movie accurate Barbies with better hair quality that doesn't get matted/tangled from braiding and styling.
From what I understand of Disney early merchandise they were either made to promote it or very after the movie prove to be success. So for Snow I wouldn’t be surprise if they just work off some of her early art work.
I had that Ariel doll as a kid! The only thing that remains from her is that sleeping bag tail of hers. I remember trying to have my Barbies wear it, but their legs were too long.
I love the 90’s dolls 😊 I recently purchased the 2021 Holiday Rapunzel from the Disney store and the quality is amazing! I love her so much 💕 She was on sale for around $20.
I’ve always thought my rapunzel looked a lot different from the ones I’ve seen now, but you’ve pointed out that I’ve apparently got the original Mattel doll. I think the hair extensions and shoes have been lost to the ages, the dressed is ripped at the inner skirt, and I’ve had to take care of her hair a lot, but she’s apparently the original Rapunzel Mattel.
So fun fact actually when making Pocahontas Dolls Mattel would reuse some Head Molds from one of the older Princess Jasmine Dolls and make the Pocahontas accessories and clothes and take pictures with the Jasmine doll as Prototype Dolls so in some of the Older Pocahontas Catalogs you can see some of the Pocahontas dolls might have a Jasmine head mold that had been alter a bit for the prototype, I think they did it for her friend Nakoma too cuz they made a doll of her too but yeah In the prototype time you can kinda see it.
Madame Alexander Co. never tried to replicate the Disney characters. They did their own designs with their own face and body sculpts. They did hundreds of fairy tale, storybook, historical, and fantasy dolls with exquisite costumes. Very high quality dolls!
I remember when the movie came out, you could NOT find Frozen dolls for Months! No store could keep them in stocks, always sold out online. Only the ugly ones were available if you could find them😂
The Mattel Rapunzel doll is what made me start collecting the princess dolls (besides the ones I played with as a kid). I then started getting Disney Store dolls.
I had that 2nd release Tyco Ariel doll and the Jasmine doll you showed. I remember loving Jasmine’s outfits and her hair. My mother hated Jasmine’s outfit and kept making me put Barbie sweaters on her to “cover her up”. Now I kinda want to buy a 90s Jasmine doll just to display her on a shelf in her teal green outfit.
This video was an absolute joy. I collected all of these and still have them. Everything you said about the classic ‘90’s versions was spot on… sparkles on the clothes and in the eyes. I can remember those details so clearly. Both Jasmine’s and Pocahontas’s silky, jet black hair was so magical. I also loved how those dolls mostly came with a 2nd outfit and mini golden book. Priceless.
Sleeping Beauty is 1959 (not 1960), The Princess & the Frog is 2009 (not 2008), and Frozen is 2013 (not 2014). Hope this helps if you need to reference these dates in future videos!
The first Elsa doll was always a little creepy! I think its because they made the face sculpt while Elsa was still a villain and then the story changed and they had to quickly cover her up to look more like the final version of Elsa.
I was lucky enough to have the original Ariel (resculpted face), Belle, Jasmine and Aladdin dolls. I wore those out and my daughter now plays with the clothes for her Barbies. Thanks for the trek down memory lane.
Also Mirabel actually isn’t a Princess, but I love her Disney Store musical doll even if she isn’t in my top dolls since her face isn’t as good as others to me lol.
The Snow White doll looks a lot like the Patsy doll by Effanbee! It's the 30s hair and the proportions, of course, but also the face and the arms, one of which is straight and one, at an angle.
For aurora she wears blue throughout most of her screen time with that dress which is why the doll was in a blue dress. The movie came out in 1959. She does wear a different cape in the movie. Also sleeping beauty didn’t make its money back but that’s only because they went over budget. The movie was still pretty popular.
It’s awesome that you had dolls growing up ❤️ I grew up in a low income household, and I had very few dolls. I was still grateful for them, but now that I have a job I want to grow my doll collection 💛💛💛
I had the Disney merida doll (among a bunch of the other Disney princess dolls) but she was my favourite girl ever. I loved her cape and bow so much, I took her everywhere with me and would rub the cape on my face because of how nice it felt
My sisters and I had the Original Pocahontas Doll at home, I think! Such a Nostalgia Flashback, no idea were she is :( Such toy stuff was usually shared in the wider family
I had the Tiana doll at 13:51 and the Merida doll at 17:28 as a kid (I'm 16 now and no longer have them or any of my other dolls, but I love seeing the ones I had as a kid in the late 2000s/early 2010s and getting that rush of nostalgia. Wish I had been around in the 90s when the Disney dolls were at their prime tho) The ones that I did have tho, I loved. They included, if I remember correctly: 1. A Snow White Mattel doll from the 2000s, with a sparkly dress that included an ombre skirt, as well as a gold colored tiara with a red jewel. I think she might've also come with a ring for kids to wear but I might be making that up. She also for some reason had a gold ribbon choker that was impossible to remove? 2. A Cinderella doll, idk when she was made. 90s or 2000s? Pretty sure she was from Mattel but gave off Simba vibes. Had a white dress with blue sparkles similar to her wedding dress. Hair was platinum blonde, almost gray 3. Another Mattel Cinderella doll from the 2000s, when the franchise started deepening the blue on the dress. Had a silver plastic crown with a blue heart gem. Also had a blue choker, but unlike Snow White (and Ariel as you'll later see), this detail actually made sense 4. An Aurora doll from the 2000s, made by Mattel. All I remember about her is that her head came off once. Don't remember anything about the specifics of the outfit, other than the dress obviously being pink. She might've had a ring like the Snow White doll, but again, I could be going crazy 5. An Ariel doll made by Mattel in the 2000s, got her as a present in 2009. She was wearing a short-sleeved pink dress with silver sequin details, a pink choker, and a silver tiara with seashell detailing 6. A Belle doll made by Mattel in the 2000s, with (gasp) a painted on top, covered in glitter, and a slide-on skirt. Hair was the most matted I'd ever seen. Her head was super wobbly from the start but didn't pop off until just before I would've donated her anyway. Quickly threw her out when that happened 7. Another Belle doll from around the same time. Much better hair, a fully removable dress with a little pink plastic rose on the neckline, and a pink tiara 8. A hand-me-down 90s Jasmine doll from my aunt (looking back on it now, I get the hype). She didn't wear anything that looked like anything from the movie. She had this yellow strapless bikini top with an orange jewel in the middle, and matching yellow sparkly pants, a veil with a gold crown that featured an orange jewel, plus a gold fabric necklace, spiral-looking orange bracelet, and orange shoes 9. That exact Tiana doll 10. A Rapunzel wedding doll from the early 2010s, but with long blonde hair that quickly got messy 11. That exact Merida Doll

When it comes to sleeping beauty, I believe that blue color of her dress is caused by the thing that pink became "women" colour around fifties. Before the blue one was more commonly described as a "girly" colour, was considered as delicate and symbolised purity, while pink was considered as different tone of red, so power, "menly" stuffs etc. c;
makes me wonder if the fairies who can't decide which color for it to be are metaphorically arguing over traditional ways versus modern ways.
@@nothanks7263 ooh, I didn't think about it but if that's the point it's really cool! 😄
Sleeping beauty's dress looks better in pink than in blue to this day.
@@catewithac8978 Well my mistake I guess some of the dolls they made back then were Different then what they make today.
I remember they had gorgeous wizard of Oz toys at McDonald’s when I was younger
@@DylanRomanov You just unlocked a memory of mine. I remember owning those McDonalds dolls. They were so cuuuuute.
@@DylanRomanov
Yes!!
18:41 her skin in the movie has a purplish blue tint to it so it is accurate and her hair is accurate and more accurate then most recent elsa dolls
I enjoy when brands had liberties on styling the characters. I enjoy seeing historical or fun interpretations
I always loved the original Disney Store Anna and Elsa dolls, mainly because their eyes were painted so that they are looking at each other when together.
1:10 This doll is so cute though! They don't make her chubby anymore now :/
5:22 This doll doesn't look like Aurora _at all_ but I think she's absolutely stunning.
I wonder if Disney will ever remake the older dolls (such as the ones from the 1950’s-1960’s) and
sell them as collectors items! Similar to how Barbie would remake older dolls as collector items.
That would be totally awesome!
In case some of you are wondering why Snow whites dresses are different colors than the film it’s because before the movie was released they repainted her dress out of preference even though merchandise for the film was already set.
Omg nostalgia lane. I had all these starting with Ariel ♥️ still have them! The Poca sun color changing outfits.. I have the whole cast!
I believe there was an Esmeralda doll also, absolutely stunning.
now that the rights return to Mattel I don't expect so much from the play line editions but I do expect a lot from the collector's editions, I just hope they don't disappoint me 🤨
Yeah, Mattel has been disappointing lately tbh
Wait, Hasbro lost the licence?
Fascinating seeing how much better the Disney Store dolls are compared to the other versions. Aww you didn't include some of my favs Jane, Esmeralda and Megara. I guess your video would have been ridiculously long though.
I agree completely with you about Pocahontas. I had her as a child, and she’s still one of my favorites. The body shape is perfect for her
I didn't even think about how snow white and cinderella dolls looked back in the day, this was a really cool video :)
I used to think my Ariel doll was so gorgeous and now it looks so childish, but all in all, I will always be fascinated by that red hair. Iconic.
Joey, i must praise you for all the research and effort you put on your work ❤️
Oh wow, those Tyco Ariel dolls are giving me so much nostalgia!
The Mattel Disney Princess dolls from the 90s are still some of the best. I still have mine. The original Jasmine doll is one of my favorites. ❤
My sister (funnily enough you two are the same age) and I had those Pocahontas and Mulan matchmaker dolls-we adored them! This was a really informative video. Have you considered doing a similar video for non-Princess Disney heroines: Wendy, Alice, Megara, etc?
I love the history lesson! I am senior, I bought my first Barbie in about 1961 for $3.00 at a local five and dime store. 😀
Omg I had the Disney store tiana when I was younger, I was so happy to have a black Disney Princess she was always my fav
I had that Ariel doll as a kid! The only thing that remains from her is that sleeping bag tail of hers. I remember trying to have my Barbies wear it, but their legs were too long.
If I remember right Snow White was meant to look younger then she does in original film so maybe that why the dolls look younger
Madame Alexander Mcdonald’s dolls were my childhood.
Same.
I actually really like the original Snow White doll, the younger face sculpt and style suits her as she is supposed to be very young as a character.
I love the 90’s dolls 😊
I recently purchased the 2021 Holiday Rapunzel from the Disney store and the quality is amazing!
I had most of these later Disney Princess dolls from Mattel! 🥰
However, the Frozen dolls, I definitely bought the Disney Store ones there! :)
the raya disney store version is so stunning omg
Very high quality dolls!
it threw me for a loop when you said princess n the frog came out in 2008
i could've sworn it was made later ._.
It was 2009
I remember when the movie came out, you could NOT find Frozen dolls for Months! No store could keep them in stocks, always sold out online. Only the ugly ones were available if you could find them😂
I love all your videos I LOVE dolls and the same you like and love.
The Mattel Rapunzel doll is what made me start collecting the princess dolls (besides the ones I played with as a kid). I then started getting Disney Store dolls.
Merida is so underrated. I love the Disney store doll!
Oh I had that Pocahontas doll with the sun color change! So beautiful!
He’s probably in a country where the films were released much later than in the US. That happens all the time in the industry.
@@taydrabrookshire347 that's typically for non-English speaking countries though
@@grace5033 I don’t think that matters
The first Elsa doll was always a little creepy! I think its because they made the face sculpt while Elsa was still a villain and then the story changed and they had to quickly cover her up to look more like the final version of Elsa.
I was lucky enough to have the original Ariel (resculpted face), Belle, Jasmine and Aladdin dolls. I wore those out and my daughter now plays with the clothes for her Barbies. Thanks for the trek down memory lane.
I have a few OG Belles from my childhood . They are the prettiest
To me the older Pocahontas dolls had darker skin but maybe it’d the lighting lol
My faves would be Disney store Elsa and Anna, 1991 Belle, Disney Store Merida, Disney Store Rapunzel, and 1992 Mattel Jasmine.
Also Mirabel actually isn’t a Princess, but I love her Disney Store musical doll even if she isn’t in my top dolls since her face isn’t as good as others to me lol.
The reason why Aurora mostly wears blue back in the old days was because Cinderella's dress was mainly white or silver.
This was a wonderful idea for a video! Great job on this :)
The Snow White doll looks a lot like the Patsy doll by Effanbee! It's the 30s hair and the proportions, of course, but also the face and the arms, one of which is straight and one, at an angle.
That was the 90s Pocahontas and Mulan dolls as a kid they were my sisters and my favorites.
Now the coloring thing about the dolls is that the Disney Princess merchandise changed the color scheme of the princesses in various ways
I take pride in knowing that i own almost every disney store princess and prince and villains. And the tinker bell line from like 2004-6 ish
ahhh the nostalgia seeing the hasbro rapunzel doll again. miss it now :(
A 22 min video on doll history told by Joey?!? Heckkkk ya
For aurora she wears blue throughout most of her screen time with that dress which is why the doll was in a blue dress. The movie came out in 1959. She does wear a different cape in the movie. Also sleeping beauty didn’t make its money back but that’s only because they went over budget. The movie was still pretty popular.
I absolutely love this video, It was made on my Bday!!! I'm a huge Disney fan and loved the Mattel Dolls
It’s awesome that you had dolls growing up ❤️ I grew up in a low income household, and I had very few dolls. I was still grateful for them, but now that I have a job I want to grow my doll collection 💛💛💛
I also had Sun Colors Pocahontas too loved her so much as well
I had the Disney merida doll (among a bunch of the other Disney princess dolls) but she was my favourite girl ever. I loved her cape and bow so much, I took her everywhere with me and would rub the cape on my face because of how nice it felt
That’s so funny! I love the cape too
I had the Pocahontas doll, the leaves really did appear in the sun .Loved that one
Wish I had been around in the 90s when the Disney dolls were at their prime tho)
The ones that I did have tho, I loved. They included, if I remember correctly:
Hair was platinum blonde, almost gray
3. Another Mattel Cinderella doll from the 2000s, when the franchise started deepening the blue on the dress. Had a silver plastic crown with a blue heart gem. Also had a blue choker, but unlike Snow White (and Ariel as you'll later see), this detail actually made sense
4. An Aurora doll from the 2000s, made by Mattel. All I remember about her is that her head came off once. Don't remember anything about the specifics of the outfit, other than the dress obviously being pink. She might've had a ring like the Snow White doll, but again, I could be going crazy
5. An Ariel doll made by Mattel in the 2000s, got her as a present in 2009. She was wearing a short-sleeved pink dress with silver sequin details, a pink choker, and a silver tiara with seashell detailing
6. A Belle doll made by Mattel in the 2000s, with (gasp) a painted on top, covered in glitter, and a slide-on skirt. Hair was the most matted I'd ever seen. Her head was super wobbly from the start but didn't pop off until just before I would've donated her anyway. Quickly threw her out when that happened
7. Another Belle doll from around the same time. Much better hair, a fully removable dress with a little pink plastic rose on the neckline, and a pink tiara
8. A hand-me-down 90s Jasmine doll from my aunt (looking back on it now, I get the hype). She didn't wear anything that looked like anything from the movie. She had this yellow strapless bikini top with an orange jewel in the middle, and matching yellow sparkly pants, a veil with a gold crown that featured an orange jewel, plus a gold fabric necklace, spiral-looking orange bracelet, and orange shoes
9. That exact Tiana doll
10. A Rapunzel wedding doll from the early 2010s, but with long blonde hair that quickly got messy
11. That exact Merida Doll
The first sleeping beauty looks like those angels you would put on a Xmas tree
I work on that Jakks team! so cool to hear you talk about us c:
Credit where credit is due. The early snow white composition doll got the hair way closer than the more modern ones you showed.
Snow White was the first movie my dad saw. He was six years old. As a souvenir he got a jigsaw puzzle. The artwork is much like the movie poster.
Thank you for this video ! The first Mattel dolls are so good, I really miss this era. I've had Mulan when I was a child. Thanks for the momories ^^
this nostalgic omg i am about to cry. I used to had the ariel, the jasmin and the pocahontas doll
