I'm Dessard and I'll tell you that what he showed us really works. I've kept working on the angle of release and have really added 75 feet to my throw. Start low and release at a hard angle and the disc will lay out to a perfect S.
a good way to practice your stroke is to get a dish towel and go through the motion. you want it to make a good whipping noise in the air. the better the noise the more power your getting to your hand
I have been playing with no formal instruction for about 15 years. Not a pro - but I thought I could wing it.... I watched this video and no kidding - improved 75-100 Ft on my drives. Also the way it is taught to throw, even though the disc goes much further, it's much easier on my shoulder. Five Stars - Two thumbs up! Thanks for the advice.
Great tips that can definitely improve a player over time, given by someone who has all the authority to do so...but is anyone actually comparing the 'before and after'? Thrower 1 First throw (before instruction): 02:40 Just past 300 foot line Second throw after Marty's tips: 05:15 Lands in the same exact spot, but Marty starts saying "75 feet!!!" before it even lands! 300 plus 75 would equal 375, which would mean that the disc should've landed at the top of the hill. Am I not seeing something, here? Third throw: 05:40 Again, same distance...but for some reason, Marty keeps praising the throw and for some reason everyone goes with it?? "Now you have a drive! You've gained Buddy!!" As if the guy didn't have a drive before this? He threw the same distance! Marty seems a little too over-zealous to sell his tips, here. Thrower 2 and 3 Who knows, they don't show 'the before,' and in the last guy's case, they don't show the after... wtf?
Just bought some new and some used discs off Ebay. Going to get out and give this a shot! Thanks for the instruction. Introducing my 16 year old son to this and geocaching, hopefully we can spend some quality time and enjoy our parks! this video will sure help, my arm is sooo sore from my bad technique!!!
Discraft's video's, including this one, are my warm ups before going out to play serious. If you are like me you will notice a large change in your game if you watch this and others just before going out to play. The little tips are fresh in your head. Thanks for the tips, because of them I am not beating, but competing with low level pro's though I'm pretty new.
great advice, I took all his tips for technique and have added a ton of distance to my drive. improved my drives from an average of about 330 feet to over 400 feet in one day. now I'm getting birdie opportunities i never had before and even overthrowing some pins
The way that understable disc flatten out when you throw on a hyzer is the pop you put into your wrist. The harder the pop and the smoother the release the more likely you will actually make the disc straighten out. However, if you hyzer to much or dont have as much pop, your disc will fade left pretty quickly. The best thing to do is get your pop down throwing understable disc flat, then once you have a good snap and the discs start turning over slightly adjust the angle more towards hyzer.
I've been playing for several years, but my average drive is still in the 250 foot range (seems like every person on the internet throws 350 feet, but i never see them at the courses :P ). I had some issues gripping the disc too hard, and the higher throw...changing to the lower throwing motion and fixing my grip has definitely made my throws more consistent, straighter, and w/ more spin for bigger "s" turns. Great Video! Thanks!
This was definitely awesome. I have added about 50 feet to my drive and I have also straightened it out quite a bit by finally learning to "S" my drive....I thank you...thank you....thank you....
Cool video. I have been told by a lot of the older golfers at my course not to pull upwards but straight across the chest, and it always seemed counter intuitive to me. Well now I can just relax and go back to pulling the way I had been.
Disc golf started in the 70's. I can't wait for winter to be gone so that I can get out and try these techniques. I already throw 450" and I don't use the step so I'm hoping it will ad at least 30" more.
Great advise. Will try it on the course in a day or so. Throw low and at an angle is a little bit opposite of what I´m doing now though... Love theese vids, full of great advise!
Sweet, I can't wait to give this a shot today. My drives suck horribly and tend to vary extremely. I go anywhere from ~175 feet to ~275 feet or so. I know I'm losing a lot of power in my throw. The hand grip is a little hard to see in the video.
I seem to remember watching this video a long time ago and Big Jerm and Ricky Wysocki were also in the video as team members. Maybe the footage was taken out because they became sponsored by other manufacturer's. Anyway great video I was just hoping to see old footage of Ricky and Big Jerm. If anyone from Discraft is reading this please bring back the Elite X predator.
i've been lacking power and distance in my backhand drives and have been trying to unlock the secrets to better throws. i was starting to think it was the discs i use, and i throw a discraft esp xl, and elite z xpress, both of which are "long distance". i think this video may help, although i've tried the knuckle grip and completely lose control of my throws. it's a lot to work on but i think it all comes with practice. footwork and body movement is the most important factor, i think. taijutsu
Yea, pull out the Force! Use a very overstable disc when throwing into headwinds, or even crosswinds. Headwinds push your disc up then down often. Throw the disc low. You can put anhyzer on it but be sure it will come back!! If the wind is at your back, wind can push the disc it up, and you can achieve more glide, it might not flex out untill it's to late too. It's best to use the driver your the most comfortable with, and put extra hyzer on it, maybe more height if your in a field.
i gained 30 feet so far i was throwing 325 now its a little over 350 and getting better with my left arm !!! before i was running up normal and now im learning the backwards run up
Hey sportdisc I really enjoy watching your videos they are always helpful. Is there anyway that you can put up a video of someone explaining how to throw an understable, overstable and stable disc? In this video the pro talks about changing his throw depending on the disc, I was just wondering if he could explain how and what he changes when throwing an understable vs an overstable disc. Thanks for reading
Simple question... Can fat people like me throw discs like that? I just started playing this sport maybe 2 weeks ago and I can barely throw 75 feet. I'd sure like to throw at least 150 - 200 at the very least.
@pickboy87 Just following up. So I tried these techniques today and I saw a nice improvement over my throw. I'm still learning the throw (it's a little wild/high at times), but it's definitely farther than before. I don't feel like I'm losing massive amounts of power each time I throw.
Yeah, same here. AND I'm also bending my wrist too much AND I'm not turning my back enough. I throw around 300-310 feet so here's hoping that this helps. Though it's 31 degrees Fahrenheit outside, so yeah.
wow first time seeing this... alls i can say is that im a stud... im the first guy.. in the blue shorts.. that year i got 79th at am nats this year i got 16th.. maybe the clinic helped....
someone needs to help me out the surge has a stability of 1.6-1.8 how is that understable like he said in the video and how does throwing it almost on a 90 degree angle get some much distance stright ?
if the wind is coming up behind you it will make the disc go higher and farther, if it is coming toward you it will drive the disc up and back down like throwing it too high, and if its coming from side to side it will make the disc more likely to flex, turn over, or wobble out depending on the throw. you just have to look up how to combat this, its too much to type
@youtah676 seriously? who put on the clinic? its written all over the beginning of the video, and if that wasnt enough, this is discraft's youtube channel
They weren't all that bad too begin with lol. His tips probably did help in the long run though. My throw is very unique. Nobody I know throws like me, and I usually throw 400+ feet. Distance isn't everything though. Most courses are Par 3s, which means 300-400 feet holes. Approach and putting are more than 50% of disc golf. I don't how good they are at those things, but my guess is they need to work on that more than anything.
try sum slower disc like a buzzz, comit, really any midrange. people think drivers r good to throw when u first start to play and thats not true. stick to slower and understable disc
from 2:40 to 3:40 is complete bs... I throw with that grip and like that sometimes depending on the shot and I can throw a 500ft hyzer on command. Coda hatfield throws like that and thats who I got it from. Coda can throw 650+ so i disagree
Try this! Instead of focusing on turn around, long pulls, and all these confusing things. Its all in the wrist, not the arm. Just stand sideways and develope a twisting back and forth motion to find your rythym. Put the disc out off your chest with a power grip. Small rim and big diameter disc are easier to feel the snap. Now rock your wrist back and forth opening and closing your palm finding rythym. Combine the two now. Dont throw for a minute two find your timing. DO NOT THROW IT, FLICK IT.

this helped me get 30-60 feet on my drives. I am now in the 300+ range. Thanks!
Marty Peters is a great guy to golf with. He helps everyone on their game. Him and Ryan throw far!
I've been playing for several years, but my average drive is still in the 250 foot range (seems like every person on the internet throws 350 feet, but i never see them at the courses :P ). i watched this video about 7 months ago, and it helped my drives alot. i want to go to one of these, and see what im still doing wrong.
Thanks to Marty, Discraft andthis clinic for improving my drive. I can hit 425+ with a Force now.
Carl Hall
This has been the most informative video that I have found. I have increased my distance, and am now able to throw a lot straighter. Thanks Marty!!
Mission accomplished! Nice addition there at the end. I have some bad habits and this really helped. Thanks!
Definately one of the better Discraft videos, although I must say that Mark Ellis and his stuff really rocks too!
5 Stars! This is a very helpful video, and Marty Peters is a great coach and instructor. Wish I could spend a few minutes with him.

7:34 awkward
lol
this is the best one i've seen and i've watched a lot
gained me, 50ft on my drive, i was over snapping it... i wish they had an in person clinic for this nere grand rapids mi......

Great teacher Marty!
I will give this a try! Totally different than the way I was taught to throw.
I'm going to by a Discraft disc next just because of this video! Thanks!

I learned a lot from this video. I need to change my grip up, so we will see if this helps me at all.

Last tip improved my distance by 50 meters. That's 150 feet ppl. I kept my arm too high all along
Simple question... Can fat people like me throw discs like that? I just started playing this sport maybe 2 weeks ago and I can barely throw 75 feet. I'd sure like to throw at least 150 - 200 at the very least.
@yumberri Pretty sure the first guy used the discraft avenger, maybe avenger ss. The avenger ss is stable and the avenger is overstable
Thank you, I am going to try your suggestions.
@pickboy87 Just following up. So I tried these techniques today and I saw a nice improvement over my throw. I'm still learning the throw (it's a little wild/high at times), but it's definitely farther than before. I don't feel like I'm losing massive amounts of power each time I throw.

And here I had been using a fan grip for all my shots. XD
5:23 you can tell Marty has his attention after that quick improvement lol.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
thank you for the pointers, this video increased my distance by 75-100 ft
Great video, great tips and tweeks.
What disc are they throwing?
:47 was just amazing...the form and flight is just nice to watch...I need more practice.
Straight as in where you aimed or straight as in the disc tends to turn while flying? The latter will naturally happen when you start throwing harder.
hey man! this is so awesome! i bought a disk off u at kensington last weekend! 10 for reg and 15 for titanium! hahaha how ironic id see u on here
@MrSoapbox29 theyre throwing up hill though as well....when he said 350 he was talking about flatland
Just picked up a sweeeeeeet 174 supercolor spectra I wanna go try these tips out with.
A decent clip, I felt it was very informative... hahah but the ending almost had me fall out my seat it was sooooo Jokie!
11:45 to see the best throw over and over again!
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
i hear ya I just got back fromplaying..the cold air makes the discs drop like rocks doesn't it
The smaller guy around 9:30 should get shorter shorts to make him look taller.
Dont let that discourage you. You absolutely can learn to throw farther. What discs are you using?
More vids like this please..
yeah ii was thinking about that to.. sure this works on an understable disck but how does it work if they would throw an overstale disc.
thumbs up if you cried like me in the end
wow first time seeing this... alls i can say is that im a stud... im the first guy.. in the blue shorts.. that year i got 79th at am nats this year i got 16th.. maybe the clinic helped....
Nice Video!
I don't know if you look at 11:48 that sure looks like he's pulling straight across his chest instead of lowering it like he wanted the player to do.
Hopefully this will work, only one way to find out
lol. the ending.
Mission accomplished
someone needs to help me out the surge has a stability of 1.6-1.8 how is that understable like he said in the video and how does throwing it almost on a 90 degree angle get some much distance stright ?

this vedio helped so much and now i throw bout 315 at the farthest
@youtah676 seriously? who put on the clinic? its written all over the beginning of the video, and if that wasnt enough, this is discraft's youtube channel
the tips for the last guy helps
@frisgolfer
The most comprehensive dg wind tutorial ever created is by Oklahoma's Ron Convers. discraft.com/res_wind06_p1.html
great vid!
It was the best
Are they using the Avenger ss for these throws?
Danke . Sehr hifreich
Good vid, i play all the time :D

i can throw 400 accuratley and i can max out closer to 500. i owe this video a considerable amount.
awesome
oh waow this will help alot, im throwing just like that last guy XD
0:10 i flinched
This a sport??? Damn why am i not involved???
just pick up a disc and get throwing my man!
Thumbs up if you went disc golfing after watching this.
@MrJaakkoLe Wow you're so cool.
Discraft all the way started with innova sucked till I got my first xl
no you cant, the world record is 836 feet, thanks for your input though...
I didn't even know disc gold was around for 26 years haha
sure, with a roller.
10 people are Innova Disc lovers.
try sum slower disc like a buzzz, comit, really any midrange. people think drivers r good to throw when u first start to play and thats not true. stick to slower and understable disc
its still shoulder to shoulder, just now you are bent over more
I can throw a thousand feet

but it won't go straight

@discgolfgod03 Why lie on the internet? I don't there there is anyone in the world that can throw 37 feet.
How can Karl even throw 300 with such a runup -.-
Right?!?! Cheesy of all cheesies for the ending...but a good video nonetheless.
