    In this video we will be discussing subdivisions.
    To be comfortable with subdivisions we need to use a metronome and set it to a comfortable speed.
    In this lesson we will deal with triplets and sixteenth subdivisions. Alternate the two.
    Start without the guitar while you feel the pulse and find the subdivisions.

    David man your a Jedi for making things simple and easy to teach something so hard to grasp. Time Signatures and the notations such as Breaks, Timing, Pulse were alien to me man, i can only request if you an make a lesson or let me know if there is one on notations. Each time i come across something related to notations its so hard to grasp..
    Thanks dude,

      Did so but its hard to grasp how to feel the Pauses and breaks, in notations if not the Time signatures as an whole, if you have an idea or way to explain i would most certainly welcome it.

    Awesome video - for a beginner - absolute beginner - struggling to get say GARAGEBAND to have a meaning full click or backing track - just playing with a backing track offloaded from the internet is just a little daunting for a starter - there is no click or visual representation of where you are and if you are in fact playing in time.
    ie. So i am just practicing scales now - so clicking on GB and recording myself playing the scale shows me the timing - but also would like to add some musical backing to it with and without the visual aid. Any advice

    Hey David. I'm struggling with posture and tension when playing. I tend to curve my back and bend over the guitar even if i'm consciously trying not to. On top of that, i think i'm clenching my teeth, my mouth hurts after playing, same as my fingers because i put just too much tension. I try to relax but two minutes later i'm tense again, i start to feel physically unconfortable when i'm playing. I think it's the main problem hindering my progress, what can i do?

      UnchainedRomeo ... I am not a teacher , but i guess most of players experienced that ... Always remenber that the final level is to play without any pain ... Music is emotions and pleasure... not pressure and pain ... And the way to reach that is to pratice untill you are able to play without pressure ... For example , to be able to talk to someone while playing means that you've reach that "level" ... You are on top of it ... You can see the girls in the audience while paying without being in trouble ... But having said that ..i know, it is easy to say ...Difficult to reach ... But its possible ...

      yeah but i'm not just starting, i've been playing for some years now. I don't pretend to be a pro shredder, i just want to feel confortable playing so that i can play more, and practice more

    I don't understand what feel is. I'm perfectly capable of counting and playing the music on time but I don't know what I'm supposed to be feeling. Is it like a emotion or what? I can never get a straight answer out of anyone about this.

    • @Wallimann
      @Wallimann  4 года назад

      I'll plan videos on that topic! For me, it's the emotion you put into your playing. :)

      @@Wallimann thanks, I have alexithymia where basically I've never felt most emotions before besides anger and fear so it's a confusing subject for me.

      I like to look at feeling or emotion in music as interpretive expression; just like the various accent people have in natural speech or lyric in singing. Making music sound expressive is about how you emphasize certain pulses in rhythm in relation to a musical phrase. Part of this is how you play with the timing of the rhythm (while maintaining rhythmic integrity.. or not) and other parts involve the energy you put into it (not limited to just these two elements). I think people can't really give you a straight answer, because everyone voices their expression in different ways. If I said, "I'm angry and having a very bad day" in my own way, another person could voice the same phrase in a completely different, but still socially understandable way (considering the impact of the words themselves). The stress on different words would just make the phrase have a different effect on the same expression, or feeling/emotion/mood and most people don't even realize that they say things in a particularly unique way.
      If you're talking about how to feel rhythm though, that is a different, but similar aspect - one more focused on practice, repetition and lots of listening. Personally I'd say that is a prerequisite to learning how to express music convincingly.

      nespith My guess is you may be like me and have a task/goal oriented personality that is analytical and has a strong ego and these traits are implemented and utilize the side of your brain that processes these behaviors. This can be useful in music for learning theory, training and practice regimens, setting goals, etc. However, this side of the brain is not good for creating music, improvising and playing music, and timing. The secret to making your best music is being able to automatically ignore the ego part of your brain and accessing the creative side of the brain. This is more difficult for some and quite natural for others. I believe the most natural musicians hardly ever access the ego part of the brain while playing and can access the creative side of the brain instinctively. Tapping into your creative side is all about letting go and keeping your mind from telling your body what to do (which is ego). Closing your eyes can be helpful and some advocate smoking weed. Blocking out your ego, allows you to get to your creative and expressive core which can be dominated by a strong ego. Once you can get to this place free from your own interference, then your creative side is free to react, interact, feel, and hear the music and has an environment where it is comfortable and flourish. Until, you can get to this place, you will not feel, react, or express from your creative core and will not make your best music. There certainly are some with more creative aptitude and some that have very little. I think the first thing you need to always remember to do is take a deep breath before starting to play, close your eyes, and briefly meditate by clearing your mind of thought to get to a place where you are free from your own minds interference. If you are starting a song think of the song as if it is starting to play in your head (the more familiar you are with it the better, this can’t be overstated). Listen as it plays in your head for the underlying beat or pulse. This is the beat you tap your foot to. You should begin tapping and counting. There is also a subdivision of that beat that plays with a rythym. You should be able to feel this and begin to play with NO Tension. If you are ever playing with tension you 1) Don’t know it well enough, 2) are playing it wrong, 3) aren’t blocking out your ego side, 4) all of the above. If you’re playing with tension, then you aren’t making good music and you need to fix it. Keep practicing it until you get it right before moving on. I would start with songs with a 1/4 note feel in 4/4 time and learn several until you know them inside out, focusing on nailing those downbeats with your hand and tapping foot in synch, and playing with precision with crisp and light strums precisely on the beat and no extra notes or noise between the gaps. It is critical to feel the pulse of the song and have your foot (or inner core) keeping time while your hand reacts effortlessly to that core pulse free from tension and unnecessary sounds. I would get proficient at 4/4 quarter note feel before moving on to 8th note feel, triplet, 3/4, 16th note on oddball signatures. Really, solid accompaniment rhythm is mostly what every pro guitar player ends up playing the most, and it is a paramount and often overlooked fundamental skill. You will find simple rock solid rhythm skills and simple playing separates the pros from the average guitarist. This is a fundamental skill that is under taught and under appreciated, but if you take the time to instill yourself with solid timing and fundamental rhythm you enhance the success and enjoyment of your music playing for a life time.. If the rhythm ain’t grooving, then it all falls apart. Until you have this down you shouldn’t concentrate on much else.
