Future USABO paper: Which of the following enzymes is used in the last step of glycolysis? Me: I don't know BUT in the 1960s there was a more mathematical approach to biology ayyyyy!
Thanks, this is exactly what I needed. It would be really cool if you made a video about how you convert your notes and textbook material into Anki and how you study it (I know you did a video of the basics on Anki already)!
I honestly would not bother converting to Anki. Anki I think is well suited to quizbowl, but not much else cuz it's basically just word association. I only used it for things that I wanted to remember for a while but didn't particularly care about understanding in depth (so obscure facts from chem and bio or other random textbooks I read). If u're studying for an oly or an AP, I think Anki isn't gonna be that useful (maybe for USABO and usnco)
I don't card science so this is mostly secondhand stuff I've learned but you can use image inserts/image occlusion if you want to memorize pathways in biology or reaction mechanisms in orgo. Also people do use Anki in med school and I assume it's very helpful in biology/other memorization based science courses so use that information as you wish.
Dude, I totally agree. I've had the best results remembering the material following and answering personal questions I have. Developing a review schedule of past questions & answers and deriving more questions by working to integrate that info is fucking critical. Keeps the motivation and curiosity too. Good video. One thing to make it better would be to give some kind of brief introduction at a slower pace. Still thanks for the vid.
For physics and math olympiads, is it really necessary to take notes. I feel like practice problems help me more than taking notes. Thanks for the amazing video though!
I agree with you, I think note taking isn't that useful for problem solving olympiads. I personally never took notes for math or physics, but if u're learning physics for the first time it sometimes helps to take notes or even just write down things that trip you up in problems
When you mentioned the level 1, level 2, level 3 questions, did you mean the official usabo questions or the Campbell textbook questions? I just now started studying for my first usabo so Im genuinely confused about everything.
Would you say reading all of the textbook is absolutely necessary to get a 5 in ap bio or apush? i find that prep books have comprehensible, condensed information, but i’m afraid they’re too condensed.
@@Cararra Sorry for the late thank you, I didn't realize you responded. Thank you so much for telling me that. I've been stressing out. You're doing a favor for so many people.
This is my first time studying for USABO. How long do you think I should study everyday until February? Do you think I would have enough time to go through multiple books? (I'm thinking of using Campbell, tortora anatomy and physiology, and maybe Raven's plant biology.
I’m no Cararra, but Campbell’s is the best book out there for Open and Semis. Raven Plant Bio is also great, but read it after Campbell. After you complete Campbell’s, try out some of the past exams (both open and semis), see what you’re missing and then read textbooks/sections accordingly.
agreed :D, I would not recommend trying all 3 books before next years USABO unless you already finished campbell (if ure starting campbell right now you're going to have to focus on that, I don't think you'll have time for the other books). I basically did one chapter every two days, so you could try doing that
@@Cararra On average, how many hours do you think it took for you to get through one chapter? I started but I feel like ti's taking me way too long to finish it.
Ayah A. I don’t take that long to go through a chapter with focusing on details. It depends on how much bio I already know. If you have at least an honors class worth of experience, 3 hours per chapter. I’m able to cover a chapter in 2 hours with notes.
Did you take any prep courses prior to participation in these olympiads? I’ve seen people succeed with and without them, so I’m just curious regarding your experience
@@Cararra Oh ok. Lucky lol I wish my school had a club rip. I know that this video was much more dedicated for science bowl and quizbowl, but do these tips apply to studying aops books and stuff?
@@jasonshaye3567 Yeah, I believe they do. I’m doing an aops book right now and I think it helps. Mainly for math, though, notes aren’t as important as practice problems. Focus more on those. But like he said, don’t look at the whole solution and stuff. Also, I know that I’m late to comment and was wondering if you ended up doing any olympiads. If so, what were your results and some of your tips along the way? If you don’t mind of course. Thanks!
I am thinking of skipping my schools Honors Chemistry and going straight to AP. What is a good textbook for learning what I will miss from the pre-requisite class?
If you learn calculus-based physics, will that cover the entirety of algebra-based physics? What I mean is, can I go directly to calculus-based physics or do I have to do algebra based physics first? (For F=ma, AP Physics 1, and AP Physics C) can I use calculus-based in all three of the examples (For Physics C yeah but the other two as well?)
You'll miss out on some thermodynamics and relativity from AP phys 2 and fluids for mechanics, but if you have the option to take calc based, I would do that and self study the rest

yee cuz there are also some obscure question's (usnco is unique in that it has a lot of problem solving and memorization)

been wating for this
I have a bad habit of not taking notes, but thats likely not going to change

Not at all lol, you only need the prep books for the tests (the tests usually cover wayyyy less material than what's in the full textbooks)
