I just got an opportunity to paint an outdoor mural for one of my graphic design clients next spring. Your videos are SO helpful for someone like me diving in for the first time. Thank you!
Also I love your work. I am a show painter I airbrush mainly large work on carnival rides scenery. Semi trailers etc. I love wall murals. I’ve done quite a few. Never knew about doodle grid method. But makes total sense to me. Thank you for that. You never know it all.
Grid system is my go to, especially since I love math. (My love for algebra surely came in handy for this). I also do the plus signs, instead of full squares. I want to (and will) master the doodle and freehand methods though with more practice! 😊
Great vid, I might have two suggestions: 1. If you want to go freehand on a large scale: swap your cans for a large paint-stick and roller. I've also witnessed fellow artists use a paint-gun as a sketch-tool for the first layer. 2. Check the surface for marks/repeating patterns: many surfaces have either tiles, bricks or even floorbeams that'll be visible between each floor. Those make perfect 'natural' marks. Ran production on a series of 8 murals of 12/14 stories high. At those sizes you simply can't grid everything, for it'll take way too much time. Most I've worked with use a system like the second one.
I found this vid just looking for tips on scaling for murals and come to find out youre a Denver artist! I'm from Denver too, living in Grand Junction now. Thanks for sharing techniques and for making the world, (and Denver) more beautiful!
Your videos are very informative! Thank you for your transparency!!! I’ve used every method you mentioned so far, except the projector method. My favorite is the grid but I will freehand things that don’t require accuracy, as you mentioned! GREAT STUFF!!!
This was really awesome, thank you for posting and sharing this information. I love your illustration style, its just so beautiful. Will be trying a large canvas soon and was not sure how to tackle it this gives me hope I can pull it off!
Thank you so much! This is very helpful , i appreciate you breaking it down and showing us all different methods and what works best and when! Thank you!!
Thanks so much for all of the helpful tips, they are truly priceless! Any suggestions for painting a curved surface such as a fuel tank? I did a small one recently and ended up having to freehand the whole thing which took forever. Just wondering if there’s an easier solution.
No problem. im always glad to share. i think a grid should work because the grid on your reference is like an unwrapped tank. the projection and doodle grid methods wont account for the curvature of the tank
I am surprised that we don’t have the technology available yet to use AR glasses do assist with this. I’m thinking something like Da Vinci Eye AR combined with AR glasses, so wherever you look with those glasses on, the image is projected. Even cooler would be if you could turn layers on and off with a quick tap. If something like that is available now or in the works I would love to hear about it. BTW, keep up the great work!
I think that the AR out there at the moment isn’t that consistent enough for scaling up artwork on the scale and keeping that information over the course of days or weeks while painting the wall. I think once that happens, it will become another resource for scaling up work.
Projector you can section your image pretty easily. If you measure your wall, and make your image 1 pixel / mm, you can project it in sections by measuring where on the wall your light can reach, then selecting that area of your reference image, and using perspective to pinch the edges to your projectors visible working space.
Also works if you can fit the whole wall in your projection, you perspective and pinch the edges of your reference image to fit the edges of your working surface. No distortion. Works on an angle if you can’t get the distance to beam it all in one.
I’m an artist but still always learning. I have always be amazed at an artist painting portraits in different colors then flesh tone, I noticed in this video you have many examples. H ow do you learn this technique. Thanks Dave
@@iamdetour Makes sense as it provides more clarity for the image. I'd be curious to hear your take on a side by side example of a gridded scale and your method. Likely it's subjective, but the more organic method you've developed could lead to more accuracy.
Hi Detour. Thanks for all your clear & very useful advice and examples on mural production- particularly the doodle grid option which I have never heard of. Do you ever design on your mac for eg for your chosen large format printer to print onto vinyl and install?
When using the grid method, say I have a 8 x10 or 8x11 reference I'm trying to draw and put on a 30x40 canvas I cant for the life of me figure out the dimensions 🫣 its embarrassing cause I use to be a math wiz as a kid and teenager but i'm 30 and losing my intelligence in that area lol. least when trying to draw. BTW your art is tremendously good, thanks for these tips...I am hoping to use this doodle method when I start my room mural
Hi thanks all. I have little problem getting smaller mural and paint jobs, any advice on landing the LARGER PROJECTS, LIKE FOR COMMERCIAL CLIENTS ETC?? T I A 🙏🙏
I have been commissioned to paint a portrait on a 40x 56 canvas. I am very familiar with the grid technique but I want to learn how to do the scribbling technique. What program do you suggest I use for this type of project?
I've used the grid method so far. I've only done two murals. Great video by the way. Very helpful. I want to know though. What computer programs do you use grid and doodle method?
I use procreate. I did a video of that process here: ruclips.net/video/vF5A_9vylrQ/видео.html I also now do the tape grid: ruclips.net/video/lF3KPUvFDzg/видео.html
I also am sold on procreate. I was amazed when I first seen some one use it. I will never draw on paper again. Procreate is a artists best friend. If anyone used procreate. And then ditched it for a different program. That was better. Please let us know what program that is.
Your video will be more successful if you remove your background music, because it could be annoying and it distracts many people from listening. It has been proven.
i would LOVE to watch you "freehand " a 7 storeys high mural, sometimes with a scaffold in the way and no way to distance yourself from the wall..obviously, judging by your one year old RUclips account that would be a cakewalk for ya,usually it is on the internet for 14 year olds that never achieved anything. If you'd like to point us out to your work I'll gladly check it out, prove me wrong! But you won't..😂
The Doodle Grid is genius and I really appreciate you sharing these techniques. Thank you!
You are so welcome! Always glad to share the different ways and processes on how i create art

Very useful video.. God bless you. Please give some ideas how to enlarge in big canvas🙏🙏
Amazing!
Thank you man!
This is clever. Have you ever left some of the doodle grid in the finished work?
I try to cover up everything so it doesn’t show.

I have been commissioned to paint a portrait on a 40x 56 canvas. I am very familiar with the grid technique but I want to learn how to do the scribbling technique. What program do you suggest I use for this type of project?
I suggest Procreate. its $10 for the iPad. Also, Here is a doodle grid tutorial video i did to help artists. ruclips.net/video/vF5A_9vylrQ/видео.html

I use the Aaxa M7 projector now. I did a review here. ruclips.net/video/fEJO_sSAjec/видео.html
Have you painted on an outdoor metal surface? What kind of paint will stand up to the elements? For a grid system have you used a projector?
♡
Wait cuz the doodle grid is actually.. so convenient
👌👌👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Sankiyu
doodle teknik is fucking easy than grid 😂

The first of 4 methods to "Scale Up" your work is......drum roll......Free Hand!! Draw it the size you want. Bye.
Lol! You're indubitably more upset about your nescience with the visual arts lexicon than the creator's content.
It's easy to do it on paper, but on a big canvas there is no way you get the proportions right
