Making Aircraft Fairings

  • Wow 100 episodes so far on the Zenith CH-750 Super Duty build. I wonder what the final count will be when I make the last building video?
    In today's video Len and I are making a fairing that goes around the bottom of the windshield. It consists of two layers of glass cloth.
    I am far from an expert on working with fiberglass (luckily for me Len is a master at it!). Although I'm not expert it really is fun and easy to make a fairing. Give it a try if you want to dress up your airplane!

    The issue with stretching the fabric can be addressed by carefully rolling it up and then unrolling it onto the resin.

    Nice work. Could you brush the micro on after the layup has just started to firm up so it could cure all at the same time as layup? Clear packing tape works great by itself as a release and since it's super thin doesn't leave much ridge at joints.

    Just another tip, your local HobbyLobby or other fabric shop will have Dacron, or Dacron - like, fabric for cheap. It’s also thinner / lighter and conforms to curves ( lays down) easier than the “heavy” covering material I think you’re using. Also for long strips of glass, simply loosely roll it up after you cut in on the bias. Then unroll onto the part - helps keep distortion to a minimum. Also, stores better for the next job.

    A near by neighbor who I meet thorough the local EAA chapter, is building a 701 and told me about this channel. I have been racing cars and making them as well and I make fiberglass from raw materials for bodywork. I noticed a previous post and I liked it since packing tape is an excellent way to cover a surface since resin will not adhere to it. It is made of poly vinyl chloride which is the main ingredient in PVA release agent.
    Also I am curious why your resin is so dark brown? Is it old resin? Stuff that is aging will get a darker brown as it ages and new resin is usually clear or nearly clear and close to the viscosity of water.
    Also since you have a sweater and ski cap on, is it cool in your hangar? I hope you know that polyester resin will not set up as quickly depending on the temperature and humidity you are working in as well as the amount of hardener you add.

    Ummm. Perhaps you could try some mold release wax (Partall Paste Wax #2) and some PVA (spray on)? Duct tape and Vaseline just seems... wrong?

      Yep, I'd use packing tape and wax, it's thinner and you'll have less lines in the glass product when done. Peel ply underneath doesn't make sense to me either as it is just increasing the thickness of the base and making more finish work to be done later.

    I'm curious why you don't mix the chemicals at the fuselage? Thats sure to give you some time... Any Whoo, you guys do really nice detailed work. 10:00 can you imagine if you had to fabricate that pannel by aluminum instead of fiberglass..

      That would certainly be easier! The resin is kept in a heated cabinet in Len's hangar. It's also mixed with special measuring pumps that aren't really portable. So, we have to mix it at his house, and then rush to my house!

    Well done! The resin dash in this weather, albeit in a warmed foam cooler perhaps, is a new complication.

    When you say 'peel ply' are you you referring to fibre glass Mat?

      No the peel ply is different that the fiberglass. Peel ply is just aircraft fabric. It's the same material that something like a Piper cub, or my Pitts is covered with.
