A very kool reaction 😎! He was around 26 years old. I see 👁👁 you have reacted to Al Green before: Let's Stay Together- Audio and How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. Let's Stay Together was released as the lead single from Al Green's 1971 album: Let's Stay Together. It was written by Al Green, Willie Mitchell and Al Jackson Jr. It was produced by Willie Mitchell. Charles Chalmers, Donna Rhodes and Sandra Rhodes sang the background vocals. The song reached #1 on the Soul Singles Chart and #1 on the Hot 100. This performance is from the TV show: Soul!, on February 16,1972. The song is about an unconditional love where you are determined to stick it out through good times and bad. It's a very popular wedding song. According to Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 songs, after Willie Mitchell gave Al Green a rough mix of a tune he and drummer Al Jackson had developed, Al Green wrote the lyrics in 5 minutes. However, Al Green didn't want to record the song and for two days he argued with Willie Mitchell before finally agreeing to cut it. Al Green did about 100 recording takes before he got one he liked, and even then he wasn't sure the song was any good. It was Willie Mitchell who set him straight, telling him it "had magic on it". Al Green sang the song with Justin Timberlake at the Grammy awards in 2009 with Boyz II Men and Keith Urban joining in on the song. This performance was a last-minute addition to the show, as Rihanna and Chris Brown, who were both scheduled to perform, canceled after an altercation the night before. Barack Obama sang a couple of lines of the song during an appearance on January 19, 2012, at the Apollo Theater in Harlem for a fund-raising event. Al Green was the opening act and as the American president took to the stage, he noted the soul legend's presence in the audience and surprised his staffers close by with an impromptu spot of crooning. "Those guys didn't think I would do it," he joked. "I told you I was going to do it. The Sandman did not come out". The song has been featured in some TV shows including 📺: How We Roll ("The Hustle" - 2022), Bull ("Separate Together" - 2019), Hawaii Five-0 ("Pono Kaulike" - 2015), Being Erica ("Please, Please Tell Me Now" - 2011), The Big Bang Theory ("The Russian Rocket Reaction" - 2011), Parks And Recreation ("Road Trip" - 2011), Cold Case ("The Runner" - 2003) and more. Al Green began performing with his sister in a group called The Greene Brothers at around the age of ten. The Greene family relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the late 1950s. Al Green was kicked out of the family home while in his teens, after his devoutly religious father caught him listening to Jackie Wilson. He then lived with a prostitute, began hustling and indulged in recreational drug use. In high school, Al Green formed a vocal group called Al Greene & The Creations. Two of the group's members, Curtis Rodgers and Palmer James, formed an independent record label called Hot Line Music Journal. In 1968, having changed their name to Al Greene & The Soul Mates, they recorded the song: "Back Up Train", releasing it on Hot Line Music Journal. The song was a hit on the R&B charts and peaked at No. 46 in the Cashbox Top 100. However, the group's subsequent follow-ups failed to chart, as did their debut album: Back Up Train. While performing with The Soul Mates, Al Green came into contact with Memphis record producer Willie Mitchell, who hired him in 1969 to be a vocalist for a Texas show with Willie Mitchell's band. Following the performance, Willie Mitchell asked Al Green to sign with his Hi Records record label. Having noted that Al Green had been trying to sing like Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, and James Brown, Willie Mitchell became his vocal mentor, coaching him into finding his own voice. Before releasing his first album with Hi records, Al Green removed the final "e" from his name. Subsequently, he released the album: Green Is Blues (1969), which was a moderate success. His follow-up album: Al Green Gets Next To You (1971), featured the hit R&B cover of the Temptations' song: "I Can't Get Next To You", recorded in a slow Blues-oriented version. The album also featured his first significant hit: "Tired Of Being Alone", which sold a million copies and was certified Gold, becoming the first of eight gold singles Al Green would release between 1971 and 1974. Al Green's next album: Let's Stay Together (January 1972), solidified his place in Soul music. The title track was his biggest hit to date, reaching No. one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. The album became his first to be certified Gold. His follow-up album: I'm Still In Love With You (October 1972), went Platinum with the help of the singles: "Look What You Done For Me" and the album's title track, both of which went to the top 10 on the Hot 100. His next album: Call Me (April 1973), produced three top-10 singles: "You Ought To Be With Me", "Call Me (Come Back Home)", and "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)". In addition to these hit singles, Al Green also had radio hits with songs such as: "Love And Happiness", his cover of the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart", "Simply Beautiful", "What A Wonderful Thing Love Is" and "Take Me To The River", later covered successfully by new wave band Talking Heads and Blues artist Syl Johnson. Al Green's next album: Livin' For You (December 1973), was certified Gold. He continued to record successful R&B hits in the next several years including the singles: "Livin' For You", "Sha-La-La (Makes Me Happy)" from his 1974 album: Al Green Explores Your Mind, "Let's Get Married", "L-O-V-E (Love)" and "Full Of Fire". In 1976, Al Green established his Full Gospel Tabernacle church in Memphis, Tennessee. By the time Al Green released his 1977 the album: The Belle Album, his record sales had plummeted, partially due to Al Green's own personal issues during this time and his desire to become a minister. His last Hi Records album: Truth n' Time, was released in 1978 and failed to make an impact on the music charts. Continuing to record R&B music, Al Green saw his sales start to slip and drew mixed reviews from critics. Lyrics 🗒:
Let's stay together
I, I'm I'm so in love with you
Whatever you want to do
Is all right with me
Cause you make me feel so brand new
And I want to spend my life with you
Let me say that since, baby, since we've been together
Loving you forever
Is what I need
Let me, be the one you come running to
I'll never be untrue
Oh baby
Let's, let's stay together
Lovin' you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Whether times are good or bad, happy or sad
Why, why some people break up
Then turn around and make up
I just can't see
You'd never do that to me (would you, baby)
Staying around you is all I see
(Here's what I want us do)
Let's, we oughta stay together (gether)
Loving you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad
Come on
Let's stay,(let's stay together) let's stay together
Loving you whether times are good or bad
