It was an HONEST, REALISTIC video that showed all the things that could go wrong while changing the brakes. Now I know a regular guy like me can do it too.
Man you're amazing, thank you so much. The hardest work for me was to remove the freaking drum, OMG what a nightmare. I used two bolts 8mm by 1.25 in the little two holes in the drum and that made it lose a little, from there it took me forever to get it out haha. Thanks for this video, saved me $300 lol
Jonathan Sandi awesome man, the whole reason I was watching this is to figure out what size bolts I need to pull it,he doesn't say in the video and you just saved me a whole bunch of aggravation. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the video, got halfway through a job forgot to buy parts had to run out get them then got back and "derp, how do i put this back together?"...really saved my butt today
If you haven't done drum brakes in say 25 years changing both rear brakes with new drums, shoes & spring kit on a newly purchased used 2007 Nissan Versa, (4 speed automatic transmission, Not the CV Transmission!), with 175,000 miles on it where the rear shoes were Never replaced, get ready for heartbreak garage! I couldn't get the adjuster to back off the shoes through that tiny 1/2" hole. The old shoes had "Cut" a 1/8" deep 2" wide pocket groove, 360 degrees on both sides into the drums & those suckers did not want to come out! Side one, first success, got the 20v hand grinder with the thinnest disc and cut the drum from outside edge to center hub hole & then hammered a flat punch into the cut making a 1/4" gap and pried off the old rusty drum. Side two, I didn't like side the one method so using the same grinder & disc I simply cut a a 2" X 2" square window where the stock 1/2" parking brake adjuster was. That gave much better access to the adjuster & adjuster lock & I was then able to back off the old shoes 1/4" & I finally pried off old drum #2. I guess being a retired NASA Prototype Machinist for many years didn't hurt!
those springs can be a pain in the ass... Here's what I did that made it much much easier. Use a shoe lace around the hooked end to extend the spring into place then push it into slot with your other hand. Especially useful if the kit you get has small springs that are really difficult to stretch that far.
I am replacing the rear shoes on my 2011 versa..i couldn't figure out why the drum wouldn't go back on..it seemed as though the shoes were to big..then I realized that the adjuster needs to be all the way in...and the top springs go into the slot that is farther away..so thank you for this video..ill fix it in the morning..
Awesome video and Instructions! Just replaced the drums and shoes on my 2010 Versa and this video made it so easy for a first timer on rear drum brakes! THANK YOU!
I would just add to ALWAYS match up or compare the new shoes to the original ones before installing. just to make sure the auto parts store gave you the correct parts.
Doing rear brake drums on most cars, can be a pain, especially if you don't know when the last time they were replaced. The main springs that connects the two shoes together, are of Hercules strength!, And, are designed that way! This is one of the main reasons they are very challenging to replace!
See the access plug on the drum at the bottom at 12:53. It is so you can adjust the brake pads with the drum on. After putting the brake drum on and holding it in place with a lug nut, I pump the brakes a few times to center the pads then adjust the the brakes so that there is a little bit of drag.
White Lithium in moderation...just enough to live the parts so they work freely...also on the backing plate where the shoes contact it...a little white lithium on each...(3 contact points per shoe)
This vid is step by step except for the removal and replacement of the parking brake pins without damaging them. Please advise anything more than using a screwdriver and a pair of pliers to make this as easy as possible. Removal has me worried that the pin will not be in good enough shape to use as a replacement for the new brakes.
I ended up buying the brake drum replacement kit. It had all the springs but I only needed the clips. $10 at AUTOZONE. I bent them off. They were not reusable.
should be a 10 mm most of them are the same as your body bolt, or timing cover bolt. do not bend them, and you can just put them back when your done. ha. thanks for watching.
that hole is not for adjustment. you run a bolt in there and it presses up against the axle plate to remove the drum if the drum is stuck, or if the brakes are locked up. great question. thanks for watching.
Warning: The 2012 and newer Versa requires that you take the dust cap off and unbolt the Brake Drum. DO NOT BEAT ON IT. IT DOES NO GOOD!!!!!! IT WILL NOT SLIDE OFF WITHOUT THE NUT BEING REMOVED!!!!!! REPLY
You have the knowledge for sure. However most of the things people would get caught on is the removal of pins, bolts, springs etc. They never see you use pliers to remove the springs or see your technique. If people are watching this as instructional the hard parts for them is gonna be the pieces you cut out. You make it seem so easy but someone with not much skill could have a terrible time removing springs themselves because they cant see it done in your video. You seem to be an excellent mechanic just a little polishing around the edges is needed to provide an excellent training diy video.
question this.. what happen if I had it tight. which is like when you turn the axle its hard to turn it. or hard to put the drum back.. so I need to redo the spring and adjust the adjuster back? or put it to the lowest.. and readjust for right tightness. why youtube that this just shows up. lol.. been searching for 2009 versa tutorial.. now just saw this, 4 hrs to late. :( thank you again.
lol.. bad move driving it to work on the highway.. the drums were overheating. I head back home and loosen the adjuster. The good thing the drums and pads were still good as new. :)
did you match up the new shoes with the originals b4 installing? very important, can't always trust the auto parts store to give you the correct shoes.
push it back on, if it doesn't leak, ( most times it wont ) your ok, if it does leak ( when its back on ) then it has a hole and must be replaced. its gonna leak a little if it was popped. if you lost any fluid, you will need to bleed the breaks.
Usually a spoon is an adjuster tool that's bent and goes into an oval hole just behind the adjuster gear...(through the backing plate...was that frogs supposed to be grooves...yeah...typo...I do it alot...kewl!!!)
This video is helpless it does not show how to take apart all those parts, or the tools to do so. People wants to know how to do it, not that you know how to do it.

First time I've ever done brakes, your screwdriver trick with the upper return spring really saved me

Loved your video. Mostly because it was so real. Made me chuckle
Great video mate. Many thanks for uploading
Awesome video and Instructions! Just replaced the drums and shoes on my 2010 Versa and this video made it so easy for a first timer on rear drum brakes! THANK YOU!
Thanks mate I did my moms brakes today and saved a bunch of money cause of your video!
jake,, thats great ! that is what its all about. thanks for watching.
I would just add to ALWAYS match up or compare the new shoes to the original ones before installing. just to make sure the auto parts store gave you the correct parts.
You get new subscribe and I like your video, you make it very easy for understand.
Now I can fix my car break yay yay.😂😂😂

I was laughing my ass off at all the bloopers in this how to guide. Liked the vid just for that.
perfect, thanks for watching.
Very helpful! Thanks!
Thank you !!! Got my brakes replaced..

Great video. Where did you find that tool to pull the drum out? Works wonderfully well!
what size bolt in the drum threaded holes. After much aggravation it is a M8 x 1.25 on my 07 versa
Great video, man! First time doing shoes on my 2010 versa, and everything worked exactly as you showed it. Thanks!
perfect ! thanks for watching Adam !
I like your job👍
Would a 2011 versa be the same? I bought the drums and shoes along with all hardware online.
Did you make that tool to help take the drum off?
nice and simple explanation..! Hope it applies to my 2008 Versa
bill i have a 2008 nissan versa and need to do this, did it apply??? pls reply first chance you get.
Can you tell me where did you get your pully
What size are the 2 bolts that screws into the 2 holes?
Thank You.
great i appericate the help
Great job !!!
When you purchase the brake shoes, does it come with the springs ?
some sets do, i put a link in the description for the ones i used. thanks for watching
Thank you
Outstanding.
Not going to lie. I'm lagging it to this haha.
After cleaning the adjuster does it need any grease on threads?
White Lithium in moderation...just enough to live the parts so they work freely...also on the backing plate where the shoes contact it...a little white lithium on each...(3 contact points per shoe)
good movie,well done
thanks mava, and thanks for watching.
What size bolts? To get drum off
was i the only one saying the spring is backwards jajaja
Saw it too...he corrected it...funny...life...ho hum

Goob video
Good video . Next time show how you got the metal clips off
What size bolts did you use to help take the drum off? I'm assuming it's metric bolts, but don't know the thread size.
should be a 10 mm most of them are the same as your body bolt, or timing cover bolt. do not bend them, and you can just put them back when your done. ha. thanks for watching.
8mm x 1.25 threads
theres a hole on the front of that drum to back off the breaks... Am I wrong? I'm pretty sure there is on all the versas without a hole in the back.
that hole is not for adjustment. you run a bolt in there and it presses up against the axle plate to remove the drum if the drum is stuck, or if the brakes are locked up. great question. thanks for watching.
@@thomasbriansavingmoney ahhh.. That makes sense. Thanks for the video and the info!
@@thomasbriansavingmoney i think the person is correct that there is an access hole there; it seems to have a plain blade screw there you take out.
There is. It’s a rubber grommet. Pop it out and adjust it with the drum on.

JOEL OAFSTEEN THANKS for this info. And to those of you who find this invaluable information the nut is a 30 mm socket.
Not the 2012 nissan versa 1.8 s you can take it off without taking off cap did it today.
@@stanleyshedd2643 thx
thank you
@@jakerossjohnsonmotivation thx
What size bolt did you use for both sides to take hub off
5/16 thanks for watching.
My Nissan Sentra (and most of them) will use a bolt 8mm by 1.25
What size bolt did you use to pull off the cover??thanks.
5/16 thanks for watching.
10mm x 1.25 threads
correction 8mm x 1.25 threads
Or. There is another hole in the drum, has a rubber grommet in it, pop out the rubber and you can adjust that brake with the drum on
Where did you purchase the parts? ie drum shoes and assembly?
my local auto parts store. thanks for watching.
You should have shown how you done the clip.
Right

ah missed holding the clip. to go backward. if i leave it the way it was. does it hurt the drum? dang back to work tomorrow.
lol.. bad move driving it to work on the highway.. the drums were overheating. I head back home and loosen the adjuster. The good thing the drums and pads were still good as new. :)
remove the axle and get a swap with a car that has DISC brakes
thanks for watching.
God I wish
I legitimately was thinking this during. What a pain in the ass drums are.
I suggest a go pro camera. ☺
Thanks for watching!
You didn’t show how to put the pin back on for the shoe!!
Just use bolts to get drum off.
DUDE,!NO BOLT SIZE FOR PULLING?
YOUR SKIPPING IMPORTANT STUFF.
pretty similar too the other nissans drums like sentras
its the rear drums
Anybody know what size the bolts are to pull it off?
10mm x 25 threads
correction 8mm x 1.25 threads
I cant get my drum back on and ive got the adjuster backed off all the way
bad brake hose most likely
did you match up the new shoes with the originals b4 installing? very important, can't always trust the auto parts store to give you the correct shoes.
I came to see how to get the drum off
What if you accidently popes the seal? :/
push it back on, if it doesn't leak, ( most times it wont ) your ok, if it does leak ( when its back on ) then it has a hole and must be replaced. its gonna leak a little if it was popped. if you lost any fluid, you will need to bleed the breaks.
Putting the spring on wrong there bud
2000 Nissan quest my drum had groogs what is a spoon

You said nothing about braking pins when taking top off. Thanks for nothing!!!
