The Parker 87R Safety Razor. A Shave using Claddagh and a 'Certifyd' Boar Brush - Do You Soak Yours?

- I found the inexpensive 'Parker 87R' to be a very effective shave at a mild/medium level. It left me BBS, as smooth as a baby's bum. It is a short well balanced razor that delivers well.
The shaving soap today, is 'Claddagh' from Murphy and McNeil. This an homage to the scent of Silver Mountain Water by Creed. Very nice!

In Toronto we have very hard water. Limestone accumulates on bristles to make them stiff and brittle and they require much longer soak times if you don't want to lose hairs. Synthetic brushes have been a Godsend for us in this position.
That is a really good point, Mayur. Thank you for mentioning it. I sometimes forget that not everyone is blessed with having soft water, as I am in my area. I'll pin this one, mate.
Nice shave Video Mark. Parker has beautiful Razor's. Nice weekend I wish you.
Thank you, my friend. It has gone by very quickly. Have a good week ahead. All the best.
Thank you for loaning Mark the razor, Steve.
Nice little razor, too.
Nice shave Mark, One of my carers said you have a very relaxing voice. All the best.
Awesome, thank you for letting me know. I hope I'm not sending your carer to sleep, Ronnie. All the very best, my friend. Take care.
I ve had a large knot boar for some years. Every once in a while the boar aroma reappears. Part of the charm.
Now, that is odd. Shame it doesn't smell of bacon - that would be fantastic!
@@FriendshipShaving brilliant!!!!! Bacon shaving cream!
Thank you🌲
You are so welcome!👍
That is very interesting regarding Boar knots, like you I've always thought Boar knots require a 5-10mins in water, I must try the quick dip with my well broken in big Omega Boar and see how it goes. Have a great day and shave smoothly.👍😎🤟
Now, this is strange - I have just replied to your comment, and it has reappeared, as if I hadn't. I always thought the same, so this was a surprise to me. Hard water makes, a difference, and they do need a long soak - thanks to Mayur for that information. Your big Omega knot may take a bit more than my little knot. Good luck.
@@FriendshipShaving RUclips does strange things sometimes! I would just dip my brush in my soaking mug for a few seconds rather than under running tap water, that's what I generally do with my synthetics as well.
Hello Mark. Wow, a Hutchinson shirt. You are the man 👍
Nice shave. I have to say that I never tried a boar bristle brush yet but maybe I should do so.
Seems the Parker does a good job.
Have a nice weekend 😉
Hi Sven. I found my t-shirt online, as their is a city in Kansas, America called Hutchinson. 😀 I wonder if their is a town called Mark. It's got me thinking. Enjoy your weekend, mate. Take good care.
Nice razor, great aftershave. The brush was, for me, the star of the show. Safe weekend Mark
Thanks Roy, I'm very pleased with the brush but I will have to get a proper sized rubber O ring, just to finish it off. Cheers.
Hi Mark- Great shave; thank you! Nice job on the brush- looks great; very classic! I hope you have a restful, restorative weekend ahead. Be safe and be well. All the best, my friend!
Hi Mike. Thank you, I'm very pleased with how the brush has turned out. I actually used some leather stain on the handle, as it was all I had. I'll be taking easy, you hope get to do the same. Take care, mate.
Nice shave. Lovely razor and brush, and good to see old boar knot put back to use. On the idea of a short dousing, it's good to know that I can forego the long soak, though maybe not with a dense brush such as a Zenith Chubby Scrubby. What I always do is give boars a 1/2 hour soak. It fits into my morning routine and gives me good results, but I expect I'll give your idea a go on one of my 22mm piglets before too long. Cheers.
A half hour soak - wow! Actually, your point is well made, it's not so much what you do, but how you organise your routine that can make a difference to how enjoyable a shave might be. Cheers Warren
I do my morning constitutional for 30 min+ before showering and shaving and have been putting the boar in beforehand. Since hearing from you, though, I've limited the soaking time to time in the shower, and it still works. But I'll still give my scrubby boars a long dousing. Live and learn.
Very nice shave. I love the look of the brush. Very classic looking. Ive never had a boar brush, i do have a very old badger brush made by Stag. It was my grandfathers and is from at least the mid 1960s. Still in great condition. Again, great shave. Very enjoyable
Thanks 👍 I'm very pleased with the brush - it's a nice little hobby, trying to restore some of these brushes but they are getting way to expensive to buy and ship on eBay. Beautiful brushes though! I've heard of Stag brushes, they are quite rare I think. Your grandfathers brush - that is fantastic, man. Nice one.
Bravo Mark! It has been a while since I have commented, but allow me to observe that your production efforts are really improving. Your den is looking great and your collection of razors, brushes, etc,., is becoming quite impressive. Most importantly, you are looking quite well these days and I am delighted for your success and good fortune as a leader in the global world of wet shaving...very nice work on the boar brush restoration. I do soak my boar brushes for about 15 minutes before use. As always, please give my best to your mom and sister and know that you have my compliments, thanks and kindest personal regards. Charles K.
Hello, my friend. I do hope you are keeping well. Thank you for the kind comments, about the videos; it's always good to know that I am improving and moving forwards. The den is filling up and it is mostly due to the kindness of friends of the channel, especially Sven, who is a terrific fellow. My family are all doing well, as I hope yours are. You are the very epitome of a Southern gentleman, Charles. It is always a pleasure to receive a comment from you. Take care.
Another nice shave. I do soak my boar brush while I get my lather made and set up my razor for use. Have a good day mate.
You too, Mike. All the best.
Great shave as always! Please try the Parker 94R and you’ll be pleasantly surprised!!
I will one day, I promise 👍
Great shave today! Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰
Hello, my friend. I hope you are keeping well. Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks Mark! I also have an old bristle brush with a lovely handle and a bristle knot that has been shedding its load at an expanding rate recently: I have been thinking about simply buying a new knot, and keeping the long wooden handle.
That would be a good solution, I am all for restoring these beautiful old brushes, rather than buying new ones, which are usuallyy made from resin. It is quite easy to remove the old knot just go slowly and carefully. Go for it! 😁
I am gradually accumulating a razor from each of the Major Brands but unfortunately not a Parker, yet. I think on my next splurge I will finally give in a get a Parker 65 R(?) and that will pretty much complete that ambition. Although I should point out I AM NOT including the relatively recent glut of new and/or artisan or boutique razor manufacturers. As for Cool Water Fragrances, it reminds of a girl that lived in an authentic American " The Projects" Affordable Housing Apartment Complex...it used to scare the hell out of me to visit her.. :D
That sounds like a very good project, Keith. I am sure you will get to that Parker soon enough. The Projects sound a lovely place to visit - I hope she was worth it!
nice shave mate. i must say that. brush looks awesome my friend 👌 can’t say i use boar or badger bush’s my self but pretty interesting with the soaking or rather not soaking as it were . parker do seem to make a pretty nice razor
Hi Paul. I hope you are well. I used to soak my synthetic brushes, for no good reason. It just felt right, at the time. Now they have a couple of dunks and a shake 😀
Nice shave Mark! I'll have to try running my boar brush under the tap instead of soaking it the next time I use it. I mostly only use synthetics, but I do have 1 boar and 1 badger from Stirling that are a bit neglected 😉 so ill have to try that with both of them.
Have a good weekend!
Steve
Hey Steve. I've just been catching up and got to your comment. I've never typed 'good luck' so much in my life. I hope you are having a good week, so far. Cheers mate.
I fell in love with the Gillette Aristocrat so I bought the Parker 87R. Not disappointed, but I ended up getting an Aristocrat anyway. ;-)
Top man! I totally understand 😁
Hiya, Mark.
Boar knots can be a real bugger to break in, in my experience, taking far longer than badger hair knots. Some will take so long that it feel like an eternity.
I do have one boar brush, the Omega/Proraso, which I just thought would NEVER break in and was uncomfortable to use. So, I treated the hair with the chemicals used for hair dying, to split the ends. Well, it seems that I may have gone a little too far😉.
I now refer to that brush as my Slime Pig. It will be fully wet and soft after only a few seconds under the tap and is now so soft that it just will not, for love nor money, pick up enough soap if the soap in question is firm. But for very soft sosps and creams, it is usable and as soft as all get out.
Oh dear, Lee! The slime pig! I think breaking in boar knots is perhaps the challenge; my Semogue brushes were, they weren't bad but I just preferred other brushes, more comfortable brushes, and so didn't ever get to fully use them properly and get them well and truly at their best.
Hi Mark. Nice shave! I do soak my natural hair brushes, boars included. It seems to help with lathering and then getting soap back out of the brush. In the instances when I didn't soak the brush, I found both of those things more difficult. To be honest, I still prefer synthetics to natural hair. I find them superior in every way considering the variety available and they continue to improve year over year. Thanks for the enjoyable video!
Hi Eric. I must agree that the synthetics these days are fantastic and, there is a lot of variety not just in colour but in how the knot feels and what natural hair it mimicks - it is very, very clever. Cheers.
I usually left my boar brush to soak for a couple of minutes.
Throwback to our previous conversation: tried the PAA blades on two occasions, once in the 6C on plate 3, and another time with the 6S on plate 4 then switched to plate 2 for atg. Overall they gave an OK shave, but was very uncomfortable, they felt tugging and didn't seem to give a great shave. Don't think I'll be using them in the future with the exception of finishing the pack I have. As they say, YMMV.
I expected better from those blades. It has put me off using them, a bit, even though I think they might possibly work better in a different razor, as often is the case. Your description nails it for me - shaved okay but really uncomfortable. Darn it!
That sure is a sexy brush!
Nice one! I've actually put a new synthetic knot into it. It looks even sexier now! Cheers.
Looks like you are well stocked with brushes , shavers , soaps , after shave etc. Years of accumulation .
I am quite well stocked, I must admit. I do try to keep it to a reasonable level, after all it would not be a very entertaining channel if I only had a few items. I do like samples - they take up less room😁
@@FriendshipShaving True.
I really appreciate your description and technique. Would you consider this Parker and chrome plated solid brass razor? Very good , I purchased a Gillette red tip reconditioned razor from a gentleman from Ontario for 20$. Found out the hard way, you must have at least a 3 days growth , before you use a red tip.
Hi Prentiss. Your experience of the Gillette red tip is interesting; I haven't tried one, but found the standard flare tip to be very nice. The Parker felt like quite a few of the old Gillette's in weight, size and shave. It was an easy shave, nice weight and a very clean shave.
Great shave Mark, Yes I soak my Boar Brush also I will have a go-to to see if it works for me, sounds like an interesting soap that and I like the handle on that brush and a nice TTO razor look forward to your box opening on Monday take care and have a great week :-)
Thanks Mark. The week goes so quickly these days, I only seem to blink and it's over. I dyed the handle with some leather dye I had knocking about; it worked well. Take care, mate.
