I always loved this song. It is a very special song for me as I played it for my daughter while I sat with her for 3 weeks and 1 day while she was in hospice care last year. This song brought great comfort and many tears. She made it to our Lord as she passed away on March 9, 2023. It’s been almost one year now. 😪

Written by Gavin and Iain Sutherland, Gavin Sutherland said of the song, "Most people take the song to be about a young guy telling his girl that he's crossing the Atlantic to be with her. In fact the song's got nothing to do with romance or ships; it's an account of mankind's spiritual odyssey through life on his way to freedom and fulfillment with the Supreme Being.”

I saw an interview with one of the Muscle Shoals studio session players, Steve Hackett I think, he said Rod came into the studio and sang this like it was the last song he would ever sing.
He sings at the very top of his register which was out of his comfort zone but has the desired effect.

A huge hit for Rod. It was written by The Sutherland Brothers. We were very lucky growing up in the 60s/70s having music like this as the backdrop to our lives. Rod's first big solo hit was Maggie May. Give it a whirl Harri, I'm sure you'll like it!

8:03 Yes, that bass!! I've noticed a lot of 1970's romantic movie soundtracks had that cool, very active rock bass and drums, mixed in with acoustic guitar picking, and strings, and harpsichords, and all sorts of "non-rock" instruments. Composers like Francis Lai come to mind, with things like the _gorgeous_ 'Snow Frolic' (from 'Love Story'), which has haunted me my whole life. The 70's were special, man. Thanks for this great reaction!

Interesting place to start in Rod Stewart's discography. This album is overlooked by most but his biggest fans. It came after his Faces/Rocker phase but just before his pop star sex fiend phase that evolved into his disco phase. It's my favorite album of his, with a slow side and a fast side. Try something from the other side, maybe "Three Time Loser," or if you want to stay in the slow mode, look into "I Don't Want to Talk About It."

Really really glad your doing Rod.....he's done a few boatloads of absolutely stunning works of musical lyrical art......one of my all time favorite artists. I'd suggest some things to cover but I'm at a loss right now where to begin. As for this .....yeah.....can get deep and spiritual. And having seen Rod "live" many times.....the sea of gently waving lights amongst the crowd was always part of the experience. I can relate to your story.....I was booted out of home at 17 for pretty much the same reason......a bit daunting.....you vrs the universe.....lived on the streets....under freeways....in the woods.....in 70's northern California....one could get away with that as the elements aren't quite so harsh as most places.....good memories.....and trying one's. Glad you made it through to be you. Another spot on reaction 👍🎼👍🎸👍🎹👍🎻👍

Same experience for me. turned 17 at the beginning of senior year in Palmdale California. Left home in February. I just couldn't any more. Step father didn't like my career choice(I wanted to be a chef) though I'm not sure what he expected me to do. I was lucky though, as well as determined. I had a lot of good people on my side. One of the waitresses at work rented me one of her homes with the deposits in installments. Pops tried to get them to fire me by rescinding his permission for me to work. My employer ignored him until he threatened legal action, then they paid a lawyer to help me get emancipated. Then he tried to get the school district to revoke my work experience exemptions, and they told him to pound sand as well, and assisted in my emancipation efforts.

@@stephenmichalski2643 I couldn't find my way into a culinary school. The kitchen I started in was in an...odd...situation. I was in a small town and it was a dinner house/bar on one side/coffee shop on the other, but also attached to a bowling alley. The food side was actually legit, as implausible as that may seem. Prime rib, cut and aged our steaks, made all our soups and gravies in house. Breaded all our seafood except oysters(the supplier had a fantastic product), our veal cutlets and chicken fried steak. made all our own salads. Fries, onion rings, and hash browns came from a supplier, but all top notch. Ran a lunch buffet with roast beef, other specials every weekday. Had a big round table where all the business in the LA County portion of the Valley was conducted. The year I was busing tables, I would take home $20-30 bucks for the lunch shift and another $30-50 at night. So like I say, the place was legit. But still, just a dinner house. Unfortunately, it was run by a rotating group of investors and designed to lose money for them for tax purposes. When the advantages would expire for an investor, they would sell their share to another in their group. Eventually, tax law changed and we wound up with a majority that wanted to make money, and felt lowering the quality of food was the way to achieve that goal. Head chef wasn't having any of it and quit. I didn't get along with his replacement, and the little fuck was constantly threatening to kick my ass. So, into the Corps I went, thinking I could get training there. Turns out I needed to achieve much higher rank to avail myself of that training, and that was NEVER going to happen. I probably could have gotten on as a line cook in one of the hotels in Waikiki, but they didn't pay much and Hawaii, even then(got out in 79) was extremely expensive. So, I went home. Best offer I got was a cat wanting to open a store, wanted me to develop his menus, set up the kitchen and vendors, all of which I could have done still having all my contacts, but he wanted me to do it for $6 bucks an hour. As it turns out, I also don't have much imagination. Anything I set up would have still only been a dinner house serving the food I liked. So I went into construction.

@@andyfletcher3561 .....Andy.....you are frickin AWESOME!!!👍👍😃😃 Great story!!! I missed the culinary school boat initially too....a couple years or so before you got out.....I was pretty much down on my luck.....I remember the night before it turned around....I was livin outta my car...jobless...with about 75 cents to my name....had spent my money to fill car with gas....had applied for a dishwashing job at a French restaurant in Sausalito over looking S.F. Bay....they were paying dishwashers pretty much what cooks in American family type restaurants made....remember I thought it was a typo in the add .....anyways got the job...place was a dream....an old Victorian building....deck....windows over looking the bay....16 room hotel above the restaurant ....all decked out like a plush French bordello ....it was like working in the south of France on the Mediterranean coast.....just postcard picture stuff. Within a matter of months the prep cook quit and I ended up doing that.....I got along well with Madame Deschamp who ran the kitchen.....she was pretty picky about her kitchen staff....for some reason we hit it off really well (her and her husband owned the business) about a year later the head chef quit....everybody moved a slot up and I got to move to the line.....long story short ....after some years after I found myself the head chef....Madame and the other chefs/cooks trained me from the ground up....on the job training in classical French cuisine from a French couple (who went through WW2....damn....Mssr. Deschamp had some stories....that guy was captured by the Germans twice and escaped twice lol) ....in my eye's I went from rags to riches in fairly short order. Anyways......thanks for sharing....great stuff.....share more if you like....you rock....and yeah...Atlantic Crossing is an awesome album....one of my all time favorites. Best to you and Yours SM 👍👍🎼🎼🎸🎸

@@stephenmichalski2643 I worked my way up to my own shift as well. Started as a miscellaneous worker, weeding the parking lot, washing windows, cleaning the bathrooms. Minimum wage, $1.63 an hour. Head dishwasher decided something school related was more important one Saturday so they called me in from the parking lot and gave me shirt and apron. I lived closer, school was block away, and didn't give two shits about the schools hours and time restrictions. Within a month I had his shifts. He'd been there more than a year. I got raises, he didn't. He finally gave when he was reduced to 4hrs on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. It helped that the waitresses loved me. They had their dishes and bus trays empty, and if I saw an empty coffee cup, I filled it. When I moved to nights, sometimes it was boring so I started cooking. Hours flipping a hamburger bun in an egg pan LoL. When I started busing in the dining room, I moved to a split shift.
11-2:30 and back at 6-11. I'd get off at 2:30 and bowl 18 games or so, then come back in and learn to cook. It was either that or go home and get beat or yelled at for SOME reason. Eventually I took over the night shift and a good portion of the prep for the next day. I became pretty well respected in town among my peers and our customers. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, about 1 AM we'd all gather(most of the kitchen staffs of Palmdale and Lancaster) at the Sambo's in Palmdale, many of us having worked together in the same store at different banquets at various times, and give the waitresses hell, who we'd all worked with as well. Very much like Bourdain portrayed his early days(I'm like a year older than he would be) except weed and psychedelics rather than coke. It was a great camaraderie amongst us all, and we took great pride in our work. I laugh when I go into a store and they have 3-4 cooks behind the wheel. I don't much enjoy eating out anymore. I had the honor of working with old school professional waitresses. 10-11 plates on their arms and every plate going to the customer it was supposed to, no time to load up a tray. Unfortunately, I still remember how it all can and should be done. None of this bringing out one customers meal and another's 5-10 minutes later. My first solo shift was a Saturday morning that the head chef somehow managed to forget there was a tournament on the lanes. Opened at 6AM, by 7 I had 80 tickets on the wheel, and that's when 2 tour buses headed to Vegas decided to drop by. I was begging the head waitress to call in one of the other cooks, but she wouldn't. She helped a little when she could, and just kept telling me I was doing fine and to take it one ticket at a time. Our entire menu was available from opening to closing, so some of those orders were dinner. Kind of tough when the rib is still in the walk in and haven't even made the Au Jus yet to bring it up, especially if they wanted it rare LoL. It was certainly a baptism of fire. I think the difference between you and I, and those in the profession today, is we WANTED to be there.

I was a Marine, but I can tell you, my times on ship, 1500-2000 miles away from anything in the Pacific...I've never been more at peace, except in the middle of my two favorite trout streams. We anchored off Midway I believe at night. Got up the next morning and went down to the hanger deck (USS New Orleans, LPH-11) and looked out the elevator deck to see 2 other carriers and all their groups, along with ours. All those ships, all that power concentrated in one place with the sun rising behind, and the raw history of that place bubbling up out of the ocean. That same feeling I get on the east coast near all the battlefields of the Revolution and Civil War. I can't even describe the feelings really, other than invigorating.

Harri, I used to love Rod before he turned into a cabaret singer, in his early days with THE FACES and his solo stuff he was outstanding, what a lot of people don't know is he wrote a lot of his hits himself and doesn't get the songwriting accolades he is due. Now Harri, you spoke about leaving home at an early age, well, I want to recommend the ultimate going back home song, it's by FRANKIE MILLER and although it's about Scotland it will resonate with you , the song is CALEDONIA and it featured on a beer advert in the late 70's. SO HARRI, YOU NEED TO DO THIS FROM ( ROBIN TROWER ) AND HIS ALBUM: LONG MISTY DAYS :) JAMES DEWAR R.I.P :( ON VOCALS AND OF COURSE ROBIN'S INCREDIBLE SOUNDING AND GUITAR PLAYING! IT'S SO SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS :( ROD STEWART WAS NO ROBIN TROWER, THAT'S FOR SURE. ANYWAY, COOL!

Harri, it's more than great for me to find another who gets emotional from music.
I suggest Crosby, Stills, Nash - Southern Cross

I think the play I saw in London based on Rod’s songs was called sailing. It was a pretty awful play I must admit but the music was good.
