Man, you really are going in there. Waiting on the video on how to forge valves at home with common household appliances, or something. Thanks for sharing and huge respect for the "meticulousness" of the whole project. Cheers.
Hi Nice work , When I balance a rod assembly I suspend the small end and weigh the big end and grind the rodcap lengthways In one direction only, until the desired weight is achieved then each rod is stood on end and the over all weight is then done on the top so they all match
Recently got better internet. It's so refreshing to watch this in 1080p60fps holy crap. Your car's already back together right? I think I remember seeing a shot of it on Instagram.
Great stuff! Is it possible that the bolts could lead to the inconsistent weight? My understanding is that the bolts are one time use and the ones you have on there would have to be replaced. So if new bolts are inconsistently weighted it would throw things off? That's of course if you'll be using new bolts and there is a weight difference with the bolts.
How much did you spend on the pistons and who manufactured them? Here in Germany I would go for Mahle since they manufacture pistons and rods for BMW. A set would cost about 730 $ if you buy them online. And when will your crank position sensor video be online, I have the feeling that all of my position sensors are slowly dying which is why my engine is running like a sack of nuts as we say in Germany. I love your videos, keep on going!
I bought aftermarket pistons that were almost certainly made in China. Part of a master kit I bought for $500 that had bearings and all the gaskets and head bolts. I wish I had just bought the pistons alone for $300 because there were problems with some things in the kit and I couldn't use the head gasket (needed thicker one)
Great attention to details. Is it possible that your extra efforts in balancing to the tenths of a gram will help with the dreaded m54 engine harmonics?
I'm a software engineer. I just read a lot and watch a lot of videos and then go out and do it. And I make some mistakes along the way and I tell you guys!
50sKid well thank you very much..I've done so much to my ZHP by watching your videos. Like all e46's mine is also burning oil but I am just going to keep adding oil, I'm too chicken shit to rebuild my engine lol. I'm a military diesel tech but we just replace engines when they go to shit. Your videos are much appreciated.
Ah, I see, I see. Yeah as long as the cutter tool is held to the inside of the piston it wouldn't touch the skirt when the piston was spinning in the lathe. Of course, these pistons have lots of nice material to be able to machine off that way. Wouldn't have been able to do it with the pistons I had though--they had to be done by hand.

ROTFL
Doing your own internal balancing.. Huge man balls
Can't wait for the reassemble videos. It's going to be cool to see it start up.
5-6 more weeks to go
my Brian Crower con rods where the same weight right out the box so that was nice to see. nice video
I've seen some people add the weight of the rings as well, great video as always.
Yeah you're unlikely to get inconsistencies between the weights of the rings, I figure, but you can also do that. Depends how obsessive you are lol

Bravo 50s Kid, I thought you couldnt do it ;)
Loving these videos! Can't wait to see more :)

Yes. Couple more assembly and reinstall videos to go
great work ,awesome, best regrats from Spain friend

The new bolts were basically the same weight
you have to balance the rods with the holes not the external shape of the rod because they are not all the same
Would it be better to balance the pistons with the rings on ?

But your engine is now running fine?
@@MJCGames made in china won't last long

What do you mean by the dreaded engine harmonics?
50sKid the people who suffer from oil pump nuts vibrating off, oil pump shafts shearing, crank walk in extreme cases?
Have you m54b30 pistons?
Jason, what's your daytime job? You know so much about mechanics

Check out my 02Pilot mod video. $3 vacuum hose will solve the oil consumption.
50sKid will do
You sir need a lathe :-)
A lathe? What part of the machining I did would I have used a lathe for?
I use it to blance my pistons. But besides that you would love a lathe
Oh yeah for sure I would but I was just wondering where you'd take off material if you have a piston chucked in a lathe you know?

you gotta balance your bench grinder first :p
Ha, yeah no kidding. I have to hold the table with my foot so it doesn't vibrate its way across the floor!
