This is definitely and underrated Disney movie, it was freaking awesome! Vincent Price was absolutely perfect!
yep
yep
Such a good movie my favorite Disney movie :-)
nice
Well said! Such a fun adventure with some contrasting scenes such as the opening and the voice acting is it good. Love this film.
In regards to the Nostalgia Critic praising Vincent Price's acting:
I remember hearing somewhere that Vincent Price considered this one of his favorite roles to play. You can feel it in both his voice and in Ratigan's motions, because he got completely into the character; most of Ratigan's quirks and movements were directly transposed from footage of Price acting out the role in the studio booth. So when Doug says it feels like Price is right in the role, it really was about as close as you could get to being inside an animated feature.
Thank you so much for this!
one of it was his favorite
There are few actors that are so in tune with their roles. Vincent Price was one of those great actors.
Yup that’s true I was about to comment about this myself but apparently this person beat me to it…. Oh well
It was said Price enjoyed roles like this, because younger kids could be introduced to him the same goes for his role in the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo
"Mommy, that's scary as fuck."
I lost it.
I even loved his sarcasm before that.
He only voiced “Vincent” 4 years earlier and was a Disney demon. RESPECT PRICE FOR HIS ROLE!
The critic is right, just by Vincent's performance, you can hear that he's having the time of his life voicing Ratigan!
yep
Fun fact: the animation team studied his recording session and based the character off his performance
Also, price’s favorite role
This film was one of the central pillars of my childhood. I wore this film out. I liked Aladdin and Lion King all right, but this and Rescuers Down Under were my favorite Disney films back in the day.
Same here. My parents have stories where I would only go to sleep if they agreed to put this movie on. Definately in my childhood top 10 movies.
+Duke Spubber
Exactly! I would also add to my list Atlantis, and The first Rescuers. But, I can definitely understand where you're coming from. My brother and I LOVED this movie and we still do.
I can agree with you their however I still love Aladdin and The Lion King more The Rescuers Down Under is pretty good to though especially the animation
Amen. This was also a central part of my childhood (with American Tail as a closer number two, oddly enough). However, more interesting was the fact that my father LOVED this movie. He would watch it once a week. He actually saw it in theatres when it came out, just because he thought the Ratigan character was extraordinary...
Fun fact: Basil is named after Basil Rathbone who played Sherlock in the popular 1940's movies. Basil Rathbone even plays the adult human Sherlock's voice in this cartoon
Archival audio
Also fun fact: in one of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories - The Adventure of Black Peter -, Holmes uses the name Basil as an alias.
@@Sweetpeafan oh wow! That is cool to know!
May I remember you how dark that movie is? I remember watching it as a kid just fine but wow,Rattigan literally murders one of his henchman because he called him a rat while drunk. I remember watching the Scene again a while ago where Basil and sidekick are trapped and about to die. Wow,the twisted pleasure with how detailed and playful Rattigan had arranged his execution device and the depression Basil gets in..it really sucked me in.
Thats my second favorite scene in the entire film.
I still fast forward when the henchmen is fed to the cat even though you don't see anything. But I just can't watch it lol
Dude! Let’s talk about the bar fight! That has to be one of the most brutal brawls in cinema history! Just look at the weapons involved. Clubs, knives, chairs, chair legs, table legs, revolvers, bottles, bare fists, and don’t forget, that one crazy s.o.b. had an axe! As a kid, I thought it was funny, as an adult, I think, man, that is violent! Still an awesome movie.
"It is your typical little mouse adventure.." right at the moment when sexy mouse strippers are on screen.
I always got confused seeing that when i was younger for some reason
Till this day, this is my favorite Disney movie
same
Hromovlad1 it’s mine too
The Great Mouse Detective is one of my favorite Disney movies. I've had a crush on Basil since I was a child and to this day, I still do.
Crushing hard ladies. But, seriously, it's really hard to not be attracted to Basil. Like, he's so damn appealing. Also, when Doug describes the main character of an animated movie and makes him sound like the 10th Doctor.
I'm guessing relative intelligence of male Disney protagonists ranged from Hercules to this mouse.
Depends how much you count The kid from Meet the Robinssons or The dad from Honey, i shrunk the kids.
This fucking movie always made me feel like I was dangling over a cliff until the end. Even when it seems slow, there is always something to be worried about. That's the result of great characters and one of Disney's most diabolical villains ever, imo. The clocktower scene is one of my go-to terrifying Disney moments.
There's a reason why Ratigan is still my favorite Disney Villain and Basil is one of my favorite Disney Heroes (only the Beast beat him out sadly). This movie pretty much saved Disney from bankrupted and who help set up the Disney Renaissance.
Uuuh, wasn't it "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "The Little Mermaid" that set up the Disney Renaissance (which was early 90s) ?
This is not to take anything away from the "Great Mouse Detective".
It was among my favorite Disney films growing up. But I recall it doing just "okay" at the box office and being released in '86
So not responsible for the Renaissance.
Brady Hartsfield The Great Mouse Detective was considered a Box Office Success compared to Black Cauldron and had Mouse Detective failed, Disney was about to go bankrupt. Disney planned on shutting down their animation studio had the movie failed.
As if that bat jump scare at the start wasn't scary enough, they do it AGAIN with him pooping out of a toy stroller later on. This is one of my favorite Disney movies but those parts had me shitting bricks as a kid XD
This made me love Sherlock Holmes. While not a Sherlock Holmes film it feels like one.
Sly Cooper That's the idea.
This was my intention to mysteries
Actually one of the better Disney films of that era, I loved everything about it as a kid.
I'm so happy to see people loving this film! It wasn't my childhood, and I only discovered it when I was older, but I ADORED it. I loved how violent it was, how fun the villain and hero were. It was just FUN. I love it.
Can we get a sequel to this? In a world of pointless Disney sequels, this is a movie where I wouldn't mind if they made a sequel to it.
Apparently there were talks of making this a series of DTV movies or a TV show, but it got scrapped and elements eventually found its way into Rescue Rangers.
+Roger Puzzitiello That would be great the film even sets one up at the end so it would make sense (as long as it's done right that is).
+Roger Puzzitiello I remember seeing a comic, at my cousin's house, that was a sequel to this movie.
I pretty much only remember that Ratigan used his jacket as a parachute and survived the fall from the movie. And that Ratigan's cat got attacked by a fish. I think the comic had a lot to do with a mouse sultan too.
+Teddingham Yeah I have the comic it was released here in Norway almost at the exact same time the movie was released, I remember when I was a kid how I loved this movie and my dad picked up the comic for me.
The comic continues the story and it's a shame it was not made into an animated adventure.
I will say that there are technically sequels. It takes a lot of liberties like all Disney films, but this WAS based on the book series Basil of Baker Street.
This movie is great. And it doesn't rely on a love or family story to be good and get us invested. It gives us good characters, an amazing villain (with a scary sidekick), an incredible protagonist, and an interesting mystery to go for. Not to mention the great animation. One of my favs!
My first Disney in a cinema. Perfectly done, with great villain songs... and the cabaret scene too.
Basil and Ratigan are awesome, but that just speaks to any Sherlock fan who loves Holmes and Moriarty, one of the biggest hero villain duo in literature.
My sister actually became a Sherlock Holmes fan because of this movie. She and her best friend even refer to each other as Holmes and Watson.
I'm a big Sherlock Holmes fan and I read so many of the original storys. So when I watched it, I watched it as an adaptation. And I have to say, this Sherlock Solmes incarnation is one of my favorites ( I watched a lot) And that's not because it was extremely loyal to the storys ( It's loosely based on one but they pretty much make it their own ) This is great because Basil is such a perfect Sherlock Holmes. This movie really understood the source material, the characters, the storys and actually did capture the feeling of them. There were so many details that made me as Fan so happy, espeaciallly that they named the detective basil, after Basil Rathbone. Sometimes it's a little bit too much for a Sherlock Holmes story, but that's understandable, after all it's for kids and it still has its own disney touch. So I, a fan of both, Disney and Sherlock Holmes, loved that movie.
I hear you there. I liked this fine as a kid. As an adult, I grew to enjoy Sherlock Holmes. Recently, I re-watched The Great Mouse Detective and realized that I love it more now, than I did back then, due to my admiration of the Sherlock Holmes character.
This needs a full review if for no other reason than just how faithful it is to the source material. The interactions, friendship, and general character displayed by Basil and Dawson is the second best adaptation of the dynamic between Holmes and Watson I've ever seen. (The first being the decades long run of the Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke PPS Mystery series.) The movie also has a ridiculous number of easter eggs for Holmes fans like Basil Rathbone voicing Sherlock Holmes and the inclusion of Toby.
+Patrick Shields I feel I must respectfully disagree with your opinion.
@@patrickshields5251 Obvious troll is obvious.
I was going to ask if anyone has read the books. So you recommend them?
This is one of my all time favorite Disney films
The story in this movie was really well put together, and I think I appreciate that even more watching as an adult than I did when I was a child -- there's even a legitimate reason given for the villain to create an elaborate death trap instead of just killing the heroes then and there.
Also, unlike many other Disney films set in England, the characters actually have British accents, which makes a nice change from the American accents that dominated Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh and The Sword in The Stone -- even Robin Hood had very few English accents in it, and The Rescuers Downunder had, what, three Australian accents? none of the human characters sounded Aussie at all.
Anyway, yeah, good movie.
Robin Hood was like 50/50, this one still has some fake british accents
Peter Pan is forgivable because the kids in Neverland are from places around the world, so they wouldn't necessarily be British.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE WITH A BURNING PASSION! Basil and Ratigan are AMAZING, and I legit want a sequel with Basil, as long as they can stay true to his personality xD
Definitely one of my Top 10 favorite Disney movies!
This was my favorite Disney film growing up. It's what sparked my fascination with the Victorian Era. This is maybe the one film I actually wish Disney would make into a CGI/Live action remake.
This movie is my favorite Disney movie
Meganecraz mine too
My favorite (and most-rewatched) movie as a kid.
This underrated film actually saved Disney from bankruptcy after the disastrous box office performance of The Black Cauldron, and sealed the importance of the company's animation department. This film pretty much jump-started the Disney Renaissance
alexiaNBC One of the many reasons that I love this film.
I recently was in Walt Disney World and I wor e a basil t-shirt. I thought people would be asking me what's that but instead I had a lot of people stop me to say they loved it and where did I get it. It did really make me happy that so many great mouse detective fans are there
The beginning was scary as fuck for me as a kid. Looking back on it now as a teenager, I can maturely label it as 'The child friendly version of a home invasion'.
My sister loves Sherlock but she refuses to watch this movie and I'm like "DUDE ITS SHERLOCK AS A MOUSE!"
that makes no sense
Sounds like a hardcore fan of Sherlock Holmes
This film is such an underrated classic, I really wish it would get more attention
This is one of my favorites
By far my favorite Disney film
Next to the Rescuers Down Under, this is perhaps the most underrated Disney film ever made.
The scene where Basil is getting the shit beaten out of him is one of the most disturbing and intense scenes in a Disney film, at least I think so, it's just so damned brutal! when he gets hurt, you can see the sharp pain he is in, it's just disturbing... and it's fuckin' great
thats literally my favorite scene in the entire movie. I was rooting for Ratigan to kill Basil.
yeah, Vincent price is a great voice actor, he used to do radio serials
Unfortunately, Vincent Price has been dead for years. Fortunately, he left behind a great legacy through his career.
You can see why the legendary Richard Williams hired him to voice Zigzag in The Thief and the Cobbler.
Thanks for saving Disney Mouse Detective
Hands down one of my all time favorites. I loved this movie as a kid and still do to this day.
One of my favorites. ^_^ That clock tower fight was *terrifying.* And a Basil statuette is the trigger for entering Darkwing Duck's secret garage!
0:32 MOMMY, that's scary as FUCK!
This film came out before I was even born and I love watching it over and over.
A lot of the stuff Doug says about Price and Ratigan you could say about Alex Hirsch and Bill Cipher. That character wouldn't be near as awesome without such a great voice actor. I wish Doug talked about him more in his list of best GF episodes.
Ironically, Alex is the creator
This film is easily one of my favorite movies of all time, and I kinda did get me into sherlock holmes as well. I wish more people could have known about this.
And Henry Mancini has such a delightfully bouncy score that also has that brilliant menace when Basil faces off with Ratigan inside Big Ben
This is a truly impressive film. Disney's best film since Flight Of The Navigator.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies and one of the few Disney movies I had on DVD
This film exposed me to Vincent Price as a kid. Apparently he really loved his role as Ratigan and how much the character enjoys being the villain.
This was and will still be my favorite childhood movie.
This is my favorite Dark Age Disney film.
I am just in LOVE with this movie. 🐭🐭🐭💕💕💕
2:23 to 2:36 - I got the exact same reaction with Jennifer Anniston as Annie Hughes in The Iron Giant. Her voice acting was so brilliant I never once thought 💭 of Rachael from Friends. I didn't even know it was her
I didn't watch this movie as a kid, but I watched it a few months ago and I love it so much
Nobody's going to talk about the burlesque scene?
I know, right? When I first watched this movie, I was honestly shocked what I was seeing. I felt how I felt while watching hunchback. But I ended up loving both movies.
Eh, Disney was in its "dark edgy phase", with Black Cauldron as the climax. This movie may be dark, but compared to Black Cauldron, it's CareBears.
The what now?
Were some animators working through some issues perhaps?
This has to be my absolute favourite Disney movie. Even as a kid, even though it scared me, the opening captured me. God it's amazing!
You...er..you don't get laid very often do you Patrick.
you weren't hugged as a kid were you.
Wonderful movie, and I think that Vincent Price played one of the most underrated Disney villains EVER. Rattigan, the world's greatest criminal mind.
I found Flushed Away to be a great Aardman version of this type of story.
I used to own this as a little kid. I think I still do.
*I WOULD ALWAYS SKIP THE OPENING!*
Jesus, that fucking scared me. Heck, I still find it a little unnerving now.
I saw this movie when I was little and I haven't watched it since, because of the fucking bat in the beginning. That's scared the shit out of me!
This is one of my favorite movies. I was so afraid as a kid, but I would watch this since I loved sherlock Holmes :)
This was my favourite film as a child... now the source material for my PhD thesis is the Sherlock Holmes books and adaptations.
That's so cool. Are you also including this movie?
@valerianmandrake Thanks for asking. Yes, ill be using it to highlight how latter adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes and Watson characters were influenced by earlier adaptations more than the written stories.
This film uses a recording from one of the original 1940s radio broadcasts, is a wholly original work using characters linked to the source material, it characterises their "Watson" in a slightly different manner to other adaptations but is most clisely linked to Nigel Bruce'sportrayal, and uses a mix of British and American accents for heros and villains.
@@badateverything5392 Nice! It's cool to see "Holmes scholars" out there. Yeah Dawson is clearly based on the "bumbling" Nigel Bruce character, which I don't like much actually. I enjoy the Watsons in BBC Sherlock or even the RDJ films. The later Watsons seem more capable and they also challenge Holmes more, rather than just existing to admire him...
I think Basil is a more interesting character than Holmes, though I LOVE Sherlock Holmes. I actually have a framed large print of one of the Sidney Paget drawings in my living room. 😅
@@valerianmandrake
Yeah, I agree, they weren't that good, but these were highly influential.
My thesis primarily focuses on how Holmes and Watson have been used for propagandistic purposes throughout the years.
Chapter One: Promotion of military, Empire, Brittonic supremacy, and the role of men and women within that society (namely, put women in control of their finances so the men in their lives can't abuse them, and men to fight for the Empire but recognising the cost (one of the soldiers suffers from what can only be described as PTSD).
Chapter Two: the Challenges of adapting a source material that uses a first person narrator that doesn't do much in the narrative.
Chapter Three: the role of Watson when there is no longer a need for his narration in the silent film era. How Holmes and Watson have traditional 1900s values throughout the era.
Chapter Four: WWII and the promotion of the allied war effort. How Watson is to be a respected doctor worthy of being listened to, and helpless in older age and in need of help.
Chapter Five: The use of the Holmes-Hero and Watson-Infant in the promotion of changing values in the wake of the social revolution of the 60s.
Chapter Six: The rejection of the previous characterisations of Holmes and Watson, instead making Watson the-hero/caregiver and Holmes the brilliantly intelligent/socially incapable anti-hero, in the promotion of representation and equality.
I am also going to discuss the specific propaganda techniques used throughout/ I wish I could just write about this movie instead.
This movie will always be known as 'Basil The Great Mouse Detective' for me - Guess its a UK thing.
Freaking love this movie, so underrated, I actually watched this movie a few months ago and I’m surprised I didn’t see it sooner.
This was by far my favorite movie as a kid. Thanks for taking me back NC!
Vincent Price as the bad guy? I'm sold
Thank you for introducing me to this movie I really enjoyed it thank you critic!
this has always been my favorite Disney movie. seeing my favorite book character turned into my favorite animal was amazing as a child. now that I'm grown I see that Basil is different from Sherlock, but in a good way.
This is my favorite disney film. When I was a little kid I had no idea who Sherlock was but now that I know who Sherlock is I fell in love with this movie even more. Its just a brilliant movie.
The opening scene of this movie is still the most terrifying thing I seen from disney to this day. I still can't see that part.
This movie is actually on Netflix!
This is important, because this movie needs to be seen. Love it.
Yeah, I've actually watched a lot of the lesser-known Disney movies including Atlantis both of The rescue down under movies and a lot more, all on Netflix!
with all the fidget close ups included!
It is?! YES!
@@snapmyneck8818 well it's not on Netflix no more actually it's on disney plus
My Brother And I Remember Seeing The Great Mouse Detective When We Were Both Still Little It's Amazing
If it weren't for you I would not have discovered this movie thank you critic
Oh yeah I’m also one of those people. I watched early 2019 and I loved it.
Exactly the same with me
It's funny cause it's these sort of Disney movies that I actually love way more than the more well known ones. I love The Great Mouse Detective, The Sword in the Stone, The Rescuers Down Under and The Aristocats way more than movies like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty. I just loved the movies from the dark age of Disney, even the Black Cauldron, these movies had more adventure, higher stakes, and bigger climaxes.
I always visualized Price acting hammy behind the mic (I'd like to see recording footage if it exists). Ratigan was his favorite role.
Apparently, in the recording booth, he'd do a lot of really exaggerated poses that the animators would then incorporate into Ratigan. At least, according to IMDB.
I loved this movie as a kid!
I wish it got more attention than it does
I remember hearing about this film while watching commercials for it on one of the acquired Disney tapes when I was 8. I then got the privilege to see the film on Toon Disney a year later and then in 2012 again on Disney Junior. It was epic both times.
will always be my favorite Disney movie! sherlock + Vincent price !!
Never knew it was Vincent Price!
Drake I did
This movie makes me happy
I love this movie. I agree that the main hero and villain are perfect and bounce off each other beautifully.
The environments are beautiful- from foggy London to the toy shop and Basil's home. Even the simple environments have so much feel to them with the colors and shadowing.
Man, I loved this movie as a kid. I loved it even more when I grew up, learned who Sherlock Holmes was, and could catch a lot of the references, lol.
Oho man, I remember this. I have it on VHS, and when I was thirteen or so I would play it over and over again until my siblings got sick of it. I just never got tired of watching Basil and Ratigan's animation blend flawlessly with the animation. I loved how Basil was an egotistical detective who was a bit of a jerk at times. I loved how he was sharp and alert at some times, and yet so clueless at others. I loved watching Ratigan be giddy with delight because he's just enjoying himself so much. I loved his song, and the part where he feeds a henchman to his cat. it was just perfect.
As a kid the only criticism I thought about was that the robot queen plan was silly, but even then I didn't really think it was a problem. I could see that it was silly, but I could easily just accept it and enjoy the story for what it was.
I heard that Vincent Price loved singing the song, "Goodbye, So Soon," so much that he had it played it at his funeral.
I absolutely loved this one as a kid. Watched it over and over.
Doug said he couldn't separate Vincent Price's voice from Ratigan. I felt the same way about Zizgzag the grand vizier.
This is one of my all time favorites
I Love this movie
So Cute 🙏💕
I like how they had a scene where basil was playing his violin at the same time of Sherlock. It kinda made it seem like they were breaking the 4th wall in a clever way
The clock tower scene scared the shit out of me as a kid. Now that I think about it I’m actually surprised this film got a G rating. It’s pretty dark at parts and a bit creepy at times too.
I think someone once compared Basil and Rattigan's relationship to a pair of ex-lovers and I've never been able to get that thought out of my head.
This movie WAS my childhood. I loved it so much I made up a extra character that looked like me and I acted like I was in the movie. I fucking loved it. xD
They should have made this into a TV show
Fidget the Bat is the reason that I had to keep my closet door as a child. He was terrifying. This was a great movie.
happy 35th anniversary the great mouse detective!!! :3
Surprisingly as a kid, this was easily one of the first Disney films I remember watching, and this was a movie mum bought from a supermarket that was on sale when I was a little kid.
Thinking about it now, I grew up watching Disney animations I don't think a lot of people might have seen before (might I add I'm referring to people I know in real life xD)
"The Great Mouse Detective" is a great animated movie and it was referring to "Sherlock Holmes" stories with little mice. If you think the Robert Downey Jr. version or BBC's "Sherlock" TV series, this is the best Disney "Sherlock Holmes" version that you will enjoy. Also, yes Vincent Price was fantastic and he nailed his character pretty awesome with that classic voice. Overall, great mystery movie.
Until I heard the reference to this movie in Doug's Thief and the Cobbler review, I had no idea that Vincent Price was Ratigan. The more you know.
yesssssssss! this is the only movie my sister made me watch the vhs of over and over that I don't hate with a passion.
