@@shadymaint1 i don't like the guy at all, but china is the reason for most of the shortages right now, not the president. about a year ago some Australian politician suggested there should be an investigation on where/how exactly the virus broke out in China. a few days later China banned the import of Australian coal...which powers 75% of their power plants. after their reserves ran out, they've been having to do systematic blackouts to conserve power and many factories have gone into "manual mode" which is literally bolting handles onto the sides of machines to turn them by hand. the power conservation requirements are also why they cracked down on crypto miners, though under the guise of helping the environment.
as for the oil shortages, there isn't one. the shortage is coming from lack of the additive chemicals that are required to be in the oil for the current CK-4 standard. add that together with lack of semi drivers, the chemtool factory fire recently, and the fuel line shut down last year because of hackers, and you get a back log of orders that have to be filled while new orders are still coming in. that equals high demand, high prices, and shortages for anyone thaty didn't alrady have an order in.

Everyone should know basic automobile maintenance. 90% of regular maintenance can be doine at home with a basic tool set. Ratchet, sockets, breaker bar, screwdrivers, pliers, allen wrenches, a pry bar, a linear force applicator (hammer) and a drain pan. Those tools would cover you for oil changes, brake pad replacement (rotors as well unless they're of the old school with bearings and grease inside), air filter, any light bulbs (inside or out).

That's how most lube techs deal with any car that has the Ring of Fire if they don't have an oil filter socket. Pull the plug, pop a pair of holes in the can, let them both drain then use the holes to twist the filter out without burning your hands.

The spinning ratchet effect is angular momentum. When on the armature of the electric motor of the ratchet is spinning. When you let go of the whole tool (including the tiger) the electric brake engages and this transfers the angular momentum of the armature to the stator so the tool spins -until you catch it and the rest of the momentum is transferred to your hand. But there isn't enough force to spin Ray.
Working as a diesel tech for a while, took an old rounded out screwdriver and ground it down to a beefy icepick. Puncture the filter at the bottom, pull the pan plug and do everything else while you wait for it to drain. Saves a lot of oil ingestion.

This video was awesome. Basic oil changes can be very boring but you were able to keep my attention through the whole thing, easily. Thank you for the amount of work you do on these videos and for giving us mechanics a good name by doing the best job you can.
One thing that we do at work when changing diesel engine oil is we either use a welding hammer or just a tapered punch bit on our air hammer and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter in the middle and let the filter drain before taking it off. It makes the job a lot easier and whole lot less mess. Granted in this oil change scenario you didn't have quite the amount of room that you would have needed probably.
yep yep, that's what we did at the diesel shop I worked at. Basically anything pointy that you can give a couple wacks with a hammer. I made mine out of a screwdriver I ground to a pointy point. And punch the hole before you loosen the filter. We also pre-filled the filter before installing. Surprised he didn't do that.
I bought a new 2001 F350 Lariat 4x4 to pull our 5th wheel trailer. I always changed the oil every 4000 mile and had the transmission flushed every 18000 miles. I know that is a bit of over kill, but I never had one issue with the truck (other than the fact it was too heavy to go off roading). I always used Rotella and did it myself, and it was still expensive.
$130 sounds like a fair deal, DIY they would be looking at $80 just for the oil.
Some people would bitch if you hung them with a new rope. :)
Lets go Brandon. LOL
Here in Canada it costs around 150$ for 12 qts of synthetic plus 20$ for the filter for gas engines. It would be around 15-20$ more for diesel oil and filter. That is all just price of product
@stolenelection I agree with the pretty good deal doing it yourself. Bad thing for this one (and myself) is the 7.3 capacity and oil type. It’s roughly 14-15 qts when I change mine. Running rotella t6 which is a pretty standard synthetic diesel oil it’s roughly 20-25 a gallon depending on when and where I buy, unless I can scoop up a 5 gallon one and it’s a bit cheaper. I usually have around 100 in supplies with oil and filter etc.
I don’t personally see what they are complaining about on price by having someone else do it, but that’s just my opinion really. Guess their opinion was it was too much lol

Not like Ive neglected them either. Pretty religiously change the oil every 3500-4000 miles. Those motors literally run forever tho! Unfortunately the rest of the truck starts falling apart after 350,000 miles
Physics lesson time! The "centrifugal force" demo at 4:17 is actually a demonstration of angular momentum- the little motor in that ratchet is spun up and gets a load of momentum, and when you shut it off, it wants to keep spinning. The motor ends up pulling the case along with it, either through friction in some place or a permanent magnet in the case of a brushless motor, and causes the whole ratchet body to spin.
P.S. Centrifugal force is an ix-nay on the force-ay list as far as most physics, since it's seen as an imaginary force. You "feel" centrifugal force when you spin a bucket of water around you, but that "force" pulling the bucket away from you is basically just the normal force, a reaction to your own centriPETAL force
Well said.
Although it is correct to refer to centrifugal force in an inertial reference frame. Just sayin...

Ray, I have done that job on my 2000 F250 many times with the same sort of mess just about every time😂. Since I am not on the clock, I take a bit longer but less mess by punching a hole in the bottom of the filter and letting it drain that way. Much better than having oil run down the outside. That big filter holds a lot of oil so I partial prefill the new one before installing it.
I really should get some new drain plug washers. I’ve gotten away with using the old one so far. On the other hand, if it ain’t broke….don’t fix it.😂
I am surprised that he didn't prefill the filter. There are some vehicles where one can't because the filter attaches at a non-vertical angle, but where on can I think it is better to prefill so that one gets oil pressure up quicker.

Pretty sure the wrench spinning like that is due to conservation of angular momentum, which is a really cool physics thing- it's the same reason spacecraft can control their orientation (in basically the same way you showed) by spinning heavy disks really fast. Speeding them up and slowing them down allows the spacecraft to rotate without using fuel.
Although your explanation of angular momentum is spot on, I think you are over thinking it. The part of the tool spinning perpendicular to the orientation of the tool may not be causing this. There is a vertical component of the mechanism that spins the half-inch drive and that, when it stops, causes the rest of the too to continue rotating along the same plane.

Great job! I have a 2002 F250 4X4 Crew Cab w/ the 7.3L at 247K miles. It takes 15 qts to do an oil change. So $130 for a shop to do it is a steal!! One more tip about removing the large oil filters on these 7.3's is to take a 16D nail and punch a hole in the bottom of it prior to removal to drain the oil from within it. Takes care of two things: relieves the pressure inside the filter making the spin-off easier and then there is no mess when it comes off since the oil has drained from it!!
As someone else suggested, on filters like these to avoid the big mess, punch a hole on the bottom and let it drain. And do it after you break it free, just in case it is stuck.
Hope you do realise dropping the oil drain plug was Canadian Karma payback, merry Xmas

Ray, I’m a diesel mechanic, you make me laugh about you aversion diesel oil. We are all mechanics, I just choose to work in the men’s department. But you are correct about the magical powers of diesel oils ability to morph into unseen locations. Keep up the videos.
$130 for an oil change on a 7.3 is a steal, last time I had to do it on one of mine it was over $150 and that was back on 2001. I miss that sound of that drone the beast makes under load and at idle, it could be my white noise when I sleep.

Oh my hat! 14.2 liters of oil. I too would be upset at the cost of the service. Oh wait. If I was driving a 7.3l vehicle. I would not be complaining about the cost of service. 🤦🏼

138k miles on a 2002 7.3L? Sounds like someone's retirement gift to themselves.
How many selves?
I have a 1997 with 126k. 7.3 of coarse.
Or they don't use the largest, heaviest vehicle they own to go everywhere. A person who is comfortable with the size of their genitalia might consider a vehicle like that to simply be a tool (and, therefore, only drive it when it happens to be the best tool for the job).
Got a 2004 with 147k. Only used to pull our 5th wheel around.
My firehouse has a 2001 expedition with a 7.3L. 29,000 miles. Change oil & all filters yearly. Runs great.
Just a suggestion if you don't want to make a mess with the oil anymore just drive a screwdriver up through the bottom of the filter and let the filter drain before unscrewing it. My wife and I love watching your channel.
130 for a diesel service and he's upset? I used to work in a tire/lube shop and that was standard. The only time it got cheaper was if you got your tires there, then rotations were free so it knocked off 20 bucks
new to the channel. really like the dose of what really goes through a mechanic's mind. everything is not going to be perfect
Ray, that's called gyroscopic precession. (The twisting motion of your electric ratchet) If you spin the socket in the other direction, the tool will rotate the other way. I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them.
Here's how I change the oil filters without making a mess if the filters are accessible. 1. Loosen the filter. Do not break the seal on the gasket. You just want to be able to spin it off by hand after draining. 2. Punch a hole in the bottom of the filter to let it drain into the bucket. 3. After the filter is empty, hold your finger over the hole and spin it off by hand. I do big trucks so the filters can be quite heavy and hot if full of oil. It is much lighter and cooler when empty so it is easier to handle and you can rotate it some to get it out of tight places without worrying about spilling the oil out of the top of it. This may not work for some trucks due to the location of the filter or filters.
You made it amusing good sir lol. And, hearing the banter of the others in the shop as well in the background made it seem more real not staged. Good Job!
FYI, I think the spinning electric wrench is the Conservation of Angular momentum. Not centrifugal force. Also, I've binged watched most of your stuff over the past week. Very informative!
Absolutely correct. w1*I1 = w2*I2
I’d have told dude to do his own oil change if the price was too high. Gotta love cheap people.
LOL. Being cheap is why I do my own work.
@@christheother9088 Me too. I have nothing wrong with being cheap. Just don’t tell a skilled mechanic that his prices are too high! 🤣🤣 merry Christmas 🎄
He has no actual need for a diesel. He feels a man MUST drive a big diesel truck. He also cries every time he fills up on fuel and gets oil changes.
He'd actually make a profit by selling the F-250 and buying a used Civic, pocketing the rest to go towards therapy to figure out why he has such a bruised ego for buying a civic.
Fun trick for diesels, take the box the filter comes in and set it in the pan under the drain plug, drops right in the box and no mess I'll send a video soon
So in Florida gas is approx $3.50 , here in the U.K its approx $7.30 . Love the videos, not too long. And told at a good pace. Like the fact you drop hints and tips in.
yep good old UK for crap diesel prices
Apple vs Oranges.
I had the exact truck, except the regular extended cab. Drove it for 13 years until I traded it for a 2016 F350 Powerstroke. Should have kept the '02. It was the only vehicle I ever had that needed me to tighten the oil filter more than a good firm hand tight. It would leak if I didn't give it a quarter turn with a strap wrench.
Got a 2001 F350 dually 7.3 use it to pull camper around the country to do pipeline just a 28ft toy hauler washer and dryer deep freezer in back hotels cost to much. Don't even know it's back there Will hang onto as long as possible
Also, if you're changing a diesel's oil for 100 while PAYING someone to do it, that's not a "rip off" that's a bargain. Most of the filters are in the 20 dollar (or more) range and oil is 8-10 dollars. 15w40 conventional t3 is a little less at places like Walmart, but it will still be over 100 for just the materials.
When I use to work at oil field rental. My job was maintenance of the semi trucks. We would tap a hole in the bottom of the old oil filter with a ice pick. To drain the oil without it spilling all over.
Love the 8-second dipstick pull. My Ram has the same and it's always clumsy putting it back in.
That's what she said....
You had me going after the start-up with the clicking/pinging!! Good joke Ray! I love your video's keep them coming!! Keep up the great work!!

My diesel takes 9+ gallons and yes I buy the good stuff, and change it often.
The filter holds a Gallon by itself

Hey Ray, love the channel and you’re a good, honest wrench.
Little tip - was a heavy diesel mechanic for years, vertical filter on these, before spinning it off, punch and hammer a drain hole in bottom of filter to drain before spinning off. Also best to fill new filter 3/4 or more with new oil before installing, picks the pressure up quicker on the start and usually won’t be low on level check. Diesel drain oil does have a mind of it’s own - one of those questions of the universe.
Customer shouldn’t gripe about cost, try 14 GALLONS, two oil filters every month @ 12 - 14 k miles for a Cat, Cummins or Detroit - $$$$$
Keep up the good work!!!
The tapping to make it sound like rod knock was just hilarious 13.5 quarts of oil and a filter and she be good For another 150k miles 🤣 the oil filling skills at the end was just perfect great work As always ray love the commentary like Eric O just hilarious 😂 @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I like the design of the oil filter being hidden behind the engine . Nice and protected
For the amount of engine oil and the filter going on that truck, that cost does sound about right. If the customer really wanted to save money on that they would do the engine oil change and filter themselves which everyone should learn how to do themselves.
I'm curious whether the oil was synthetic or not. Even if conventional that's at least $60 in just oil and another $10 for a filter. An hour labor for the oil change and the rotation isn't all that bad. If they're using better oil then it's an unbelievable deal.
Yes that is a good deal. I’m a tractor trailer diesel mechanic and our oil changes range from 360 to 480 dollars
I have a 7.3 and you're correct. It's impossible to walk away remotely clean when doing anything on this thing.
That’s why I do my own oil change, average cost is around $60.
Another advantage of doing your own oil change is you won’t have to deal with unethical mechanics
Someone called an unethical mechanic?
Still worth taking it to a mechanic every few oil changes you do so they can visually inspect other parts of the cars underside.
Current price on Rotella T at non Walmart retail is 18-22 a gallon. Filter is 7-18 depending on brand. Not doing one of these for less than 70 doing it yourself unless youre using real crap supplies. At which point, its costing you far more than its saving in terms of wear and fuel.
@@alewers3326 I use chevron oil, and motorcraft oil filter, average cost is $60-75 dollars, takes around 30 minutes, god bless dieseltechron for teaching us how to be self reliant, rip
I also like doing my own oil changes because 1) I know good synthetic oil is used, and is the right viscosity. Some shops get in such a hurry that they over/underfill it very easily. 2) I know a quality oil filter is used. Not a generic cheap filter. 3) I know the old oil has been drained completely, as I have the time. In some shops that are in too big of a hurry, they may not get all the old oil out. Lastly, I had a friend who had an oil change done at a dealership, and they got oil all over the top of the engine, causing it to smoke terribly. He took it back and they power washed the oil off. Not an ideal way to do an oil change.
That's a nice truck, engine sounds crisp. For nearly 20 yrs old that's a very well aged machine and probably now worth nearly what it was new.
I enjoy watching you do your work, especially since I'm 88 thumbs when it comes to working on cars. I can do basic repairs but there's always blood involved. I do great finish work and flooring without bleeding but automotive is not my forte. Lol I like how you find the best way to get a job done.
Ray I'm a truck tech . in Canada that was a cool cold start . just a trick we use for diesel oil changes punch a hole in bottom of filter . No mess
The most important services to perform are, hose clamps rotation, flush the blinker fluid, repacking muffler bearings and above all else changing the air in your tires.
Aren't you funny?
You forgot re-plastering the firewall. Turn in your papers newb.
The 7.3 usually takes 14....never seen one that takes 12 or one that takes a 12.5 or 14.5....normally I agree with the dry filter because of the way the oil system is designed however on a full sized pickup truck diesle and larger the filter should always be prefilled because of that turbo...the turbo is what get the oil first and if it runs dry even for a 1/2 second it's not good...had a fellow technician that didn't believe in prefilling diesle oil filters and it nearly bankrupted our shop in free snails
That is the funniest sentence I’ve ever heard
You had me when tapping the wrench on startup!
Dirty trick🤣
Oh, I had fun on the oil change. Nice monologues Ray, you have a gift👍
Tip to try, with a long (6-12") pointed punch put a hole in the bottom side of the filter before starting to remove, let the oil drain out into the oil tray then unscrew the filter as normal (note the oil comes out sideways place the tray carefully), with an empty filter you get no oil over the top or onto you. Nice videos thanks. (GB)
Nice to hear the appreciation for the last good engine International provided to Ford.
Thanks Ray I enjoyed the video, I believe the customer got a pretty good deal he could have taken it to a dealer and really had to pay a arm and leg for that service.
Hmmm, that's the first time I've seen someone not fill the new oil filter with the new oil first on a diesel...
Protocol on starting a diesel up here in Canada in January:
1. Initiate glow plugs
2. Go back into the house, have a second cup of coffee
3. Return to vehicle. Check if glow plug light is off... if so...
4. Start vehicle
Alternative starting method... Don't shut it off!
Supply chain problems from lack of truckers, really kicking people in the nuts as of late. Even here in the cold remote 'Urope, food and goods has gone up a lot. Not enough truckers to move shit around! Really gotta pay those guys more to retain them.
Not to mention the Texas power grid failures and those pesky hurricanes that hit the Gulf coast .
there is not a lack of truckers. there is a lack of capacity at the docks and distribution centers to absorb any changes in supply quanities. truckers are just sitting there doing nothing and earning nothing because there is no space to pick up or drop off goods at docks. that whole "just in time" delivery system falls apart when there is stagnations in the system. and the US simply has been cost reduced in its system its simply completly imploded when the rona hit and its physically impossible to get it back up and running. dont blame a lack of truckers, blame the penny pinchers.
@@SupremeRuleroftheWorld The pay for truckers in the UK has gone up after people found out the crappy conditions during the Rona that they worked under. example, motorway services for food, fuel and toilets. They were open for the emergency services only, so you could tnuse the toilets or showers. Most truck stops in the UK don't have any decent security, or any at all. so stealing from trucks is a thing. some towns don't have truck stops at all. they don't want trucks there, but they want the goods... If you're low on your time for rest, so you park up in a street... Lots quit the industry. the ones from Europe don't want to do the job as a part time anymore
It's not a supply chain problem... It's an inflation issue. Prices are rising so fast everyone is standing around doing nothing except keeping an eye on competitors' and the prices they are charging. It's like a bucket full of terrified mice remaining motionless.
FYI, inflation is caused by the tremendous debt levels of Western governments (fiscal policy), the 24x7 running of the money printing press with the bailout-after-bailout (monetary policy), and a wide-spread belief the cost of capital never has to return from it's artificially low expense compared to historical norms (interest rates).
Hang on, this is going to be with us in one form or another for a decade or more to make up for the previous thirty years of ballooning public debt, an entitlement mindset of the general pubic, and an incompetent ruling class thinking they're a benevolent sugar daddy.
I suggest learning how to garden and raise chickens...
