“Sock it to me” was a huge catchphrase at the time, originating on the groundbreaking TV comedy “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.” President Nixon even uttered the line on the show. And “Peyton Place” was a popular soap opera film and TV series.
I am really into rock and punk rock but I love this song. It’s on my most played list lol. Lights went out in Georgia is definitely a great one to react to.
Tom T. wrote a huge hit called The Year That Clayton Delaney Died. It’s a story song, and he , in later years, would go on to say it was based on an actual person. He wouldn’t give the name because there were a lot of people who had the same last name as “ Delaney” in his hometown. He had another big hit with Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine. Tom drank a lot in his younger years. He told folks that once when he was on tour, he was drinking in a hotel bar, and got talking to an old man. The next day when he was flying to his next stop, he found a piece of paper in his shirt pockets with “ watermelon wine” scribbled on it.
This is how it was back then. My mom was one of the only divorced women in the 60s and early 70s. It was tabu. She had 6 kids and the townsfolk were very judgemental and staunch religious. They pummeled us and shunned her and schools were the worst. But she was ashamed and meek so she never stuck up for herself like this.
There's a video of this song with Barbara Eden from the 1970's movie. It's fun to watch as this song is playing. Another good one is Helen Reddy's "Angie Baby." I remember that song used to scare me as a kid because I couldn't figure out what happened to the boy in the story. Also, the music I thought was rather haunting lol! You should check that one out.
This song always reminds me of what my mother told me about being a single mom in the 1960s. Before my dad, she married her college sweetheart; they moved back to her hometown (where I still live) after graduation where she became a teacher, like her mother. Three years later in 1966, while pregnant with my older brother, she came home from work one day to find all of his things gone. He was leaving her for his 19-year-old girlfriend-he and my mom were divorced and he was remarried before my brother was even born. But possibly the worst part was all the nonsense my mother had to deal with from society. Even though she wasn’t an unwed mother in the traditional sense of the term, she had to deal with the same sort of judgment. Although she didn’t want to move, she acquiesced to her mother‘s wishes to move back in with her (my grandfather had died when my mother was only 15). She was fortunate: at least she was not only educated and gainfully employed, she also had property and money in the bank, which she‘d inherited. She didn’t need him, thankfully. She said when she went to the hospital to be induced, one of the nurses actually asked her, “are you keeping it?” just because she was an unwed mother in that most literal sense. Of course, she also dealt with the absurd laws back then regarding single women having charge accounts: her first husband had gone around and closed all their accounts, despite the fact that she was the one paying the bills and he could never keep a job for very long. according to the law, I guess she just wasn’t responsible unless she had a husband to look after her. Smh
I'm sorry your mom had to go through that, Ashley. I'll bet she didn't realize how strong she was until it was put to the test. I don't even know her, but I'm proud of her! I'm sure you are, too.
Thanks for this reaction Saeed! I used to listen to this song all the time in my younger days. Please, please do more Morissette. I have missed your reactions to her so much!
Hey Saeed, You finally got to my favorite singer of all time! She got me through my tough teenage years. "Parent-Teachers-Association" P.T.A. The guy that delivers ice was coming to her house way too much, insinuating the Mrs. Taylor was having an affair with the ice man! She has another song in this same vein as this one called "Satan Place" and many other great hits, I hope you go down this rabbit hole, I'll be right there with you if you do. My favorite song by her is about a young girl that is the underdog but comes out on top titled "Edna Burgoo" it's awesome and should be played for children and teenagers everywhere! Have a fabulous day my friend!
The 1978 comedy film "Harper Valley PTA" is inspired by the popular 1968 country song "Harper Valley PTA." The film starred Barbara Eden as Stella Johnson, the widow and Susan Swift as Dee Johnson, Stella's daughter. The film's promotional tagline is: "The song was scandalous. The movie is hilarious!" In 1981, Harper Valley PTA was made into a television sitcom (created by Sherwood Schwartz) which aired on NBC from January 1981 to May 1982. Barbara Eden reprised her role as Stella Johnson for the series which lasted two seasons and a total of 30 episodes were produced.
This was 1968. Peyton Place was a dramatic soap opera. Aretha Franklin stated “sock it to me” in her RESPECT song which Richard Nixon used in his presidential campaign. Another great country song that you should review from then is “Ode to Billie Joe” by Bobbie Gentry. Also check out an amazing song “Games People Play” written and sang by Joe South and the his worldwide famous country crossover song “Rose Garden” which was a huuuuge hit by Lyn Anderson.
This whole album is a storytelling song masterpiece. Absolutely incredible and profoundly enjoyable. My other favorite from it is called Cotton Patch. ❤❤❤
You absolutely need to do Tom T Halls “Old Dogs, Children, And Watermelon Wine” Do the one from (Music City Roots) page. Tom retired from performing for years, and I believe this was at his induction to The Country Music Hall of Fame. But you need to pay attention to his introduction to the song too!
" Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away.." In those days, Delivery men delivered Ice to homes to keep the refrigerator cold. So.. Mrs. Taylor sure needed a lot of deliveries when her husband was gone.
Jeannie C. Riley is best known for her 1968 country & pop hit "Harper Valley PTA". But she had some other songs such as "The Girl Most Likely", "There Never Was A Time," "The Rib," "The Back Side of Dallas," "Country Girl," "Oh Singer," & "Good Enough To Be Your Wife". Later she became a born-again Christian and began recording gospel music during the late 1970's.
You'll probably find out that there's a follow up to this called return to Harper valley.Jeanie got older and made everyone come back and make nice and it really sucked. They should have left well enough alone.Dont listen to it it ruins the vibe.😂
They got off easy. Most of the women that I know would not take it nearly that well. You tell them that you don`t approve of the way they are raising their kids and you are going to be bleeding. 🙂
There is a movie starring Barbara Eden as Stella Johnson. Ms. Eden is still with us at 93.
Bless Ms. Eden, best Jeannie ever!
The song is great but the movie wasn't very good
The song is great. The movie, who can say anything bad about Babara Eden.
“Sock it to me” was a huge catchphrase at the time, originating on the groundbreaking TV comedy “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.” President Nixon even uttered the line on the show. And “Peyton Place” was a popular soap opera film and TV series.
Yes! I used to watch it in syndication because I was born in 1968, the year this song was released.
"The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence is a great southern gothic story song.
I am really into rock and punk rock but I love this song. It’s on my most played list lol. Lights went out in Georgia is definitely a great one to react to.
ooh I 2nd this!
Parent Teacher Association - P.T.A. for short. I loved this song when it came out - still do. Calling out hypocrits is great.

Am I the only person old enough to know what Peyton Place was? hahaha
I loved the tv series and I szw the movie, too....
@@jmiltier-pu9dd If I remember rightly, I think the series was considered the very first soap opera. I think...
I was a Peyton Place junkie never missed an episode. LOL
@@PerryCJamesUK it was weekly, not nightly in the 1960's

Back in the 90s, i had a friend who used to perform this song in drag....tiny skirt, white gogo boots....always a crowd pleaser! 👏👏👏👏
Fun story with a very satisfying ending! Love, love, love that guitar playing.
Loved your reaction. Great life-lesson song. Hypocrites are such a pain in the tail and not called out often enough.
I think Jeannie C. Riley was one of my first concerts I went to at one of our county fairs.
Love this song so very much. She put it out there about being hypocritical. Love your reaction!

Musical time travel 😄😄
This song actually became a movie and it is absolutely hilarious! It stars Barbara Eden from the show "I Dream of Jeannie".

This was A HUGE Crossover Hit!!!

There was a television series when I was a little girl called "Harper Valley USA"
Not just revenge story, a 'truth' story. Standards, morals, ethics are fine... but imo it's best to teach, not criticize. Glass houses, etc.
So beautifully 60s !!!
Thanks, Saeed - so much fun... appreciate your reaction!
Dang, haven't heard this in years and years. Thanks for the memories
Love this one! I could see it happening while it was playing 😄
@SaeedReacts. It's a great piece of story telling
I think they did make a movie about it. lol
Ooh, i just looked it up and they did 😅 in 1978. And i see it was even made into a tv series in 1981 that lasted two seasons.

Thanks for letting me know! Will add it to my list.
Tom T. Hall did a great song called "I Love".
There's a sequel to this song called "Return to Harper Valley PTA " .
My fav story telling song is when Billy Joe McCalister jumped off the Tallahatchee bridge by Bobbie Gentry... great song
I reacted to that song. Incredible storytelling!
Tom T. Hall was a wonderful story teller. You need to listen to, "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermellon Wine"
She’s married to Marry Stuart. He’s a fun one to look into. Been doing it since he was little kid
PTA: Parents and teachers association. ❤
Another great song by Tom T. Hall that I loved growing up - Faster Horses (The Cowboy and the Poet)
It has been allegedly said that this song is based on a private all girls school, Harpeth Hall, in Nashville.
Written by Legendary Songwriter & Storyteller - You’d enjoy Tom T. hall’s - Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine
Definitely need to explore more of his music as well. Thanks for watching and the recommendations!
You should listen to Cal Smith "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking". It's along the same line.
"The Pill" by Loretta lynn is a good one too.
You should watch the movie "Harper Valley PTA" - the song is a true story, the movie is hillarious!
I knew you'd enjoy this song!
Now find the old movie!! So funny
Mr Walker it’s All Over by Billie Jo Spears is another great storytelling song.
Thanks for the recommendation!
" Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away.." In those days, Delivery men delivered Ice to homes to keep the refrigerator cold. So.. Mrs. Taylor sure needed a lot of deliveries when her husband was gone.
