    “Nick’s having to do everything by himself”, she says as she dangles over a precipice keeping the boat from hitting the side of the lock with sheer leg power.
    Terysa Vanderloo, you are some kind of woman. And that’s an understatement. You are smart, game, courageous, encouraging, confident, and not a bitch. Such a hard balance to pull off. I learn so much from you.
    Also that handle idea was pretty great, Nick. I guess after you guys have built an A frame and dismantled your mast you can pretty much do anything.
    I’m a better person for having followed your channel for a while. That sounds overly dramatic, but it’s true.

    It looked so daunting at first 😱😰, I don’t think I’ve seen Nick look so serious before! 🧐 On the plus side Nick’s improvisation was stellar 🤓 however, I did get a little worried watching him get a little too engrossed when he started sharpening the spade handles. It must have been hard ground on the banks of the canal, he could have had somebody’s eye out with those beasts! Did he have a nightmare the evening before about vampires or something? 🧛🏼‍♂️🧛‍♀️🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️.
    You’ll both look back on this and be able to enjoy it later on. I think Nicky n Jason will be soo jealous of you both. Top job 👌, give each other a pat on the back and, wait for some more bumps in the adventure. 👍

    That was scary and exhausting to watch you two go at it, getting through those locks. Hopefully no damage to the boat. And hopefully no injuries, aside from Nick's thumbnail. You guys were fortunate that no one was on the opposite side of that long tunnel. Congratulations on your 100th episode!!

  • @Captain-Paul

    Having gone through the Caledonian Canal a couple of times, flights of Scottish Locks seem much easier to Navigate & more laid back (Scotland more laid back than France! seems weird). That said take out the complication of the Mast on the deck and it would certainly have been an easier task. At least the French keep the gongoozlers back - in Scotland you have to fight your way through them bowline in hand. Given you were also filming at the same time you did a fantastic job

    I am going to go check my blood pressure after watching this. I can't imagine how high Nick's must have been!
    Also- try turning the chisel around next time. The long flat side goes up. The angle goes toward the wood. You should have more success next time.

  • @chrisdowning9626
    @chrisdowning9626 3 года назад +1

    The speed at which the water gushes in takes your breath away and almost compromises your boat handling. Important never to rush even if the lock keepers yell at you. It's a major challenge two up and in an 8m boat you're toast if you get intimidated. With the tourist boats it's very challenging and the keepers hate any rafting unless it's all changed since 2003.

  • @HiroNguy
    @HiroNguy 5 лет назад +5

    Looks like bow thrusters would be well worth it for that passage!

  • @garethchild
    @garethchild 5 лет назад +1

    This is why narrowboats have centre lines - they make all the difference. I must have single-handed through staircase locks a hundred times.
    But then narrowboats don’t have any clutter on the superstructure getting in your way when stepping on & off with a line tied thirty feet in front of you, or a delicate mast sticking out of the front. They are also built to withstand gentle (and not so gentle!) contact with other boats, lock gates, and stone walls.
    I’m very relaxed when I lock through staircases in my narrowboat: I wouldn’t sleep for a month if I was asked to take a blue water sailing boat through one.
    Huge respect to you for doing this. I recommend yoga, whiskey and therapy to help the recovery.

  • @paterson00

    Happy 100th. Fantastic episode. Seriously surprised fellow boaters on the motor boat, having around 7 on board did not offer assistance. Also, Nick... what happened to the "Fork handles" very expected joke there while Teresa was explaining what you had used to make your ground pegs? You just lost a couple of kudos points for letting that one slip by.

  • @tartansailor
    @tartansailor 5 лет назад +1

    I have navigated quite many locks to date and I found those 7 locks to be more challenging than the one I went thru. The rounded wall on your starboard side made the passing more challenging because of the mast extending forward. Also, there was also quite a bit of current in between locks, that should'nt be. Cheers

    It was funny to watch your struggle with the locks :) It reminded me and my baby while we were new into those too.We are nowhere near as experienced in open waters as you guys but we live and go canal boating in Holland and around, and such situations are daily practice for us :) It takes a while to get used to them but after that they are just fun! Staircase lock probably the most horrifying thing on a canal. The people watching we call gongoozlers. Now a tunnel that is 100 metres is not a tunnel it’s a bridge hole try doing the blissworth tunnel at 2800 metres or the braunston tunnel at 1800 but with a slight kink in it so you have to be careful not to hit the side and also two way traffic. The blissworth takes you about 50 min to get through in total darkness apart from your small lamp at the front. Anyway great videos can’t wait to see Carcassonne love the town when’s the in September and we fell in love with it!

  • @MJGruskin
    @MJGruskin 5 лет назад +1

    Thought of you guys when I heard the news of the terrible California boat explosion. Your focus in the reviews about life raft placement and ease of deployment. Why, in the main cabin, isn’t there a switch or cord to pull that would immediately release a life raft into the water already tied to the boat? That way if the boat was on fire or in distress you could get out and not waste time accessing the life raft and inflating it? Even a private aircraft (Cirrus) has a switch to deploy a parachute in an emergency! Would it also not be wiser to make the cabin access hatches larger? Thx and be safe!

    We love your channel! You handled that situation so well, both of you! You communicate to each other in respectful ways, even under extreme duress. I wish mainstream TV featured healthy couples like the two of you over the yelling/fighting low-class couples they usually show, who shower each other with contempt. Another reason we don't have cable. My main thought through the whole ordeal was, 'why don't these bloody onlookers offer a friggin' hand! One hand, to catch a line, that's all! jay-sus, people!!'

    • @sailingrubyrose

    What is the fucking point of doing this. Why don't you guys do it with kayak. I believe it's so stupid and was hoping your boat cracked up or break apart in pieces, so dumb. It's like people who go fishing for sport, they catch the fish and throw it back. My thought is why stress a fish by catching it if you're not going to eat it.

    Wow! what an incredible accomplishment! With that kind of freeboard and overhangs, kinda points out why canal boats are shaped like they are...
    A bit more breeze might have really complicated things!
    As fascinating as this was, I'm wondering if you would
    a) recommend taking a sailboat through these canals, and
    b) why you didnt hire some assistance from locals.

    the bystanders know what's up; they're there for some entertainment!
    also i know all too well the enhancing frustration of a captain trying to contain the situation and the deck hands feeling like they're not capable enough

    good work. was the other boat in your docks tying up each time or just using thrusters and engine to hold their place in the dock?

      It was exactly 3m. If you watch the first canal episode we talk about how we came to decide on the draft to have

    Fashioning stakes out of those handles, was brilliant. It is funny how much anticipation and stress is transmitted through your camera to us. I am glad that you didn't experience any damage.

      Oh and there are 3 types of "fun". Type 1 is enjoyable when you are doing it, type 2 is enjoyable in retrospect, and type 3 is completely unenjoyable. :)
