    Karlsson is not a little boy, but a grown man with absolutely no regards for anyone but himself. Compared to other Astrid Lindgren characters, that unpleasantness didn’t work as well in Sweden, so his biggest popularity came in the Soviet Union. My amateur guess is that it resonated because it provided a shared story about an obnoxious dictator without any obvious way for the stories to be interpreted as political.

    • @feorge4972
      @feorge4972 Год назад +17

      I think it was because of the cartoon. The characters in soviet cartoons are quite different from how they are portrayed in other countries (for example, winnie the pooh is very different from disney's version). Also i don't remember Carlson being totalitarian or mean, rather fun and irresponsible, but I haven't watched the cartoon in a while. I think a connection between Carlson and Stalin (or some other soviet leaders) would be a huuuge stretch

    • @magnushultgrenhtc
      @magnushultgrenhtc Год назад +5

      @@feorge4972 In a way, that's my point exactly. There is no similarity to persons, more to the self-aggrandising attitude and the "do me this random favour" that Soviet citizens had come to expect - and maneuver - in their daily life.

    • @mariyamak
      @mariyamak 11 месяцев назад +6

      It was just a really stellar cartoon and the Karlsson character was very lovable if obnoxious. If anything, the aunt symbolized the oblivious authority figure. I am Russian and I definitely remember the cartoon before I read the book and I barely remember the book - I may have read an excerpt. I went to the Astrid Lindgren museum in Stockholm - they have a lot of dioramas and I was shocked at how bleak and boring/grotesque Karlsson seemed..

      I'm with you in this. While most stories of Lindgren are in some way scary (just think about Bröderna Lejonhjärta dealing with disease and death at a young age), Karlsson was somewhat special as the character himself was a protagonist. I always was very vary of him, because he was older and bigger than Lillebror and had this glint in his eye I can only describe as dangerous and untrustworthy. Always thought he might just flip and kill Lillebror. A real psycho.
      That is one character of Lindgren I never liked and never will. And that says a lot when you think about Emils father constantly beating him (or at least trying to)...
