Rad Yvan has been preaching a rotary finishes better for years. I always kept an open ear because the theory made sense to me. This really shined for me when I bought a corded rotary and the results really hit home. Local detailers have asked how I get the paint so crisp but I keep this secret to myself because they are trying to prove how well they finish with a 21 mm dual action polisher. The rotary is also easier on my arms. Thank both of you guys for this video!
Yvan's videos did the same thing to me ... turned everything I thought I knew about rotaries and detailing on its head. I USED TO be afraid of the rotary, now I love using it.
Same here, Fred. I had two Flex machines and sold them because I didn't see the need for a rotary. That said, I do like the continuity of having machines from one company. I am really on the fence as to what rotary machine to purchase if I do end up going down that route again.
Fantastic as always Rick. As someone who was detailing before there were long throw DA polishers, every car had to be finished with a Rotary. Just know that even now, they have a use, and being proficient with one will make you better with your DA as well.
Hi Rick 🖐! Interesting perspective on the use of the rotary for finishing,. I will be waiting for you to try it and give your opinion of the results. School will be out soon, patiently waiting for some Rad videos!!👍🍻
I have to decide whether investing in a rotary is a good choice for me. With the right pad and slow polisher speed, I can see how it would really be a nice way to finish off a polishing project.
Hi Rick 👋! If you are considering buying a rotary polisher I would highly recommend the Flex PE150-18.0 EC battery powered. I bought one earlier this year and I love it! It is a workhorse. I have taken a couple of detailing/paint correction classes from Mike Phillips and I now feel confident using a rotary. Cheers!!..
That one is on my watch list. I just really really like having my machines all match. I know that sounds lame, but I'm leaning towards the Rupes rotary. A few people have questioned the ergonomics, but it just FITS so well in my garage.
So did the final polish come out hologram free then? I have an unused makita rotary actually getting ready to let her rip. Whats your pad choices for straight rotary compounding and polishing? Thx
Using the rotary on low speed with the red finish pad resulted in a hologram-free finish. As for pad choice with rotary, that's where I am at as well. I haven't had much experience with the rotary process, but feel like it is something I will experiment with this summer.
Most PPF is self healing so they don’t need any correction, but some of the older stuff can actually be corrected to a degree. For PPF, I usually do a wash with a PPF-formulated wash and if it smooth to the touch, I will then add a ceramic coating. I don’t take the polisher to PPF any more.
I had a porter cable 15 years ago for one summer. I went to a makita rotary and never went back. I don’t get the fear people have with these machines ?
My only fear is leaving holograms behind. I used to have a Flex 3401 and I ended up ceramic coating my blue SQ5 after polishing it and only then did I notice the holograms. I think people are also worried they could burn through their clear coat with a rotary. Yvan conducted an interesting test with the team at The Rag Company in which they tested which machine would burn through clear coat the quickest. I was surprised with the outcome: ruclips.net/video/Vyz6P9XeYrw/видео.htmlsi=-Q56z9UVFRdG3ess
I'm not entirely sure of the lingo, but it was either buffing trails or holograms and I locked them in with the ceramic coating, but I was a newbie back then.

I had heard this but had never really had the full explanation. I will have to pick up a rotary and see it for myself.
Thank You Neil.
That' 21 mm of throw is fun to handle around moldings and such...
I got a rotary. Never used it, yet. I don't like the way a DA seems to jump all over the place. Violent looking to me.

@@DetailedbyDon I used this exact method to finish my weekend project.
That's 2 cool Canadians! Lol great information here. Seems like a ton of fun and lots of knowledge
I had such an amazing time. I would love to make that southern detailer’s event with you guys, but I used up all my “sub days”! 😂
@RAD Garage hahaha oh man, I don't think they would be able to handle you! 😂😂 next year I'm confident I'll get to meet ya in person buddy! 🤙
Rick is much more entertaining off camera, his students are blessed.
Awesome!
Glad you think so!
Super video.
Thank you
Thank you very much! It was a real thrill to do such a video and meet one of the people behind the DIY brand.
Awesome stuff Rick - He came down to Idaho and changed all our perspectives
The man knows how to spread his message!
Great video Rick. My first rotary polisher was a Simoniz from Canadian Tire 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I love that. I think many a Canadian detailing enthusiast can trace their first steps back to the aisles of their local Canadian Tire!
Like many other Canadian car enthusiasts, CTC is who fed our passion( the weekly flyer!).
I still leaf through the flyers when they arrive.
@@diydetailofficial the weekly flyer was iconic 😅
Great content!
Thanks for watching. I will be getting back to some cinematic stuff real soon.
I regret selling my rotary a few years ago. I should have kept it. Good stuff Rick and Yvan!
Thank you Fred

Great respect between you 2 guys !
Let's see if Patagonia will show up 🤑
Stay RAD 🤘
No calls yet. 👎
Finally someone who pronounced Lacroix correctly 👏 🙌
Pronouncing his first name as “Ivan” was difficult since the French pronunciation is way more natural for me!
I’ve adapted it the English language.
@@RADGarage Is it supposed to be pronounced, "E VON"?
I really enjoyed your video, thanks Rick 👍😁
It was fun to interact with people. I hope to be invited next year and work with other interesting faces behind the brands.
Man I'm old school I never stopped using rotory for buffing and polishing
If you know the machine, why ever stop?

I’m currently considering which rotary machine to purchase.
New Rupes or Flex you will not go wrong
I still need to perfect my craft on this one. My results are not currently what I want. I may need to record myself. Hahaha
It's a life long pursuit imo.

@@RADGarage What pad is that? Thx
@@jeffdeluca1153 That’s the DIY Detail red finishing pad. They have two other pads for different uses. I believe Lake Country makes it for them.
Hey Rick. I'm dying To KNOW as a detailer.....can We Paint correct with da on a car that has ppf? Or is that pointless?

@@RADGarage when you say holograms, are you referring to the cloudy circular haze or the super fine hair thin circular scratches ?

That was a RAD schoolin moment
Education is the 🔑 to our future!

How about starting and finishing with a rotary?Using a da all day vibrates the hell out of the arms...
I’m sure it has been done.
Definitely, just a different pad, the rest stays the same.
@@diydetailofficialWhat pad do you recommend for cutting with a Rotary?
First!!
Thank you
Rotary is easy to use since on clear coat is easy
I’m getting one.
