Every culture dances. Moving our bodies to music is ubiquitous throughout human history and across the globe. So why is this ostensibly frivolous act so fundamental to being human? The answer, it seems, is in our need for social cohesion - that vital glue that keeps societies from breaking apart despite interpersonal differences. The French sociologist Émile Durkheim (1858-1917) theorised that ‘collective effervescence’ - moments in which people come together in some form of unifying, excitement-inducing activity - is at the root of what holds groups together. More recently, Bronwyn Tarr, an evolutionary biologist and psychologist at the University of Oxford who is also a dancer, has researched the evolutionary and neurological underpinnings of our innate tendency to bust a move. Drawing on the work of both Durkheim and Tarr, this Aeon Original video explores that unifying feeling of group ‘electricity’ that lifts us up when we’re enthralled by our favourite sports teams, participating in religious rituals, entranced by music - and, yes, dancing the night away.

this might be one of my favourite videos of all time. the animation is absolutely lovely, it is the perfect example of the aesthetics of our decade. the explanation is satisfactory and scientific, while providing information for further research if someone would wish to do so. as someone who used to dance competetively i’m often sad about the lack of discussions about the place of dance in the social sphere so the theme hit close to home! thank you for your effort and keep up the good work!
This a concisely brilliant commentary on the social phenomena we call dance.
💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻👠👠👠💃🏻love dancing salsa bachata takes my troubles away!!👠💃🏻♥️arriba Azucaaaa!
I agree with the explanation of dancing in / with a group. it however does not explain why people also dance and move to music when they are alone.
It's a wierd thing but I guess the answer (like why we do most things in life is) that we feel good when we're doing it
@@peterfrombelgium4636 why do we fell good tho?
Thanks, now I know that Im not human
Brilliant, just brilliant! Thank you for creating this amazing, probably one of the BEST, video explaining my life and the reason I believe social dance (such as Argentine Tango) is the best antidote to everything, from depression and pain to loneliness and isolation. Let's DANCE!
i DONT like taengo.
Don't even realise why this is not as famous as I supposed it should be
This is great
Awesome animation where can I learn such amazing art???
Very informative...
Very sweet!
It's that exhilaration, almost euphoria, that overtakes groups of people united by
Holy shit this blew my mind you basically described the entirety of humanity 😂
It is a neurological basis to Durkheim's collective effectiveness - the melding between "self" and "other"
who else is watching this for a dance class at school?
I was the biggest critic of dancing but sometimes u just get the itch to bust a move
so there must be something wrong with me and my brain because I hate dancing.
fabulous, excuse me, I feel the need for a square dance, a jig, a few arabesques, a bit of pogo, but first the twist
cool
interesting 😗
Without a song and dance, what are we?
Thank you for the music,
May be that was the reason why people allways tried to force me to dance and where terrible insulted when I don't let them forcing me
aeon !
Dancing has no sadness
Those videos are soo pretty to look at!!
I just wanted to learn why we dance but then I found this trippy as sht
a common purpose, pursuing an intensely involving activity together.
you can skip to 3:18 to get the explanation, also im pretty sure Emile Durkheim overview is just a post hoc rationalization, the simplest explanation would be it was trendy and people got socially pressured to do the same until it became the norm, maybe it started from religious ceremonies and tickled down to the society, and good luck trying to explain rationally why religion does things
