Three Golden Oldies pass on their astute and humorous insights on becoming old and poor, and the stark choices they now face in their twilight years. Full of wisdom, independent spirit and hard earned perspective. Makes you ask, could this happen to me?
Doris is 84, who won’t let a living soul (including the film-maker) inside her chaotic Clacton home - for fear that social services will take it away from her.
Feisty Kitty in Exeter is also 84. She shows us her Kate Moss inspired knicker and bra collection, and dreams of a miracle cure to an illness like most dream of winning the lottery.
And then there’s relatively youthful and charismatic Frank from Liverpool, who at 72 has lost his family to emigration and with no one left has lost the will to carry on - but not his intelligence or tragic humour. Self-imprisoned in his own home like a character from a Samuel Beckett play, his neighbours rarely see him. He hasn’t had a bath in years - mainly because he doesn’t have one.

Yes! And I just don't understand why no-one paid for him to have a hot water and put his sink and bath in. If I was his neighbour I would have. Even the district nurses just left him after his treatment even though they knew. He seemed to be crying out for help for the simplest and most basic of things or perhaps he is just to proud to accept any help? Makes me very sad.

As a "young" ageing lady with health issues, this documentary has given me the insight that I need to count my blessings for what I have even though I am alone.

Kitty looks amazing to be 84 years old. And she seems to be such a sweet person. All of them seem to be such sweet individuals. Wish they were my neighbors, I would visit them often
I am 71. I have a niece from Greece, and was astounded at the way she treats her elders--with respect, gentleness, and even reverence. I have seen similar treatment in other cultures. So nice...
sagrammyfour We are both 75. From England originally, bu we emigrated to Canada 18 years ago to see our grandchildren from birth to 17 and 19.
Next year we are emigrating again to Crete...somewhere warm and sunny. Same health care as the UK too. Can’t wait!
It’s the same here in the Arab world. Senior citizens are treated like royalty by random strangers everywhere they go, let alone family, clan, and tribe.

One of the best documentaries I've ever watched. When I turned 18 I was confused and I didn't want to go to college. I spent a year at home wondering what to do, and that year turned into two years... After that my mom told me I had to work or study so I looked at the options and since I've always loved the medical field, I went to school one year and became a nurse assistant and that has been the best choice of my life. I did two internships at a hospital (which I loved) and one at an elderly home and that was just... so rewarding? I legit felt my heart fill with love when I took care and helped them every day and it's such a shame we tend to forget our elders as a society. I'm studying again now to try and get into college and hopefully become a nurse so I can work with elder people again and take care of them during their last years around and, hopefully, bring to them the comfort they bring to me.

@@sabinekoch3448 coming here two years later to update this: I did make it into nursing school, starting this fall. I've been working at a nursing home and I love it in here. I plan on coming back once I'm a full nurse!
I have adopted an elderly couple I go by every day and do wat I can. they have enriched my life. it takes a village

@darlingUSA1 Nice am sure very rewarding to put a smile on somebody's face ,warmth and comfort in their heart. Do you call them by nickname, I know a guy who had a nickname for everybody, born in the 40's? he sure taught me a lot about life. Old Vic, his wife left him a long, long time ago due to his infidelity. Plus, no children we my husband, a friend of his, kinda helped him out with vet visits, grass cutting and grocery shopping. at the supermarket one day, his pants fell down in the produce section. he was very angry saying "You f****** C***. I could not do anything. He was talented enough. Being a mechanic at 21, building his own rear engine engine rail (front engine rails are not great) If the engine starts on fire ........ However , many winning trophy's, one of I have, A small victory cup from the year I was born. He said I could have it. My (ex) husband met him at the racetrack. It takes somebody to put a smile on somebody.

All amazing stories but Frances' story got to me the most. "Yesterday" playing, what was once a Beatles song about a broken heart takes on more meaning in facing old age, loneliness, and death. As a contractor I have done work for elderly people who I knew could not really afford things to be fixed for free or a tiny sum so they can keep their pride. I have spent hours talking with elderly customers in their homes after just fixing a lamp or wiring a chair lift for $10 dollars. I really never talk about it much but had I known Frances I would have got a few people to come by a Saturday to get his bathroom working and kitchen sink for the best gift of all to see his happiness and show him people do care and respect him.
Can you adopt old people? I would adopt Doris in a heartbeat. She's lovely and has a wicked sense of humour
Here in NZ, we have an organisation called 'Age Concern' which one can join (after being vetted) whereby you 'adopt' an oldie or two or three or - as many as you can reasonably manage. You befriend them, then visit on a regular basis - usually weekly. I did this for over ten years and found it incredibly rewarding.

I have befriended a few oldies on my own, if they can maintain a some degree of of conversation or retain a bit of humour. I am not a skilled professional,so I can't do much more than that.
Would love someone to fix up his place for him. And someone to take him for a drive now and then and a chat.
We have befriending charities here too. Age UK and other local bodies. I was registered as a volunteer, and my previous church practice this, visiting elderly parishioners regularly, as well as care homes. Most care homes have volunteer visitors. But, unfortunately, this is a growing and heartrending problem.
I’m 68 and alone. I have family I keep in touch with,they keep in touch with me. I maintain my home of 45 years. I grow my own organic garden.preserve lots of fruits and veggies! I make sure I arrange repairs of paramount issues like water heat and roof, etc. I remain positive and keep moving above all! I feel very fortunate after watching this.
Kitty reminds me of my Nan, I'm just glad my family have always looked after her and my grandad before he passed. I learnt it doesn't take much, just having them over once per week for Sunday dinner, bringing over a few meals to put in the freezer for when they don't feel up to cooking. Helping with the garden and cleaning the house once per week, popping over for a cup of tea it doesn't take much but it means the world to my grandparents to realise they are still very much loved and wanted around. I've also found just taking my little dog over to see my Nan helps cheer her up as she doesn't believe elderly should have pets cos they could be left without a home after she's gone, it's why care in the community and things like PAT animals are so important if people don't have families around it gives people hope and socialisation, there's nothing worse than being alone.

But we are mostly invisible: only go out on days I'm good enough to so people think I'm doing just fine. Some ask 'how are you?' but when I tell them the truth they don't want to hear so I wish they didn't ask if they really don't care how I am and what I need. I've got a brain injury & other injuries and this neglect has made me anxious & depressed, oh what a surprise.
That old man was such a horrible human being not even his only daughter wants anything to do with him...shame.

It's certainly not just the elderly that are isolated. I am 37 and I haven't had a proper conversation with another human being for 5 months. I spent all xmas and new year alone. I am self employed and work form home. I talk to a couple of clients via email every week and that's about it.
I love living on my own and value my independence but it can be really difficult to find appropriate company once you leave school. I've had tons of friends over the years only to find that they have died, let me down, ripped me off or fallen out of contact.
I don't know what life has in store for me in the future but I do hope that these people featured are able to maintain their independence (if they wish) but that the locals may do more for them after seeing this documentary. It's important to reach out to anyone who you think is suffering. If nothing else, people should take away from this documentary, that we could all do more to help those around us.

It's so hard to believe that thousands of elderly are living in difficult living conditions.
I especially adored Doris for her words of wisdom, sharp mind, and wicked sense of humor.
I used to take care of the elderly. Now I’m elderly myself. It isn’t easy, but learning to live in the moment helps. Doris is a hoot, love her.❤️
The poem Kitty wrote honestly made me sob. Her and Doris are just so inspirational. They're all wonderful people who have lived such interesting lives. This is a really hard hitting documentary because it really makes you realize our mortality. Life is short or sometimes far too long. Hearing such wise advice from people who have lived for so much longer than I have is honestly just....I can't even explain it. It's terrifying and awakening all at the same time. It's just so astounding to see these people go through their lives, still being as strong as ever. I know this is an older documentary but still, it REALLY stuck with me. This is probably going to stick with me for years to come. This is definitely a documentary that's worth watching.
I'm glad I watched this, but it broke my heart. I was holding it together until the first two or three chords of "Yesterday", and then I had to grab some tissues. :( What strikes me the most about Francis is that he would benefit SO much from simply having a local plumber or two who would be willing to put in some volunteer hours here and there to put his plumbing together properly (including a water heater, even if it's just a small one). He even made it clear that he'd rather have help fixing up his house, than go into a "home" where he would lose his independence. Why are people so willing to shove the elderly into assisted living facilities, but so unwilling to help them just fix the homes they have now, and maybe visit every so often?

Francis is entitled to a kitchen and bathroom if he were to be referred to a social worker. Someone needs to report his circumstances and life would change for him.
Because if they go into "a home", the State and care facility get the house. Remain independent and the State gets nothing, that's why. We live in a callous, cruel world. AND HIS SELFISH DAUGHTER IS BEYOND COMPREHENSION! I'm only 63 and my only child that I did EVERYTHING for, doesn't speak to me, either. I'll be GLAD when I'm finally gone.
DARK APPERITION Well, the narrator says that he is not willing to accept outside help, so what do you do?
DARK APPERITION Well, he also kept saying that he had not had a bath 🛀 in 12 years, so those sweet female nurses arranged for him to get a bath and a meal and somewhere to get in out of the cold. And what did he do? He was almost about to get in the bathtub, but of course, decided not to at the last minute. Very confusing. I have JUST gotten a place to live after being homeless and in the cold for 10 years. I cannot tell you how good a tub bath felt after using the water hoses’ cold water for all that time! I did not want to get out! God will provide a way for those who have good intentions and love him. I am a living witness to that, even though I have strayed away from him several times. I never did get too far away that I could not remember how to get back under his caring wing. Maybe Francis will find a way to live in his little home with the plumbing problems corrected so his last years are comfortable and his daughter finds it in her heart to forgive or forget their disagreement(s). I will definitely pray for just that. Take care of yourself my friend. Mark
Ah, what lovely genuine elderly people in this documentary, it's so unfortunate for so many that they are neglected by the very system that they've paid into all their lives.
I think this will be me when I get old. Never planned for it to be this way, but life has a way of throwing you curveballs. And strokes.
Yup, it happened to me: was fit, strong & healthy when BAM medical errors wrecked my life - and no access to justice (or even remedial care) after.
Sharing our lives with other people gives it value. I can't imagine being that alone for so long.

Was 80 yrs old last week and reside alone. Can not walk more the a few feet but grateful to wake everyday. i try not to depend on others who are busy with their own lives but do have a wonderful health aide a few hours a week Live on a fixed income but appreciate the fact that life is GOOD. THANK YOU LORD, bless people of ALL ages that have difficult lives,

The Beyonder .... I really would like to know all about them. The guy seemed very fit and wished his house could have had a kitchen and bathtub put in. Each grew wise with time and it inspired me in ways I can not express.
I adored meeting these people via this doc. My maternal grandmother lived to 100. She always had a fabulous sense of humor. My mother died at 68.❤ We never know how much time we have left. I hope to live until I've lost my sense of humor.
Thank you for posting this and thank you to Doris, Kitty and Francis for sharing your thoughts, hopes and anxieties. The trouble is, I don't consider myself old - other people do and therefore it is their problem. I love living by myself, but now I have a gentleman who shares my facilities (ie cooking, laundry, electricity, rent ,bathing, internet) and he sleeps in a caravan on my property. We share the grocery bill, fuel costs and housekeeping. We respect each other's privacy and habits and compromise by constant communication. Others would probably think we're on the poverty line, but we don't. Blessings to you all.

Hi Rosemary, I'm 53 and single, underpaid (in comparison to a male doing the same job) white woman who rents, living in Australia. I'm preparing myself now for the possibility that I'll be living on the streets when I can no longer support myself. I watch these to the end to get some tips/ what to look out for, what to keep or throw away in order to live/travel light, what help is available etc.
This is an epidemic that is global. The saddest part is that we aren't allowed to die if we choose and our children cannot afford to look after us. I have learned to love only having the precious things that have been given me by my children or dear friends around me. The rest is superfluous to leading a good life.
My favourite quote by Leonardo da vinci is "As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well USED brings happy death". Its not about what we've got, its about what we do with what we've been blessed with.

I am nearly 70 and I take every day as it comes. Look forward to what the next day brings. I drive and go out daily.
I look after myself physically and mentally. Have a good diet and grow my own organic vegetables.
My adult children have their own homes and lead busy lives, however we see each other every day.
Unlike the UK I am privileged to live in a country that provides good health system, emergency housing for people who need it and good social structure.
That country is Australia!
We also have a service that provides hot meals to the elderly or infirm.
I don't know about the UK or USA but I think we are extremely lucky to live in Australia.👋

this is why saving for retirment and owning my own house is so important to me. you must save for retirment as soon as you start working don't depend on the government and in the U.S. it's worse in that we have such high medical costs

Except Francis couldn't keep up with repairs. You could sell your house after you retire, invest the money, and live in an apartment where someone else is responsible for the upkeep.

Nun Urbuisness Sad to say, you can try to prepare your whole life through but, in fact, more often than not, life can kick you a blow. ... an illness, an accident or, like in my husband’s case an acquision that swallowed up His pension ( long story short - Poof! Gone ) . We were some of the lucky ones, we were retired from the military before he went to work for that company. So we had an income to fall back on and his medical bills that occured due to a major heart attack were covered or we would have been out on the streets.
We are now in our mid-seventies. We have worked our way back through a lot of financial difficulties and, again, own our own home - with a mortgage - have his pension ( which will go away if he passes) and Social Security. I am more than willing to cut back when necessary and I think assisted living sounds fine to me as long as I can decide my own care. I don’t want to be medicated and strapped to a wheelchair. I want to be able to come and go as I please. Doris îs my hero. She lives life on her terms.
I saved for retirement. Then got cancer and spent my retirement on getting better. Now I have nothing. Life throws you curves. And then you go without.
My grandmother is 98 and still lives mostly on her own.
She's an amazing woman and she's always been an incredible woman.
its abslolutely disgraceful that the British government allows so many elderly people to have no heating in the winter and allow pensioners to die every year of the cold. How can this happen in powerful 1st world country ?
The government is not interested in looking after the people they should. They keep putting the pension age up hoping people die before they reach it so can't claim a pension.
Because they're spending all their surplus tax dollars on those demanding "immigrants". It's shameful.

I've dedicated my life as a nurse to elderly people in their homes. I take care of 20 a day. I love them
I raised a large family and when my kids were younger they helped the elderly neighbors. They'd get paid in cookies which tickled them pink. I told them that when I get old, move me in their house, just set me in front of the window and give me tea, I won't be any bother at all. 💖

Francis is a total contradiction. He's physically strong. Can go up and down the stairs with little effort. He talks about not laying down before it's your time, yet he's frank about trying to commit suicide. It seems his loneliness could be fixed so easily with some visits out to play cards, have meals. I think his issue is more anxiety and severe depression that's not being addressed and that's too bad because he looks like he could have some good years left in him.............and he's certainly not unattractive as he seems to think he is.

I’m quiet tearful watching this .. lovely souls .. all of them .. as for that daughter .. well words fail .. no matter the water that’s gone under the bridge .. bitterness is the most saddest of all emotions and she will be the one who bares it’s consequence.. because bitterness carries a heavy price .. always and without exception

I hope if/when I get that old, I will have the same wisdom as Doris has. Such a sweet wise lady with a sense of humour that brightens up every bad day you can have. Someone asked if it was possible to adopt an elderly person, may be a joke, but the idea is really great. I know here in The Netherlands there are organisations that bring ppl together in that kind of way. People without children are matched with single parent families. It is called the grannyproject. The children get a nanna and the elderly woman get some sort of grandchildren, works great both ways.....
DirkjeA That's wonderful! I decided not to have children for many reasons and I was sad despite that that it meant I wouldn't have grandchildren. I would like to have "adopted" grandchildren if I live to be elderly while also helping a single parent. That would be a blessing for everyone.

I like Kitty. Such a gracious lady. She’s not much older than me, but I admire her discipline towards life. She keeps herself well presented and her home is tidy. That must take a lot of effort on her part. I liked Francis and Doris, as well, but I can identify more with Kitty. God Bless them All, wherever they are.

littlepiggydog on IG Why? I am one of those people. I've already faced the worst life can throw at a person so what's left to fear? I left a rather nice nursing home although they scored me as very frail in order to go a few states over for a feral Arabian stallion. I consider that horse a family member so I'm not at all lonely. My body has slowly become a little stronger taking care of him. I am slowly getting him trained. It's just harder than it was in my younger years. My many years of experience help offset that. Old age can be sad and lonely or it can be joyful even without much money.:-)
Without God in your heart...these stories can be very depressing.

Ed, honestly, you're on to something there. Francis struck me as very creepy and not because of his mental illness. He loved, way too much, being handled by the young, YOUNG, home care givers he had in. I believe they go in pairs to see him for safety's sake. He does say he had all the girls after him, and that he was a looker. I get the impression that there are a few sexual assaults in his past that were passed off as just getting a bit overly friendly, right ? He was an engineer, why didn't he keep up with technology and get a computer or engineer his own solutions to his piping problems in the bathroom/kitchen ? His daughter probably has very good reason not to contact him! (that's my impression.) It took me until the care givers went to see him to come to these conclusions. a summation for sure, but I wouldn't count it as being too far off.

I want to hug every one of them. I just love little Doris, bless her heart. She was so funny talking about the foxes. I wish I could adopt all of them as my grannies and grandpa.
Then do so. Or find elderly people in your community that you could visit and help out. That would be lovely for both sides. I know about this.

You may think that now but we all have the same feelings. Some people find religion some curse it. It is a very unnatural thing to welcome death. It goes against our very own instinct for survival.
They were the lucky ones fought wars and knew who side they were on, could see through the bullshit and everything was reasonably priced and they worked for it I wish I was one of them and didn’t have to live into the future BS that is coming!
You will find old age is a cruel joke. Not only does your body attack u but u find the closest life long family n friends dropping off one by one. It hurts!

I feel so sorry for Francis, I can't imagine living without hot water, a bathtub or a kitchen. I think I'd die if i had to keep the heat off just to survive. It would be nice if someone would volunteer to do the repairs for him.

I worked as a care assistant for (mostly) old people. there were some who I genuinely loved and it made me so sad how most of them lived such isolated lives
30:49 No I can't text her because I haven't got a computer. So sad that his daughter didn't even bother to ring him back. 35:24 was pretty heartbreaking too. It must be so devastating for her to be trapped there with folks who are in horrible shape, slumped over in a wheelchair and she is still high function enough to know better.

georgina cat You don't stop trying though. We don't give up on our kids and so they shouldn't give up on aging parents. If she doesn't want to do it then she at least can have somebody else who does it for her. I had a relative who was very difficult and could be mean but lived alone well in to her 90's. She was not friendly, she argued with people, she wouldn't ask for help and she didn't tell me when she needed things She just went without because she was too proud or "independent" to ask for help. She was very combative and embarrassing in public. When I would do things or buy things she would get mad, yell and scream and stomp her foot like a child. I didn't give up though. I did things behind the scene and let her believe she was independent. It was a thankless job but I did it anyways. I contacted neighbors and gave them my phone number and asked them to keep an eye on her. I brought food, arranged for senior services, made sure her yard was kept up and tried to get a cleaning service in. It was not easy but I can't imagine just forgetting about her and leaving her to fend for herself.

My father isn't in prison and he beat me.. he doesn't deserve prison he was just a shit dad... but he also does not deserve my support. not easy if you have a thyroid problem or other illness that wipes you out. Lots of younger people equally housebound with health problems, if ony there were some way to unite all the lonely people. Breaks my heart tbh.

This is sad. I wonder where I would end up when I am old. I know elderly who have children and they are abandoned when they are old. It doesn't matter how may children they have.
I have been abandoned by my family. I have leukemia and diabetes to name a few illnesses and I haven't even been visited or called for 7 years by any of my family. In a way I am glad I am sick. I have a short expiration date and won't have to live in this pit of loneliness much longer. For that, I am blessed.
Seriously, my mom's mom had seven children, all of whom she doted on and they all left her in a nursing home after a stroke. The worst of it was she fully recuperated, but they made her stay until she died...twenty years later. None of them treated her right. She didn't even fight the will when her husband left everything to her sons who went on to all be successful business owners. It's disgusting how they did so well and some didn't even contribute to her care. I'm deeply ashamed of how cold and heartless my mom's family treated their mom.

I'm on my way to be considered elderly and I have 4 children. I watched and saw the examples of my parents taking care of their parents, so I did the same for my aged parents. Children learn by example so hopefully they will follow suit!
At 72 Francis should not be considered old. Too many elderly people live like this in the U.K., a sad reflection on that society.
He has chronic fatigue syndrome which will make anyone, no matter how athletic, energetic, and vital prior, feel like an 80 year old.
It's not just the UK, it's the same here in Australia. I've seen doccos from the US that speak to this problem as well. It seems to be a Western problem, many of us are content to warehouse our elderly, and generally only think of them infrequently, if at all.
72 isn’t really that old in their day and age but having an illness makes you ages a lot more than normal. You are lucky to reach old age without serious illness

..i can relate to Frank/Francis going thru personal problems, depression, thoughts of suicide/suicide attempts and isolation. also, Kitty - who went thru a near-death situation due to anxiety caused by neighbors. but i still try to smile and keep a sense of humor like Doris. she also was not going to make it and prefers to live alone. life is short and its not worth it when you try and try to reach out to others but to no avail. that's me.....(and yes Doris, you were a blessing for me today - wherever you are).

I watched this just now and what a lovely lady Doris is and Kitty. I felt so sorry for the gentleman without a bath or a kitchen sink. I so hope three years after this documentary that he is ok and had some sort of help

I am a 73 year old Australian and my Government looks after us very well. They will do everything in their power to keep you in your own home instead of going into a nursing home. I have nursing and carers that visit me 7 days a week and help tend to my needs and meals and it cost nothing. Aged care allows about $140 per day (7 days per week) to pay for nursing and repairs to house. I the have my aged pension of nearly $2000.00 per month to spend how I want. Free doctors and medication plus many reductions on power, gas, rates etc. Pensioners are looked after very well, but no system is perfect, but I am very very grateful that my last years are as good as they are.
Getting ready to turn a young 55, yet feeling "old" due to spine injury of 12+ yrs and several other life threatening medical issues. She give me hope! :)

Kitty is so sweet, so gentle, has a kind heart and a good sense of humour. She looked so beautiful on her wedding day, it's sad she never had children for she would of been a wonderful mother!
Doris spoke many wise words, a lesson to us all.
There should be more help avaliable for Francis just to have his basic needs let, but he doesn't make a fuss.

Doris is my kind of lady! She tells it how it is. Kitty is so sweet yet very strong willed. And Francis, what a sweetheart. I would be ashamed of my child if they ignored me and allowed me to live in such conditions. Advocate for your elderly! They were just like you at one time in their lives, hopefully better, so they deserve better.
