According to the 1994 Sizewell B New Civil Engineer supplement, they were ready to build a 2.6GW Sizewell C for £3.5 billion (1994 prices, or around £7.5 billion in 2024 prices). Market liberalisation and privatisation have a lot to answer for.

How sad the government didn't have the foresight to extend it's life - UK REALLY needs that running right now in 2024!!!

Very interesting and relevant now as the construction of HPC is in progress and Sizewell C is going through the required legal processes. I worked for the CEGB, Nuclear Electric, British Energy and lastly EDF for more than 40 years.

One of my first jobs when I joined the UKAEA at the tender age of 16 was to support the public enquiry into the then proposed Sizewell B held at Snape Maltings nearby. Well done you for your long service to the nuclear power industry 👍

I've only been in my industry (oil and gas) for 20 years, you make me feel young, but there is something to be said for experience!
Have you seen general attitudes towards nuclear power change in that time? Either more positive, or less positive...?

Given the construction risk inherent in nuclear projects, it’s really quite impressive SZB was delivered so efficiently. Not sure the UK would have the necessary skills and know-how today.

Meh K I was specifically referring to time and budget, which we don’t yet know is deliverable

@@tob19......the body of work is not there any more.....we ( the UK ) built a lot of this stuff in the 60 ' s 70 ' s and 80 ' s ....we built things like AGR s.....safer., but more expensive than the PWR s that is the basis of most the reactors across the world.

@@robertwoodliff2536Same thing in the US, the know how has been lost cause basically no reactors got bult during a 20 year period from the 90s to early 2010s. Maybe SMRs will change that.

They’re building one now…..And building one is not very difficult. Designing one is tricky because it has to be idiot-proofed and human-error-proofed.

The dome of the B station is a thing of beauty!
I'll agree with you on the magnox "A" station though
