- Today I wondered… what’s the difference between a Siamese algae eater, Chinese algae eater, and flying fox? Because apparently some of them can get huge!

*Have you ever owned one of these animals? If so, what was their aggression level like (because I've heard some species are meaner than others)?*
I’ve owned a Siamese algae eater, they’re amazing for community tanks but I’ve never tried a Chinese algae eater or flying fox (because Chinese algae eaters grow out of eating algae and terrorize community tanks)
I currently have a Siamese Algae Eater and a Reticulated Siamese Algae Eater/Silver Flying Fox. Both of them do not bother the other fish much, but the latter chases around the Siamese Algae Eater on sight.
I haven’t kept them but in my research the Siamese algae eater is pretty peaceful and I remember seeing a tank with a bunch of juveniles swimming together and acting shy, though I hear they get territorial towards each other and similar species as they age
Chinese algae eaters are *infamous* for their size and aggression, often killing their more peaceful tankmates, so it’s generally recommended to either avoid them or keep them with other big assertive fish like cichlids
I have a really lazy Siamese algae eater, it was a champ when it was little but as it got older it basically stopped eating algae. But that is fine since its a really peaceful fish that looks really good, it has never been aggressive and as I said it was really good at eating algae when it was small. Never had a flying fox since it just seems like a worse SAE that looks maybe a little better but the SAE has a clean pattern, I would love to get a group of 6-8 in a large tank because they are like a shark but more chill and less territorial.
Never get a Chinese algae eater though, they grow so fast and once they are adults they need a lot of protein it seems so they end up monopolizing all the food at the bottom and will even pin other fish to the glass for their slime coat. I cant think of a single situation I would want one for, though they may be able to hold their own with larger fish.
I have (right now) a chinese algae eater and it used to hurt one of my corydoras so i thought he was just lonely and i bought a pleco and now they became best friends and the chinese algae eater doesnt attack any of my fishes anymore
6inch is more than sufficient guys, don't let anyone tell you otherwise 💪🏻
6in club 😂
Besides becoming too big for most peoples fish tanks the Chinese algae-eater is also known for becoming a terror to other inhabitants of the tanks as it grows older.
How is the Flying Fox? Thinking about getting one or two.
do Chinese algae eaters eat red cherry shrimp?
Chinese algae eaters are almost always a bad choice for aquariums. They will be a good community fish for a months after purchase, but will become aggressive and extremely fast, and difficult to catch. Please do not get it unless you are completely sure its right.
do Chinese algae eaters eat red cherry shrimp?
@@Meatballs01same question ❓
Yes they do
Oof 😅
They're all way too big for my aquarium, so I'll stick with my one loveable blue mystery snail and a single nerite. They do a fantastic job! I've never once cleaned algae off my glass; blue also cleans the bottom and the plants and nerite helps keep the wood clean.
Also important note that chinese algea eaters are pretty aggresive. Keep that in mind while selecting one
To add a little more, the flying fox is in the same genus as the rainbow shark (Epalzeorhynchos), so if you want a something that acts and is shaped like a rainbow shark, but you don't like the color, you can get a flying fox instead.
There's also the Cambodian Logsucker, or False Siamese Algae Eater. At my pet store they sell these instead of Flying Foxes.
I asked a Petco employee for a small bottom feeder for my 5 gallon tank which has a few guppies in it. He recommend the Chinese algae eater because “they only get about 2 inches”. I went home with them and did a little research… these guys get a foot long 😂
I ended up with two albino Chinese algea eaters because they are “friendly community fish and great cleaners” One killed the other a few days later and terrorized my platies and young mollies to the point I was forced to put him with my male betta. For some reason the two aggressive fish mostly leave each other alone.
i should have seen this a week ago ..
I got rid of my Chinese algae eater last summer not because of the size but because they’re so aggressive and territorial he was killing my community tank best to keep those guys with cichlids or other aggressive fish species
And what about the Garra cambodgiensis "Cambodian log sucker"? Yet another of the look-alikes that is currently being sold in my local shops misidentified as flying fox.
My siamese algae eater destroys any live plant I buy😭 but I love his chonky lil face and can’t give him away..
Chinese algae eaters have earned their reputation. What surprised me is Siamese algae eaters can also get big (normally sold when 1-2") and can harrass other fish, especially otocinclus. You can reduce aggression by having numerous SAEs, but in my 100 gallon it was just too much trouble so I removed the SAEs (it wasn't easy) and rely upon my otos and shrimp for algae patrol.
I’m so glad I was never interested in these fish because I was completely unaware they grew that large
Lol just added simase algea eaters into my 55g tank
Just done setting everything up
Thanks for explaining the differences. Good to know. 👍🍄
This difference is easy. The hard part is when the stores try to sell you flying foxes or Cambodian logsuckers. Those are MUCH harder to tell apart from SAE.
I used have lots of Chinese Algae Eaters back in the 80s and 90s
I love flying foxes, they are a solid favorite of mine.
Any problems with them thinking about getting one
Impulsively bought a golden algae eater today bc I have a good amount of growth. I didn't realize they grow to 11 inches. My tank is only a 29 gallon... idk what I'm gonna do tbh 😫
Same here, I bought three and they were the first fish I introduced into my 55g aquarium. Two months in and they've almost grown into the size of my brilliant rasboras which are a little over 2". So far they've not shown any substantial aggression and just take a seemingly innocent nip once in a while on the rasboras which then whoosh off and have been pretty much minding their business. Gotta admit they're pretty fast and almost impossible to catch especially if you have a heavily planted aquarium.
Miss ya lady, hope all is well, God bless you.
What fish can live with a male betta?
Betas are overrated. I have two gold fish and a pleco in a 10 gallon tank. Can't go wrong. 🐟
@@mgtowcowboy8159 He asked which fish live with a male bett. Not your opinion about Bettas being overrated or not, what a donut.
@@mgtowcowboy8159that's a VERY bad stocking. It is overstocked (165 gallons worth of fish in 10 gallons) and plecos and goldfish can't proppey live together, goldfish are coldwater and plecos are tropical
Neon tetras and oto's are imo the best betta tankmates. Only problem with oto's is that they are very picky, and that they prefer to eat fresh veggies over any kind of processed food
It’s a 5 gallon though
I remember when you could easily find pygmy corydoras now they have become rare and super expensive? Any reasons?
Will you ever get another dwarf gourami? If you do I recommend a neon blue or a powder blue or maybe try a Pearl gourami!
Her last gourami was actually a blue
Wouldn’t recommend pearl gouramis personally since they get pretty big
I have a Pearl
In Japan we just call Siamese Flying Fox
Does anyone know the plant name the fish is nibbling on? The first clip of the “Siamese algae eater” I have that plant but I don’t remember the name of it?
I like my panda garra, 3 inch max and very peaceful
Do you have a TikTok? Would love to follow
Save yourself the trouble and get Ottos instead.
What would you recommend for algae/ moss eaters/ just in general for your clean up crew. That wont grow huge 😢
Otos are great. My only problem with them is that I bought six, four died, and the remaining two are fine. Seems to a common thing with them.
Siamese algae eaters are amazing
Well none, your fan from Orlando Aquashella.
Do you guys prefer a Platy or a Molly?
I prefer platies personally since they're smaller and hardier, plus they come in more colors
Ok! I agree
I have a large tank and prefer mollies, but if my biggest tank was less than 100l then definitely platys would be the way I'd go. I think they're mostly similar personality-wise, mollies to me just seem more bossy and confident than platys (especially the male mollies 🙄), but then different kinds of mollies can be completely different. Example my saffron and balloon mollies have completely different personalities, but maybe that's not something general people would notice 😅😅
I just love me a big fish
I don’t agree but I like your reasoning
Well, I'm glad I know that now. I got a Chinese algae-eater without knowing they got that big. At least now I can plan out getting a bigger tank or rehoming the fella when he gets too big 😂
Do you not know what metric is?
IF YOU ARE TEACHING “SPEAK SLOWER”😣‼️‼️‼️
Yeah Chinese are horribly aggresive
