I think for me it’s not necessarily even specific fish but my list of five fish/groups of fish: 1. Livebearers (I’m genuinely scared of how quickly they reproduce, they are really cool but it’s just so many babies) 2. African cichlids, I just don’t like any of them enough to override my need for plants in my tank 3. Flower horns I don’t like the horn, if they didn’t have the horn and were able to be kept in a tank with a little more hardscape or plants I’d probably like them a little more. I really like seeing my fish interact with its environment 4. Any of the large plecos, my friend has a good few and the amount of times they’ve dislodged filters and messed up tanks makes it a no for me 5. anual killis im too sentimental and 12-18 months with a fish is too short for my little heart
I keep one of them, it has survived all kinds of situations all other fish I kept didn't, it's huge for the tank where it's living and... ahhh!! I can't get rid of it either 😰 I mean, I agree with you, I'll never keep another pleco again
I kept a common pleco in my 55 gallon (parents got it as an algae eater for the tank) and it was actually my favorite fish, made sure he was well fed, but he was very big and *very* messy Broke my heart when he passed away but next time I’ll be sticking with bristlenose
I adopted one years ago from a friend who was moving and man yeah, the amount of tank upgrades i’ve gone through for the dang pleco. Currently i’m working on a heated pond for it
Goldfish? They grow about the same size as most cichlids (4-6 inches in most cases), have amazing personalities, are entirely peaceful and completely unfussy in terms of food and temperature. How can anyone resist those cuties? For me it's always been the #1 fish to keep. In love with them.

Mostly agree with your list. I'll allow Koi for large outdoor ponds, but they don't float my boat. Any fish that is line or cross bred (certain fancy goldfish, flowerhorns, etc.) are a definite no in my book. Other dishonourable mentions would include common pleco and any sort of glow fish at all. Hi, and thanks for invite and information. I have been in and (out) of the hobby since 1980. Like many, I have seen many changes. Luckily there is new information and a slant toward humane animal treatment and environmental awareness. I keep only fish that grow to five inches or less, and except prepared food and local water parameters. It is best to think long term; life has a way of affecting your plans and abilities. It is usually much easier to acquire fish and aquariums than give them away, (get rid of). I try to remember to treat fish humanely especially when tempted at the lfs, I avoid bala sharks for example. Be well.
Definitely agree on your list! If the Flowerhorns didn't have the bump, maybe because they are beautiful and great personality. But, that bump is so weird! If there's a 6th one that I'd add, it's any type of modified fish like a glowfish or Balloon style fish. I just don't care for fake looking mods.
The cost of many fish stops me from keeping them. All those fancy plecos are some of them. Discus while beautiful, I don't trust myself to be a good enough fish keeper not to lose them. If I want the koi look I'd go with red koi anggels.
I totally agree with your list. For myself, I have no interest in livebearers. I want to control how many fish are in my tank and I don't want to see babies get eaten. I will never own another Pleco either. With shipping I paid over $100 for a small Snowball Pleco. I literally never see it because it hides in its cave all the time. What a waste of money for a fish that I can't even enjoy. Finally, no eels or loaches for me. They remind me of snakes, lol!
How did you guess my list? 😂 I'd add ballon belly fish and any of those goldfish that have a hard time swimming because of their deformities. Glofish as well... While they're a lot better for the fish than tattoos or dyes, I just can't get into the weird colors. Also things that get too big for any normal home aquarium like alligator gar and redtailed catfish, but those should probably go without saying.
100% agree with you not only would I ever have a tank big enough I will never have the budget for them either but just personally I am not a fan of these types of fish I like smaller fish if I was to ever keep a large fish I would have to try out an oscar 😊
1. I agree with you on the piranha. They're pretty boring. Not that pretty. It's pretty stressful to do maintenance on the inside of the tank. They are skittish as all get out. 2. I likely, unless my situation changes where I can get an 8ft tank, will never get another SILVER arowana. They just get too big. That said, I would get jardini, and I currently keep the black aro, so I'm only partially on board with you there. 3. Pacu. They just get too big. You need something in the 2 to 3 THOUASAND gallon range to keep them, and I'm never going to have pockets deep enough to get a tank that big. 4. Any of the monster catfish, including the Redtail. Same issue as the pacu and silver arowana. Too gollram big. 5. Most nano fish. Why? If I want to fall to sleep, I'll turn on golf or bowling.
Great pick and great reasons throughout, but... If you ever got a pond and wanted to try koi I know you'd fall in love with them lol. There's just something about them that keeps me hooked
Very intresting video to see from you, thank you for making this one! It is understandable why you migth not keep these fish if you heave more suitable options for you. I've been keeping koi and goldfish as well, since i was a kid and even though i heave kept african cichlids for example, i still love goldfish and koi for the way they are. It is all about what you prefer, and i could not agree more with you through out this video. Thank you again and for taking your time to make this list of fish, and heave a great day.
I completely agree. My favorite fish is the shubunkin. I don't keep them because I don't have the space. They are a long commitment. I have had my fantail goldfish live for 11 -13 years. Very Long commitment. Thank you- good reasoning.
I agree about the big fish. I had to set up a 300 gallon stock tank for my common pleco, and I will never get a fish that grows so big again! I mean, I love her, but never again. lol
I agree completely on all these. As far as plecos, I do love bristle nose plecos. I have and have bred blue eyed lemon plecos. They have great little personalities and don't ever really hide.
This was a good list...Im not much on monster fish. I like looking at them but to coin your very accurate phrase. I dont want to dedicate that much tank space to so little fish. I appreciate your always educational video's !! Thanks
I’ve kept piranhas with convict cichlids and common pleco just fine , also have kept flowerhorn in South American cichlid communities but you have to get the flower horn as a baby and introduce him as the smallest fish for it to work , also had a flower horn that lived with a gold severum before
1) Yes, piranhas are dangerous, and not particularly beautiful or interesting. 2) The flowerhorn hybrid should have never been developed in the first place. 3) Arowanas are too big. 4) Goldfish are a nice, cool water aquarium fish, so long as they’re normal, and have not been bred into deformed freaks. Koi are too big. Ponds are cool, but you don’t get to watch the fish from the side, which is a game changer. 5) Loricariids are cool, but it’s true; like most catfishes, they are not very active during the day, and plecos hide more than most.
I know what everybody's saying about the one tank for one fish. But I love my Midas. In my 75 gallon tank. Every time I walk into the living room he gets so excited to see me. And I know I could get some Oscars. But my thing is I have five kids. So just having one fish is a lot easier to keep up with maintenance and feeding.
It's like when we were kids and we'd catch some baby Bullheads, keep them for a little while and return them to the river they came from. That's the only way I'd keep these fish, temporarily and put them back.
I think my space limitations work in my favour - currently enjoying my Nothos ('they can live in an elephant's footprint', tho realistically I'd allow them a bit more space than that). The short lifespan's a negative obviously, but they're otherwise uncomplicated lively things, pretty low maintenance, and the males are spectacular.
I agree with most of your choices and I certainly agree with what you said about people being free to disagree. I like goldfish and koi, especially goldfish. I would rather have them than Oscars, shocking, I know. I have tried Lake Malawi cichlids and really got tired of the aggression. My water works easily for them but I prefer easier going fish.
Had a flowerhorn for two years and it was the biggest and most intelligent fish I ever had. Lots of personality. I wouldn't have one again though...75 gallons just wasn't big enough for him to thrive, head injuries, can't have other fish or much decor. Just all around a cumbersome fish.
I also agree with your choices. We have a small rubber lip pleco in my grandchildren aquarium (20 L) and it is going on close to 4 years old..good deal for the price for sure and just as cool to watch
I thought that at first, but after owning 2 flowerhorns for a good couple of months I enjoy them way more than any other fish I have. They both have their own separate bare 40’s but they are so interactive and vibrant they really reward you by the way you care for them. My kids run their finger along the glass from side to side and they chase after them everytime. They both also let you pet them and will fist bump you if you put a closed fist in the tank. Anytime anyone steps into my fish room the first thing they go up to is the flowerhorns. I have from bettas, dwarf cichlids, angles, Axolotls, and the FHs. Those are what pop the most.
Hello Jason. I don't think I'll ever keep Flower horn (don't care for that nuchal hump), but I do LOVE the arowana! I don't have an 8 foot tank yet, my biggest tanks are 6 feet tanks, so I can't for now.
I mostly agree with you except goldfish and koi. My top I will never keep are Guppies, Dovii, big catfish species, Bala/Rainbow sharks, silver dollars and GloFish.
I love my shubunkins and comets, here in Ohio it's about the only larger fish that will survive winter. Definitely agree that most people don't realize how big goldfish get, and how dirty they are. Great list though thanks for sharing!
Piranha and arapaima top the list for me of fish I’ll never keep. Convict cichlids are also up there for me, if I ever do keep South American fish. On the other hand I absolutely do want a flowerhorn, my fiancee wants a water puppy someday and I’m not gonna be the one to stop her lol.
I agree with your choices 😂😂 but I have all those fish expect koi / comments 😂😂😂😂I keep everyone in the backyard pond which is huge and for example I hardly see my piranhas and usually only see my flowerhorns and the arowana in my back yard pond. I also haven’t seen my blue original breeding l239 panaques in over a year but I do see little babies every 6 months or so swimming near the shallow ends I. Between my reeds which I’ll assume it’s because the piranhanas like to take chances. Flowerhorn and his girl friend still breeding regularly the same pond which I usually have to try pull out as many baby flower horns as I can catch because they’re absolute nightmares in the pond but the golden arowan pairs doing exceptionally well and breeding every year so I’m actually happy. Wouldn’t say I’m an expert at fish keeping although I’ve had these fish and the children for nearly 7-8 years now but these aren’t the easiest to care for. If you don’t feed the pond often the piranhas start getting extra aggressive and pick on things. So I usually just toss in hundreds of neons once every three minutes that or so and just let the fish hubt. The pleco probably eat whatever leftovers they find and the occasional pellet when I remeber to toss them in
I love the fish that you listed, but for the most part they are not practical for the average hobbiest. I would rather have my animals thrive and not just be surviving. I personally dont consider plecos that get above that 6" mark. I love the L046 pleco and do plan taking the plunge and getting one, they are not for everyone. From my research I have to agree with you on them being sensitive to temperature fluctuations. 🙂
Hi! I was wondering if you could help me. I recently bought a betta fish from a local store, and its top fin has been down since I got it. Do you know if this is normal or if it might be a health issue?
I looooove the high end plecos. But I can’t justify spending what they cost unless I get back into breeding someday. Other than that, and the fact I do still have one comet goldfish left from my old Rubbermaid “pond,” I pretty much concur. I’d add vampire tetras just because I think they’re super ugly and I hate em. 😅 Plus they get huge.
I love my red devil, green terror, and convict. But I probably won’t keep them again once they pass away. They are just too aggressive. Also my red devil likes to destroy anything and everything decoration related and pulls the suction cups off the heaters 😅
I won’t buy fancy plecos or discus because I’ve found them to be a bit overpriced. I don’t buy rams anymore because they don’t like my water, so they always die. I’m not going to mess around with RO systems or water softeners and all that.
Red tail sharks are pretty bad for fighting if you get more than one. I had a regular one and an albino and they fought 24/7 . It was so bad that the other community fish were constantly stressed out. That being said it only started once they both reached maturity.
I like the Shibunkin goldfish. Koi to hard for me. If the power goes out, they just die. Goldfish like the shibunkin are easier. Survive winters here in windy city and power outages. I have my pond made out of a coffin liner. Holds 300 gallons.
Urgent Question!! My male angelfish he is about 4 or so years old and has always been extremely aggressive, so he eventually went into a 36 gallon with a few mollies and he killed them all and he also killed his female. has been alone ever since, but I'm upgrading to a 55. But his 36 gallon started leaking so I had to put him in the 20 gallon quarantine tank with my young small female , and he has already tried to attack her several times had to put a divider in. Do I just need to give him away? because in my 55 I would like several angels and a blood parrot with a few bottom dwellers
He might work just fine with the parrot. It can be realy tough to keep mulitple Angels in a 55 gallon anyway - if they pair they will become aggressive and if you have multiples that don't pair they can still be territorial.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics so will my small female also be able to go in there with him since there's enough space and she would be the only female? Because she is still young enough to be growing? It is a gravel substrate slightly a bigger rock instead of sabd also for bottom drawers I'm looking at snails.??
I need your help or opinion. I have very few cichlids 2 yellow labs 2 ob zebras and 1 red zebra, and by saturday im buying about 6 3 inches yellow lab in a 75 gallon tank. A friend is selling me one Mbuna blue Colt and 1 Mundola gold. Will they get aggressive because is only 1 of each ?
I think if I had the money I would like those expensive smaller plecos. Seeing them occasionally would be worth it to me because I do really like flashy little plecos. But I totally understand why not everyone would think putting money into a fish that is rarely seen and unlikely to breed successfully in your tank is worth it. Of your entire list I think the considerations on the plecos is probably the most useful because it isn’t really something people think about, that when you get a pleco you rarely see them.
I agree with your list. Piranha are too big an skittish and yes, boring. The flower horn bump is a big no. All the others are too big. Gold fish, I love. If I could have a big pond yes. In a tank, they just outgrow it.
I have a 13 inch pleco(hopefully it has stopped growing)in a 25 gallon community female betta tank. While my tank is crystal clear, it looks crazy with one large fish living with my bettas. I have to clean pleco 💩 off my plants and gravel once a week. Large plecos 💩 alot!! Excellent algae eater, but I agree this fish is reclusive until it acclimates to noise and movement in a room...at this point you will see it all over the tank at all hours. Not to say the fish isn't easily startled by sudden movement outside the tank.
_Pictus Cats, freshwater eels_ and _gar._ Made all those mistake back in the 90's - Never again! I also agree with the species you mentioned in the video. Stay classy my friends.
Honestly I like the *thought* of keeping big fish like goldfish and cichlids (mbuna, angelfish, even an oscar), as well as a saltwater community tank, but that is simply beyond my abilities Same for tiger barbs, and I’m also too worried about potential aggression and/or health problems with dwarf gouramis and neon tetras Edit: Oh yeah, I also used to keep hatchetfish but one by one they made their way out of a small opening in tank lid, so never gonna try those again (I actually managed to save one and I didn’t think they were gonna make it. They had an injured fin, bent out of place, but managed to go on for over a decade before finally passing away a couple weeks ago)
Agreed, FHs are pretty and colorful but those massive bulbs are not appealing and are delicate. I think they are sensitive fish too, weak DNA, susceptible to disease and swim bladder issues.
Speaking of plecos- the common plecostomus gets monstrous- over 2 feet. The stores sell them at 2 inches and people keep them in their 20 gallon tanks until they take them back to the pet shop and beg the owner to take it off their hands.
"needs a big tank" but it actually needs a pond/river! Some fish are cool, they are just not meant for anything that anyone in a normal hobby situation would have.
I agree with your choices. Goldfish and koi are overrated and overused. Butterfly koi do look very nice in a large, nicely planted and scaped pond, but I would rather do other fish like rainbowfish or African cichlids in a pond.
I had piranha a few times when I was younger. I think it is a macho thing. Flower horn, I can’t see myself having one tank for one fish. I never had an arowana and don’t know if I want one. I love goldfish but I prefer the smaller fancy type.
I have to agree with your choices in this video. I don't see the attraction to flowerhorns, they are just ugly. I'd rather have an active community tank with a few cichlids mixed in.
I think the only one I would do that you wouldn't would be the goldfish/koi. I'd love a pond and if I ever did one, I think it would be for one of those.
I agree with all five but, I tried Gold fish in the past and I would never keep them again. But someday I am rich enough I'll sure keep bunch of piranhas just to show off Lol.
My friend breeds koi in a swimming pool the adults are 4ft long.I have plecos but they are on the smaller size the rest on the list we can't keep in some states of Australia not that I would even want to keep them. And don't get me started on flower horns 😂.
Flowerhorns are a marvel of the hobby. I have 2 and their personalities are amazing. They far supersede the Oscars, I have 2 of those as well. I am a huge Flowerhorn fan and love mine.
I wouldn't get any "monster fish" for the same reason you won't get a flower horn. I'm not into guppies or bettas either.... But I think that has more to do with not wanting to be in the "in crowd" 🤔 😂
I will never keep long fin varieties of fish that makes it hard or challenging for them to swim, because I think that is cruel and not natural. For example som kinds of bettas and goldfish. For me it would make me very uncomfortable looking at my fish every day and wondering if it suffers from it's fins. It is sad when people say that bettas with big fins don't need a bid tank, because they can't swim much anyways - then I just think, well don't keep fish that can't swim properly! I will keep a plakat or wild type betta if I want that species in the future. Also other kinds of deformations is a no for me too - bubble eyes on goldfish, baloon bellys etc. Then I will probably never keep fish that need more then a 2-3 foot tank. I just like small fish more! 🙂
1 dyed/tattooed fish 2 baloon varieties of fish 3 bubble eye goldfish 4 flowehorn (find them ugly) 5 honey gourami (have tried multiple times i always get aggressive ones)
I pretty much agree on all of these fish. Another thing to consider with koi and common goldfish is that they can destroy the ecology of local waters should they escape into the wild.
For me in my fishroom ill never keep mbunas, peacocks or haps again. Much like you and the piranhas, i find them extremely boring, colorful but boring. Id love another dovi but a white one. Flowerhprns are nothing compared to them. But i agree with you on your choices
I absolutely agree with all your choices, and your reasoning!😊
The weird fancy goldfish with bubble eyes! They creep me out. Definitely another personal and divisive feature.
I won't keep any Balloon-belly fish. It makes me sad to look at them struggling to swim.
I can't stand people who buy deformed fish because they are "cute"
Me either
Agreed

I had a flowerhorn in a 90 gal. But you have to keep it alone. Its a bit sad. Mine was a picky eater as well. I wouldn't get another one.
Sorry, why can't you keep them with other fish

I agree about the big fish. I had to set up a 300 gallon stock tank for my common pleco, and I will never get a fish that grows so big again! I mean, I love her, but never again. lol
I agree completely on all these. As far as plecos, I do love bristle nose plecos. I have and have bred blue eyed lemon plecos. They have great little personalities and don't ever really hide.
I agree with you on all the fish you mentioned but I would add convict chiclids
I’ve kept a flower horn, gorgeous, and super awesome personality
This was a good list...Im not much on monster fish. I like looking at them but to coin your very accurate phrase. I dont want to dedicate that much tank space to so little fish. I appreciate your always educational video's !! Thanks
I’ve kept piranhas with convict cichlids and common pleco just fine , also have kept flowerhorn in South American cichlid communities but you have to get the flower horn as a baby and introduce him as the smallest fish for it to work , also had a flower horn that lived with a gold severum before
Have farm pond 1/2 acres had winter kill on my pond lost all game fish .its 9 at deepest so we pot koi in it in Michigan love them as they grow
Great video and I agree with most of your choices. Now please make a video on your 5 favorite fish to keep.
I agree with this list , tried flower horns ehhh not my
Thing
I also agree with your choices. We have a small rubber lip pleco in my grandchildren aquarium (20 L) and it is going on close to 4 years old..good deal for the price for sure and just as cool to watch
I like those fish!
I absolutely love goldfish. 💕
My list:
Pirahna/Pacu
Flowerhorn
Angelfish
Arrowana
Common pleco
Why Angelfish? I would like to hear your opinion.
@@anomalocarisfan45 just not a fan of their looks. I’ve never owned them so I can’t comment on ease or difficulty of care. I’ve just never need a fan
@@claywise43 Ah, ok
I've toyed with the idea of keeping a flowerhorn, and yeah one big tank for a single dude is a deterrent. But man, their colors are gorgeous.
Nothing wrong with a wet pet
Totally agree with all those.
I love,love koi and goldfish!
Imagining Joey watching and saying whaaat? All valid points!
I know. Haha
I agree with you 100%.
The pleco probably eat whatever leftovers they find and the occasional pellet when I remeber to toss them in
Aros and flowers, had them and all the trouble they give me was deeply worth it!! i dont regret a single minute i ivested in them!!
Absolutely agreed with everything except the koi 😂😂
Hi! I was wondering if you could help me. I recently bought a betta fish from a local store, and its top fin has been down since I got it. Do you know if this is normal or if it might be a health issue?
It can be normal depending on the fish.
Totally agree 👍🏼
I agree with the gold fish, I had some as a kid but I didn’t spend so much on my tank just to put a gold fish in 😂
I have a female flowerhorn in a 180 in my living room. She has personalities for days.
Plus they get huge.
Vampire tetras for sure! Good to hear from you again!
I love my red devil, green terror, and convict. But I probably won’t keep them again once they pass away. They are just too aggressive. Also my red devil likes to destroy anything and everything decoration related and pulls the suction cups off the heaters 😅
I have a few thousand in fancy pleco I very rarely see half of them unless I pull the tank apart during cleaning
I won’t buy fancy plecos or discus because I’ve found them to be a bit overpriced. I don’t buy rams anymore because they don’t like my water, so they always die. I’m not going to mess around with RO systems or water softeners and all that.
Fishes I won't keep ever!
- Axolotl
- Eels
- African Ropefish
- Kuhli Loach
- Pipefish
- Flowerhorn
Axolotl? Lol they’re amphibians, not fish
@@NotSure876 thanks for the clarification. Regardless, I still don't like them. 😄
@@ebinom8112 haha, fair enough
They’re really not ideal since they’re a colder water species
Red tail sharks are pretty bad for fighting if you get more than one. I had a regular one and an albino and they fought 24/7 . It was so bad that the other community fish were constantly stressed out. That being said it only started once they both reached maturity.
Very true!
I love my sharks just can't keep two in same tank
I kinda like flower horns but well I agree
I must have gotten lucky with my bristlenose. I see them all the time. They had babies in a tank full of two hundred guppies and they have no fear.
Ya I might stay away from the other two.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics You are the best! Thank you
I think if I had the money I would like those expensive smaller plecos.
It should probably move as soon as you can. They tend to keep growing!
_Pictus Cats, freshwater eels_ and _gar._
Made all those mistake back in the 90's - Never again!
I also agree with the species you mentioned in the video.
Stay classy my friends.
Honestly I like the *thought* of keeping big fish like goldfish and cichlids (mbuna, angelfish, even an oscar), as well as a saltwater community tank, but that is simply beyond my abilities
Same for tiger barbs, and I’m also too worried about potential aggression and/or health problems with dwarf gouramis and neon tetras
Edit: Oh yeah, I also used to keep hatchetfish but one by one they made their way out of a small opening in tank lid, so never gonna try those again
(I actually managed to save one and I didn’t think they were gonna make it. They had an injured fin, bent out of place, but managed to go on for over a decade before finally passing away a couple weeks ago)
Perfectly logical to me....(big fish = big poop as well)
Silver Dollar Club... I love em...!
Ditto on flowerhorn and piranha
Iv got a flowerhorn hes very aggressive but easy to look after he plays alot eats well but boring after awhile watching 1 fish in such a big space..
I have 9 goldfish in a 120. I love that aquarium
Ya, the fancy goldfish are definitely easier to house!
Wolf Cichlid. I've been in the hobby long enough to remember people keeping Snakeheads. I assume that's illegal now.
I agree on all of these. The flowerhorn in particular looks deformed
Flowerhorn! could'nt agree with you more regarding their Tumerous appearance.
I have pacus but if i have to start again.i won't. They grow big.nip fins, nip.power cords and tank busters.
Flowerhorns are a marvel of the hobby. I have 2 and their personalities are amazing. They far supersede the Oscars, I have 2 of those as well. I am a huge Flowerhorn fan and love mine.
I had an elephant snail I named Lazarus for obvious reasons. No idea where it it now
I wouldn't get any "monster fish" for the same reason you won't get a flower horn.
You must be the only fish keeping channel who does not send t shirts to the uk,have them from every other one
Rrrrrr 😀
Flowerhorns reminds me of the aliens in the very first episode of Star Trek whom Captain Pike encountered.
Pacu
Pleco
Goldfish
Koi carp
Any GMO fish
1 dyed/tattooed fish
2 baloon varieties of fish
3 bubble eye goldfish
4 flowehorn (find them ugly)
5 honey gourami (have tried multiple times i always get aggressive ones)
Arapaima, Pacu, Common pleco for me for obvious reasons
I pretty much agree on all of these fish. Another thing to consider with koi and common goldfish is that they can destroy the ecology of local waters should they escape into the wild.
Good point!
For me in my fishroom ill never keep mbunas, peacocks or haps again. Much like you and the piranhas, i find them extremely boring, colorful but boring. Id love another dovi but a white one. Flowerhprns are nothing compared to them. But i agree with you on your choices
