Now: The principle is that a tanks gun kills tanks primarily with the speed of the projectile! But due to the sound barrier there is a definate range to that (say about 7-800 m) which is also the distance where you can use direct fire. Guided missiles have a minimum range of around said distance - thing has to leave the tube, gather to line of sight, etc. The target will have moved and you need to have the guidance system to correct for that - leaving out a lot of the guesswork in tank gunnery. On the shorter ranges the speed of the projectile and the flat trajectory does not leave the target time to do very much. In a brawl you need BOTH. You can of course have units with a mixture of both. But my preference is to have the tank in tank units and ATGM in their units. This means that I prefer mounting the ATGM on the Infantry combat vehicle - OK with a limited number of missiles - 30 missiles pr. vehicle seems to be overstocking. If you need more for the next day or so - it is probably better to have them flown in with a tactical transport. The primary protection of the infantry against tanks close in is in the dismounts. But the real tank killer is to have the tanks come into the fight when things get close and dirty. As You might understand: I think combined arms is the idea: Cavalry, Artillery AND Infantry. One should note that tanks is the CHEAP part of the solution, because a tank has a crew of 3-4 and an infantry combat vehicle has about 9-11 - and what costs money is the pay for the troops (and their training). It is a grave mistake to assume that infantry is the cheap part - it isn't. The figures I've seen (quite some years back now) was that a squdrons (company) of tanks was about 2/3 of the price of a company of infantry. For compareable protection and mobility. Another misconception is that conscripts are cheap - they are not. The time in basic training is wasted after 2 years. And the basic training takes a year - and then in practise thrown away. Basic training of less than a year is basically a waste of time and money, because in a real fight undertrained personel gets killed - fast and achieve nothing.

Don’t have anther ptsd flashback of Sheikh of the slaughterers, The prince of darkness- Abu Musab al Zarqawi (May God Reward him for defending Iraqi Muslims and forgive him for his mistakes)
This is the direction I expect the tank destroyer concept will continue to go. ATGMs make more sense than a massive gun if your only purpose is to destroy tanks. A cannon is more versatile but tank destroyers were never meant to be versatile.
Let's be honest, hundreds of military programs are doomed to fail in any military around the world. But what these programs do help with is advancing specific components and technologies which, even though the program that wanted to use this technology was doomed to fail, the lessons learned and the time and money spent proving the effectiveness of some of these systems is priceless as this weapon's system did for the entire Soviet ATGM post designs and weapons.
ATGM is a weapon that needs to be reinvented, as all APS on the market like ADS Rheinmetall, Iron Fist Elbit, Teopht Rafael when installed on MBTs make the missiles ineffective. Only 120mm APFSDS round fired by another MBT can be effective against APS.
I think one of the best ATGM vehicles the Soviets had was the 2P26 mounted on the GAZ-69 light truck. There has never been a better case of Hide in Plain Sight.
Well this thing is scary as fuck, if you've ever been an armored vehicles or military vehicle driver or personnel like I was, this would ruin your day if it hit your rig..
It's funny to see when at the time atgms was considered even more powerful than tank canons(when apfsds weren’t invented yet?) and the soviet pancake was designed as a TD with a 180mm missile. It's the wonky interim period between ww2 and the early cold wars where we find these soviet gems
APFSDS came into service in the very late 70's when the west learned the Russians where using a lot of composite and reactive armour on the T-72 and T-80 tanks making HEAT shells far less effective. APDS development stopped in the late 1950's when large 105mm HEAT shells where found to be amazingly effective against steel armour. There was a 15 year gap between the last APDS entering service for the 105mm and development starting for the first APFSDS for the 105mm gun. Edit You will find mention of the US issuing the M728 APDS in the early 70's but that is a US built version of the British L52 that entered service in the early 1960's and that entered development in 1958.
Tank destroyers and light tanks are pretty much the same in modern times. For example, the Russian 2S25 Sprut-SD can be referred to as either a light tank or a tank destroyer.
Was that a Panzer III in the beginning? Also I think the Fritz X glide bomb was probably the precursor to the ATGM. Brilliant video as always. I too love how the missile just pops out the turret and zooms away in a blase of fire.
Maybe in real world applications not so practical. But in Armoured Warfare, it's absolutely brilliant the missiles can turn 90 degrees. An my hit ratio is at least 90%. An get hit buy this missile an your day is done. An the loading is so cool !!. Luv this thing. Aussie Scott.
God could you imagine if the use modern day missles in it? That thing would be a force to reckoned with. You could have a drone just marking targets or get a request for infantry for fire support. Great video now i want see chieftain do a video on it. Got know how to adjust that track tension. Lol
great vid my brother, people think being in this lock down is hard and stress full!! they should try lock down for four days in a 60 ton tank with three guys who on the weekend binged on beer and chinese food and the exhaust fan don't work in the tank😂
LeOn Mk Actually no. The T114 was way smaller, and was parachute droppable. The M113 wasn’t. Plus, the T114 didn’t last in the BAT variant. They were converted to troop carriers, and were dropped from service shortly after arriving in Vietnam
Since You are on the topic: There should be a couple of German vehicles - from the same periond - in the category that might be interesting to look at: Kanonenjagdpanzer en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanonenjagdpanzer Where the idea was to take the BK90/L40 gun from the M47 Patton (must have had lots of ammo lying around) - get rid of the ruddy turret and save 40% of the weight. Putting a decent engine into it and double the speed. Third property was reducing hight relative to the tank solution - Leopard 1 - with 17% (1/3 with repect to the Patton). Problem was that with the T64 coming on line the 90 mm gun just did not cut it. That led to the Raketjagdpanzer 2 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raketenjagdpanzer_2 Which used missiles to hit at long range. The idea in itself is not a bad one: They are easy to hide, have great tactical mobility and are cheap to build and operate.
Matsimus why do American tank destroyers carry 2 ATGMs like the M1134 Stryker or the M901 ITV. When the Soviet’s has that BRDM with 5 ATGMs. Was there a reason for having less ATGMs?
I've been wondering if we could make a tank destroyer out of a vehicle only a little bigger than a German Wiesel. We could load it up with Javelin anti tank missiles, and put the necessary electronics into the vehicle. We could make it where it could fire multiple missiles, all controlled by electronics inside the vehicle. If we could network it in to an air to ground radar similar to the Longbow Apache's, or just a helicopter drone, and have this air to ground radar covering the entire battlefield, with no seams. That's a system that would be hard to beat.

Do you have a video of the M-60A2?
Keep the content coming Mat, your doing alright for a limey mechanic / a Canac gunner officer , stay safe mate.
Thanks man! haha! :-)
Haha long live The Islamic State Caliphate. Still here REMAINING as much as the cross worshippers and Zionist’s hate it.
Very good and informative video. Never knew this existed.
My God, pz III abuse at the start of the video is simply horrible
I think one of the best ATGM vehicles the Soviets had was the 2P26 mounted on the GAZ-69 light truck. There has never been a better case of Hide in Plain Sight.
3:52 TC i use AK because HMG no work. I just noticed he also did it with one hand
Firing the AK with one hand is much more fun. Just look at all the Middle Eastern wedding celebration videos.

When Stalin ordered wargaming to get a Soviet version of Sheredian
Hey Matt :) Will there be a video about the German Jaguar?
Well this thing is scary as fuck, if you've ever been an armored vehicles or military vehicle driver or personnel like I was, this would ruin your day if it hit your rig..
Now I want a foldable, pop-out tank.
Press F for the destroyed PzIII at the beginning
Damn...
that intro gave me star wars vibe.
"Wait, that tank doesnt have a gun... whats it doing?"
IT1: "SHUPRIZE, IS MISSILE!"
*Gunner!! Target that thing it has no gun!*
"Flips a rocket from the top of its turret"
*OH SHIT*
I'm an animator and I just jizzed in my pants looking at how that ATGM deploys.
Edit
You will find mention of the US issuing the M728 APDS in the early 70's but that is a US built version of the British L52 that entered service in the early 1960's and that entered development in 1958.

@dandoosh garra And before that there was the 100mm Anti tank gun T-12
I like looking at things that were HIGHLY classified when I was a kid!
Tank destroyers and light tanks are pretty much the same in modern times. For example, the Russian 2S25 Sprut-SD
can be referred to as either a light tank or a tank destroyer.
I wish they had this in wargame red dragon this would be another meme unit
It's in war thunder
@@spazmonkey2131 I know but in wargame red dragon this unit would be a total meme unit
@@intelligentgrawlix794 I agree, imagine just smacking someone's tanks with it
Was that a Panzer III in the beginning? Also I think the Fritz X glide bomb was probably the precursor to the ATGM. Brilliant video as always. I too love how the missile just pops out the turret and zooms away in a blase of fire.
was that a Panzer III used for target practice?
Yes, T-III
"Scorpion rocket installed,sir!"
In the opening video what were they shooting at? It looked like a panzer 3?
That's cool movement
Maybe in real world applications not so practical. But in Armoured Warfare, it's absolutely brilliant the missiles can turn 90 degrees. An my hit ratio is at least 90%. An get hit buy this missile an your day is done. An the loading is so cool !!. Luv this thing. Aussie Scott.
Gotta admit, that rocket jacket getting ripped off makes it look menacing af
4:04 Megatron arrives.
Seeing that flip up only one thing went through my head:
Johnny 5 is alive!
at 0:25 is that a panzer III they are shooting at?
God could you imagine if the use modern day missles in it? That thing would be a force to reckoned with. You could have a drone just marking targets or get a request for infantry for fire support.
Great video now i want see chieftain do a video on it. Got know how to adjust that track tension. Lol
great vid my brother, people think being in this lock down is hard and stress full!! they should try lock down for four days in a 60 ton tank with three guys who on the weekend binged on beer and chinese food and the exhaust fan don't work in the tank😂
I would like to see a T114 Battalion Anti-Tank video sometime soon. That thing is a very interesting topic
well actually no.. just a better M113 with a recoilless rifle
LeOn Mk
Actually no. The T114 was way smaller, and was parachute droppable. The M113 wasn’t. Plus, the T114 didn’t last in the BAT variant. They were converted to troop carriers, and were dropped from service shortly after arriving in Vietnam
9:06 for Start of the Video
Since You are on the topic: There should be a couple of German vehicles - from the same periond - in the category that might be interesting to look at:
Kanonenjagdpanzer
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanonenjagdpanzer
Where the idea was to take the BK90/L40 gun from the M47 Patton (must have had lots of ammo lying around) - get rid of the ruddy turret and save 40% of the weight. Putting a decent engine into it and double the speed. Third property was reducing hight relative to the tank solution - Leopard 1 - with 17% (1/3 with repect to the Patton). Problem was that with the T64 coming on line the 90 mm gun just did not cut it.
That led to the Raketjagdpanzer 2
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raketenjagdpanzer_2
Which used missiles to hit at long range.
The idea in itself is not a bad one: They are easy to hide, have great tactical mobility and are cheap to build and operate.
Oof I legit did not know this existed I found out in a tank game called tanktastic nice video btw
I figured out it existed from armoured warfare
Your tank is no match for my tank-mounted anti-tank tank missile!
Then the T-72 variant would be named IT - Chapter II
БМПТ

Very interesting video.
So a Turretless T-62 Tank but fitted with an ATGM? I can say that's surreal
It’s actually got a fully articulated turret
Dude this looks Kuhl AF! It's just what I need for a daily commute here in New Jersey.
Wait - WHAT! Amphibious versions!?!?!? 😮
Bro that's even better than the Speed Racer/Gigantor cartoons I grew up on!
This vehicle is the bane of my warthunder career
