  • Homologation cars are something of a favourite subject in the Goodwood office. Over the years there have been hundreds of them and it's fairly hard to choose a favourite nine. However, after much discussion, we've whittled down the extensive list of road-going racers.
So sit back and drink in the magic of a homologation. Let us know which your favourite was in the comments.

My favorite homologation specials are the 1987/88 Chevy Monte Carlo/Pontiac Grand Am Aerobacks.
At the time GM was having a very hard time besting ford's ultra dominant thunderbird in Nascar.
First they tried using engines meant for drag racing to match the performance of the Ford V8 that was almost certainly putting out 600+ horsepower in practice and qualifying trim but that failed so they hit upon the idea of improving the areo of their cars.
They did this by putting in a large curved rear window that aided airflow over the rear wing, but Nascar said "no no no, you must build and sell 2000 of each car to qualify to race it" so they did.
It didn't work but there's 4000 of them out in the wilds.

The Godfather of all modern homologation specials (IMO) was the Porsche 917. The FIA had tweaked the group 6 rules to effectively curb the viability of limited production number prototypes (read: the Ford GT40 Mk. IV) in order return to something more akin to what they had in the early ‘60s - low-number production cars which were equal parts road and race car (think the Ferrari GT cars of that era.)
Porsche built 25 copies of an absolute racing prototype the likes of which no one had seen before and happily lined them all up for a photo op for the incredulous FIA inspectors.
One was even converted to road legal use and it ushered in a decade where Porsche worked the FIA like a boxer would a speed bag.

One thing that wasn't mentioned about the CLK GTR in this video: Mercedes had a very short time to develop the car (128 days to be exact) in 1996. One reeeaaally cheeky thing they (along with AMG) did in speeding this up was by taking a Mclaren F1 GTR and then both grafting on their own bodywork (Which wasn't quite finalized yet) as well as swapping out the BMW V12 with their own V12 while still designing the chassis. That's an entirely different level of being cheeky with the rules.

You forgot to mention 400 (200 ini actual homologated-built) LANCIA 037 as prerequisite to enter WRC 1983 season, which staggeringly won constructors champion ahead of arch rival Audi in that season.

Man I hate that the Toyota GR Yaris costs 40000 in Holland, purely because of the emissions taxes…
Edit: The Nissan R390 is my favourite car ever, I love it!
Edit 2: The craziest thing for me is that the Mercedes CLK-GTR still looks very modern, so does the 911 GT1, though you do recognise the headlights, also, the Dauer is just, _chef’s kiss_ .

I would have made this a top 10 list and added Toyota GT1. Didn’t win Le Mans but damn what a great looking car. Bonus, you could have shown footage of it racing the flying AMG-Mercedes CLR, another phenomenally beautiful “homologated” car/aircraft?

What about the Toyota GT ONE? Only one was ever made. I think it sits here in germany's Toyota Racing "plant". JP performance showed it in one of his visits there. Or the E46 M3 GTR and other road legal GTR cars? Still an amazing list!

The two 993-look 911 GT1s were prototypes, not the original Strassenversion production cars. The actual Strassenversion production cars had the 996-look. Then there was the final GT1-98.
