Space Hulk was my first GW game I bought back in 1989 for £20 I just walked into a GW shop and bought it! I currently own copies of the 2nd and 3rd editions. 2nd edition used to be the black sheep of the Space Hulk family but it has some interesting features which I feel should have been carried through to following editions. Although SH is a great game it does have its shortcomings; some of the layouts take a long time to put together and some of the missions can take a long time to play. I’d only be interested in buying a new copy of the game if it addressed these issues. SH is a work of genius and with a little tweaking could be even better in my opinion. It’s original creator Richard Halliwell passed away a couple of years ago I only hope he was aware how much pleasure his creation gave to so many people.

Recently just played through the whole campaign with a buddy, we had a great time. Also deserves praise for giving us the rebirth of the glorious Genestealer Cults!

I just bought STLs for modular spaceship corridor terrain to print 3d space hulk boards. You can also print your own counters and either buy/proxy terminator and genestealer models. It's just rules and missions that you have to own/find. I personally prefer 1st edition rules for a much tighter game, but then, unless you can find the even harder to come buy expansion rules/missions, you're pretty limited to nearly everything being clones of each other.
That all said, one of the BIG advantages of the original box versions is those tiny little terminators means it's much easier to fit the board on a table. A board sized to modern terminator figures is a much, much larger footprint.

It also gives you a model of Mephiston (before he became Mephiston). It's a shame they didn't do any expansion packs like they did with 2nd edition, but GW doesn't like to make money. If anyone wants to play a game like this, might I suggest "Aliens: Another Glorious Day in The Corps" and its expanson pack "Ultimate Badasses". This will give you all of the Marines and characters from the film. There is also a "Sulaco Survivors" Pack which gives you Bishop, broken Bishop, Ripley carrying Ripley and Ripley piloting the loader, "We're in the Pipe Five by Five" gives you the twp pilots from the dropship and the Alien Queen pack too.

I like it a lot too, Adam. Back in the day, GW would gift games as prizes at launch, and I was lucky enough to receive the 1ed box set. The rules were tight and playable, and the scenarios mostly were challenging. It went a bit off the rails with the 2nd and 3rd supplements, but I'd call it a very successful design. And when they figured it had sold as many minis as it could, it was discontinued. I immediately bought the third edition during the brief window when it was available and recently acquired the non-mini parts of the fourth edition.
I agree it should be an evergreen title and widely available, but GWs works in mysterious ways....

Heroquest recently got a remake, maybe the same company will also do Space Crusade? They'd have to disconnect it from the 40k lore to avoid legal snarls, but would be easy to make generic space trooper squads vs. aliens.

    • @shaggybaggums
      @shaggybaggums Год назад

Heroquest was my first, as a Christmas present, with Space Crusade the year after. Me and my brothers played them every weekend for a while. Good times.
I managed to snag the display copy of the first Space Hulk and all the expansion stuff as it was being discontinued. It was a bit beat up but better than nothing.
For a long time I preferred games like these over the full tabletop experience, I always regretted being too late for the original Space Fleet.
But then came Epic Space Marine and Adeptus Titanicus and I went crazy about terrain building, the hobby always had a different direction to go in if you wanted to try something different.
Now GW seemed more interested in renting out their IP. I get why, it's practically free money, At least for a while.
But if you want people to buy stuff, you have to sell stuff. At least the latest edition of 40K and Epic is a move back in that direction.
I never got why the earlier video games focused on genres foreign to the hobby, FPS for example.
A digital version of 40K, turn based like the table top, with factions sold as expansions, new units as DLC, and even terrain packs for creating maps (desert, urban, forge world and so on). That is something I would've paid for.
As me and my brothers got older, family priorities kept us too busy to build armies and such a video game would've allowed us to keep playing. Feels like a missed opportunity, the people who were playing on the tabletop, or even just enjoying the painting, would not have stopped buying physical products.
But a faithful digital recreation of the game would've allowed more people to keep up with the hobby.
TLDR: I think I still have my old Hero Quest somewhere. Time to go dig out the old Browd Sowd. Which is obviously the best thing about Heroquest.

One of the best game mechanics from the 1st edition deathwing expansion had players look over the mission and before deciding which player would play the Terminators or 'Nids, players would bid a number of 'squad creation points'. The player who bid the lowest would become the space marine player and then use the points to construct their squad(s) of Terminators for the mission. This has a unique way to 'self balance' the missions for experienced players, by basically asking each player, "How few resources could you use and still win this game?". I wish they would have carried that into 2nd and 3rd and 3.5 editions. Still one of my favorite games!

I have .pdf(s) found online from the original Citadel Website of the original board pieces from all the board extensions, Deathwing and Genestealer, the ones you could get a dreadnought on with 3 and 4 wide rooms... The plan is to get them printed and aquadacked to thin balsa to make a massive map some day... I use the map pieces I have from the original sets as indoor battles all the time, I also made a campaign for solo play for genestealers vs terminators (me), using initiative roll for charging or ducking to nearest cover for the movement of the genestealers. I was using a wound chart from Compendium and 4th Edition 40k Rules for campaigns, pretty brutal for the Termies as they only had 1 wound and 5 weapon skill, versus WS 7 and W 2 for stealers... Let's just say they never completed most of the Space Hulk Missions under 4th Edition, but I will give it wiz under 10th or 9th with the extra wounds and toughness, plus 1 wound stealers. Which reminds me of the original Rapid Fire Dice (sustained Fire dice), with a Jam... Wish they would bring those back.

They did reprint Space Hulk 4th edition in Nov 2016 and it wasn't selling well at all, staying in the store throughout the first few months of 2017 before being retired entirely by GW. Mainly because the price was 135USD, for 150 people could just get Burning of Prospero, which go on sale the previous month, and arguably one of the best boxset GW has every produced, or any of GW quarterly battlebox for 150 would still be a more enticing purchase than Space Hulk. They were my first ever 40k models, as we had been playing Warhammer Fantasy only up until it's death. Over the years I have always come back to it and have had a lot of fun and closure. The unlike foes make for a very interesting match.
In 2020 I decided to paint it, as the free time during the pandemic gave my hobbying a much needed impetus. I tried my best following a painting guide (even painting the individual shoulder pads pictured in the lore booklet) and I gotta say, I'm proud of those minis. They won't win an award, but they're nice and make for great player immersion.

I did own a copy of the 2013 print-run but regretfully had to sell it a few years back. If GW did bring it back, they'd likely insist on making all the doors fully plastic and then charge something like £175 for it - it was £75 last time it round.

I purchased my first copy of Space Hulk in 2014 (so 4th ed) and have loved it ever since to the point that is all I exclusively play for at least the past 5 years or so (luckily my gaming partner is of the same mind). Starting 2 years ago, we embarked on playing every terminator mission published and have about 45 more to go to completion (we average 2 games a month due to "life" events :-) This game is an example, in my opinion, of GW leaving money on the table! Even if they didn't come out with a new edition, they could certainly push out a new mission set every so often...those would go like hotcakes! Great video!

I just got home from a tabletop convention (TactiCon in Aurora, CO) and played my first game of Space Hulk on a 18'x3' table. It was massive, all 3d printed, and I had a blast. Not something I'll want to play every day, but it scratched the itch for a tactical thinky game and was just what I needed.

I also discovered Space Hulk long ago (I want to say 1990?) and was so obsessed with it. I was already painting 40k miniatures, however, not playing 40k. Space Hulk was the first Miniature game I played (not including D&D, which goes back to like '84 for me, and really isn't the same thing - models were more for reference, IMHO)
Like you, back in '09 or whenever they released the "limited edition" Space Hulk, I bought it, assembled and partially painted the Blood Angels terminators for 40k.... then quit the hobby (short version, age and vision caught up with me, and mini painting wasn't working)
Currently, in the last month, (and with new glasses) I've started revisiting the hobby, even bought Age Of Darkness, and have begun a new army. I can truly say, Space Hulk is one of the most enjoyable board games around. If anyone out there has access to it, or can afford a copy (ANY edition) on ebay, etc. I doubt you'd be disappointed. I discovered it back when the movie Aliens was still kind of new, and it gave that stomach dropping feel as the Terminator player! One thing I hoped you would have mentioned, was the classic version used to have solo player rules. (Unless my old brain just makes stuff up!) - Just googled it quick, It did! Anyways... I used to play solo, when nobody was around, or wanted to play it, AGAIN... hahahaa!
Thank you for the great video, and trip down Memory Lane. Please do more Space Hulk in the future. Like you imply - GW is really screwing themselves not giving more love to this amazing classic, and arguably their best game.

My son and I shared 2 copies of Space Hulk, probably 2nd and 3rd editions. The 2nd ed Termies are great. They don't have a lot of pose-ability but they have some, and in a confined space I don't want a lot of dynamic minis that get hung up on each other as I move them. Sometimes, we need _gaming pieces_, not _sculptures_. I agree with your assessment of SH. What you left out is that SH provides the atmosphere of suspense and apprehension that a Space Marine player should feel. I'd say no other GW game can boast this.
The box comes with two 5-man squads of Termies. Each squad has flamer, hammer-and-stormshield, and sergeant models. In addition, there's also a Librarian. The 'Stealers are simply numerous and a great model. The ship is swarming with 'Stealers. Every turn, more pour onto the map through various entry points. But the game sports a hidden movement mechanism where the Marines don't get to see how many foes are nearby - they only detect their presence using an auspex. They see when they have line of sight.
Since the 'Stealers' numbers are literally unlimited, SH is a race game. The Termies must accomplish the mission before they lose from attrition, and there will be attrition. Termies run, set up overwatch down side corridors, and lay down impassible walls of flame as they sprint to the goal. It's terrifying and claustrophobic.
Finally, the scenarios are varied and interesting. The maps aren't just randomly designed; every square matters, every door is a choice. How well the maps are balanced is an unseen and impressive part of the game.
Seriously, go to BGG and buy a used copy. #fanboi #sorrynotsorry

Now, I just kinda pour my hobby time and energy into other projects. But my girlfriend has been wanting to try painting some models, specifically tyranids anyway, and I have been wanting to play the game with her, so it may be a good opportunity to let her do the genestealers, and I'll do the Terminators. Maybe.

In the late 1990s I recreated an entire first edition set (inc. Space Hulk, Deathwing, and Genestealer box sets & the Compendium book), and have over the years added Terminators and Hybrids with the various load outs. I also in the early 2000s (using 6mm Epic scale figs) created a magnetized "Travel Space Hulk" (for the 1st ed basic rules only) set with the pieces and markers able to be stored in an Altoids mints tin, and missions played on a metal cookie sheet (with the maps printed on 8.5"x11" paper).

I had the first edition of both Space Hulk and Space Crusade. I think i still have a couple of the Terminators and Genestealers from that set but none if the tiles and doors etc.
The recent Gallowdark/Boarding Actions terrain sets could be put together to form a Space Hulk layout but you wouldn't have the atmosphere of the unpredictable maze of corridors from the original Space Hulk.
Still all the parts (Terminators, Genestealers, terrain) can be obtained to have a Space Hulk style set up. But i do hope they release a new version with the latest, resized Terminators.

Played First Edition Space Hulk, because of the 1993 PC game and I pestered my parents. Assembled poorly but loved the hell out of it. It was such a great package, although the first edition rules had a lot of vague and unclear issues like with how flamers worked.
Now I own fourth edition (I agree, let's called it 3.5), and it's treasured.
Although 10th Ed started as Tyranids vs Spess Mans, a nod to the Space Hulk pairing... Space Hulk is still something special.

Have a copy of the 2009 release sitting unpainted & unplayed. It’s a great game, I played it a bunch on a friends copy years ago and at the time the termies were better than anything GW released for 40k so I always had it on my “awesome stuff to paint” list and just never got around to it.
Even with the latest versions of the terminators, the ones in this box are still great. Might bring it back up to the top of that painting list. I’ve been looking for smaller projects and this fits that definition.
Also there are plenty of options for space hulk - loads of 3D printable corridors or mdf corridors with grids. And the image files for space hulk are easy to find if you have access to a good quality printer and card stock. Not going to be the same as the boxed game, but does the job.

One I use, the other is still in the shrink wrap and worth 7 times what I paid for it... although I'll be gifting it to my son when he is a bit older so he can fully paint up an entire Space Hulk box. We both love the game, but I have to say the balance is way off... when playing as the Terminators the game is basically ultra hard mode, and playing as the genestealers its super easy mode. As a Tyranid player, I would LOVE if genestealers were as deadly in 40k as they are in Space Hulk. Anyhoo, Space Hulk is my all time favourite board game.
