Does investing too much in damage reduction (gua triplble, fixa guard etc) yield diminishing returns as far as armor setup goes?

Yes and no. In regards to the two that you mentioned, Gua Tripble is part of the 3.0% Tripble series family. As long as you're getting that highest version of the augment (3.0%), the other stats can be as you see fit for your play style. So if you want the one that has DMG Reduction, or the one with more PP, or HP, etc, etc then that's entirely up to you. The main thing is making sure that you're getting the highest potency version of that augment, which you are, in the 3.0% Tripble variations.
I'd imagine that if you had like 3 Fixa Guard 5 units, and dmg resistance+ on every augment you could possibly put it on that makes actual sense, there would be noticeable diminishing returns of some sort. But realistically, as long as you're getting the proper augs/highest potency versions, If they have dmg resistance on a variation that you want, feel free to use it if that's what you believe is best for your play style.
Fixas on units are the biggest luxury of all. In that they have a lesser impact than say, the fixas on weapons will have. As such, aim for what you feel is best for you in that regard. In my personal case, I don't usually aim for Guards because of my playstyle, however if I did, I would likely max it at 2 Fixa 5 Guards. With the 3rd Unit being something else.
      I hope this helped!
