I was stationed in Panama for 2 years (86-88 A. Co. 1/508 Airborne at Ft. Kobbe) then when to Ft Bragg to the 82nd from 88-90 (C. Co. 1/504 Parachute Infantry Regiment). In 1990 after coming back from Operation Just Cause, my unit went to back to Panama for Jungle Expert School (at JOTC Fort Sherman, now Shelter Bay) about a month later. We were told the lighthouse was off limits. So a buddy and I got three sheets to the wind on our one day off and climbed just over half way, on the outside, of the lighthouse. I'm glad we had enough brain cells clicking to stop and head back down. Good times!
I know you’re on the Pacific side now. Hope things are going well. Look forward to following more adventures. Curious to see how the boat performs beating north.
Awesome Ep!! Watching your Ep of Panama canal right after the Delos, shows us two different experiences!! Last time, I watched the diving on your channel first and then on Delos!! Same scene, two different eyes!!... Love you Calicos!!
@@CalicoSkiesSailing Absolutely, Bill... I always loved two different views and experiences... I, in fact found you through Delos.. They were my first sailing channel.. You were the next.. Been following you guys for almost 3.5-4 years!! You two present almost the same experience in two different perspectives... I love that...
Delos just posted their Panama vlog just before you, so I got to follow two of my favorite channels this morning, as you work your way through the canal on your way to the Pacific! Safe travels and I look forward to your ongoing journeys.
Grace this episode was amazing! Really enjoyed having you explain so many things. The professionalism of the "Canal People" , the agents and the pilots, was excellent. What an experience! Thanks for taking me along!
Another entertaining and very enjoyable sailing adventure. Your info and filming of your passion to and throw the Panama Canal was perfect. I think between your video and that of SV Delos I think I know everything I need to know about the Panama Camal. LOL! Stay groovy and stay safe. On to Pacific excitement now.
Such an adventure and experience. Really interesting to see how it all works. I was surprised when you got the huge fenders and all that line. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks for sharing! ⛵️✌️😊
I watched the second part of your canal crossing live back in March, so nice to see the first part in this episode. Looking forward to seeing the edited version of your entrance into the Pacific next week!
Awsome Sauce Production 📷👀❤❗ Adventures aboard Calico Skies never disappoint. Were we dreaming or did we watch portions of you canal crossing live? Can't wait for the Pacific adventures to begin. Calm seas and fair winds to you. Loni & Al
Those canal locks look really old, reminded me of the Titanic, all those rivets in the steel. Looks like you had another epic adventure with good friends along for the ride. Must have been crowded on Calico Skies the night you spent on the lake, bet it was fun though? Can't wait for the next video.
I hadn’t thought of that but it really does. It was for sure. We were all pretty tired and yes it was a wee bit crowded ha fun yes. We saved up for the next night :)
I really enjoyed this! It's amazing to experience a passage through the Panama Canal, even if it is "virtual". I doubt very much that I will ever make the same journey. I hope you are enjoying the Pacific Ocean, now that you are there. Are you still Buddy Boating with Delos or off on your own?
So nice to some old familiar faces on yours and Delos boat. Great that they took time out of their lives to go down to Panama to assist. Love your channel and would like to say to the Delos followers come and subscribe to the Calico Skies channel. Lets give them some loving because they deserve it. Take care all.
You guys deserve more viewers. Tough not having any cute kids or babies or scuba divers or cute deck hands to provide a change and some color commentary, though buddying up with the tour leader Delos is very clever and practical. So I suggest you do what talk show hosts do to relieve just being talking to yourselves - interview more guests. Wherever you can talk to locals -even if just the harbor pilot or rope boy or cook or other locals because us landlubbers don't know any of them and find all the variety fun - even if in very broken English :)
Antho this is good stuff if want babies or pets there’s plenty of channels for you🥴do you really think they could carry on a conversation with a guy 40 feet above???Ive been through locks in Louisiana and it’s very nerve racking to say the least.your comment is so ignorant🤓Calico is great so sit back and learn some things.I suggest you be quite😉
I've always wondered what would happen if they opened up the canal and let the waters on both sides level out so we wouldn't need the canal? Does anyone have an answer? 🇺🇸
Lake Gatun is 85 feet above sea level, hence the lock system. To allow transit without locks it would mean that you would need to dig the channels another 85 feet deeper than they already are and the slopes and everything else at the cost of billions of dollars. When they were first trying to dig the panama canal this was what they were trying to accomplish but with landslides and other issues made this extremely difficult so they switched to a lock system to avoid the problems and the costs that would be involved in a sea level transit system.
Cool video but duuuuude, I almost puked looking at your coffee cups. All that residue can never be properly cleaned! Just a bit of vinegar and a wire scrubber will do the trick

haha crazy! Cool story! We enjoyed exploring the old jail at shelter bay
The music starting 17:00 thru the end is magical. Pure genius sound design there, Calico.
Thank you so much 😃
Those are huge locks. HUGE! It's such a feat of engineering and labour and death. I'll never see them in person. Thanks for the ride.
Happy to take you with us Dave!
One of your best videos. What a thrill you must have felt to be in the Pacific.
Thanks Greg! Sure was :)
Your videos keep getting more and more professional. Keep up the great work!

Great video and great to see Jeff again. Grace, the pesto and pasta looks delicios!!
It was cool that Jeff was able to make it down for the transit!
Historical location and transit. Well done by all. Now, on to new adventures. ⛵️🏝 Best wishes sent to all.

Yea those fenders were huge, glad we were able to rent them, idk how we store fenders of that size LOL
Fascinating. Welcome to the Pacific, however, you are hustling right up the coast.
Yep making lots of miles quickly, trying to get north for the hurricane season
@@CalicoSkiesSailing Where will you spend hurricane season?
It's amazing how much Bill's brother sounds like Bill and has the same mannerisms.

We are still together in Mexico now, actually tied up right next to each other at the marina LOL
congrats!
Nice work on prepping for the transit. Breaking down is bad enough, paying a fine would be really bad.
watched the live canal crossing

hmm think we will be in the Sea of Cortez for a bit, then likely towards the south pacific

I would love to own the canal, it's a real money maker with a mountain of rules and charges.
HA I bet! It must be a real money maker
It’s Ga TOON, rookie.
lol
I recommend the one handed method for tying the bowline under pressure. Takes like 2- 3 seconds.
Good tip!
