Spent 12 years trying to find this bird, but no way of getting to the places where they breed and boom. Saw one at Amwell but that was at other side of the lake, one at Fisher's Green was just a flap, not even 1 second of a sight. Spent at least 6 hours at Lakenheath Fen today, heard many poor booms as they are just rehearsing, warming up for the king of the booming season, but heard a few proper ones, and they are really powerful! Saw a few as well including one within 10-15 meters away from me and a sizeable crowd. The Great (Eurasian) Bittern is a very strange bird!

I loved this video! I just saw one on my patio in Bedford, Tx. Had no clue what type of bird - he/she kept very still for about 45 mins, may have been resting from migrating. What a treat, he visited me!

@Elitedevil I have watched them in real life, even saw one fight off a noticeably larger Grey Heron.

Because wading birds are usually pretty quiet. They aren’t songbirds. They try to hide and hunt in the reeds.
