  • Trying out different room mic setup in the studio, and liked this one with a Shure SM57 on the wall. I set it up about 10 feet away from the kit, facing the left wall and about 1" off the wall. Will definitely mess around more with this mic and different wall placements.

Good video, great subject. I love the process of experimenting with mike placement.
This is an old trick I used to do:
Using 1" foam insulation board, build an enclosure around your kit. Place a mic in the kick drum, and another on the right side of snare pointing upwards (straight up) without sticking up higher than the snare. Add compression to the snare mic and a noise gate to the kick-mic.
You'll get an explosively big drum sound rich with tones. I made my drums on a lot of my bands' recordings using a cheap 4 track sound amazing this way.

Thanks for the tip John! Will have to try some of what you've found. Thank you...

That is a classic trick! We call it a knee mic, usually using an omnidirectional mic like an Ev 635A… assuming you’re talking right of the snare from the drummer’s perspective?

    Beautiful kit mate

Love this. Short and to the point.
If you read this, you might try removing any carpet/padding from under the kit and pointing the mic at the floor.

    Great idea to mix in

This is akin to using a PZM mounted on the wall but the PZMs sound better because they were designed for it. But you could work with this if you had to. It's not horrible.

How often do you record through a mic and never EQ? Plus, I agree with others, it's the overall sound that matters at the end.

Random question but where did you get that drum kit? I Sold a DW collectors just like that a few years ago on reverb

Really! I hadn't seen one like this before. I ordered it custom, and it was supposed to be Black & Tan...but it came Silver & Tan. I think I've had this kit for about 7 years now.

WE WOULD UNDERSTAND IT BETTER IF IT WAS PLAYING A SIMPLER, CLEAN GROOVE, IT'S VERY NOISY AND CRAMBLE.

Sure! But I made this video 2 years ago, so it is what it is at this point.

Too much 400-500hz in that wall mic, sounds very boxy

Maybe it sounds boxy/ugly by itself but these reflections helps to glue close mics together.

It sounds terrible but in a song mix it may be heaven

I quite like that midrange boost.
