Season 2 is a big step up from season 1 but I still think season 1 is amazing. It’s kind of like a different nostalgic vibe compared to the rest of the show and there’s a lot of really great episodes like College, Boca, The Legend of, Isabella, etc.
Yeah I made a similar comment. Season 1 is brilliant, and better than season 6 in my opinion. Season 6 mostly had a bunch of characters we didn't really know like Butchie, Carlo, Coco, most New York guys, etc. and many of the best characters were already dead. I didn't find the actual mafia war conflict between New York and NJ that compelling. Still good though, but season 1 with Livia, Tony, and Junior squaring off was just **chef's kiss**
The second season intro is easily my favorite of all time. The emotion and camera work on display, all overlaying Frank Sinatra’s “It Was A Very Good Year”. Just top tier.
I'm doing the same with my girlfriend since she's never seen it. I appreciate it so much more now, picking up on things I missed when it first aired. Greatest show to ever air.
i tried the same but my girlfriend is really cant stand the violence. and the r4pe thing is also a big trigger for her. it hurts so much not to be able to share this masterpiece with my s/o.
You should do something in the style of Slick Rick if possible. I know it would be difficult, but I've made my demands and I expect to see this video by 2026 or else I'll be back. The deal will not be so fair a 2nd time around.
Another good girlfriend show would be Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Deadwood is great too. Now you have a few weeks of comfy binge watching to keep you out of the heat
Great character assessment dpm. Shes trapped in a loveless marriage with ungrateful kids and try as she might to do the right thing, her sense of a meaningless life just pours out from time to time.
Carmela is very condescending and I think she believes a persons worth is tied into power, wealth and prestige. Love it when she talks down to AJ’s super rich girlfriend about decor, not knowing the girls family has famous works of art and seasonal residences
Like Tony, she's *almost* a sympathetic character. She comes just close enough to redemption, without ever achieving it. Their humanity often shines through their deplorableness, but they are, in the end, deplorable people. The show never lets you forget that. It never makes them bona fide protagonists. This is why the Sopranos is so brilliant. It perfectly strikes that balance of presenting sympathetic villains that subsequent shows failed to do.
@@Spooky_515 Also her guilt for her willing complicity in the mob, which she attempts to redeem via various means (her devout Catholicism and her separation from Tony). It's an internal struggle she has throughout the series and is her redeeming trait -- she is clearly not a sociopath and has a strong desire to do good. She is an irreproachably good mother, good wife, and good friend, but she is a product of her environment -- arrogant, spoiled and Machiavellian -- and will not hesitate to weild mafia power with its implicit threat of violence. She is quite complex, and Edie Falco knocked it out of the park.
Members Only jackets are heavily associated with the 1980s. Richie wearing one was most likely just to illustrate how long he’d been in jail and how out of touch he was with how things had changed on the outside.
The first season definitely has a very different vibe and look to it, meaning the cinemaphotography. I think over the years I've read a few times that's because the pilot was actually written and filmed to be a possible feature film but it never made it that far, obviously. Then evolved into the show we all know and love. The pilot has that feature film look to it, especially the scene on the porch when Tony and Chrissy have the ''What are you gonna do, go Henry Hill on me now'' conversation.
When i got into the show, the first 4 or so episodes felt off to me. I couldn't stand all of the fisheye lens scenes, luckily they disappeared over a couple episodes.
pilots can be pretty different from the rest of the show in many series. it’s because usually, pilots are filmed long before the rest of the season. the pilot is used to “sell” the series and get a production company to order a full season of it. actors shoot way more pilots than you think, most of them just never get picked up. there are exceptions obviously, like House of the Dragon for instance, the Game of Thrones prequel. that one didn’t follow this pattern because the season was ordered long before they shot anything. so, the more you know!
Personal anecdote: For several years I started the year by watching all episodes, about two or three each evening. It eased the path back into work after the festive season and suspended or at least slowed down time for a while. I can recommend this therapy.
Man.. I remember I was in the hospital and when I woke up and was finally able to use a phone I watched your vids start to finish while I recovered in the bed. It definitely helped me chill the fk out lol. I appreciate your content man and all the work you put in. The sopranos community really blew up around then like never before and it’s a great thing. This thing of ours!
I finished watching the entire series back around the holidays 2022 and watching all these sopranos theory videos and stuff makes me want to rewatch the entire series just to see the subtle things that I can pick up.
One of the more chilling lines of the series was Livia when she says to Janice "That's another thing you threw away of mine." When talking about having a new name. The way the actress delivered the line was, madone, perfection.
I keep the Sopranos on a constant loop. When it ends, I start over. I don’t watch every day but when I do watch, I want to pick up where I left off. The juxtaposition of the last episode with the first is wild.
one thing about season 1 and 2 is that the colors pop off the screen so well, everything poke so bright and each shot is like visual candy, something that is lost over future seasons
I've rewatched this show at least like six times and its always given me something new. Its always been apart of my life from when I was a kid and my parents would have the soundtractk playing or i would watch with them. Every rewatch has either been "Oh this is something I never noticed" or "hey this kind of relates to my personal life". My favorite episode ironically is the first episode i ever watched, soprano home movies. I watched in 7th grade while i was on a trip with my parents in the same hotel room and i was bored because it wasn't enough action or exciment like their other shows they watched. But when I watched after I became an adult with knowledge of how shows and stories are written, it became my favorite episode. There is so much depth to each episode that this whole series is a peice of art. I hope you keep on making more videos because I've really enjoyed your content on it.
Good point. Before becoming a Sopranos fanatic, I had tepid interest after watching the first three episodes. I thought it was good, but it didn't blow my mind. Many years later, when I finally purchased the entire box set and began watching, I quickly became hooked after making it midway through the first season. I also agree that it really starts to take off after the first season and just gets stronger until about the very end. I've now watched it four times. Wonder when I'll do it again.
I'm also done with watch 4. I may split it with a breaking bad watch but sopranos set such a high standard especially when John and Phil came in and then with Heidi and Kennedy onward it's hard to rewatch anything else
Watched it for the first time recently and found your channel afterwards!!! What a show man! T is easily one of the greatest Villains I've ever seen, can't wait to watch BB now
Just found out 6/1/23, that HBOMax has added an enhanced Talking Sopranos podcast with actual clips from the show. So guess I gotta rewatch the rewatch pod now
What's your favorite Sopranos intro to someone/nick name? Me, I discreetly enjoy when Tony is like: "There he is... Blackjack Masserone." It isn't even said warmly like the others, this time it's cooler, calmer, and bit sinister.
I have so much nostalgia for the Sopranos and need to rewatch the series from start to finish again. It was the first mature audiences TV show that my parents allowed me to watch, and we all got hooked together. I was in 6th grade when it began and had just finished my freshman year of college when it ended. I was basically the same age as AJ and identified with that character almost to the letter.
The one thing I noticed while I rewatch is how few foot soldiers you see in the show. To me, it seems like the entire crew is only a dozen or so guys. I assume each captain would have at least 5 or 6 guys under them yet you never see them. To me, the new jersey mob would have hundreds of members but you never see a captain talking to a group of foot soldiers or giving orders to people who are not deeply in the show.
my rewatches helped solidify the Ralph Ciffaretto storyline as my favorite and Tony B storyline as overrated. and recognizing the Livia holograms for what they are 😂
I agree, I think Ralph is my favorite antagonist of the series. Just a total piece of shit who is just as damaged and human as anyone else, as we see when his son is traumatically injured. Him killing Tracee and Pie-O-My made him absolutely despicable in my eyes, but I also couldn't help but think that he was as fucked up as he was because he was probably abused, sexually and physically, as a child, and had to grow up in the mafia life. No one survives that
One thing i liked most about the show was the staying power of such short scenes. The first hit on Tony, Adrianna, Chris and the major accident and so many more. I still get random flashbacks of the hit scene from Isabella where Tony owns those two guys
My husband and I rewatch The Sopranos every year. We love it and consider it to be some of the best TV (along with Breaking Bad). It’s also a great pallet cleanser from Ted Lasso, Always Sunny and What We Do in the Shadows and others. Thanks for your awesome analysis of the show- it gave more depth to our conversations about the it. We are almost finished this year’s run of rewatching and it’s only June. I look forward to rewatching it during the new year as well as your upcoming videos. ❤
Watched this back in October 2021 to December 2021 when I was 17. I'm thinking of rewatching next year when I turn 20. Because I feel like I'll be more mature to understand the show a lot more and probably notice a lot more foreshadowing I missed out on.
Few things made me happier, as a _Sopranos_ fanatic in his 40s - who watched as the series first aired - than to hear that young people were discovering the show on their own, in particular, around the time of the pandemic, as you did! It definitely is prophetic, in terms of describing how we, as a people, got to this point as a nation and as a species these last few years. You should definitely rewatch soon... few pieces of cinema will ever be as rewarding to rewatch. The older you get, the more you'll get out of it.
@Jimmy1982*Playlists The reason I didn't watch this show earlier is because it's not that popular in my country as compared to Breaking Bad. But I had heard of it before because it heavily influenced GTA. Watching this is one of the best things I have done after the virus outbreak. You're lucky to have been born during a time in a way that you'll get to watch the show in your teens/twenties when it first aired. I'll definitely rewatch this show one every year and probably pass it down to my future children.
The true mark of a work of art is what you have just related - every time you revisit it you find something new. The Sopranos is IMO a masterpiece (which is one thing you can't say about the film...).
I’ve said this many times and I’ll said it again, nothing will ever come close to The Sopranos. It changed television forever and without it, we wouldn’t have Breaking Bad, Dexter, or Game of Thrones for that matter. It will forever be the greatest television series ever to air on a television. The fact that it’s still relevant in todays world, even with 16 years passed since the shows final episode shows how brilliant the show, the acting, script writing, and the directing really was. It’s ironic that my girlfriend had never seen the show before and we’re on the last episode, coincidentally with todays date, June 10th, being our last episode and the same date that the last episode premiered. 👏🏻 👌🏻
I love it when I rewatch or re-read something and catch someone that I missed. Now, am not talking about how so-and-so was actually wearing a maroon tie instead of a solid blue one. I'm talking about the subtle things...the line of dialog, the body movement, the hint of a smile...stuff like that could radical change your interpretation.
After learning more about the New Saints movie fiasco I'm starting to suspect that Terrence winter is the real genius behind the scenes more than David Chase, since he wasn't involved in the movie
Hey bud, I just finished another rewatch as well. No idea how many since I watched the show when broadcast. This time I started April 1, 2023 and just finished a day ago. I enjoyed the early seasons the most, most likely because I've already given SEA 6 several rewatches already.( Especially "Made In America." ) A nice side effect from The Sopranos is making good friends like yourself Kino. Great job per usual. You Steer The Ship The Best Way You Know. Sometimes It’s Smooth. Sometimes You Hit The Rocks.
I've always thought that season 1 was great in its own way, but a bit of a slow burn compared to the rest of the series. A lot of TV shows seem to fall off a bit towards the end of their run, but The Sopranos really did stay interesting throughout the entire series. Especially towards the end as Tony's whole world starts to unravel. An undeniably fantastic show!
Hey Kino!! Ever since your Sopranos blogs; I have seen the show 3 more times. It goes to show that you can make a RUclips series on the Sopranos and still find enjoyment from the show as well as new things to find. The greatest story ever told. HOW MUCH MORE BETRAYAL CAN I TAKE?!
I've watched this show five times, and that's not including random episode rewatches. It's a very rewatchable show. The characterization is so good. Great characterization really helps a show age well and makes rewatches more fulfilling. I've settled into season 6b being my favorite. Though I probably enjoy the first two seasons the most. And yes, season 1 feels very different than the rest of the show after you see it all and go back. The series had to find its footing and its own vibe. But I still feel season 1 is one of the stronger seasons primarily due to it being the only season where the Tony-Livia dynamic is at the center. I also feel the overall arc was really good. So, even though the flaws of that season is more obvious than the rest, it still feels like a great introduction.
Hey man, Love ur reviews dude. i just subscribed to u over a week ago when i decided to re-watch the Sopranos again. For me its like visit old friends in a strange way. Anyway As Someone that is from the neighborhood and still remembers what it was like watching this show with my family every sunday when it was new. i can help u with a couple things. My Dad had a members only jacket he worn everyday no change till it started to fall apart lol, they was very common jackets to see at one point over here. In the show it was used to symbolize these guys being old school and still stuck in the past. I get your not from the America East coast, so i'll try to help u understand. The members only jackets was always low profile basic plain colored and was only trending when those guys was kids. Also Notice Eugene worn one in his last Ep too. It with be comparable to, i guess old Mexican gangsters still walking around with ponchos, or cowboys wearing spurs on there boots. these guys are still mentally living in the past. Rose say it to Camela once even. And only Tony and Christophor realized it early on in ep1 with Tony talking to Dr Melfie. The other guys didn't get it was outdated till the Episode with Tony selling building to Jamba Juice. Ok thats enough, wasn't expecting to type that much. This show still does it for me lol.
A suggestion. How about an analysis on Johnny Boy's impact on Tony's relationship with his own children. The show mostly dives into the scars that Livia left on him, but Johnny definitely left some scars that affect him just as much.
It's good to know there's people just like me that re watch these classic shows..Sopranos, The Wire, Oz, etc..and for different reasons..as I can say the late 90s was the time for HBO series that was hot.
I've re-watched the Sopranos annually pretty much since it first aired. First on VHS tapes, then DVD, now streaming. It's part of my routine. If you weren't around for when the show was new, I guess I can understand why season one seems lackluster in comparison to the rest of the series. But if you are an OG fan who watched it when it was brand new on HBO, the first season will always be your favorite simply because it just hits that nostalgia perfectly and brings back the feeling of seeing something on television that nobody had ever seen before. And it just rocked our world like you cannot even believe. Unfortunately nobody today can relate to the absolute world-changing impact that show had on us. But it's for that reason that season one carries a special place in our hearts and remains totally re-watchable. Objectively, the writers were still trying to find their footing of course. David Chase borrowed a lot from Goodfellas and other mob movies in terms of stylistic decisions, music, etc. for the first few episodes. But the show found its voice by the middle of the season and I think they started building the world brilliantly from there.
i watched the entire show early this year.... every episode. Don't know why people have such an issue with the end. Its very obvious to me. The fact is... whether he gets killed or not... his life is a life that he will always live in fear. We the audience are just as uncertain as Tony is.... who wants to live like that? Thats the life he has created for himself.
Thanks bro, for all your time and content. I have said this before, but your vids are the best Soprano stuff on the net. Even better than Talking Sopranos. They should have got you to present it.
It’s tough after seeing it so many times to not be constantly noticing the ADR/Looping and editing/background actors…it’s funny and fun to catch all the previously unnoticed seams and details
Gandolfini died when I had only six episodes left, and despite being hooked to the max, for weeks I couldn't finish the show. I was so invested in this criminal's life, this lovable cnt that made me laugh and made me hate him. And now, the man who brought Tony to life was gone, before he could finish telling me his story. Thanks for the art, James.
Doing it again too, for the 3rd or 4th time now. I can't even remember and that's a beautiful thing. It never gets old. I do the same with the Band of Brothers series every now and again. HBO truly constructs some of the best series ever, especially during the early 2000's
That one random Star Wars cut where it fades from right to left was so jarring, they did once in the entirety of the show. The slow-motion shit also was weird.
I think the things you say about Pine Barrens being an introduction to people unfamiliar with the genre ring so true in my head I could not stop thinking about it so I came back to write this comment
Right when you mentioned season 1, I already knew you were gonna say that it was a chore to get through because I had the same experience when I first watched it a few years ago. The 2nd season is a breath of fresh air in comparison and not as a cliched mobster story as the series progresses. I've also been rewatching the series and doing the same thing as you are, i.e. skipping 'that' scene in Employee of the month, skipped Pine Barrens (you're not alone!), and kinda jumping around to study specific characters. It works really well doing it in this way instead of watching chronologically and I think shows the strength and Chase's clever writing in creating vignettes than a specifically structured plot.
goosebumps when Kino turned around and said "Whats up Sopranos fans, Kino here."

It definitely is prophetic, in terms of describing how we, as a people, got to this point as a nation and as a species these last few years.
You should definitely rewatch soon... few pieces of cinema will ever be as rewarding to rewatch. The older you get, the more you'll get out of it.
You probably haven't matured much in that short a time span.
@@Jimmy1982Playlists cracking comment here 👍
@@HOTD108_ We'll see.
D Girl, Tracee, Matthew Bavalaqua, everything Junior ever said. The show started its slow decline when Furio fell for Carmella.
So interesting about skipping "that scene" from Employee Of The Month. I also do that when I rewatch.
I have to skip it also. It's too damn real man.
I love (seriously, love) your appreciation and love for this fantastic series.
Great time seeing my edit here - good video as usual!
Your videos are always entertaining and informative. As a mega fan, I appreciate what you do.
I love it when I rewatch or re-read something and catch someone that I missed. Now, am not talking about how so-and-so was actually wearing a maroon tie instead of a solid blue one. I'm talking about the subtle things...the line of dialog, the body movement, the hint of a smile...stuff like that could radical change your interpretation.
we love you pure kino keep up the kino i wouldnt mind another deep dive on something like barry , sons of anarchy or true detective s1
After learning more about the New Saints movie fiasco I'm starting to suspect that Terrence winter is the real genius behind the scenes more than David Chase, since he wasn't involved in the movie
I mean he did make boardwalk empire
Yes. Chase didn't even watching th fucking series. He hates the Sopranos. He also hated Jim. Fukc David Chase.
@@jamorant8849 you're right, I forgot about that, proving my point even more.
BE is on my top 3 next to sopranos and the wire
I actually liked Many Saints. Only a Sopranos fan can fully appreciate it, though. It doesn't work as a stand-alone.
The movie felt very corporate.
Sometimes You Hit The Rocks.
best content covering sopranos by far keep of the great work
I love the show. My number one series. Watch multiple times, never get bored. I remember a ton favorite lines in the show 😂
In Soprano Home Movies, when Bobby B picks up his daughter and "This Magic Moment" hits, it's a Chef's Kiss of an effortless & flawless Closing Scene.
Pine barrens is probably my favorite episode of the whole series
Great to see you are re-watching the show. Your work is fantastic.
Your videos are what made me want to buy my DVD box set of the series a few months back.
Kino has the makings of a varsity youtuber.
Love the photo of Tony with Lain on your second monitor
I like to listen to The Sopranos when I'm at work.
Agree with you on season 1. Also nice intro reference to the guy subbing as Christopher “Here” 😉
i watched the entire show early this year.... every episode. Don't know why people have such an issue with the end. Its very obvious to me. The fact is... whether he gets killed or not... his life is a life that he will always live in fear. We the audience are just as uncertain as Tony is.... who wants to live like that? Thats the life he has created for himself.
"Just when I got out, I come back in" - God Dad 3
that ad placement at 5:58 is insane
Bro when you were making videos everyday covering each episode, i was pumped all day waiting for your upload, keep the good work
Last shot of tony in dinner always brings me watery eyes every single time
He was an interior decorator. 😂
his house looked like shit
Charles Schwab over here
Thanks bro, for all your time and content. I have said this before, but your vids are the best Soprano stuff on the net. Even better than Talking Sopranos. They should have got you to present it.
Currently rewatching. Love this show
How come no one ever point out the réquiem of a dream alignment in Tony's dreams on the Jersey pier?
It’s tough after seeing it so many times to not be constantly noticing the ADR/Looping and editing/background actors…it’s funny and fun to catch all the previously unnoticed seams and details
Gandolfini died when I had only six episodes left, and despite being hooked to the max, for weeks I couldn't finish the show. I was so invested in this criminal's life, this lovable cnt that made me laugh and made me hate him. And now, the man who brought Tony to life was gone, before he could finish telling me his story.
Thanks for the art, James.
Season 1 is The Best Season, they all are great, but 1 was the Start, Jackie Aprile Vin Matcazian Mikey Palmice, Brendon Faloneie
it's the jaaaaacket.
Good video kino
Finished this show a couple months ago, no show comes close to this masterpiece 🐐
I only found your channel recently, so please.....Don't give up your Sopranos videos!!
Just when Kino thought he was out, The Sopranos pulled him back in
OMG... watching again in 2024. When I tell you this hits differently, now😅 I can't take it anymore. Absolutely hilarious
The Intervention scene will always be my number 1 favorite Sopranos scene ever. It's fuckin hilarious. Classic.
Yeah, only on a recent rewatch did I notice the battle of Geonosis behind Vito when he's talking to Finn
Ive watched through at least a dozen times. I put that show on like others do podcasts or music.
Nice, appreciate your giving us your feelings about it having reviewed it again, keep it coming please 🙏
I only finished my latest rewatch in February and already I want to watch it it again.
Doing it again too, for the 3rd or 4th time now. I can't even remember and that's a beautiful thing. It never gets old. I do the same with the Band of Brothers series every now and again. HBO truly constructs some of the best series ever, especially during the early 2000's
I watched this show through sooo many times. I haven't watched "that scene" in Employee of the Month in many many years though.
That Star Wars wipe was hilarious 😭😭
Everytime you watch it, you get something new. Its so deep.
congrats on 60k🥳
That one random Star Wars cut where it fades from right to left was so jarring, they did once in the entirety of the show. The slow-motion shit also was weird.
I usually rewatch the whole series every year. I can quote it word for word
I think the things you say about Pine Barrens being an introduction to people unfamiliar with the genre ring so true in my head I could not stop thinking about it so I came back to write this comment
I rewatch the Sopranos once a year. Pure Kino doesn't have the makings of a varsity athlete.
No meal is complete without a kino soprano deconstruction.
Season 1 and 4 are my go to rewatches.
