I have this piece on CD played by a viola instead of clarinet: the transcription was made by Brahms himself. It is beautiful with either instrument.

@@Bach1685I never inferred you hated the clarinet. I'm a clarinettist myself and have played this work so I'm entitled to disagree with you. It was written for Richard Mühlfeld the principal clarinet of the Meiningen Court Orchestra of whom Brahms was inspired by. He only arranged it for viola so it could be more widely played.
